What other things do wrestling fans enjoy?

Been meaning to ask this for a while.

It struck me whilst reading one of the Raw threads a few months back when the rapper Pitbull made an appearance. A lot of people were like "Who is this guy?". Seems like a trend too. A lot of people didn't know who Snooki was either. And there are others.

Do wrestling fans avoid the mainstream media? Are we a bunch of geeks? Or a bunch of hipsters who look down on mainstream TV shows/bands/etc?

So, what other things are you guys into? What hobbies do you have?

#BROKEN Hasney 07-30-2011 04:02 AM

Self-asphyxiated masturbation.

Cool King 07-30-2011 05:10 AM

I knew who Pitbull and Snooki were, the only guys I don't know who appear on WWE programming are mostly always "Exclusive" North American celebrities. (e.g. Guys on shows that aren't aired outside North America, or comedians who are only ever on Saturday Night Live)

But other than Wrestling, I enjoy music, video games, drawing, hanging out with friends, watching TV, Football, I also like to watch the news to keep up with current events, I also somewhat have an interest in politics.

Those who said they didn't know who Snooki and Pitbull were are lying in an attempt to sound cool.

TheAdamEvansFan 07-30-2011 10:51 AM

The typical wrestling fan enjoys: Slavery, Porn, Nascar, Football, War, Family Orgys, and South Park/Simpsons.

whiteyford 07-30-2011 10:52 AM

I don't like Nascar.

Outside of my career, I have no pop culture interests other than wrestling and some great TV shows like The Office, South Park, and good HBO shows. But even so my interest in TV is much less than it used to be.

I know snooki is a slut from the Jersey Shore, although I've never seen the show. I have no idea who Pitbull is at all, I must have missed the wrasling show he was on too because I don't remember him being on Raw.

Rammsteinmad 07-30-2011 01:05 PM

Music, Comics, Guitar, Fitness, MMA, drinking and chilling out etc.

Xero 07-30-2011 01:11 PM

Honestly had no clue who Pitbull was. At all. Absolutely never heard of him before that appearance, or since.

Can't believe no one's heard of Snooki, though.

Lock Jaw 07-30-2011 01:55 PM

Still have no idea who Pitbull is. Don't even remember his appearance or what he looks like, so if ever I did get some slight idea of who he is, it is now gone.

XL 07-30-2011 02:05 PM

C'mon guys, I'm looking for specifics here.

What types of shows do you watch? What type of music do you listen to? Is it mainstream? Or are we as a group into a scene like "metal"?

Do you guys "follow fashion"? Are you concerned with appearance? Seems a few here "train", is that for health reasons or is it something that came about due to seeing all these muscular guys that wrestle?

Essentially I'm trying to find out if there is such thing as a "typical wrestling fan"? Or how much of a crossover there is between "mainstream" and the IWC.

XL 07-30-2011 02:06 PM

Also, I'd very much like to see a photo of each of you so I can say "That guy does not look like someone that's into metal/snowboarding/coking/tattoos/etc" or otherwise.

Favourite show is The Soprano's. I watch a ton of sports so don't really have a current show that I watch regularly, although I love shows like Intervention and Storage Wars. I run, play baseball and hockey although I do love Jersey Shore. I'm very concerned with my appearance, mainly due to my job which involves looking professional. Favourite music is dance music, which is WAY more mainstream than it used to be, but I do listen to a lot of top 40 music. I am on this site a lot, but I generally will watch either Raw or Smackdown, rarely both in a week and sometimes neither, but I keep up on the shows through reports just so I know what's going on, usually because any Jays, Maple Leafs, Patriots or Jazz game trumps wrestling for me.

Kal-El 07-30-2011 02:36 PM

Lol at that awesome limo!

Wishbone 07-30-2011 03:08 PM

I knew exactly who pitbull was thow I can't stand most of his music. As for other interests well True Blood, South Park, Simpsons, and other shows come to mind. Also love a good western. In the music department honestly anything with an awesome beat from light rock to rap to country and all the way to 'some' metal. Also enjoy hunting and fishing. And ofcorse Videogames are a must.

Lock Jaw 07-30-2011 03:31 PM

I don't play videogames or listen to much music.

