I listen to plenty of it, but you make me uncomfortable, so I won't be discussing it with you.

Wikipedia has it defined pretty well,

Usually the lyrics are either pagan/about nature/misanthropy or satanic.

Dimmu Borgir would qualify for Black Metal, but their later stuff has become more mainstream and therefore less creative...but I still like them.

Some of my favorite are Gehenna, Emperor, Immortal, Mistur, and Windir.

All the best bands in this genre, imo, are scandinavian, so it recieves little to no exposure in the US.

I like some black metal, but not a whole bunch. I like 1349, Kovenant, Thorns, some Emperor, Death (they're death metal but I love them) and the black metal influenced bands like Dimmu and Cradle.

I dig some Bathory, Dissection and a few others but not enough that I'd know albums I could always listen to.

Use to be really into the scene years ago.
Not so much anymore. Most bands are just clones. Still listen to a handful of bands. Mostly the classics.

Could someone explain the differences between Death Metal and Black Metal, using examples that actually make sense.

Also, Progressive Metal > Black Metal. :p

Started enjoying black metal only a couple of years back, and i think a lot of that had to do with watching Satyricon live. The chills and the abnormal vibe i experienced when they played "Mother North" had me rooted at the spot, scared shitless, and still wanting more and more of it.

That being said, i enjoy the drony-ness and the constant pummel of true Black Metal the most, although the new wave of post-black metal bands have also made the genre highly accessible, and dare i say it, a bit catchy and trendy as well.

Bands that i dig include Satyricon, 1349, Insomnium, Agalloch, Behemoth, Dornenreich, Fen, Drudkh, Enslaved, Gorgoroth, Ihsahn, Inquisition, Marduk, Mayhem, Melechesh, Nachymystium, Negura Bunget, Rotting Christ, Wolves In The Throne Room

"Mushroomhead" is not Black Metal, it's "Nu-Metal", or pop metal or whatever.

Listening to a new CD I found online recently, Foudre Noure - The Dark Gods. Really cool stuff, its a sort of "space-rock black metal". Very atmospheric.

Just gonna add that every metal band can be placed in one of six subgenres: Traditional Heavy Metal, Progressive Metal, Power Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal and Alternative Metal.

Everything else overcomplicates the fuck out of it. As far as I'm concerned Black, 'Post-Black' and any other 'true Norweigen' nonsense etc would all go under 'Death Metal'.

When I was in Sweden last year I popped into a "rock" music store. My God there were so many abstract genres, pretty sure 99% of them were made up.

Bunch of ridiculous nonsense like "Screamgore" and "Doomstep".

I disagree. There is a very big difference between Black and Death metal, Death is more distorted, and fast paced, basically, like Thrash only with growls, while Black is more melodic, slower paced, usually with a different vocal style. While Death metal has low, bass heavy growls, Black metal tends to have very "high" screams.

A more simplified analogy is to say that Death Metal is a heavier Thrash metal with distorted/growl vocals, while Black Metal is a depressive reflection of power metal.

I would say the genres are, Trash, Power, Death, Black and Doom. I see "nu- metal" as more relevant to pop music, than to any genre of metal.

I can see how the different genres could sound the same to somebody who doesn't listen to metal, or didnt listen to it for a long enough time, but to somebody who follows the genre, there are very distinct and strong differences between these basic "core" genres.

That list is flawed on SEVERAL levels.

But in response anyway, I only heard snippets and honestly, I don't care. They sound the same with the exception of Amon Amarth, but for all I know you've gone and picked out two songs from certain bands that are completely different and classed them as different genres.

It's like if I played a song by Shadow Gallery and Opeth. Neither sound anything like each other, but both could easily be classed as Progressive Metal. And then I could go into the whole overcomplicated bullshit like 'Shadow Gallery are traditional Prog Metal whilst Opeth are more of a Death-Prog-Core band' or some bollocks like that.

I still think there should be a tour with Nile, Amon Amarth, and some band whose gimmick is based on Greek Mythology.

That way, we'd get a metal show and a history lesson at the same time.

Just because you stick your fingers in your ears and refuse to even attempt to listen, doesn't mean there is no difference. Or, alternatively, just because you haven't listened to enough of each genre, doesn't mean there's no difference.

Its akin to an old person coming into this conversation and saying that all these styles, in addition to punk rock, glam rock and anything with an electric guitar, has the same sound and is all the same genre and style called "Rock" music.

Black Metal, especially Norweigean, has its own atmosphere. If you just listen to it in passing, hell, if you listen to any genre of music in passing, it can sound like a bunch of noise. But if you put the effort to actually listen and absorb the music, you will see the difference right away. Black metal is about painting an atmosphere, an atmosphere of harshness, and desolate misanthrophy. Black Metal is raw, attempting to recreate man's primordial reaction towards a cold world. Its not only the music, the instruments, that create this atmosphere and aim to pull those emotions out of you, but also the vocals and the lyrics.

Death metal on the other hand, is about pure ruthless agression.

But...if you don't want to even attempt to discern the difference and only listen to the genres in passing, you of course won't hear the difference.

And just because you assert a difference doesn't mean there is one.

This thread reminds me of some co workers I had when I worked at Tower Records in high school.

Nah, they're the same. It'll take more than a bit of ambience or lyrical themes to convince me there's a need for more than one genre name.

The only difference between Death and Black Metal is that I can read the band logos of Death bands.

I see a clear difference, and I am not alone, as there are numerous metal enthusiasts who would agree that they are two different genres. Then there's also those who would throw all of the metal genres into "rock" and dont see any differences. I also know a person who puts everything aside from classical music into "pop." (He listens exclusively to classical music, referring to all modern forms of music as the same).
I am not trying to convince you of anything, but I think its pretty ignorant to make the statement that the two genres are the same.

I can't differentiate between say, hip hop and rap music, but since I dont get deep into those genres, I am not going to sit there and say, "Well I dont hear any difference, so hip hop and rap are teh saemz!!!".

True. I've argued the opposite as well, arguing that Amon Amarth is death metal and not "viking" metal.

In college, one of my theory professors kept calling Cobain Icelandic Death Metal.

The labeling of Doom as "Stoner Metal" (which is a genre that is often used interchangeably with "Sludge Metal") is a big one. The absence of "Post-Punk," which had a much GREATER influence on Grunge is another big one. Also, the absence of "Sludge Metal" and it's influence on New Wave of American Heavy Metal is as well (Seriously, many of the bands are influenced by Clutch and/or Crowbar).

Doomstep sounds fucking badass

Check out Alestorm and Swashbuckler. Due to the fact that they have pirate themes/gimmicks (which are great and the music is fine) they label themselves as "pirate metal." I think this is the basic problem with metal, everything has to be specifically labeled so it is considered easier for the consumer to access it. IT's stupid as fuck, but it is what it is.
