Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 10:15 AM

Why does The Rock get credit for anything?

Seriously. What did he do that was so great?

Leach off the success of Stone Cold Steve Austin? Check.
Use the same promo for his whole career but pretend it's different by adding a new catchphrase every couple months? Check.
Cut calf holes in his boots? Check.
Leave to film a movie every time his character started getting stale? Check.
Pretend to love the business that made him, then leave it high and dry to benefit his own career? Check.

They say the attitude era died when Rocky left the company. That's true. Because Rocky killed it.

Discussion begins at post #2 (reply #1)

#BROKEN Hasney 03-14-2011 10:25 AM

Just right place right time really. It was all Vince.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 10:29 AM

If all it takes to be "great" in wrestling is a book of catchphrases and wiggling your eyebrow from time to time, I'm pretty sure I could be a wrestler.

Waylander 03-14-2011 10:31 AM

Because he's the freakin' Rock.

CSL 03-14-2011 10:34 AM

Don't forget that eyebrow thing. He stole that from Iron Mike Sharp and modified it a bit as Sharp was actually known to lift both brows. At the same freakin' time.

El Fangel 03-14-2011 10:34 AM

Shut up, jabroni.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 10:39 AM

The Rock got over by burying everyone and everything in his promos. It was the only way he knew how to get a reaction from the crowd. He made fun of people and buried their gimmicks. And of course the smart marks ate it up because he was being "edgy." He was a selfish prick and terrible for the business. End of story.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 10:41 AM

Remember when Mick Foley made the Rock look like a god at the Royal Rumble? The Rock never thanked him for that and never checked to see if Foley was ok after the match.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 10:42 AM

Let's see the Rock get anywhere in life without having a daddy in the business.

Shadrick 03-14-2011 10:45 AM

But Supreme, I think the Ro-Ohhhh I see what you're doing here.

CSL 03-14-2011 10:51 AM

When he called Shane or Stephanie a 'silver-spooned mother fucker' live on RAW. Going into business for himself, looking out for himself at the expense of his own boss's family.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 10:53 AM

Remember when he made fun of Big Show's hair? Now look at him. Bald as a baby's bottom. Nice one, Dwayne.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 12:58 PM

I'm sure plenty of people are reading this thread and thinking "Oh, parody thread, no biggie," but I am 100% serious.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 01:01 PM

just because the Rock road on Austin's coattails through the Attitude Era he gets a free pass

fuck that noise

Lara Emily 03-14-2011 01:06 PM

Austin/Rock/Foley/McMahon made the attitude era.

Throw in a little DX there too but not as much as the other 4

Jordan 03-14-2011 01:10 PM

Everyone road on Austin's coattails.

Undertaker

Lara Emily 03-14-2011 01:13 PM

Secondary contribution like DX

If you ask me Foley's importance is huge

He was Austin's first foe, He was Rock's fist foe and then towards the end of the era he was HHH first foe and he put them all over huge.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 01:32 PM

Foley was a fucking king. I love that man. Way more important than The Rock, who was a nobody.

Lara Emily 03-14-2011 01:33 PM

The Rock is the most successful wrestle ever

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 01:35 PM

Which is sad, because he's not very good.

Lara Emily 03-14-2011 01:36 PM

The millions

and

Millions

Of Rock's Fans would disagree

Sorry couldn't resist

ron the dial 03-14-2011 01:37 PM

neither could the rock

the millions

and

millions

of times he used that catchphrase.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 01:42 PM

You give Scott Taylor a book of catchphrases during the attitude era and he's a 6 time WWF Champion within 3 weeks.

Lara Emily 03-14-2011 01:42 PM

Oh yeah! The Rock is no Raven or Piper on the mic

The bottom line is brother everyone used catchphrases and I'm mean eeeeeeeeeeeveryone dig it?

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 01:42 PM

Jericho gets a pass because he can actually wrestle and cares about the business.

Rock was a no talent ass clown who cared only about himself.

Don't be ridiculous. Supreme is a moderator and a respected member of the community. His viewpoints are as respected here as they are throughout the world and as such, my posts are also legitimate.

CSL 03-14-2011 02:34 PM

See that, I made a parody post parodying the parody thread inside the parody thread.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 02:37 PM

The Rock is pretty overrated, parody thread or not.

MoFo 03-14-2011 02:40 PM

WWE is overrated

Vince stole all them ideas from Japan

CSL 03-14-2011 02:40 PM

He is kind of nauseating on Twitter/Facebook

TheRock Dwayne Johnson
Team Bring It - with faith, heart and desire to dominate we can move mountains.. I'm gettin after it..let's go...

Just that kind of stuff over and over again.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-14-2011 02:42 PM

I do like the Rock though. My beef is more with the people who sing his praises at any given moment and then bitch about how Cena sucks. Cena and the Rock are pretty much the same wrestler, just getting their pushes at different peaks of the wrestling industry.

Jeritron 03-14-2011 02:46 PM

I find it hilarious how people talk about Cena's bad jokes and poop humor, and then praise "monkey piss" and "shut up juice" like high art.

I missed the part where "yabba dabba bitch" was a "pwning" and Cena's jokes are all poopy

I think the Rock did a little more jobbing but, essentially, you are correct.

Swiss Ultimate 03-15-2011 06:20 AM

Good point actually. Aside from influencing others on the mic and how he moved in the ring he didn't revolutionize the business.

