Pacific Rim
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...x458-47141.png
I'm kinda surprised this doesn't have its own thread yet. Anyway, if you haven't heard about Pacific Rim yet, it's the next upcoming flick by Guillermo Del Toro, and it's kind of a new take on the classic Japanese giant-monster movies. Here's the official synopsis: Quote:
Is anyone else here incredibly excited about this movie? I've been a huge fan of the corny old monster movies for as long as I can remember. Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, I love that stuff. And now you've got Del Toro, arguably the best 'monster man' in movies since Ray Harryhausen, doing a full-on apocalyptic giant-monster epic. By all rights, this oughta be goddamn incredible. Between this and the upcoming reboot of Godzilla, I'm a very happy nerd right now. Here's Del Toro and the cast at the Pacific Rim panel at this year's Comic-Con: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/loviZ2NGCqo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I do like Del Toro's stuff, could be quite good.
That's a good cast. Except for Charlie Day, he's gotta be there for comic relief only and nothing else.
Dammit, when's Sons of Anarchy coming back? |
I am so down for this.
People seemed completely blown away by the footage shown at comic-con. I'm definitely down.

If this is done in Cloverfield style I will be sorely disappointed.
Nah I very much doubt it will be.
That clip does it in the Cloverfield style. Hope that's the end of it.
Why would it be?
It's just a teaser.
And they're not going to spend $200 million on a found footage film. |
All fair points, but the teaser worried me a bit. That's all.
dammit

Yep. |
Holy God yes.
FUKCING BRING IT ON
fucking JAX TELLER saves the world
I hold out hope that there will be rubber suited monsters. I should know better, as everything is CG anymore. Just saying.
Holy Shit.
GLAdOS is in it.
Pretty much.
That movie poster at first looked like a giant Robo John Chief of Halo! :P

This film just looks ridiculous. I have yet to decide whether that is a good or bad thing.
I love you all.

Is this the new Wii?
Yes.

By god. |
This is gonna be fucking great.
Idris Elba and Ron Perlman... I'm sold!
Still looks ridiculous, but quite possibly in an awesome way. |
It's like someone opened up a window into my perfect monster movie.

I've seen enough, bring it on. |
Going to bring my kids to see this I think.
points for getting a rim job while watching this movie.
this is easily the best event movie i've seen in years. it seems like del toro is very deliberately trying to buck some trends so rampant in these types of films lately. avoids fast cuts and close-ups; the mechas are all distinct and have clear strengths and weaknesses; the exposition and general set-up is swift (they don't take 40 minutes to get to the point); the sexual tension isn't overdone or drawn out, and really the only person majorly sexualised is the main dude; it doesn't feel like it goes on forever (it's 2hrs and 10min but it was still like... a necessary 2hrs and 10min, i guess)... and there's a levity to it that is so sorely lacking from other films of similar ilk. seriously, it's a wonderful, fun, HUGE movie. the performances are good enough for what it is, the aesthetics are gorgeous and idk, i feel like this will be a film people go back to year after year as a favourite. it won't win any oscars (maybe aside from visual achievement ones), but holy shit, it was fantastic. i was really, really pleasantly surprised. felt like a kid again. all of you, go see this movie.
Word of mouth is spreading on this one. Good stuff.
Maaaaaaaaaan.
pass
Definitely going to make this one of my few excursions to the cinema of this year.
Even though I know this is going to be a brainless excursion, I do feel compelled to go see this film, mainly, as I have stated before, it looks so ridiculous that it will either be the greatest or worst blockbuster of all time.
I will go see it first thing on Friday, at the AMC cinema, for a £4.50 ticket. I'm not wasting money on IMAX or what-have-you, or 3D. But the only film so far this year that I have enjoyed at the cinema is Whedon's A Much Ado About Nothing. Iron Man 3, Star Trek, and Man of Steel left me largely cold. But I am looking forward to Elysium. |
£4.50 a ticket? I want me some of that.
Yeah, before midday tickets are £4.50. Student tickets after midday are £4.80. Thankfully, my student card does not expire until September so I can wallow in cheap seats, regardless. Odeon can go suck a lemon.

This film is probably as close to a masterpiece as a blockbuster gets. Will post more later maybe but yeah go see it.
I liked it for what it were, but no "great" film. Furthermore, not enough Ron Perlman.
It was way better than Man of Steel, though. |
I also felt that the blonde chap from Sons of Anarchy was just transposing his Jax Teller persona on to this film; walk and all.
Was going to go see it tomorrow but sadly Odeon are showing it at stupidly restricted times for some reason so it doesn't fit with my plans. Have to do it another day.
you guys serious? This looks so stupid to me
Just got back from the movie. Some of the most fun I've had in a theater in a very long time.
Full review here. Dig it. |
I loved it
want to see a spinoff with Ron Perlman's character and Charlie Day's character just hanging out though |
Beaten at the domestic box office by Despicable Me 2 and fucking Grown Ups 2.
MAde about 90 mil worldwide though, so could be worse. I just want sequels :'( |
I loved the whole world they set up, where giant-monster attacks are just a fact of life. The idea of Kaiju-worshipping religions, the Kaiju organ black market, etc, it's just really really interesting. I have no idea how they'd do a sequel, but I want to see more of that setting.
i did not like it.... its basically the power rangers with out morphing
It was very fortuitous of the planet earth that when the space monster launched that emp, the gipsy danger was not effected because, unlike these new fandangeled mechs, it ran on analog.
And NOT digital |
Don't get me wrong, this movie was a metric butt ton of fun.
But that line really made me laugh |