Rammsteinmad 07-30-2011 04:19 PM

Music: Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock, Power Metal, Metal in general, Pop, Jazz, Rap, Classical, Funk, Blues, Musicals... everything really. But Prog is my favourite.

Don't watch much TV these days, but outside of wrestling I love Scrubs, The IT Crowd, Home Improvement, Mr Bean, Monk, The Day Today and Ask-a-Ninja. Also MMA if that counts.

Favourite movies include: The Phantom of the Opera, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Outlaw, Dawn of the Dead 2004, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (and all Kevin Smith's other View Askewiverse movies), Terminator 2, and all comic book movies... except Catwoman.

I love comics, mostly Marvel and DC, but I usually read anything I can get hold of. My favourites include Spider-Man, Wolverine/X-Men, The Punisher, Daredevil, The Avengers, Spawn and Batman.

I own nine guitars. Four of them are Ibanez (my favourite). I like going to the gym, and now-and-then I like to indulge in alcohol and weed. However, I'm not one of those people who feel the need to party every weekend, kinda gets boring after a while.

Also sex, masturbation and rape. :shifty:

Essentially I'm trying to find out if there is such thing as a "typical wrestling fan"? Or how much of a crossover there is between "mainstream" and the IWC.

The shows I watch are wrestling(of course), Breaking Bad, Burn Notice, Rescue Me, Supernatural, Legend Quest, Ancient Aliens and Psych. There are other shows I watch, mainly things relating to the paranormal and myths/legends. The books I read are also related to those type of interests.

The music I like is mostly pop and country. My favorites now are Maroon 5, Michael Buble, Nickelback and The Goo Goo Dolls.

As far as fashion, can't say I've ever been a follower of what's in style or popular. I do weight train, but mainly to stay healthy and stay strong. Although I'd be lying if I said watching wrestling didn't have some influence on that.

I don't know if you could classify me as a mainstream or typical fan, but I've never cared much about what others think. I do the things I do b/c they are fun and I enjoy it...

To more accurately answer your questions...

I am a married 30 year old father of two boys.
I have an awesome career in the communications field.
I am into metal.
I watch Dexter, Family guy, Top Shot (and just about anything else on the History Channel).
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope is by far my favorite movie.
I am not that concerned with fashion. However I do try to not look like an idiot, but mainly wear nothing but cargo shorts and T-shirts on my days off.
I am hygienic.
I hunt.
I fish.
I am into cars.
I am into video games.
I have watched wrasslin' since I was a child. My fondest memories are sitting on my granddad's knee watching "Saturday Night Main Event"

Gore Vidal, fine cognac and hand-rolled cuban cigars. As, I presume, most wrestling fans enjoy.

Asmo 07-30-2011 10:55 PM

Music: Largely metal, ambient electronica, hindustani classical and the occasional pop; Also play bass in a hardcore punk band; I watch quite a lot of concert vids & DVDs when i get the chance to

TV Shows: I work at a business news channel, so i don't really end up watching a lot of regular TV Programming. What i do watch is generally what i download - so apart from wrestling, its all-time-greats like the IT Crowd, Street Hawk, Bodyline, Simpsons, That 70s Show; Don't enjoy trashy reality TV, and love shows where food plays an important part (so anything from Anthony Bourdain & Gordon Ramsay to Nigella Lawson & even Masterchef)

Fashion: At work, i stick to jeans and shirts / polo t-shirts. When i'm not at work, i'm generally in band/graphic tees & heavy shorts.

I don't train/gym. At all. But then again, with the running around i do daily thanks to the commute and at work, i'm not overweight. Just not toned.

Recently got into Breaking Bad. The gf had been wanting to watch it, so I got the first two seasons on DVD for her and we are almost done with that. Also, gotta catch up on Dexter, and the gf likes Weeds, so I watch that, even though I'm not a fan of it.

Music...well, I don't know how to describe my taste. I've gotten into bands like From First to Last, Chiodos, D.R.U.G.S, The Used, and others over the past year or so. Also enjoy the occassional official film score, or rap, depending on my mood.

