"Post" is latin for "pretentious shit," so it fits.

I think "post" has its place, if not applied absurdly. "Post-punk" is very much a viable genre, for instance.

The term is a joke, and every bit as much a catch-all as "Nu Metal."

Ke$ha isn't even music.

What makes it a joke? It's describing music that is influenced by a particular genre or movement but has evolved in some way; yet clearly has its roots in a previously existing genre. It's post by definition.

In the same sense that "nu" metal is a new form of metal.

FakeLaser 10-23-2011 03:09 PM

The music sucks as a whole but the name makes sense.

St. Jimmy 10-23-2011 03:28 PM

i second ever "core" genre after hardcore and post-hardcore. most forms of "metal" too can eat the asshole.

Most basic metal genres are quite distinct and help you to identify if its something you may have an interest in. Power, Trash, Death and Black are all very distinct from each other.

Yes, but he didn't say "basic," did he? The majority of metal subgenres are not "basic," and range from stupidly specific to "so generic as to be completely meaningless." And in both cases, tend to be pretty fickle.

D Mac 10-23-2011 08:24 PM

Go back to your stupid obscure bullshit nobody cares about.

FakeLaser 10-23-2011 08:28 PM

I forgot a lot of people care about "Five Finger Death Punch"

D Mac 10-23-2011 08:29 PM

They do

FakeLaser 10-23-2011 08:30 PM

Alright

D Mac 10-23-2011 08:32 PM

Ok then :p

FakeLaser 10-23-2011 08:34 PM

No but they really don't

Buzzkill 10-23-2011 10:52 PM

Also, apparently most of my favorite music is classified as shoegaze. Don't know what the eff that means but I hate it.

My Morning Jacket and M83 have nothing in common, but they are both described as "shoegaze" by the professional bullshitters at Slant Magazine

FakeLaser 10-23-2011 11:10 PM

Neither of them are shoegaze

Shoegaze are late 80s/90s guitar driven bands that are loud as fuck, distorted and droney. They're shoegaze because there is no emphasis on performance. Most bands would just stand there and stare at their shoes the whole time, and not look at the crowd. Noise bands, sort of, more melodic though.

My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, Slowdive... that kinda thing. No Joy is an example of a modern shoegaze band.

My Morning Jacket is definitely not shoegaze. I dunno what I'd really call them other than just indie rock/pop. M83 is pretty much just electro. Maybe he's influenced by the whole "wall of sound" deal most shoegaze bands have going on, but it ends there.

BTW, feeling the new M83 a lot now

Buzzkill 10-24-2011 03:25 AM

"Shoegaze" developed as a term due to heavy use of pedals, ergo the guitarists were usually looking down. On top of stiff, immobile performances, which was already mentioned.

But hey, the way you stand or your use of pedals in live performance is totally a legit way to define a music genre.

Really happy with the success of this thread by the way

ron the dial 10-31-2011 11:25 AM

i should really spend more time worrying about the classification of the music that i listen to. seems super important.

Buzzkill 11-03-2011 12:55 AM

I was suggesting the exact opposite when I made the thread, tho it did get pretty feisty I have to admit

M83 is apparently dream pop / ethereal pop. It really ain't the last one. Listen to Utada Hikaru's Passion (Japanese version) or Sanctuary (English version) for a true dream pop / ethereal pop sound (if your going on genres)

Good News Gertie 11-23-2011 08:28 AM

shoegaze is not ethereal or dream pop.

Kapoutman 11-24-2011 07:44 PM

That's why I stopped putting my MP3s in folders according to their genre a long time ago. They're all in alphabetical order in a big "music" folder now.

Something I'm surprised hasn't been brought up yet is...under whose authority is say, VHS Dream, "post-chillwave"?

Some guy who works as a music critic who just decided to coin a new term? Then it gets accepted as canon?

Ice Cream Bar 12-21-2011 04:16 AM

World Wrestling Federation entrance themes

DrA 12-21-2011 04:24 AM

Much like electronic itself. What's the problem?

Buzzkill 12-31-2011 09:19 PM

That is not the point. I like a lot of "electronic music". The point is that those are 99% bullshit genres created by self important assholes who feel like coining new genres.

That was also not the point. You will note I did not say "electronic music sucks," though I do honestly think it does. That wasn't where I was going, and I'm pretty sure a clever boy knew that before he sought to lecture me as such.

Gertner 01-03-2012 11:58 AM

Folk music.
