GODZILLA (2014)

Per deadline.com GODZILLA will be released May 16, 2014.

The Destroyer 09-14-2012 01:58 PM

A load of sequels and re-makes of pre-existing properties. What a summer of creativity.

Innovator 09-14-2012 03:32 PM

I'm just gonna wait for Mr. Nowhere Man's post about this...

Epic 09-14-2012 03:37 PM

WB needs to follow in the footsteps of G.M. Reinfeldt

Nowhere Man 09-14-2012 03:49 PM

Aaaaaaand here I am.

They actually announced this back at Comic Con, with a surprise teaser trailer at the end of the Pacific Rim panel, and had a brief Q&A with the director Gareth Edwards. Unfortunately I can't find the teaser anywhere, but here's the Q&A:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ly9UeWvx1W8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

As well as a little concept art to show us what the new re-designed Godzilla looks like:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...dzilla2012.jpg

And, as far as I can tell, the only decent leaked screenshot from the teaser:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...n716/newgs.jpg

So anyway, about the movie itself. Gareth Edwards did a 'serious' monster movie in 2010 called Monsters. It's a pretty good flick, focusing more on the human drama and the social-political climate that would rise from something as insane as a giant monster invasion (not to mention it was a pretty heavy-handed metaphor for America's fearful or willingly ignorant attitude towards the drug war in Mexico). It's not something that'll blow you away, but it's good for what it is.

Now that he's taking the reins over the King of the Monsters himself, though......I'm cautiously optimistic. I mean, we've got a guy who clearly wants to make really good monster movies, and now he's being backed by a studio with a much bigger budget than he had for Monsters, which should allow him to do a lot more.

From what I've gathered, they're playing it closer to the original 1954 movie, where Godzilla is clearly the villain, an engine of nihilistic destruction and hate rather than the goofy children's hero he later became. I'm down with that, especially because it will put a much more definite distinction between this movie and Pacific Rim, which sounds like it's going to be much more about the campy monster-robot fights. If they're ever going to be able to make the monster movie function as a legitimate form of horror movie again, then hopefully this is the movie to do it.

They made Godzilla sexy :)

If that post came from anybody else I'd treat it as a joke.

Rammsteinmad 09-15-2012 11:13 AM

How often is there a Comic-Con? Feels like there's one every week.

Swiss Ultimate 09-15-2012 11:42 AM

The only one that matter is the one in San Diego. Annually.

Nowhere Man 09-15-2012 05:20 PM

Yeah, there's only one actual Comic-Con, and it's once a year in San Diego. There are a lot of other big cons out there (Wonder Con, Dragon*Con, NYCC, Wizard World, Gen-Con, et cetera), but the one true Comic-Con is the only one that movie studios really go for broke on.

Nowhere Man 07-23-2013 03:54 AM

The folks at this year's Comic-Con who went to the "Godzilla Encounter" attraction apparently were the first people to get a look at the new Godzilla. And it got leaked, so here's some footage from it:

http://movies.cosmicbooknews.com/con...t-look-monster

Gotta say, I'm loving it. Even if the movie sucks, at the very least, Godzilla looks and sounds like Godzilla this time.

Kalyx triaD 07-23-2013 03:39 PM

Where's the footage? Edit: Taken down by studio.

Lock Jaw 07-23-2013 03:43 PM

Looks like it got taken down from that site. Nothing much to see, anyways. Just a Big Lizard.

Curtis Anderson 07-23-2013 06:34 PM

I am really excited about this as I am a massive fan of the original. Hopefully they can get Matthew Roderick and Jeff Goldblum back on board.

It's a remake, so the original people won't be in it. Ryan Reynolds will be, though.

DaveBrawl 07-24-2013 09:30 AM

As the Green Lantern? It is a WB movie afterall.

Kane Knight 07-24-2013 10:37 AM

Nah. As Godzilla.

Ryan Reynolds is the Nolan North of live-action film.

DaveBrawl 07-24-2013 10:43 AM

Aww I want to see Godzilla fight the Green Lantern.

slik 10-04-2013 02:47 PM

I'd probably be more excited by this if Pacific Rim hadn't come out earlier this year.

Nowhere Man 10-04-2013 07:08 PM

Here's another link to the teaser, while it lasts.

Also, I just came.

Kane Knight 10-04-2013 08:42 PM

Saw it elsewhere. :y:

Kalyx triaD 10-04-2013 09:12 PM

Nice. Epic even in a post Pacific Rim world.

God I hope they got it right this time.....

Shadow 10-05-2013 03:37 PM

With what that teaser just revealed....