Don't really follow fashion. I like wearing button ups with and matching a hat to the solid colored t shirt I wear under the button up. I always go out of my way to look atleast presentable. Even when I'm hitting up 7-11, I match my t shirt, basketball shorts and hats accordingly. Always shaven, always with a clean haircut. Always with clean shoes. I even match when I go to the gym.

I'm a huge Nike whore. I only own Nike shoes, sans a pair of shoes the gf got me for Christmas.

Baseball is my truest passion. That's the one thing in life that I have maintained my fandom for.

I like weight lifting when I get around to doing it consistently. I originally got into it because I wanted to look like a pro wrestler. When I started playing baseball in HS, I noticed working out greatly accentuated my skill set, so I stuck with it for years. I love weight lifting and wish I was more dedicated.

How'd I do, XL?

In addition to wrestling, I also love watching sports. Football is primary, college and NFL, pro hockey, and college basketball are my other two faves.

I think because I work in the music/record industry, a lot of my other interests revolve around work, the music/entertainment/media or technology industries.

In terms of music, I really have quite a diverse taste, country, rock, pop, metal, punk, etc, pretty much anything other than techno, club music or rap, but still on a case by case basis I guess.

I also hit the gym pretty heavy, at least 3-5 times a week. Also, I love to fish and go out on the boat during the summer. I love to cook and barbeque too. Video games and drinking are also high up on the list. I do like to follow politics too, as infuriating/frustrating as it is sometimes.

Mostly to Randy Orton, MIRITE?

To be fair withthis whole question thing, even i was surprised when people asked who Snooki was. Even I know who she is, and I don't really follow anything particularly mainstream. I don't avoid it, but I don't watch Jackoff Shore and I don't care about celebrity news.

What does not surprise me, honestly, is that people didn't know who Pitbull was. I had to Google him to find out I knew songs he did. I'm bettng that a ot of people who didn't know him by name or appearance would be like "oh, yeah, I heard that."

Because I live in the Whitest State in the US, and we STILL get rap up here.

Seriously, Montana calls us crackers.

This one doesn't surprise me, as I already said, because he really doesn't strike me as a guy with a lot of name recognition. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't go out of my way to follow pop culture, but judging from everything I saw online, he's hardly the brand name some of these other fuckers are.

I think WWE's more out of touch with pop culture than the fans are, generally speaking.

Though my tastes are hardly ones to judge the collective by.

There's a "wrestling fan" stereotype - a misconception no doubt, but it is there. You know the one, the over-weight, basement-dwelling, loser that lives with his parents and spends all day on the net. It's often used as a "go-to" insult on these boards.

On top of that I've never considered myself a "typical wrestling fan", but then I wondered...what is the typical fan?

I guess if I had to take a shot in the dark at an average, most here would be into "rock" music, definately something that isn't "mainstream" or "commercial". And that would play into what clothes they would wear (band shirts). But I was just intrigued by what makes a wrestling fan tick.

Then you have the Snooki/Pitbull/mainstream celebs issue. There were a lot of guys that hosted Raw that I didn't know becuase they were US sports players but for the most part I knew most of them. That isn't because I follow the mainstream media particularly but because I am aware of it. It's there and I wondered how people don't just take on board who these (minor) celebs are.

Rammsteinmad 07-31-2011 01:37 PM

I was just coming to this.

I'm a 27 year old from England living near Birmingham (that's not in London ;)).

Music: I used to be into rap/hip hop quite heavily when I was at Uni but now I don't have the time to "seek" out stuff that isn't commercial. So, my music "taste" is made up of stuff I hear on the radio. I still like rap, RnB, rock amd I guess pop. All commecial/mainstream though. On top of that I do listen to older bands like The Jam, Small Faces, Ocean Colour Scene, etc.

TV/Movies:
Big fan of TV shows and movies...when I get the chance to go. Was a huge fan of X Files, LOST and Oz when they were on. Doctor Who/Torchwood, Peep Show, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory are the shows I catch on a regular basis at the moment. As for films, I do like the old comic book movies and have "an interest" in comics in general - but I don't read them. Can't abide normal Action Movies though. Some of my favourite movies are Donnie Darko, Amrerican Psycho, Anchorman but my top pick is 12 Angry Men (go watch it NOW if you haven't already).

