Destiny: Age of Triumph

Fignuts 11-28-2012 02:42 AM

I am an open world addict, so I will definitely keep up with news for this.

If it's a bigger Fallout 3/NV... I'll be keeping track. Thanks.

Yeah sorry couldn't resist. ;)

This game has an awesome concept, can't wait to find out more!

Emperor Smeat 11-28-2012 01:40 PM

:-\ I liked Halo Reach more than the previous Halo games although this one looks nice and gives off a Majora's Mask vibe with the falling moon-like object.

Is this the rumored MMO games as well?

Kalyx triaD 11-28-2012 03:37 PM

I'm not sure which rumors you mean but it's been discovered that this series will have either sequels or large expansions well into the next console cycle. Everything so far makes this sound like an MMO.

dronepool 11-28-2012 05:10 PM

I hope not. No way am I buying a game and paying monthly to play- not worth it in the long run. I don't think anything but a Fallout the size of three or four recent Fallout's would make me consider it. I just love that world, game play... ect

RoXer 11-28-2012 05:13 PM

Stop talking about Fallout, that's not what this is

dronepool 11-28-2012 05:15 PM

I know, just saying if it's a MMO I wouldn't want to get too into it.

Kalyx triaD 11-28-2012 05:44 PM

It probably wouldn't have a subscription model, since that's why we don't see MMO's on 360 to begin with. The gameplay will likely be much more action oriented than the number crunching Fallout (and most MMOs in general). This will something quite different, I think, so immediately comparing it to an existing game may not be the way to look at it.

I think it will be a relatively massively multiplayer game with a strong emphasis on community. There will much exploration as it may be an open world game or at least something with very large environments. There will be a high degree of customization and how to participate in your immediate group. There won't be a high regard for competition in the vein of other FPS games (no deathmatch, etc) but instead a lot of cooperation and inclusive gameplay overall.

This is on top of it being a brand new IP, something we all could look forward to, and new universe/mythology to explore and help shape.

Tommy Gunn 11-28-2012 06:15 PM

I like the idea of a new IP and getting in on the ground floor to enjoy it from the beginning. I didn't get into the Mass Effect games until a year after 2 was released.

Emperor Smeat 11-30-2012 05:31 PM

Turns out Halo ODST had an Easter Egg involving the Destiny project. Originally discovered earlier in the year but only recently confirmed by Bungie to be an actual Easter Egg related to this project.

- Big reveals this Sunday for this game. Journalists are already in the know but they are locked down by an embargo. Next week should be interesting.

- Bungie recently overhauled their site. Many changes are meant to optimize social aspects and connectivity. I'm certain this is in-line with whatever their game is going for (I'm still thinking some kind of co-op heavy adventure deal).

http://www.bungie.net/

Set up your accounts, though your Bnet account will still work. They can now be linked to your Facebook and Google+ profiles. I get the feeling this will be important, so you TPdubbers set your shit up before what I imagine to be server crashes when shit hits the fan come launch. I'll be easy to find.

Bullet points in a bit, making a new blog update over this game.

LoDownM 02-17-2013 10:26 PM

Seems to me that it's going to be an "always online" type thing with no single player, and that kinda turns me off. Hopefully I'm wrong, really interested in the game.

Emperor Smeat 02-17-2013 11:14 PM

There is single player and co-op available for the game but believe both also require a constant connection.

Also borrows heavily from Halo for the FPS aspects and MMOs for the overall world and scope aspect. No fees/subscriptions though.

Kalyx triaD 02-18-2013 01:28 AM

- MMO-ish, the matchmaking connects you to players in certain instances at random, unless you party up before a quest. You can play it completely solo, but you must be connected since the everybody's playing in a shared world. I imagine you can make it so you never have to meet people, an inverse of some fighting game arcade mode matchmaking. So you can play it solo, but in a shared world where players' action impact it.
- The world (which includes off terra locations like Mars and the Moon) has a day/night cycle and plenty of places to explore. The guardian hub is where you start and meet people. It seems you won't have a point where 1000 players are in one place, that doesn't seem to be what Bungie wants.
- You can get a spacecraft (earning it some way) to travel off world, andthere will be different types. Whether traveling is a 'warp' with a loadscreen or actually you space traveling is up in the air. Bear in mind the last big innovation for Bungie's Halo was a space dogfight.
- There are three classes so far; Titan (guns), Hunter (marksman), and a Warlock or something who uses "magic". Knowing Bungie's pedigree I doubt it's actually magic in the mystical sense, but some cosmic tech that might as well be magic in a Jack Kirby sense. Technically speaking for gameplay - yeah it's pretty much magic. How these classes differ in gameplay (health, damage, etc) is yet to be revealed, as well as whether there are more classes.
- There are vehicles to use, but I don't know if you can claim one to have always or if you find them.
- There is competitive PvP, but you opt into it. There are no 'PvP Zones' or whatever. In this mode you can earn stuff to have and to hold anywhere.
- Your character is fully customizable; weapons, gear, fashion.
- The social aspect they're leaning to probably means factions/guilds/clans but we'll see.
- One type of enemy are 'Space Zombie' things.

