Biggest Let down in games
This could be answered in a bunch of ways. Could be the game that you down the most, could be a feature, could be the ending to a game. Whatever. What is the biggest dissapointment you ever had as a gamer?
For me it's Dragon Age 2 easy. Never felt so crushed. I anticipated this more than more than i think i had anticipated any other game. the origional was just...wow. cant speak highly enough abnout origions. (which ironically i only purchased cause i thjought DA2 looked tops and wanted to play the origional first.) But the 2nd... The story was really interesting, the ending definitly makes me want to see where there going with it, mostly cause i LOVE the lore. But if the game play doesnt get some depth back and if my choices continue to have no relevence to the climax the next Dragon Age wont only be my last Dragon Age it will be my last Bioware title. So what are yours? |
I loved Dragon Age 2. Finished it about 5 times.
Marvel V Capcom 3 is one for sure. RE5 was pretty shocking. RE4 was so well recieved, why fuck with it to add multiplayer to the back of your box, fuck them. Rage is up there too. |

I also loved DA2, and I hated the first.

I think because it was much simpler to manage everything. I don't like the traditional RPG, which I guess the first was? I like the actiony kinds. Also preferred ME2 over the first.
|
I think everyone preferred ME2 over the first. Awesome game.
On topic, I'd say Mercenaries 2. |

though there is no forgiving them only using like 6 maps for everything. |

ME2. I could live with it if they just stripped out RPG elements like "lewt" and such, but the exploration is limited to conform with shooter levels, the design isn't a step up, I don't like switching away from ammo cooldowns, and most of all...fuck the story sideways. I mean, I'll admit, there was virtually NOTHING original about the story in the first one, but it was entertaining. Engrossing. Interesting. While I knew the clichés, I didn't care. Call it The Last Airbender Effect, because Avatar did more or less the same thing and again, I didn't fucing care because it was awesome. Mass Erect 2 was 80% keeping time. They tore everything apart so you'd have to build everything back up again, and that's just bad. It gets compared to Empire Strikes Back and that's true, if you trip out on shrooms and imagine that Empire was nothing more than a series of fetch quests for loyalty. No, the story of ME2 falls into a rather new cliché, "marking time in episode 2 because we need to pad this shit out for a trilogy." Which is funny, because with the ME novels written by one of the dudes who wrote ME, and the comics and shit, with all the DLC stories they're offering, they had more than two chapters worth of ideas. I don't mind the second act slowing down a bit, but this ground to a motherfucking halt. ....Unless you just wanted to shooty shooty aliens from behind chest-high walls, in which case you probably weren't intending to buy a Bioware title in the first place. |
Not being able to actually use the wiimote like a lightsaber in lightsaber duels
|
I preffered the mechanics of the first Dragon Age but the story of DA2 is what kept me going.
Could have done with more Alasdair though. |

Hate endings that are set up blatantly just for a sequel like the ending of Rainbow Six Vegas has the main villain flying away in a helicopter while you can't do anything to stop it even though you can actually shoot at the helicopter.
The game itself was good and full of action but then tosses a curveball in the story at the last minute just to make sure Vegas 2 was required to actually end the story. |

Fable, Fable 2, Fable 3, and probably every Fable that will come out.