To be fair, the main reason people will blow the rock and boo cena is that the Rock says things like "ass."

"monkey piss?" YAY THE PG ERA IS OVER!!!!!!!!!

That sort of spastic shit.

I dunno if you're serious about this one either but if you are that's one of the most retarded things I've ever heard when doing wrestling comparisons, the statement itself is contradictory.

If people are bitching about Cena and praising The Rock they are clearly not the same wrestler. Attitude era or not.

I also think people kind of underestimate other factors. John Cena's head looks like a brick and Rock's looks like a milk dud.

plus jean shorts are really dumb

But jokes about poop and gay jokes are a huge similarity.

Rock Bottom 03-17-2011 09:10 AM

Seriously though there are a lot more factors than that to be fair to Cena even though I still think he's garbage he'd get some markish heel heat from me. I do enjoy seeing him look like he's getting killed like a piece of trash the way Miz did Monday.

Rock was around and feuding with guys like HHH when he was a mega face and HHH was super heel. Everyone was tired of HHH, including a lot of internet fans and he used it well. Mega face vs. mega heel is pretty good stuff. Nowadays I don't even know who a mega heel is on the roster. CM Punk comes to mind but I think CM is on another level entirely and Cena isn't the guy that can work with CM enough to get onto that 'memorable feud' level.

For those of you who have a hard time understanding my directionless babbling I guess what I'm trying to say is that it does depend a lot on the rest of the roster. But John Cena being the same wrestler, no.

Yeah, Hasney, a lot of that shit is similar. But there are a ton of other guys to throw into the mix when it comes to crap like that. HHH and Kane come to mind, lol. Ultimately it's a balance of what you do in the ring, on the mic, etc. Neither Rock NORNORNORNRORNRRONRRORNRORNRNRRRRNRORRRor Cena are exactly super wrestlers so it comes down to their charisma, and I don't really see how it's close. I'm pretty sure Rock would end up burying Cena if this crap continued.

As much as I like Rock and hate Cena I really don't see how this kind of feud would help either of them so I'm just kind of hoping it helps Miz. I think it's a stupid idea unless Miz retains and gets mega rubbed.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-17-2011 12:39 PM

They're the same person. Sorry buddy.

Checklist:
Charisma? Check.
Beloved heel? Check.
Formulaic promos with the same catchphrases over and over? Check.
Collection of retarded t-shirts? Check.
Formulaic movesets? Check.
Stupid hand motion/ground move? Check.
Weak looking finisher? Check.
Shittily applied submission hold? Check.
Star of terrible movies? Check.

I mean I get that you love the Rock and judging by your argument you're not a very intelligent person (Jean shorts are really dumb, are you kidding me), but be reasonable.

Yeah but Rock was the first person to do it, a bit like boy bands are just much of a muchness now, whereas the orginal boy band (The Beatles) are treated in the highest regard.

Cena is Mega Blox to Rock's Lego.

RVDmark 03-17-2011 01:17 PM

Also "Why does The Rock get credit for anything?",

Highest rated segment EVER on Raw (w/ Mick Foley), he drew the crowds in, simple.

Innovator 03-17-2011 01:33 PM

I heard Dennis Stamp was supposed to be the character of the Rock, but he wasn't booked.

You forgot 'Is widely considered the best ever on the mic?'

I'd also like to hear Cena try to get the crowd to recite anything he says. Austin could do it. Rock could do it. They'd have to do a hell of an audio job to drown out the booing if Cena tried to get the crowd involved in many of his promos.

Fortunately I don't have to be an 'intelligent person' to be correct. You're comparing Rock to Cena.

Correction, you said they were the same wrestler.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-17-2011 06:10 PM

That's a very recent picture of Rock training/doing something clearly quite physically exerting in some variety of ring and he doesn't appear to have any gloves on. Just for a bit of speculations sake.

The Naitch 03-18-2011 05:31 PM

hmmm, are those white ropes? He could be in a WWE ring or at a training facility, since they use white ropes for RAW now. I DUNNO

I wouldn't be surprised if Rock came back to wrestle. In the summer of 2002, I thought Shawn Michales was coming back for a one time deal, but fast forward...he's been wrestling full time until 2010.

I can see Rock doing one match atleast. He came back from Hollywood in 2003 and wrestled on RAW and PPVs for 3 months.

Nightwing 03-18-2011 05:42 PM

He showed up during a taping of Tough Enough.

Shadrick 03-19-2011 05:01 PM

Lol @ this thread. Rock and Cena are not the same. Similar, maybe. But not the same thing. Different personalities, different levels of charisma, booked differently. That's pretty obvious. But okay.

Even if The Rock and Cena are the same (and I'm not saying they are), The Rock came first. So The Rock is like the original "Nightmare on Elm Street." A classic. Loved by millions (and millions). Perfect? No. But still loved. Cena, however, is the "Nightmare on Elm Street" remake from last year. Nothing but a rip off trying to capitalize on the success of the original by attempting to do a modernized version of the same thing. Both versions of "Nightmare on Elm Street" are as much "the same" as Rock and Cena. That doesn't stop the majority of audiences and critics from loving one and hating the other. It doesn't matter how many similarities they have. All that matters is which one people were exposed to first. So loving The Rock and hating Cena isn't hypocrisy, it's natural.

St. Jimmy 03-19-2011 10:42 PM
