ECW ruined pro wrestling for me..

Seriously, mid to late 90's ECW was the absolute best.. I mean WWF (1998 The Rock, SCSA) and WCW (1996 nWo) had their moments but from like 1995 to 2000 ECW put on some of the best wrestling shows of all time..

How they removed the curtain and made it more "real" was magical and can never be mimmicked, no matter how much money WWE has.. Then the overall hardcoreness, the luchadores, the actual wrestling, etc.. Going to TNN with Cyrus the Virus and Justin Asshole ruined it all..

I dunno, but the fact that this can never be replaced or recreated is a huge reason I no longer watch pro wrestling..

Now just use this to discuss ECW's awesomeness..

Kris P Lettus 12-31-2012 01:10 PM

I am watching my Heatwave 98 DVD and Tammy's dress just got ripped..

Think Mike Awesome is coming up with his siccccccc powerbombs..

Kris P Lettus 12-31-2012 01:12 PM

New Jack just got attacked by Jack Victory and the Dudley Boyzzzz in the parking lot..

[/spoiler]

Kris P Lettus 12-31-2012 01:12 PM

LOL John Kronus

Kris P Lettus 12-31-2012 01:13 PM

"Goldberg sucks!!" chants throughout the arena..

Kris P Lettus 12-31-2012 01:15 PM

Bill Alfonzo and RVD cutting sweet anti Asian promo's in the back..

Sabu getting mad when RVD touched him..

Kris P Lettus 12-31-2012 01:16 PM

It is the Mike Awesome Tanaka match..

Best.PowerBombs.Ever.

whiteyford 12-31-2012 01:20 PM

Mike Awesome should have been a bigger deal in wcw and wwe, no idea what happened there.

whiteyford 12-31-2012 01:25 PM

The Funk/Sabu barbwire match is still brutal too.

Kris P Lettus 12-31-2012 01:28 PM

Yeah, when Sabu's arm gets ripped open and he grabs some like gaffers tape from the ring and wraps it up and keeps fighting..

Then when all the stagehands have to come out with linemen pliers to cut them out of the barb wire..

Kris P Lettus 12-31-2012 01:40 PM

"Dreamer, you can give yr sooooooooul to Jesus, but yr ASS belongs to the Dudleyz!!"

Kris P Lettus 12-31-2012 01:45 PM

Love how Sabu and RVD fight and argue all the time yet are the tag champs..

So good..

whiteyford 12-31-2012 01:45 PM

Dudleys were amazing in ECW, shit talking the crowd:love:

Kris P Lettus 12-31-2012 01:52 PM

OMG yes

They were the inspiration for my username.. (really Chris P Lettuce was a jobber Mick Foley wrestled early in his career as mentioned in Have a Nice Day) Me and my black buddy Emmitt came up with the Lettus Brothers cause we favored Devon and Buh Buh Ray respectively.. I was Kris P and he was Iceberg Lettus.. Our manager was my buddy John who was Romaine Lettus the "head" of the Lettus family..

It was stupid backyard wrestling bullshit, but our gimmick, even though directly stolen, was the best out of all my friends..

p.s. Are finishing move was a double power bomb called The Lettus Shredder..

Iceberg, Kris P, and Knox in 2005..

D-Von's fish flop was always awesome.

Vastardikai 12-31-2012 04:36 PM

ECW really raised the bar. They brought us guys who at the time wouldn't have gone anywhere in WCW or WWE, and showed people what they could do. Through the syndicated show, people actually got their first real looks at Rey Misterio, Psicosis (fuck WCW's spelling), Super Crazy, Juventud, Eddie Guerrero, and Dean Malenko.

The stalwarts really couldn't have been big anywhere, due to various issues. Though he was pure unadulterated greatness as a heat machine, Shane Douglas had too many attitude problems to get over anywhere else. Despite being a good worker and having a marketable look, Tommy Dreamer was too dumb to go anywhere else. Taz was too short. Public Enemy made the Nasty Boys look like Tully and Arn, wrestling wise. 911 was a one trick pony, even moreso than the Sandman.

Saddest thing to me was how they always called ECW "Barbed Wire land" or the "Bingo Hall," but it did feature some of the best wrestling in the world at the same time as being a garbage wrestling hellhole. It also featured some of the best story telling. We'll never see angles as hot as the Sandman-Raven feud that featured the most gutwrenching line in all of pro-wrestling history: "Daddy, you're a drunk! I'm with Raven now!" As horrible as he was with money, Heyman could write a good wrestling show.