Extreme Angle 02-18-2013 04:41 AM

Yeah there's guildes, if you pause during the video of the website, it shows guilds.

lol Right.

drave 02-19-2013 11:52 AM

This has the potential to be greatness in a box. The FPSMMO take is nice, but all the features discussed thus far sounds great too.

Always connected shouldn't be a big deal for most, not as bad as say, Diablo 3 or something. None the less, I hope they make it where all content could be explored solo. That turned me off WoW, amongst many other factors.

Kalyx triaD 02-19-2013 12:10 PM

They specifically noted that you could play the game entirely solo. I don't think you'll be forced in any multiplayer situation, but I imagine they're give a lot of incentive to do so.

Emperor Smeat 02-19-2013 05:05 PM

According to some source code digging on Destiny's webpage, Bungie could be planning on including the game beyond just the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Listed in the source code were Wii U, PC, PS4, Xbox 720, and PS Vita for pre-order platforms although none active for the website.

So? You can "play all of" WoW too, but not the content they advertise for without a raid. THAT is the concern I have, just been misled by various titles in the past :)
Same could be said for Borderlands 2. Granted, with enough farming and tweaking, most Invincibles are solo-able, but not meant to be.

Let's hope that it's as it is written then :)

Bungie revealed some new details during last weeks' GDC expo.

Quote:

Bungie revealed three races for Destiny yesterday. First up there's your average run of the mill humans, who are the main inhabitants of the last city on earth. Then, since no MMO is complete without some Elven ladies running around there's the Awoken, which Bungie designed with Elves and Vampires in mind. And Finally there's the Exo, who's concept is comprised of Master chief, the undead and the Terminator.

Along with the Races, Bungie also listed three classes which they call fighting styles. The first style is the titan, who'll be a heavy tank class. The Hunter is a wandering gunman. And lastly, the Warlock is labeled with the awesome description of Space Wizard.

Bungie released some new details regarding the game's classes and setting:

Quote:

* Guardians: You are a Guardian of the last safe city on Earth, able to wield some of the Traveler’s incredible power. You are taking this mantle just as a new day dawns. Titans, Hunters, and Warlocks have finally returned to our long-lost worlds, only to find out we are not alone.

* Warlocks: Warlocks have long studied the Traveler, mastering some of its arcane energies. Its true purpose still remains a great mystery, but discovering truth has always driven you into the unknown. Now, our enemies are the only thing that stands between you and the lost wonders of our Golden Age.

* Titan: The first Titans built the Wall, and gave their lives to defend it. Now, you stand in the same high place, steadfast and sure, protecting all who shelter in your shadow. You hail from a long line of heroes, forged from strength and sacrifice. Our enemies may be deadly and merciless, but so are you.

* Hunter: Hunters once prowled the wilderness and wastelands, taking big risks for even bigger rewards. You’re no outlaw-at least, not anymore-but making your own luck has always meant bending the rules. Your unique brand of daring and ingenuity is needed now more than ever.

* Earth: The wilderness beyond the walls of the City are ruined and corrupted, claimed by nature and our enemies. From the war-torn fortresses of the Twilight Gap to the skyward steppes of Old Russia, evidence of our lost glory still litters the Earth, waiting to be rediscovered.

Bungie states Borderlands 2 and Far Cry 3 are the main inspirations behind the co-op mode for Destiny.

Quote:

According to Staten, the team at Bungie “would be idiots” to not examine “an awesome game like Borderlands and ask, ‘What are they doing well and how can we try to hit that same ball?’”

Of course, Bungie doesn’t turn to these titles looking to be derivative, but rather iterate on what they do well and pick up the slack when it comes to missed opportunities.

“When we look at a game like that, we look at the things they’re doing well and also at opportunities they might have missed that we can capitalize on,” Staten told Edge Online. “You can party up with a group of people and then go around with that group, but never in Borderlands are you going to collide with a group of other people doing it, too. We don’t do that just once or twice in the game, we do that all the time, everywhere. You see other people on the horizon, hear gunfire over a hill and see space magic flying behind some trees, and you know … there are other people out here, that [changes everything]. Borderlands right now is: ‘I’m going to walk into that space and we’re going to clear them out and keep going.’ And frankly that’s not just Borderlands, that’s any co-op shooter.”