Fable 2 was greatness minus the shitty co op and lag :(

3's in there for me though. Good god what the fuck were they thinking? |

I have TLC on my computer which I pick up every now and then. So far seems to be pretty good. |
Quote:
First one's the only one I really enjoyed. I didn't hate F2 or anything, but it wasn't very big on my list o' games. I'll get around to finishing it one of these days. The Fable games aren't really disappointments to me. Mostly because the first one was pretty damn good, and anyone stupid enough to believe Peter Molyneux's hype after 1 should probably just walk in front of a bus and get it over with,. |
As far as games go the Force Unleashed was pretty dissapointing. Endings, I would have to say Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2.
|
Quote:
From the looks of things, though, TFU 2 was a MASSIVE letdown. It was like Peter Molyneux did the PR for the game or something. |
Am I the only one sick of 10hr pop corn blockbuster action games? (God of War, FOrce Unleashed, etc)
|
The end of Metal Gear Solid 2
Quite a bizarre storyline that ultimately makes sense by the time the game ends. Only problem being that in order to get to that point you have to watch a cut sequence that feels as if it lasts for hours before the final part of the game which is quite a lame battle with Solidus. Cue the whole thing about the Patriots being ghosts... |
Quote:
They're good for some mindless slaughtering. And the harder difficulties of the GoW series require you to be damn near perfect in your execution of combos, blocks, and dodging or they would destroy you. |
Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike was a fair-sized letdown. I really didn't own a lot of Gamecube titles, but Rogue Squadron 2 and Skies of Arcadia to me were worth the price of admission. Ironic, since one was a remake....
With Rebel Strike, it was clear they were out of scenarios. Which is kind of a shame, because they hadn't even exhausted the scenarios from the movies, let alone Star Wars. Hell, I would have loved to have seen a few more space fights from the bad guys' side. Or revisiting a couple scenariions from the N64 one. But nooooooo....They pad the fucker out with half a dozen on-foot missions. While I joke about the Star Fox titles, I hear the on-foot stuff was actually decent. That's the difference between SF and RS. |

MGS2
Fable 2 Super Mario World 2 Smackdown: Just Bring It Ratchet and Clank: UYA Jet Li: Rise to Honor Modern Warfare 2 Resident Evil 5 GTA2 Gears of War MGS4 Halo 2 UFC 2010 SvR 2007 Doom 3 Amnesia: The Dark Descent Final Fantasy 8 Final Fantasy 9 Final Fantasy 10 Final Fantasy 10-2 Final Fantasy 11 Final Fantasy 12 That's off top of my head. |
i think the term "biggest" is really giving you issues
|
What doesn't give him issues?
|
all those I had high expectations for either cause I played the previous game in the series or it was hyped/told it was good.
|
In terms of biggest letdown though, top 3
MGS4 Halo 2 FFX |
MGS4? how so? (your opinion and such, just curious)
|
MGS3 is my favorite game and has been since I first completed it.
MGS4 seemed to be like "omfg gaiz, les cram as many great looking movie like cutscences as possible onto this bluray disc" With the abilities of a new system and storage medium capable of 10x the storage, I didn't expect an inferior game and its why I sold my PS3. |
i suppose thats valid
|
Then again, I'm not sure I'm being fair as I didn't expect it to be as good anyways. Same with Halo 2.
I suppose FFX would be. It was a chance at redemption. after 8 and 9. Wasn't up to 7's standard at all and spawned the first sequel ill never forgive them for. |
i actually replayed MGS4 2 weeks ago, admittedly not as good as snake eater, but still (for me) one of the all time great games.
|
Quote:
MGS4 I can understand, what with all the cut scenes and all... But it does tie the series up nicely and IMO is a masterpiece, more as a story than a game though... Halo 2...? Pretty much kick started online console multiplayer. Plus with an amazing community. FFX is beautiful, favourite next to IX... |

Halo 2 ending was wank.

