Should Rey Mysterio hang it up?
I think so. Dude gets injured when he so much as thinks about wrestling.
|
He and WWE must be thinking about it. But he's been such a big player for them I think they'd want to get him one last feud in. The problem is, as you said, as of late he's been getting injured almost instantly after returning so they can't build anything up for him.
|
Yes. He should have years ago. I can't even think of any match I'd really like to see him in even from the past five years.

Yes. He can barely last a few weeks or months before his knees get injured again.
Its possible he could become a part-timer but even then it would only be a matter of time before his knees got re-injured. |
It's time. A going away match is probably in the cards in the coming months, or at least it should
|
He'll go the route of 'Taker/HBK/ Triple H and wrestle when he feels like it, probably Wrestlemania season, I don't really have a problem with that as long as he's getting guys over.
|
GIVE IT UP REY YOUR DONE
|
As much as I'd hate to see it, yeah. Give him one last feud though.
|
No. Always happy to see him working with pretty much anybody.
|
though that's the "do you want him to" answer. No idea if he should or not, only he knows that
|
CSL nails it, as usual.
|
Shame that's all he's nailing.

Hey now

Rey's the goods. Hoping he retires for my Pink Slip Pool.

normally I don't like the "they should go" stuff but with a guy like Rey, whose style is based so much around his mobility/not really being able to take shortcuts, I'd like to think he'd know when he's banged up enough that it either adversely affects his performances too much or just isn't worth it anymore. He should be more than well off enough financially (unlike Flair) and has nothing whatsoever left to prove.
|
Yes, but I say that because I was never liked him much or disliked him, he was always just like "oh ok, it's Rey" to me. He could have good matches but lately he's been the filler superstar and I wouldn't miss his character.
|
Yes, but not before a victory circuit in ROH to give the locker room some mark-out moments!
|
i dont think rey can go the whole partt ime route to put guys over, because he can only play a face, and how "shocking " is it ever for a heel to beat up a guy rey's size? not very
|
CSL is correct. Rey is so good in the ring, my personal opinion would be to see him stay (but I don't mind him being kept off TV every now and then to keep him fresh), but he knows what state his body is in.
Would love to see Sin Cara vs. Rey Mysterio in a passing the torch match. Let them have one match at SummerSlam, since it's right near Rey's hometown, and have Rey go over there. Then raise the stakes for WrestleMania XXX and have them face each other in a Mask vs. Mask Match. If Rey wants to retire after that, let him, but there's nothing to say he can't keep working in the WWE without a mask. |
Really want to see Rey Mysterio vs. Hunico. Fuck that would be good.
|
So according to the front page, officials really want Mysterio to leave OR they really want Mysterio to stay.
Fantastic journalism guys. |
They want Mysterio to stay. He's a tremendous worker and he sells a ton of merch. There's absolutely no reason for them to want him to leave. The only thing is that they might get a bit annoyed that he gets hurt a lot -- but working such a crazy pace forever kind of does that to you. Rey has been in the WWE for like 11 years now. Keep the guy off television and have him return around SummerSlam time and give him something really special to do.
|
Rey Mysterio vs Sin Cara would make for a great secondary main event at SummerSlam. Sin Cara has really improved and adjusted. Makes you wonder how over he could have gotten if they wouldn't have thrown him to the wolves from the start.

Love Rey Mysterio, and the guys had a great career, but I really wouldn't be too bothered if he "retired" now (as much as anyone can truly retire in pro wrestling). The guy is just always getting injured now, I guess for his own sake he should give it up.
|
his last few runs have been kinda turds. i just don't see anything special about him anymore.
the whole "one last run" to a "retirement moment" thing would be cool though, i suppose. and it would def make money. but it has to stop there, no matter how many goofs keep crying for "one more run" after that. otherwise, yet another schtick will get burnt out and no one will care about anyone else's "retirement." my opinion is the most important one. |

He might as well. WWE has the top Mexican face in Of the River. Plus Sin Cara is pretty much the same thing. Back to selling oranges by the freeway Rey Rey.

