Boy Meets World sequel series potentially on the way

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/tvnews.php?id=96661

Quote:

The Disney Channel is planning a follow-up series to the hit 1990's television show "Boy Meets World." TV Line is reporting that the adventures of Cory and Topanga will continue in "Girl Meets World," a new show that follows the characters' preteen daughter.

Created by Michael Jacobs and April Kelly, "Boy Meets World" aired from 1993 to 2000 and starred Ben Savage as Cory Matthews. Beginning with his life as a sixth grader, the series followed Cory through high school, to college and eventually into marriage with longtime love interest, Topanga Lawrence (Danielle Fishel).

Details on "Girl Meets World" are still very few, but the site notes that the network wants to have Savage and Fischel reprise their roles.
I dunno how I feel about this but if it gets Will Friedle back on TV, I feel like it's worth it.

Skippord 11-03-2012 05:50 AM

as long as everyone is back that is

Kalyx triaD 11-03-2012 06:06 AM

The idea of focusing on their daughter makes me feel very old, since the show would pick up in real time.

Must have Mr. Feeney; as a teacher, principle, whatever. His inexplicable tendency to stay in that family's life must remain.

Also Vader.

SlickyTrickyDamon 11-03-2012 06:06 AM

FEENY! FEENY!! FEENY!!! FEENAAAYYYY!! FEEEENNAAAAY!

Skippord 11-03-2012 06:13 AM

It'd be cool if Mr. Turner was their kid's teacher

Mr. Turner was the best

Blitz 11-03-2012 06:29 AM

Stewart Minkus should be the teacher obvs.

Schlomey 11-03-2012 09:03 AM

Deemed is on greys anatomy as a doctor. And he looks old as shit.

I'm in for this show btw. Where's Eric!?

Zeeboe 11-03-2012 09:16 AM

I liked the old show when I was a kid and teen, so for nostalgia and curiosity, I might be interested in watching one episode or two.

On a business side of things - If I was a producer, I'd say the show needs to have a fresh new cast. I'd be okay with cameos every now and then from the old timers, but the show should try to really focus on entertaining a whole new audience if they're looking to last. The only old cast members that should be there every week should be Savage and Fischel in a supporting role obviously much like how Corey's parents played supporting roles.

We're...we're really doing this?

Welp might as well see what the Full House cast is up to. As well as the Family Matters folks.

Kalyx triaD 11-03-2012 05:08 PM

Fuck it, full blown family crossover.

OssMan 11-03-2012 07:47 PM

If Feeny is a teacher at 85 good god! Rather see a cameo, and also

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Topanga.

Tom Guycott 11-04-2012 03:34 AM

Any excuse to get Topanga back on TV is a good one.

Optimus Bone 69 11-04-2012 10:45 AM

wasnt Mankind in this aswell?

Kris P Lettus 11-04-2012 12:03 PM

I understand having nostalgia and all but for a bunch of grown men to be "pumped" about a Disney show focused around a preteen girl is ridiculous..

You should all be ashamed of yourselves..

Kalyx triaD 11-04-2012 12:16 PM

Likewise, dudebro.

weather vane 11-04-2012 01:00 PM

Shadow and Kris P are awful.

Kris P Lettus 11-04-2012 01:12 PM

I am serious..

I'm all for reliving youth and holding nostagia for this you liked in your younger years, but to get excited about a rehashed tv show, which now features the life of an adolesent girl is fucking retarded..

I'm 31 years old.. You will be hard pressed to find me watching a show directed at teen girls regaurdless weather they tag a "boy meets world" label on it or not..

Triple Naitch 11-04-2012 01:19 PM

Regaurdless weather

SlickyTrickyDamon 11-04-2012 01:28 PM

Is that hot tall redhead still hot?

DrA 11-04-2012 02:00 PM

Hopefully this will lead to Boy Meets Girl.

Kris P that is why I said you were awful.

I see where Krispy is coming from.......but on that note, I'll probably try and watch 1-2 episodes for sheer curiosity.

I was a big fan of Boy Meets World back in the day.

P.s. TPWW - you've been great. :)

Shisen Kopf 11-04-2012 03:51 PM

I'm interested in seeing what Topanga looks like now and how big her boobs got. That's about it though.

I mean seeing Topanga and her ginormous rack will be nice but...that's just gonna last like 1 or 2 eps. You can't recapture the magic of Savage in a girl. It just won't be done.

No one of the age of 20 will put this on this must watch list but they will probably tune in (Or watch on the internet) the first episode or two. It will be interesting to see where they have put Cory at in his life.

Having it tie off to "Boy Meets World" will have parents, who were children, now push their own children to watch the show. It will help boost the ratings from the get go, even if slightly.