I have noticed a trend in the games I listed, most of them came out directly after an exceptional game in the series or was hyped to hell and back by either the media or people I know.
MGS2 - After playing the first, not having Snake as the main character, being on an oil rig and having some of the most annoying cut scenes and gameplay at certain points made it for a lousy follow up. Fable 2 - I played TLC before this and while it is a good game, I thought it would be better. Super Mario World 2 - I don't think its fair, as Super Mario World is a classic. Smackdown: Just Bring It - Thanks for eating my memory card along with a few hours of my life playing this crap. Ratchet and Clank: UYA - Going Commando was better across the board. Jet Li: Rise to Honor - So many commercials, so little fun. Modern Warfare 2 - After COD4's single player, I didn't like this at all and I never touched Black Ops single player. Resident Evil 5 - Sweet jesus motherfucking christ, whoever thought of Sheeva should be punched in the fucking balls until their nose bleeds. GTA2 - The original was a classic, this seems like a holdover to GTA3 Gears of War - It didn't feel any different from any other shooter to me. MGS4 - Reason Above Halo 2 - Reason Above UFC 2010 - Felt same as UFC 2009 SvR 2007 - I played the shit out of SvR 2006, played like an hour of this and was like :\ Doom 3 - No flashlights on any gun made me switch back and forth from flashlight to gun over and over and over and over. It was a good game, but that annoyed me. Amnesia: The Dark Descent - Not as scary as people say. Final Fantasy 8 - Story. Final Fantasy 9 - Right out of the Blue Necron Final Fantasy 10 - Reasons above. Final Fantasy 10-2 - ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH FUCK YOU SQUARE ENIX! FUCK YOU! Final Fantasy 11 - Honestly, shouldnt be here because it was alright but again, I expected more. Final Fantasy 12 - Same as 11 |

Bliztball? Terrible characters? Blitzball? Dungeons that were beautiful and still boring? Blitzball? I don't hate Blitzball, btw. Just hear people bitch about it ALL THE FUCKING TIME. It's not THAT bad. Part of what poisoned it for me was that it was one of the first major RPGs with voiceovers. Not sure if it was the first, don't care. Voiceovers, especially in those days, meant more linearity and less character options. These days, we're getting a little multipathign back, but not much. on top of it being voiced, the voices were awful and the characters were terrible. Not every FF game was full of winners, but you could mitigate their badness by not having to listen to them. Voiceovers for a shitty haracter just highlight the shittiness. Plus, the world seemed less spectacular. I don't know, FFVII for all its flaws, wowed us with FMV for the first time in a FF game, maybe an RPG in general on that scale. It wasn't JUST the fact that it was pretty advanced visually for the time, it was the sense of scope. And X lacked that. |
Quote:
Might I ask what you didn't like about FF7, that you thought was flawed. Not looking to start an argument, merely asking your opinion. |
I liked Blitzball, hated what was basically running down corridors with no real freedom.
They fixed that in 12 and made a great game and then just decided to go back to it for the arse rapingly horrible FF13. |
Quote:
The only reason they get such a huge fanbase is that people are turned on by the clichés they represent. |
So besides Cloud and Sephiroth, you enjoyed the game?
|
Aeris wooooooooo!
|
GTA 4. quite liked the story and a lot of the features, the graphics were amazing but you can't turn a corner without having to manually move the camera round with it, otherwise you're just getting in to head on collisions all the time. combined with the fact it feels like a slo-mo bambi on ice and considering how much i loved all the 3 series of GTA it just pisses me off i never got any replay value out of it because it felt too much like a chore to play.
|
also having shenmue discontinued after the second game. biggest blueballing in the history of gaming :'(

WWE SVR 2010, I played it for a couple of days and stopped. Why? Um, they took out the fucking SINGLE PLAYER modes. Unless you like random exhibition matches, why bother? No GM mode, no career mode.
Thank god SVR '11 had Universe mode to add some longevity. |
Who plays single player anymore? Give me 64-man multiplayer any day!
Preferably first person, brown and just like every other game in the last five years. |
It doesn't help in the case of SvR 2010 that even if you love online games, if more than 2 people are onlline at once, the servers just died.
|
Should have gone with a better model. Like the one above.
|
Jurassic Park on Super Nintendo.
You couldnt save the game and I had to leave my SNES on overnight to wake up and beat it. You get to the end all you see is a big Jurassic Park logo. I was young and I actually wrote to Nintendo to complain about it. |
Sounds pretty standard for an NES/SNES title.

The good news is, with modern games, you'd rarely have to worry bout leaving your console on overnight. You can usually knock them off in three hours. So unless you have a REAL early bedtime....

ZING!

