Road Dogg was SHIT as a wrestler. All he had was that Michael Buffer rip-off intro.

Most of the guys mentioned here don't seem that shitty to me. Maybe not the best workers ever, but Ryder is definitely one of the bright spots when he gets into the ring. I loved his matches in ECW and on Superstars.

Although I agree that Rock got over mostly on his mic work, to put him in the same category as Zack Ryder is a bit of a stretch.

The Rock's in-ring work isn't GREAT, so WWE is really taking a risk by having him wrestle at Survivor Series, because once the novelty of seeing The Rock in the ring wears off, and he begins to actually wrestle, fans may just get bored, and turn on him...which could make for a heel turn, but still...

Should replace "shitty" with "average" in the thread title. Ryder, Miz, Anderson, Rock, etc are all "average" at worst.

All he needs to do is play the guy on the apron until Cena tags him in, and he hits all his signature moves on The Miz & R-Truth as the place goes APESHIT! Then the heels get a bit in on him, Cena makes the save, BAM! He turns around into a Rock Bottom and then The Rock walks out awaiting their match at Mania while Truth & Miz finish off Johnny Boy.

I'm in no way saying Ryder is on The Rock's level overall, but he was never that good in the ring. Would Dwayne be who he is today if he couldn't work a mic and had to get over on ring talent alone? Take away all that, I wouldn't say he's much better at all.

Even if Rock's wrestling at SS isn't great or even really good, he still has charisma flowing out the ass so every bump, every step, every punch and kick, clothesline, facial expression, etc is gonna have some charismatic presence. He may not be one of the great "wrestlers" but he is one of the best performers.

Not arguing that either, but this thread is about shitty workers getting over with catchphrases. Given time Ryder could possibly be the same. Very slim chance, but even I never thought the Blue Chipper Rocky Miavia would ever amount to anything.

Don't want to sound like I'm hating Rocky here either, and I've even stated that I think Ryder is an average worker. Just saying I can see where Jimmy's coming from.

People don't care is someone has great "workrate" or whatever. They care about the Character. Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mr. McMahon, John Cena, all great characters, all made a tonne of money, all are considered by many to be the people who changed the Wrestling business forever, and made it HUGE.

Daniel Bryan, John Morrison, and many others who are great workers, find themselves in the mid-card because no one gives a shit about how good of a worker you are if they can't connect with your character.

Rock was NOT a shitty worker. When he was Rocky Maivia, maybe. But as the rock, the guy could work. bumped A LOT, worked hard, moved fast. Sure he did a shitty sharp shooter, but hehad his own distinct style. He moved with the same flare, charisma and energy to which he talked. VERY few could do that. He also had awesome timing in the ring.

To be fair, Road Dogg got over at a point in time where the crowd was so hot they would have creamed themselves for the hot dog vendor if he wrestled a match. And if he had a catchphrase, he'd probably be bigger'n Jesus.

the camera pans in on the winners face as he realizes, he turns and looks at the loser in the ring with the MITB case.

You're idea takes over a year to build and essentially "wastes" a briefcase.

The Rock isn't that great in the ring, no, but he's not a shitty worker by any stretch. He has a lot of energy and performs well. He may have the doom set and everything but he's second to none in taunting and the like.

So the topic. It's a lot deeper than this but I think an element of it is that people can get their fighting elsewhere more easily nowadays. But unless you're Muhammad Ali, most people don't talk as much trash as wrestlers. As far as actual catch phrases, it may be a simple way to make a connection through imitation. Don't really know.

Easier to sell merchandise if a wrestler has a popular catchphrase or a character-type than having just a wrestler who is amazing with actual wrestling skills but nothing else.

Hulk Hogan probably made Vince a ton more money just from those rip-able shirts and Hulk-a-mania headbands/rags alone than Mr Perfect or other exceptionally wrestling skilled talents did with their in-ring work. Mr Perfect might have earned money from people wanting to see good in-ring work but Hogan sold shows just from a promo or catchphrase alone.

Don't get me wrong I appreciate a good "workrate" as much as the next guy and love guys like Mr. Perfect, Bret, HBK and Kurt Angle. That being said, guys can still have great matches and feuds together without knowing every hold, counter, suplex or move in the book.

If Vince only hired guys purely on "workrate", and catch phrase or not, none of them could cut a promo or entertain, that would probably be the most boring wrestling show ever after the first couple of matches. I can only watch so much of two guys putting on a clinic if they have no personality or aren't entertaining outside of pure wrestling.

And saying that The Rock is a shitty worker or had no "workrate", and ONLY got over because of his catch phrases is like saying that Triple H only got over because of the MSG incident or only because of Stephanie, it's just absurd.

It's not really about workrate. At least not entirely, but some of these guys don't even look competent in the ring. The Rock is not a great "worker" in the sense of his skill or "moveset." He still puts on competent matches that look good.

Advocating people not look like utter shite in the ring is not the same as demanding indy darlings 9003 and 4632 put on a 30 minute clinic where they each use five hundred individual moves or whatever garbage they're doing in RoH these days.

Because this is not RoH where the only thing that matters is wrestling.

I just watched Rock vs Kurt Angle No Way Out '01. Let me tell you, Kurt Angle has had worse matches with "better wrestlers". The Rock is and always was one hell of an athlete. If he wasn't as good of an athlete, he definitely wouldn't have been as successful, because he could ALWAYS tell a story.

I've never gotten the "Rock isn't a great worker" crap. It's the same people who claim Sting wasn't either, which is also total garbage.