Wow girls mature at a younger age these days

OssMan 11-05-2012 12:51 AM

they never explained where the name topanga came from

you can't have a leading character with a name like that and just ignore it

the only time i even recall them acknowledging how strange of a name it is was the time corey said that if he married her his kid's name would be chewbacca

Tom Guycott 11-05-2012 01:07 AM

I just figured her mom was a hippie.

Also, this was the era of quirky female names, like Blossom and Six.

SlickyTrickyDamon 11-06-2012 04:42 AM

The only question will be how many actors will play Topanga's dad in this series if he's in it at all.

Next Big Thing 11-07-2012 01:52 PM

Wonder Years > Boy Meets World; Fred Savage > Ben Savage; Danica McKellar > Danielle Fischel.

SlickyTrickyDamon 11-07-2012 01:56 PM

During the run of their series Topanga was hotter than Winnie, but Danica has the victory on that in present time. I don't look back fondly of Winnie Cooper after watching the series again on Netflix. She was a first-class bitch.

I agree with you on the other things. Wonder Years was a better series than Boy Meets World, but it's also wrong to compare them to one another. They aren't really that similar other than having two Savage brothers in them and having on-again off again girlfriends. The series to truly compare the Wonder Years to is probably Freaks and Geeks instead in both style and content.

Winnie Cooper (Danica McKellar) was my first crush. I'm too young for the original airings, but I remember the show running on Nick at Nite and taping the episodes just for her. Show was great. Never thought Topanga was that attractive.

Kalyx triaD 11-07-2012 03:18 PM

I remember finding Topanga funny looking (and I believe the characters were my age), so when they grew up and she just got hot I wasn't sure if this was a case of 'delayed attraction' or she she just blossomed out of nowhere.

Was it her that changed... or me?

SlickyTrickyDamon 11-07-2012 06:22 PM

Both?

New detail is that Corey is probably going to be a 7-grade teacher just like Feeny and his daughter will be in the class.

I guess "MR. MATTHEWS  " will change to "MS. MATTHEWS."

Kalyx triaD 11-07-2012 08:36 PM

Not too sure about that there.

The show isn;t based around Toganga.. It is based around her 13 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER..

Why would this matter? Most of us wouldn't be watching it for the 13 year old daughter.

Also, it wasn't a bad show to begin with. Yes, Danielle Fischel got a lot of guys into/through the onset of puberty, but the show was actually pretty decent- and not just watchable for the utterly fuckable woman she grew into in the show's run. Hopefully, the new one wouldn't just be slapdashed together to cash in on nostalgia and actually be well written and executed. Then, it wouldn't be "guiltiy pleasure" territory where we're watching it with our kids (or not) simply to undress Topanga with our eyes.

Also, bullshit on Wonder Years. I don't look back fondly on that show because Winnie Cooper was a whore who fucked over Kevin every opportunity she got. Goddamn cockteaser. That's all I remember about the whole thing. That, and Fred Savage's JFK impersonation for some reason.

We're the same age. Topanga started getting hot around season two which was the first year of high school. Not sure when you're delayed reaction was, but it was about that time for Corey and most of the male audience of the same age myself included.

[MAYA] Please submit all ethnicities. 13 years old. Maya is Riley’s best friend and does not share Riley’s optimism. She is far darker and less trusting of the world. She is an only child and has never known her father, which immediately makes her relationship with both Riley and Cory Matthews very important to her although she’d never admit it. She is not a good student in school, but is a wonderful student of life and absolutely magnetic in attracting or intimidating the people in her sphere as she cares to. Dark and edgy, but just as fiercely loyal to Riley as Riley is to her. Which makes us want to believe that maybe there’s a good heart under the acerbic wit. Or maybe not. Series Regular

Kalyx triaD 11-08-2012 05:00 PM

That is also likely.

Next Big Thing 11-08-2012 06:23 PM

I actually agree with Kris P. If it's on the Disney Channel, I don't think the writing or subject matter is going to be geared towards 20-something males and this thread got kind of creepy.

TGIF was more of a family night of television. I don't watch the Disney Channel, but I'm pretty sure they're not targeting the 18-35 demographic. If this was going on ABC, I could see it, but not the Disney Channel.

Next Big Thing 11-08-2012 06:24 PM

Now that I think about it, this show would fit perfectly on Wednesday nights with Modern Family and the Middle if Disney wanted to go the family route, which makes it all the more likely this is just for the kiddies.

Kalyx triaD 11-08-2012 06:36 PM

I watch Power Rangers, dude, but on point;

I have a strong feeling that the writing will be smart enough to keep original fans in mind, otherwise they would have reboot the whole thing. Why bring back Cory and ToBANGa if the target audience were babies during their era? It's similar to bringing Tommy back for one PR season (also a Disney move) knowing the only people marking out would be those in their 20s/30s. They know what they're doing and our reactions are part of the plan.

But if you're creeped out then whatever.

Next Big Thing 11-08-2012 06:50 PM

Just because you watch Power Rangers, doesn't mean they're writing for you. Again, Disney could have put this on ABC if they wanted people in their 20s/30s to watch for Cory and "ToBANGa." Instead, they put it on the Disney Channel.

