Favorite "epic" songs
Epic can mean anything you want it to.
Radiohead - Exit Music for a Film Animal Collective - In The Flowers Muse - Knights of Cydonia The Darkness - Get Your Hands Off Of My Woman (Motherfucker) Electric Six - Danger (High Voltage) M83 - We Own the Sky Sigur Ros - Olsen Olsen Deadmau5 - Strobe (epic build up) |
My Morning Jacket - Gideon
Kanye West - Can't Tell Me Nothing Kanye West - Lost in the Word |
Will even take metal songs as acceptable answers
|
except epic can't mean anything people want it to, since it has, y'know, a definition. should've gone with a made-up word. otherwise, how are you accumulating anything other than a list of people's favourite songs, period? if epic doesn't mean the same thing to you as it does to me, then we're not really achieving anything here, are we?
|
Nope, and I realize this thread is entirely irrelevant, but post your favorite epic songs
|
Fine you fucking dick, post your favorite songs that have either epic climaxes, elicit powerful emotional responses using grandiose instrumentations, give you goosebumps, or just get you jacked to get your day going.

Lost in the World is just plain epic. I know it's cool to hate on Kanye, but he's one of the most universally acclaimed artists of the last decade, both critically and commercially. Don't you work for a music magazine? You should know that! |

Honestly the most overwhelming song of all time for me. If you haven't done psychedelics it might not hit home as much but holy christ I always feel like my mind is about to explode when it kicks in at 2:30 and builds thru the next minute.

I love M83, but We Own the Sky.. Epic? Hmmm, I guess it is what you think that word means to you.
For me an epic song has to last a fair whack (5/6mins + ) and have to build into something magnificent. Everything going on sorta thing. Something like: <iframe width="640" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/8cZGgtN42ns?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Beautiful |

A Guitar And A Heart, Coloring The Void and By The Kiss could all be short M83 epics I guess.
I like this new album, but their last 4 beat it for me. Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is probably on par with Digital Shades Vol.1 or maybe slightly better. I've listened to them for so long, I know when I like an M83 straight off, others grow on me. Every M83 song has had it's chance to grow, so I'd prob say It's (for me) their 4th best album. Beating Digital Shades and M83 in hindsight. |
Intro to this song Don't Be Light by Air always makes me laugh. It's epic gone mad.

You could argue that's "grand" not epic. It's what people think it means I guess Dr Knight. I mean, I use the word "epic" for things that in reality aren't. But that's the modern world.
The majority of classical music is epic in the natural musical sense of the word I suppose. But the 5/6 min thing? well, as I listed above, those M83 songs aren't above 5 mins. |
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/0ZYa5-LWAYQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
|
Most classical music is not, realistically, "epic." The O Fortunas and Beethoven's Fifths tend to actually be few and far between, actually.
There really is no "natural musical sense," so I'm assuming that just means "whatever I want it to mean" as well. But that's cool if you want it to be that way. I just think it's silly to preclude something like O Fortuna as "epic" due to the length. I guess that's part of my definition. So I asked a question. |
I guess it depends on yr definition of "epic" and a typical characteristic of other "epic" art forms are that they are lengthy; namely poetry ("The Epics.")
Not that I necessarily agree that it's a necessary component in "genre-tizing" or characterizing a song. The M83 song I posted, for instance, is under 3 minutes, but is definitely "epic-sounding." I guess because it conjures up "epic" imagery. |

I like it allooot! The beat is fucking sick to the next level. Die Antwoord's new album is gonna the shizz!! :p FOK THE SYSTEM! |
It depends on the person too for what images it conjours up. My mate loves Drake and Biggy, he keeps saying this and that about when he listens to music, I just don't get that though.
From what I've known growing up and seeing amongst elders and the media, generally epic is something that builds up and has shed loads going on. Orchestras, perhaps mazy guitars too in certain ways.... Most people who I know who like black metal describe it as epic metal to people who've perhaps head of Motorhead or something. I've heard one friend say Black metal is epic as it incorporates classical music at times, so obviously for him classical music is considered epic. As a child growing up and listen to a lot of classical music (which is totally out of the ordinary for where I grew up), I have to admit too that for me classical music = epic music most of the time. |
Along with the many definitions for epic, I also am a huge fan of songs that crossover into each other on an album. That being said.
[Avenged Sevenfold - I Won't See You Tonight Parts 1 & 2] Avenged Sevenfold - Sidewinder Avenged Sevenfold - Save Me [10 Years - Picture Perfect (In Your Eyes) 10 Years - All Your Lies] HIM - Sleepwalking Past Hope Shinedown - Lady So Divine Rush - La Villa Strangiato Metallica - The Call of Ktulu John Mayer - Out Of My Mind John Mayer - Covered In Rain [Evanescence - Tourniquet Evanescence - Imaginary] [Crossovers] |