Rey Mysterio vs. Sin Cara at SummerSlam would be pretty much perfect for both guys. I actually think they should give Rey the win in that match, and then have Sin Cara sort of lament the loss for a while afterwards. At WrestleMania XXX you can do Mysterio vs. Sin Cara II -- Mask vs. Mask. |
Quote:
What I was getting at was: how much stock can you put on a guy like Rey? How much time can you spend planning "something special" for a guy that's highly likely not to last long enough for the payoff? If anything, they should bring him back for something quite run of the mill/low key, into the team with Sin Cara so he can share the workload, a tag feud/title chase and if he manages to make it through that you plan that "something special". |
You misinterpreted what I was saying. I said that the WWE should give him time off to rest his body (reduce his workload), and then bring him back for like a special match to make a star and to make his appearances actually mean something.
|
I see.
|
I can see why you got what you did, I should have been clearer.
|
No worries. Hug?
|
Fuck yeah. Count me in.
|
I'd say yes because it's time for him to retire or at least give him a part time role to keep himself healthy or give him a mentor role to Sin Cara than tag with him. He's still popular with the kids and sells a lot of merchandise but give him one more run and see how that goes.
|
Yes, but he needs to pass the torch... And forget about Sin Cara, who is just about as injury prone as Mysterio.
I say have Hunico call out Mysterio about choosing Sin Cara as a protege over Hunico. Have a good feud over it. In the end have Mysterio fall to Hunico, respect him, etc. Maybe have Mysterio "pass the mask" onto Hunico, and Hunico can wear it (Call him Hunico Mysterio), or he could turn it down saying "Thanks, but I want to start my own legacy." Hunico would get put over, plus then there's an easy feud with Sin Cara or Del Rio down the line. |
Off topic, but I thought I should remind everyone...Mysterio was #14 at the Rumble this year...
The Curse is real! |
the guy wears a shirt in the ring cause he is so out of shape...

Put Hunico over Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara cleanly and then it's a clear path to Alberto Del Rio and the World Heavyweight Championship. I'm not saying that Hunico should be World Champion, but the man could at least have a really good match with the champion over the title. |
Why not just tell the current Sin Cara to fuck off and give that mantle back to Hunico, have him start cutting promos, and build towards mask v mask with Mysterio at Mania.
|
For his health, he probably should.
For my enjoyment of his work, fuck no. |
Because the real Sin Cara is actually really good and was a massive draw in Mexico because of who he is and the character that he portrayed. The WWE just needs to explain the character better and let Sin Cara continue to feel around the WWE style.
Hunico should be given a shot, but it should be as Hunico. Cut the stereotypes and just make him a bad-ass dude who is amazing in the ring with a massive chip on his shoulder since every time he looks in the mirror he has to remember losing to Sin Cara. They should really have a career rivalry. |
How does this sound as a potential scenario for Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara:
Antonio Cesaro remains United States Championship from now until SummerSlam 2013. Heading into the event, Cesaro informs us that when he retains the US Championship at the PPV, he will head into RAW the next night as US Champion for 365 days. No one can stop him. Enter Rey Mysterio. Rey points out that the US Championship is the only title he has never held in the WWE, and he wants a shot. The two fight and Cesaro ends up eating a 619. Also in the build-up, Cesaro attacks Sin Cara and kayfabe hurts Rey's protoge (if Sin Cara isn't actually hurt at the time -- zing!) SummerSlam has the two working a pretty hot opening match with Sin Cara at ringside. Cesaro earns control of the match, but he can't put Mysterio away. Out of desperation, Cesaro grabs the US Title and takes it into the ring. As it looks like he is about to blast Mysterio with it, Sin Cara hops up on the apron and grabs the belt from Cesaro, who is frustrated long enough to turn his back on Mysterio, allowing Rey to dropkick him from behind and set-up for the 619. Rey connects with his signature move and then comes off the top with a Frog Splash (not his usual Droppin' Da Dime splash, but an Eddie tribute). Rey gets the pin and becomes only the third man to have held every active championship in the WWE. Rey wants to defend the US Championship against his friend and ally, so the two have a match at Night of Champions which ends when Antonio Cesaro and his selected partner, Kassius Ohno, attack Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara, causing the double disqualification. Over the Limit has Rey and Sin Cara team up to face The Masters of the Universe, Cesaro & Ohno, with the heels stealing a victory there. Hell in a Cell is next, and they maybe do Cesaro vs. Sin Cara or something like that, with Ohno & Mysterio at ringside. Rey and Ohno get into a fight outside the ring, Sin Cara flies out to help Rey, but gets attacked upon re-entering the ring and is overpowered by Cesaro and loses. Survivor Series has Mysterio & Sin Cara on one team and Cesaro & Ohno on another in a traditional SS Elimination Match. Rey and Sin Cara have a bit of a miscommunication in this match which leads to both being eliminated. This leads to another US Championship match at the December PPV, which in my perfect world would be renamed "Starrcade," but is currently TLC. Rey retains the US Title there cleanly. Both Rey and Sin Cara participate in the Royal Rumble Match. Sin Cara perhaps has a bit of a marathon stint in there, and a fresh Mysterio comes to the ring later in the match and eliminates his new friendly rival without too much hassle at that point. Rey is later eliminated by some heel they want to look good. Perhaps between the Royal Rumble and the Elimination Chamber PPV, Rey defeats Sin Cara to earn a spot in an Elimination Chamber of some sorts. Rey doesn't win that, but does his thing. The challenge is made by Sin Cara through some sort of speaking surrogate who challenges Rey to a US Title match at WrestleMania. The losses appear to be eating up Sin Cara. Rey accepts the challenge, but the match is made "Mask vs. Mask" by some sort of heel authority figure who wants to make this really personal between Rey and Sin Cara. This is where Sin Cara gets his big win, becomes the new US Champion and gets a solid mid-card babyface push with Rey Mysterio's blessing. |
Rey and Sin Cara, both healthy for 6/7 months in a row? No chance.
Although, that bit about the speaking surrogate gave me an idea of a corrupt interprotater who, instead of translating what is being said, twists the words to cause issues between his client and others. Or did they do that with Khali/Ranjin Singh? |
Also, Rey/Sin Cara could always feud with Swagger should they see fit to "demote" Swagger after Mania. Could even get a Hunico face turn out of it.