Do you know who the Disney Channel targets?

Quote:

Geared towards kids ages 6-14 and their families, Disney Channel's original series and movies cross cultural and geographic barriers, acting as an ambassador for The Walt Disney Company to young viewers and families worldwide. Disney Channel original series include “Hannah Montana” and “Good Luck Charlie,” the Top 2 TV series among Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14, as well as “Phineas and Ferb,” “Wizards of Waverly Place” and “The Suite Life on Deck.” “Fish Hooks,” a new animated comedy series produced by Disney Television Animation, debuted in September 2010, and was followed in November by the premiere of Disney Channel’s new dance-driven sitcom, “Shake It Up,” the channel's highest-rated original series in Tweens 9-14 to date, and cable's No. 1 series of all time through its first 13 episodes in the key audience demographic.
http://www.disneychannelmedianet.com...annelFacts.pdf

That's straight from the company's press guide and no where do they mention anyone over the age of 15 and I doubt they suddenly feel compelled to go after 20/30 year olds for that channel's viewership.

I'm not trying to piss on anyone's viewing habits or judge. As long as you're entertained, that's cool. Just don't forget you're watching a show on the Disney Channel based around a 13 year old girl, try to justify it because it includes some character you used to jerk it to when you were 12 or assume that the inclusion of "ToBANGa" is because Disney wants an influx of 20/30 year olds watching their show based around a 13 year old girl because they used to jerk it to the character playing her mother.

Skippord 11-08-2012 08:32 PM

who cares?

it's not like Boy Meets World was written for 20/30 year olds either and it's great.

Kris P Lettus 11-08-2012 08:39 PM

It's great to you because it was geared at your age demographic when it was aired..

If it debuted today, you wouldn't be a fan..

Skippord 11-08-2012 08:51 PM

Probably not, and I probably wouldn't be a fan of this show if I weren't a huge fan of the original show. Anyway it doesn't really warrant arguing about so I am not going to do it.

SlickyTrickyDamon 11-08-2012 09:43 PM

Don't know if this series will be able to have the serious issues episodes that Boy Meets World had. TV writers today seem content with making tv series without "very special episodes" concept because they don't think children today can handle it. Maybe they can't. TV used to have a social conscience, but now I think it's just all for entertainment.

And that's why a lot of shows nowadays are really crap that numbs people's brains. Looking back, I think the "very special episodes" of various TV series was a great idea, as it tackled various real-life issues, ranging from emergencies to family issues.

I think these kind of episodes should still be made, as it would give little kids a lesson in awareness for situations they may eventually go through in life.

I'll do it for you. ^_^

Some shows and movies, either intentially or unintentionally, transcend their intended demo. In this case, being based off a 20 year old show to begin with seems in line with giving a wink and a nod to the kids that grew up watching THAT show, and may now be watching THIS show with their own kids. And also still be aware that there ARE adults in the audience and not just make it complete "WTF am I watching?" mush. Kinda like what things like Pixar movies do at times, where kids and adults are laughing at the same scene, but for two totally different reasons. Sometimes, in the case with something like Adventure Time (now) or Ren & Stimpy (then), it's zany enough to be loved by adults everywhere without really being targeted towards them.

With that said, Kris P, you make it sound as if most people here are just salavating to watch the yet unknown "next potentially big thing" come onto the scene just to perv on her for the next 4-5 years and then hope she does porn immediately the second she hits 18, and discounting the fact that a combination of Daniel Fischel still looking amazing and basing the show on a show WE grew up watching in the first place might have anything to do with people wanting to see the show.

You seem to be getting carried away on the pedophle bandwagon.

Absolutely... unless it ends up being terribly done.

SlickyTrickyDamon 11-10-2012 01:54 AM

It's Disney Channel so the odds of it being terribly done are pretty high.

Michael "Mad Dog" Jacobs doing this makes me happy

Nothing wrong with catching a few shows out of curiosity.

Many of us were fans of the original show during the 1990's.

KaosDarksol 11-21-2012 04:32 PM

Will never be as great as the original but I really hope they don't royally screw this show up like most things on disney

Kris P Lettus 11-21-2012 06:59 PM

How often do you watch Disney??

Fignuts 11-25-2012 06:51 AM

They are going to watch it Krispy, and nothing you say will deter them. So why don't you just leave the thread alone?

SlickyTrickyDamon 11-25-2012 08:04 AM

I have a strong feeling the chicks friend will be Shawn's bastard child. Hope they dont bastardize Shawn into a clone of his dad just for the drama.

Pintint 11-25-2012 11:18 AM

Excited, but I'm afraid they'll mess it up.

A girl will be the lead. There may be ponies.

If Rainbow Dash is involved, I won't take my eyes off this show.

Girl meets world...with Rainbow Dash!