Fashion:
I don't follow fashion per se, but I'd say I am "fashionable". I pick up the bits of fashion that I like, I don't wear stuff because it's "on trend". Pretty much a jeans and t-shirt/shirt guy to varying degrees of smartness depending on the occasion. I have tattoos, which I guess are fashionable right now. But once again, I didn't get these done because they're "on trend".

Hobbies:
I try to go to the gym to stay in shape, not really into heavy lifting mainly because I don't have time. I have an XBox 360 that I rarely play so I wouldn't say I'm into gaming much anymore. Used to be big on going out at the weekend and getting wasted (alcohol only) but that's virtually stopped since I started working nights. And working nights means I don't have all that much time for hobbies anymore :(.

Asmo 07-31-2011 02:39 PM

I'd say the Internet "Wrestling Fan" stereotype is largely an Internet geek stereotype. Applies, or can be applied to the entire online community, rather than just wrestling fanboys. I'm including social & MMORPG games as well. Think movies (Die Hard 4), TV (Southpark - The World Of Warcraft episode), and you get the idea.

XL 07-31-2011 02:51 PM

Yeah, but I thought there was a cross-over between fans.

Triple Naitch 07-31-2011 03:12 PM

I enjoy video games, but can't spend more than an hour or so at a time playing them. Music-wise is mostly mainstream punk and 80s hair metal. I enjoy baseball, coach high school ball in the summer, and playing golf. I hate watching golf on tv though. Some tv shows I enjoy watching are Dexter, South Park, The League, Community, and Arrested Development. Wrestling though is the only show in which I try to watch live every time. Don't really have a movie preference, I'll watch whatever is out. My all-time favorite is probably Coming to America.

Things I wish I had...

A Cabin in the woods in PA or Upstate with shit I could shoot at like rabbits or turkey or cows. A four wheeler, a jet ski for the lake nearby, a shit ton of weed liqour and beer, an access to LSD because the guy's in town once a month....

I also have slaves but not the black or jewish kind, I pay them but they are still titles slaves, oh yes they are of the sexual variety but they cook and clean up my mess and take care of me when im gone from this world on the drugs and alcohol.

Probably also Lex Luger stops by to be like "listen dude you need to pull it together" and then I just say "Lex meet me in my ring by the lake under the gazebo" where I use the skills that my slaves have taught me oh yeah did I mention my slaves are WWE divas present and past, like Sunny (yeah even now), Stacey Keibler, Trish, Kelly, The Bellas, Nattie, and other fat bootie bitches and their daughters (for the future).

So I've really though this out and there ya go.

That's a streotype us fans have come to expect by now. I'm 27, and I can't count the amount of times I've been called an internet geek online. Though I sure as hell don't look like one in person:) I always find it interesting that ppl on the internet call each other geeks, when that streotype indeed goes for all internet users in general.

It's the main reason I like threads that focus on finding out more about ppl rather than upholding streotypes or popular perceptions...

Came to this thread because I heard TakerItEasy was back. Did not disappoint :'(

The thing is, everyone uses the internet today. Some douchebag jock or dumbass bitch could refer to people like us as 'internet geeks', but ten minutes later they'll be Facebook posting pictures of their reflections in the mirror or sharing some totally irrelevent update on the mundane existence they call life.

I find it ironic when ppl on the net streotype us wrestling fans, then turn around and be the very definition of "geek". I'd say updating your Facebook or Twitter every minute of your day is upholding the perception of being a nerd. As you can see from some of the replies here, alot of ppl here have more depth than a freaking streotype. Of course, labelling someone before you meet them is as shallow and narrow minded as you can get. Obviously being a geek and having common sense or intelligence don't necessarily go together. So, I never put much stock or value in those kind of opinions...

XL 07-31-2011 08:17 PM

Being on the net and being an internet geek are worlds apart though.

It's one thing to keep an up to date facebook profile, it's another thing entirely to dedicate hours on a forum discussing anything.

Malfeitor 07-31-2011 08:23 PM

Taker It Easy is fucking amazing. Just saying.

As for myself, I feel I do not fit into the typical wrestling fan stereotype.

I am a 25 year-old Straight Edge dude with an average build. My interests include music, playing guitar, collecting comics and graphic novels, playing video games, watching TV shows, etc.