Kalyx triaD 08-02-2013 06:13 PM

Good to hear. I have no qualms studios biting off and one-upping each other in terms of gameplay concepts. Don't be too proud. A big theme of my team's think-tank is not reinventing any wheels, just trying to make a better tire.

ClockShot 08-02-2013 06:45 PM

Far Cry 3, I was a human hunting humans. And 9x out of 10 they couldn't dial in on my location and come rush me. I was able to creep around the perimeter and drop them one by one. That's how good that game was.

I hope the same case works for the hunter class. I fire off one round from the sniper rifle from long range and you can't find me. Not "poof...you're discovered".

Kalyx triaD 08-02-2013 06:56 PM

The sniper rifle will almost surely have a smoke trail leading right to you, it's how they handled it in Reach. In any case, PvP will be handled in specific modes/zones. Don't think you could go out and kill people.

- You can call it on demand, after presumably earning/unlocking it somehow.
- They mention traveling will not be picking options on a menu, which sounds like you will have to traverse the main areas of the galaxy.
- It does not have weapons.
- Comes in three color schemes for each class.
- Seats one, no bare-back.
- Pretty fast.
- Essentially the Star Wars Speeders in the most blatant, awesome sense.

Reading the Kotaku mini preview of their 45 minutes with the game...

So far all im taking away from it is:

1) It's bares some pretty strong similarities to Halo

2) The pacing is sorta slow

Granted its obviously an Alpha build with aspects missing that give it it's RPG elements, but....im not entirely stoked about this. Began to lose interest in Halo after 2.

I'd imagine the Halo hardcore such as Kalyx will love it.

The people who do not like Halo will not.

And those on the fence will expect a Borderlands experience they will (probably) not get.

Fignuts 04-28-2014 01:50 PM

Yeah, never been huge on Halo. Kind of expected Destiny to have some Halo influence, but if it's exactly like Halo, then I dunno.

Patricia Hernandez Kotaku article is for the anti-gamer, so blah. Destructoid had a better one that hit the 'it's like Halo' notes, but mentioned more things you'd care about as an FPS gamer. I didn't care that I couldn't wall-run like Titanfall, or how nice Bungie's office looked, ugh Patricia.

The mode prevailed was Strikes, which involves three players and are short bursts of gameplay (short for Destiny meaning 20mins). Longer versions of this are called Patrols, which involve more exploration and options to abandon them.

I like the new footage but Strikes are something that could be explained in two paragraphs. I was hoping the journalists previewed things like Events, Patrols, Customization, and competitive. I guess things are being saved for E3. While I'm very excited, I must echo the Dtoid article's tone about how the super-secretive handling of Destiny's even common FPS features is beginning to strain. It's like Street Fighter 5 being coy about having a lifebar, or whether or not Ryu throws a fireball.

There are some kick-ass abilities in there, and I'm certain to be rocking the Wizard fucker. I love the class' coats.

Emperor Smeat 04-28-2014 05:44 PM

Bungie states they are currently working on allowing saves to be transferable from last gen consoles to current/next gen consoles. The reason is due to them currently expecting the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to sell the most during its launch period.

Activision states they are investing around $500 million for the game but are also expecting the game to become a billion dollar franchise like the Call of Duty series.

They also are fully aware the game's development has been a bit too expensive but expect future games in the series to be more normal in dev costs.

Quote:

At the Milken conference in Los Angeles last week, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said the company intends to spend $500 million on Bungie's new sci-fi shooter Destiny. That investment will go into covering development, marketing, packaging, infrastructure support, royalties, and other costs associated with the new intellectual property, reports Reuters.

Alpha test got extended for an unknown period of time. I guess the turned the difficulty up to 11 and got "expert mode" running right now. And there's some hiccups that could cause you to lose your data.

Play at your own risk.

Kalyx triaD 06-16-2014 05:57 PM

Was it confirmed that alpha gameplay would carry over data to the beta and then the actual game? Taking data from the beta to the full game I can understand, but I don't think your alpha stats are important really.

ClockShot 06-16-2014 08:00 PM

No data carry-over of any kind. Clean slate, I believe. Might wanna double check.

Kalyx triaD 06-16-2014 08:44 PM

So then talk of data getting erased on the last few days seem a non issue.