I full expect Godzilla to tear up another city while fighting another monster.

Kalyx triaD 10-05-2013 03:39 PM

Looks right to me.

alvarado52 10-05-2013 10:43 PM

Chills. Well, that teaser clearly shows another big all monster on the ground, and 'Zilla still standing.

Godzilla versus Obama.

Nowhere Man 10-07-2013 02:00 PM

So, I was just thinking....that dead caterpillar thing in the teaser.....possibly a Mothra larva? I know they've said there will be other monsters in this, but they haven't said if Godzilla's going to fight some more of Toho's franchise monsters or if they'll be original ones.

Shadow 10-07-2013 06:20 PM

Kinda thinking it'll be original. Just cause we haven't had any new monsters in ages.

Impact! 10-08-2013 03:58 AM

Pretty damn excited for this. Finally got round to buying Godzilla Vs Biolante (to add to the collection), so my excitement for the movie has been re-ignited.

Hanso Amore 12-10-2013 03:29 PM

SPLOOOOOOOOOGE

Hanso Amore 12-10-2013 03:31 PM

Seriously Fuck me running that looks gooooooooood

Kalyx triaD 12-10-2013 03:41 PM

That trailer makes the last American version looks like modern sin. And it certainly looks different enough from Pacific Rim (go see it if you didn't, btw) to avoid too much overlap or repeated themes.

That HALO drop was intense and terrifying.

Blitz 12-10-2013 04:43 PM

Gareth Edwards is 100% the right guy for this.

Blonde Moment 12-10-2013 08:24 PM

We need to stamp out all traces of the 1998 version to pave the way for the arrival of the true American Godzilla

Nowhere Man 12-10-2013 08:29 PM

Holy crap, this movie looks incredible.

YOUR Hero 12-10-2013 10:12 PM

Is Matthew Brodrick innit?

KIRA 12-10-2013 10:26 PM

Shadow 12-11-2013 01:56 PM

The King has returned

mitch_h 12-11-2013 09:40 PM

Trailer was good, liked the use of the 2001 theme. Really hope this isn't like Man of Steel where you get a cool atmospheric trailer, but end up with a shitty dumb movie.

Nowhere Man 12-12-2013 05:46 PM

Well, one thing this has over Man of Steel is that Godzilla is supposed to be mindless destruction porn.

Nowhere Man 02-25-2014 02:41 PM

OH SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII--

Godzilla is the danger

Skippord 02-25-2014 04:26 PM

I would kill to have Godzilla give a monologue about half measures at some point

VSG 02-25-2014 05:11 PM

That trailer is the bomb!

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2014 05:36 PM

Scared shitless.

Damian Rey 02-25-2014 07:36 PM

I hope this epic, because, the last 2 trailers have got me very excited.

Lock Jaw 02-25-2014 08:23 PM

Looks pretty sweet. Like how the trailer still doesn't show much of Godzilla.... makes me look forward to seeing him tear s*** up.

Nowhere Man 02-25-2014 08:34 PM

I'm seeing glimpses of another monster in there. One that has some pterodactyl wings....

....if we get Godzilla versus Rodan in this, I will be so goddamn happy.

Shadow 02-25-2014 09:38 PM

Gonna be some centipede like thing.

I CAN'T WAIT!

Lock Jaw 02-25-2014 10:16 PM

They should only have Godzilla in this movie. Keep all other monsters out.

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2014 10:53 PM

Probably a mini-boss thing for the humans anyway.

Lock Jaw 02-25-2014 10:56 PM

I did think that I maybe saw some... eggs... or something? Hope they also don't go the "Godzilla eggs" angle.

Just have Godzilla and that's it.

Blonde Moment 02-25-2014 11:07 PM

I think Legendary Pictures just might have done it

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2014 11:16 PM

Being that Godzilla had a kid I wouldn't care if he had eggs so long as it works with the narrative.

Lock Jaw 02-25-2014 11:18 PM

Looking at the trailer again... seems like glowing orbs that are somehow growing around a missile or something....

Kalyx triaD 02-26-2014 12:12 AM

Radiation babies.

Shadow 02-26-2014 12:13 PM

Guys guys guys...we might be heading to Monster Island. Cause I think Rodan's the one plucking jets from the skies.

VSG 02-26-2014 01:53 PM

http://i58.tinypic.com/2qn2ud1.png

That's Rodan without question.

Godzilla was the Japanese dude saying, "The arrogance of man is thinking nature is in their control."

alvarado52 02-27-2014 03:20 AM

omfg i hope thats Rodan

Volchok 02-28-2014 12:22 AM

What part of Rodan is that in the bottom picture? I can see it in the first, but not the second one.