Now those things may sound nerdy, in which they are. But if you seen me in person I don't think you'd expect me to be the dork type. I dress fairly simple. Either jeans and a shirt, or some Dickies shorts and usually a pair of Vans.

As for the music I listen to, I am a Hardcore kid. Bands like Earth Crisis, Trial, Strife, Etc. I listen to all types of metal, classic rock, hip hop, oldies, pretty much anything that sounds good to me.

As for the shows I like, LOST is the best show ever. I recently got into Sons Of Anarchy because my girlfriend got me into it. I'm also a fan of Dexter, The Walking Dead, Quantum Leap, Family Guy, Robot Chicken. I need to start watching Breaking Bad.

I'm tend to steer clear of the mainstream mainly when it comes to music, I don't dig on the crap they usually play on the radio. So I guess I'm anti-mainstream in that aspect. Also with lame ass 'reality' TV these days.

Lock Jaw 07-31-2011 08:32 PM

Gonna do this XL format.

I am a 26 year old male hailing from Parts Unknown.

Music: I don't really listen to music anymore. Used to listen to a lot. Mainly "Classic Rock". Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, etc. I still like them, I just never listen to music anymore. Used to listen on the bus/subways but gave it up for reading/writing on the bus. Don't really listen to music at home. Nowadays I will mostly just occasionally look up songs on youtube and listen to them after they have somehow become stuck in my head. I also tend to listen to movie soundtracks a lot because I like the emotional connections it gives. Saw X-Men First Class a few weeks ago and thus am still playing that music from time to time.

TV/Movies:
I love TV and Movies. Shows I currently watch are Futurama, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Dexter, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Boardwalk Empire, Walking Dead, Bored to Death, Breaking Bad. I think some of the most brilliant shows of all times are Frasier, Pushing Daisies, Firefly, Arrested Development, and Soap.
Movie wise, I don't like to play the "favorite" game. I like all kinds from around the world. Watch pretty much everything except horror movies, because I am a pussy. I notice that I tend to really like movies that are in trilogies (BttF, Star Wars, LotR, Godfather, even American Pie).

Fashion:
I am one of the least fashionable guys ever. Own like three pairs of jeans and the same set of 7-8 T-shirts for many many many years. I am well aware that I need new clothes, but despise shopping so much that I never get them.

Hobbies:
I do not work out at all (But am fairly skinny nonetheless). I do not play video games anymore. I am a big comic book nerd. Mainly DC Comics, though they might lose me soon, which is a big deal. They had to really screw the pooch to do that. I am looking to get into TV Production, and thus have been volunteering at the local cable station on various mobile sports productions. Been doing that so long that I have become one of the "senior volunteers" and have done pretty much every job (Technical Director, Camera Operator, Replay Operator... etc). Except audio. Directed my first baseball game today. Looking for paid work elsewhere, having no luck thus far.
I also enjoy writing and am writing several short films/web series/comic book series. These projects are all stalled because I am not actually that great at writing dialog. I can make plot points, but filling in the gap is where I get stuck.

How is staying on Facebook or Twitter every minute of the day any worse than spending hours on a forum??? Easy to call someone a internet geek when you judge yourself by a different standard. It's what I hate about ppl who judge wrestling fans. They have double standards. Spending large amounts of time on the internet is the same, whether it's on Facebook or here at TPWW...

Raven Reaper 08-01-2011 04:27 AM

Russian catfights on youtube like these: Look it up. It lasts longer than the stupid Divas matches put together. :P

Sorry, but in my opinion, it's not the same.

What do people do on facebook? Post pictures of themselves, talk to their friends, play a few of those game apps. We're not talking indepth stuff here.

These people don't spend hours debating a niche subject like wrestling. Arguing over whether somebody deserves the label "awesome" at this point in time, or whether they buy someone as a heel.

I guess the issue is what makes them a nerd? Being "on the internet" doesn't make you a nerd IMO. It's the reason that you do it that makes you a "nerd". Socialising on facebook doesn't make you a nerd, debating endlessly over any particular subject does.

GD 08-01-2011 05:59 AM

Spinning heel kick.