They sort of already did Swagger vs. Sin Cara on RAW recently, but Sin Cara did come out of the match injured. Perhaps that is fine reason enough to go further with Swagger vs. Sin Cara. Would be a really big win for Sin Cara. |

Sin Cara Negro returns and defeats Rey Mysterio in a stipulation match, forcing Rey Rey to retire.

I don't care how they try to explain it, if he can't talk, he's not going to connect. There's zero reason as to why anyone would care about him and his luchador ways if no one knows who he is and what he stands for. Giving a face a mouthpiece seems like a waste to me. The Sin Cara character will never be what they envisioned him to be when they gave out his contract unless he's given a mic and connects with the crowd. If he doesn't speak English and can't do that, he's wasting time and money flip flopping around the ring in gimmick lighting because no one will ever care. The gimmick could be gold, and Mysterio could close the door on his career by passing the torch via mask versus mask, but if Mysterio is carrying all the mic work, or the match is just random, then it's going to fail and it won't mean a thing. Put Hunico, or someone else who can wrestle a similar style, under the mask, give him a mic and personality instead of a bland, faceless, non speaking hero who can only point and nod, and let them run with it. |

You can get people to understand the Sin Cara character through vignettes and hype videos. You have him tell stories in the ring. The mystery of why he never speaks becomes an intriguing character point and not a weakness. If you want to introduce a new masked character that is amazing on the mic, then by all means do it, but don't slip them into the Sin Cara role. |
Well, that's me told.

Yeah but if you would have told me in 2013 that I'd be excited to see Mysterio in 5 years, I'd have slapped your dick off.

Being outside WWE did wonders for him.
|
Even if he was coming back to WWE, it never should've been under a full-time schedule. His body was inevitably going to break down again, unfortunately.
|
Haven't read the thread but I would say to limit Rey to big shows and matches that absolutely have a purpose. I love Rey, but yeah he's getting hurt like he's Mark Henry in the early 2000's.
|
Starting to already hit him, it seems. A PPV series with Andrade would have been fine.
|
He should.