...though I still feel burned by that "another castle" thing.
|
I'm going Uncharted 3. While still a great game, it doesn't stack up to the first 2 other than in the graphics department. The story seems to be getting going and then BAM it's over with no real climax or explanation of anything. Not to mention it has one of the easiest 'final boss' encounters in gaming history. Beat it the first time without even getting hit.
It's still a great game but I was expecting so much more than a pointless string of set piece moments. |
Too Human
Remember waiting years for this to come out. Seemed so cool. Loved the Idea of using Norse Mythology. Then a turd arrived and after my 5th "Resurrection" or so I just shut it off and never played again. |
Any James Bond game post-Goldeneye

I hate when games are abandoned, but sometimes I hate it more when they're released. Too Human really was a letdown, though, and considering the above, I kinda went in with low expectations. |
Really can't believe someone put Halo 2 on here. It's the sole reason that XBL did as well as it did and maybe the only reason we have xbox 360 today.
|
Quote:
Which is great, if you're such a multiplayer whore you need that shitty MP to get you through a game. |
lol @ 'shitty tacked on multiplayer'
You're an idiot. What was 'tacked on' about it? That's my main question to you, before I go on with the rest of my pseudo-rant about what a moronic comment that was. What was tacked on about its multiplayer? Halo 2 and the subsequent games are -focused- on the multiplayer. The reason the Halo series got popular was because of its multiplayer. It was a fluke. A mediocre/cliche single player game with a tacked on multiplayer (THAT was a tacked on multiplayer component), got insanely popular due to the fact that its multiplayer mechanics just WORKED, fluidly and took skill, with maps that were just well-designed. Halo 1 had an insanely devoted LAN gaming community that took Halo into Major League Gaming and took skill-based shooters to a whole different level. It wasn't just about the one-shot Counter-Strike crowd anymore. Halo 2 is regarded as one of its better multiplayer experiences, especially among the MLG crowd. Eklipse is right. Halo 2's matchmaking made XBL. Prior to that, in Halo 1, people used XboxConnect to play online with each other. A shitty lan-like service that was downright terrible, because they wanted multiplayer that bad. There was a very hardcore community that wanted more of a multiplayer experience, and Halo 2 delivered. I mean, I get if you suck at shooters, since Halo is pretty much the definition of a skill-based shooter. In fact, that's the only reason I can think of for thinking its Multiplayer is 'shitty and tacked on'. You're bad at it, and couldn't grasp the combination of its shooting/movement mechanics and apply it to a controller due to 'fat thumbs' or shitty reflexes. As far as shooters go, it was incredibly balanced. Weapons took skill and precision to use, and shots had to be placed accurately to take someone down because it is -not- a realistic shooter. The game itself had character, humor, and still took itself seriously enough to be a competitive shooter that attracted a very devoted crowd. Uh-oh, I used the 'you hate it because you suck at it' argument. Too bad it's entirely the case, because that's just the type of multiplayer it has. Quit being a little girl. This is just you talking out of your ass. I'm fully expecting you to just brush the majority of this post off and call me retarded in some fashion. Surprise me. |
I took it as he meant games after Halo 2 tried to copy it by adding shitty, tacked on multiplayer and not a knock at Halo 2.
|
I gathered that first part. That's pretty obvious. But look at who is posting it, and look at his earlier post as well. Why would he say it's the cause of it, if he didn't think it had that quality in the first place? I must be crazy to think Kane Knight is taking a swing at something.

Reboot was the biggest let-down for me. Was a fan of the show and figured that since it was completely CGI that the people who made the show would make a good game.
Game was worthless. |
It wasn't made by them, was it? I see the dev listed as EA.
I never played the game because before it came out, several publications listed it as "canceled." Maybe it came back, or maybe they were wrong, but by the time I knew otherwise, I'd heard how shit it was and didn't care. Hmm...We're in the Youtube era. Surprised I've never looked it up before. *looks* Oh God. That looks awful. |
In reference to Elipkse comment, a game multiplayer does not make. I'm talking story.