VSG 02-28-2014 03:02 PM

I figure the wings

Reavant 02-28-2014 03:11 PM

sweet... cloverfield with godzilla

Hanso Amore 03-02-2014 11:22 PM

How awesome would it be if it starts with Cloberfield surviving in NYC then ramapaging the US until it faces Gozilla.

Kalyx triaD 03-03-2014 03:08 AM

Cloverfield x Godzilla x Pacific Rim

Shadow 03-03-2014 01:17 PM

Then it just...dies. Seriously there's a reason why Godzilla is called the King of All Monsters.

Nowhere Man 03-03-2014 01:38 PM

Yeah, if Godzilla's going to fight other monsters, they need to focus on the ones already in his own franchise before even thinking about doing crossovers. There's already plenty to work with there: Rodan, Mothra, Gigan, Anguirus, maybe build up to some apocalyptic showdown with King Ghidorah in the final movie.

On the other hand, how sweet would it be if Pacific Rim's Jaeger program eventually gave birth to Mecha-Godzilla?

Kalyx triaD 03-03-2014 07:57 PM

On crossovers; looking back Godzilla vs King Kong was all kinds of ridiculous - even in terms of giant monster movies.

And lets just throw Power Rangers in there. Because you know.

Shadow 03-04-2014 10:14 PM

Well this movie is going to have some sort of centipede monster but I'm kinda excited if we also have Rodan in it.

As long as he's not brutally murdered just to be brutally murdered.

Kalyx triaD 03-04-2014 10:24 PM

I would hesitate to call it murder if he smashed a few buildings just moving around.

alvarado52 03-05-2014 12:05 PM

Well looks like Bandai did some damage control, but there was a leak of the monster from the trailer...and while the first image above doesnt resemble it, the second image is clearly the appendage of the Muto monster.

So ill still hold out hope that Rodan is that flying monster.

Edit: Found one, though not a close up.

Edit edit: close up.

http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps192df916.jpg

VSG 03-05-2014 12:43 PM

Ok ya I had no idea they were going with a new monster but that second screenie I posted definitely looks like the Muto monster now.

Jura 03-05-2014 01:34 PM

You guys just got Muto'd

VSG 03-05-2014 02:46 PM

I imagine Muto can fly as well then, and it is the one in my first screenshot too.

alvarado52 04-30-2014 12:30 AM

"let them fight"

What do you guys think....still Rodan?
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/G1pX97_0rxU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Kalyx triaD 04-30-2014 01:12 AM

I am hyped for some monster battles.

Lock Jaw 04-30-2014 01:42 AM

Damn. Was hoping for only Godzilla. Oh well. Still looks good.

McLegend 04-30-2014 07:26 AM

It's a not Rodan.

I'm glad there is another Monster in it.

The Destroyer 04-30-2014 07:32 AM

Quite looking forward to this now. Please don't suck.

Damian Rey 04-30-2014 11:15 AM

I liked it better when we were given the impression Godzilla was one who they were hiding. This gives away the surprise that he's not. Oh well. Still looks fucking awesome.

Impact! 04-30-2014 07:26 PM

It looks more like Battra than Mothra :?:

Sixx 05-06-2014 04:56 PM

Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Walter White. Sounds cool enough.

Went to see Captain America today and there was a nice long trailer for Godzilla. No mention in there of Muto though.

Kalyx triaD 05-15-2014 02:19 AM

Glorious.

You can hate 1/3rd of the movie and still be turned by the third act. King of monsters indeed.

Raven Reaper 05-15-2014 09:11 AM

Same here. Although I hated the backstory of Godzilla saying that they wanted to nuke him instead of the usual origin of how he came to be.. Stupid military. Still, the humans took a huuuge backseat in the final moments, they felt like being reduced to caricature actors with little development.

VSG 05-15-2014 10:26 AM

Fucking NY Daily News giving it a 2/5 to be "cool": http://www.nydailynews.com/entertain...icle-1.1792072

I will catch this over the weekend so won't be coming in here a whole lot.

El Vaquero de Infierno 05-15-2014 11:16 AM

Just seen it; found it rather "blah." But, I don't particularly care for Godzilla anyways, so maybe those not indifferent to the character might enjoy it more.

McLegend 05-17-2014 02:45 PM

I loved it. The monster battle was great.

McLegend 05-17-2014 03:09 PM

Two things

1) it was tough to get over the fact that Aaron- Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen were playing a married couple when they are brother and sister in an upcoming movie. It was tough.

2) I wanted more Heisenberg.