According to Amazon, Sony's exclusivity deal for the PS3 and PS4 versions is around a year long before that content will arrive for other platforms.

Xbox 360 and Xbox One beta expected to arrive in July but around a week or two after the PS3 and PS4 arrives (July 17th).

Starting July 17, as per the countdown on Destiny’s official page, the game’s beta will be available on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 respectively. Then, though not specified, the beta will arrive on Xbox 360 and Xbox One “soon after,” likely before the end of the month.
For those that care, Destiny got a Teen rating from the ESRB. Bungie says its due to them not specifically aiming for an M rated game nor having the level of blood and/or violence the Halo series usually gets for comparisons.

Halo never struck me as particularly violent anyway, but the ESRB are notoriously finicky.

The fact that they are spending 500 million developing and marketing the game, and that they have to sell as many units as possible just to break even also probably has a little to do with it.

Emperor Smeat 06-30-2014 05:49 PM

Bungie recently responded about the $500 million claim from Activision saying only a small amount has been used for actual game development.

The COO of Bungie believes Activision was probably implying that amount for their 10 year plan for the series and not just for the first game. Also revealed it was them and not Activision that wanted the plan for the series.

Dates and schedules for both the PS4 and Xbox One betas were announced.
Quote:

Activision just announced today that the Destiny beta, which is open to those that pre-order the game, will begin on July 17 at 10:00 a.m. PDT on PS3 and PS4. The beta will be available for those playing on Xbox One or Xbox 360 from July 23 at 10:00 a.m. PDT until July 27. It'll conclude on July 27 at 11:59 p.m. for all platforms, and it'll be unavailable on July 21 and 22 for scheduled maintenance.
Also announced were three special editions for the game.

Accompanying the beta dates are the reveal of three new "collector's" editions of Destiny. The Limited Edition and Ghost Edition both contain a steel case, field guide, postcards, star chart, digital ghost casing, digital player emblem, digital ship variant, and the Expansion Pass which seems to be a season pass that contains two significant DLC packs.

The Ghost Edition further includes a Ghost replica with motion-activated lights and voice recordings, a letter of introduction, and various "relics" including photos, patches, and stickers. The Limited Edition will retail for $99.99 and the Ghost Edition will sell for $149.99. There's also a Digital Guardian Edition retailing at $89.99 which contains a download of the game, the Expansion Pass, and the digital exclusives included in the other two editions. The Expansion Pass will sell for $34.99, and the DLC will be priced at $19.99 individually.

Is that short for a beta window?

Kalyx triaD 07-07-2014 07:50 PM

That's about right, really. Other Bungie betas didn't run any longer than two weeks.

Details about the upcoming Destiny beta have been revealed in a letter sent to GameStop and EB Games store managers, according to an image uploaded on Reddit.

According to the letter, the beta includes ”four story chapters, four competitive multiplayer maps, a cooperative Strike, and a huge world to explore with your own unique Guardian.”

PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 owners with beta access will be able to jump into the game from July 17 at 1 p.m. ET until July 21 when the servers will be taken offline for maintenance. The servers will be brought back online on July 23, at which point Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners with beta access will be able to get in on the action—along with PS3 and PS4 players—until July 27.

If you have a Destiny beta key then you will be given three download codes, one for you, and two to share with your friends.

Happy beta day, everybody.

Kalyx triaD 07-17-2014 02:42 PM

If you have a Sony console, anyway. Gonna be checking out streams today.

ClockShot 07-20-2014 07:52 AM

Ugh. Just bump the level cap and open up a few maps and missions already.

Kris P Lettus 07-20-2014 10:17 PM

I'm installing the beta now

teamXtremist 07-20-2014 11:27 PM

Anyone have any xtra us beta for xb1

Kalyx triaD 07-21-2014 01:43 AM

I will have three for XB1 actually. Thought of putting them on my blog.

dronepool 07-21-2014 01:22 PM

How is the beta/game? Don't have PS Plus but.... wanted to get it eventually for the free games.

Kalyx triaD 07-21-2014 02:38 PM

It's a slightly more realistic Halo (if you can believe that), from what I see in the Twitch streams. Everybody pretty much echoes that it feels really good.

ClockShot 07-21-2014 03:59 PM

Not a fan of the multiplayer aspect of it. They can do without the vehicles.

Capped out my Hunter. Gonna roll out a Warlock after the servers are back up.

Kalyx triaD 07-21-2014 04:47 PM

You realize this is a multiplayer game? Or do you mean the competitive modes?

ClockShot 07-21-2014 05:48 PM

Crucible/PVP part of it.