And many of the more Rocky Horror-esque crowd interactions debuted with the ECW arena crowd. The "Woooos" after chops I want to say started with the Mutants.

Kris P Lettus 12-31-2012 04:44 PM

There's more guys on that list than just them though..

Benoit, Stone Cold, Foley, Jericho, are all guys who wouldn't have gotten the fame they did if not for ECW..

Benoit, yes. Jericho had already done the rounds in SMW (and I want to say USWA), so he was almost certainly on some people's radars. When Austin was signed, it was because everyone who had a brain knew that the guy could work and put on a match that people would give a shit about (He was getting praises on air by folks like Paul E., Ric Flair, and Jesse Ventura even in WCW). Foley, however, definitely had a career renaissance in ECW. After already being known for having violent barbaric affairs all over the world, ECW was certainly a home away from home for him. I say the same thing for Terry Funk.

He just didn't have that "it" factor/charisma to me. Good size... could definitely put on a show for a guy his size... but he was a good upper-midcard guy who could have been used as a monster heel with a mouthpiece to put over a face main eventer on occasion.

Also, WCW was WCW. That has something to do with it.

Jericho was never in (any of the) USWA's. He's have been an awful fit there. Jericho got signed by WCW because of his match at Inoki's LA World Peace Festival in 96, Bisch offered him a spot there and then. Worth noting he came out to a load of ECW chants at that event.

Honestly think he could have been a main event player, in the same way as Khali/Ryback/Big Show etc, a guy whose a monster hoss. For a guy his size, some of the things he could do were phenomenal but yeah, needed a mouthpiece for anything more than a grrrrr arrrrgghhh promo.

The Condor 12-31-2012 05:33 PM

It was good for all types of fans- hardcore/garbage(Balls Mahoney, Axl Rotten), stiff brawling(Tazz, Dreamer), aerial (RVD, Sabu, Super Crazy), technical/workrate stuff(Lance Storm, Little Guido, Tajiri), and it tore WCW apart in terms of characters, storylines, and mic work. It was my favorite to watch from about 97-2000.

The Condor 12-31-2012 05:33 PM

My bad- it's Taz, not Tazz

Seth82 12-31-2012 05:43 PM

ECW was just so amazing from 1995-1998

I don't think any promotion today could come close to matching what ECW was. the storylines were just awesome. ECW didn't insult your intelligence like WWF/WCW did.

I always thought it was shitty the way WWE took a star like Taz who had this incredible aura about him and an awesome character, and they squashed him.

RVD's TV title reign was amazing both in how long he held the belt and almost every match was really good.

Also didn't help Awesome that his first real feud was with Hogan who squashed him a bunch of times along with Kidman at the same time. Then he got the Fat Chick Thrilla gimmick which probably killed whatever potential he had left.

SlickyTrickyDamon 12-31-2012 10:25 PM

ECW and hte Attitude Era in WWE shot a load. The load was so big that wrestling's dick is now limp. Maybe one day with enough celery intake we can get it back.

Fignuts 01-01-2013 02:52 AM

Mike Awesome was the man.

Krispy, you should check out FMW. It's where Masato Tanaka and Mike Awesome got there start, and there's some incredible hardcore stuff and good wrestling there. You want the true originators of Hardcore Wrestling, it's FMW.

Plus, you've got Hayabusa there, who was crazy good.

The Condor 01-01-2013 11:46 AM

And he may have come too late in the company's run, but Rhino being a viscous son of a bitch was great to watch in the beginning.

I liked it when he beat the shit out of women.

I also liked it when he was just a fat chubby kid when he came in.

I liked it the most when he admitted years after the fact that when he was TV Champ, he was living in a trailer.

GOOORRREEE!

Jerry Lynn has to be one of the most underrated wrestlers during his time in ECW.

MoFo 01-01-2013 02:11 PM

Rhyno was a fucking beast.

Also Joel Gertner = $$$ on the mic. Shame he was 'too dirty' for the mainstream promotions.

ECW was too violent which lead fans to want more violence. Those fans went to the league that was offering the most violence and now that's why UFC is king. ECW ruined it all.

Cornette was right! He was right!

Now all the ECW guys are broken down and nobody actually benefits from the ECW name except the WWE. If they were going to whore out professional wrestling they should have at least made more money.

Dayton, OH in the same arena where Shane Douglas beat 2 Cold Scorpio for the NWA title, then proclaimed it the ECW Title (it was still Eastern Championship Wrestling but Todd Gordon had already passed control to Heyman)..
