What's next for Cena?
 

Storyline wise I have no idea whats next for him, he just beat punk awhile ago. Who does Cena beat next? Mark Henry? Brock again? The whole roster in a handicap-match?

To keep the rematches at big PPV theme it totally should be brock. If they wanted to be creative I'd say Cena vs Shield but then again I refuse to see Shield go out like Nexus and get fed to the machine.

I'd rather not have Brock fed to the Machine again.

Honestly, with his character so stale and boring at this point, I really don't care if he feuds with anyone. He's not the reason I tune into Raw every week, far from it in fact.

Cena vs Triple H so Triple h can have another fantastic title reign.

Company man vs Company man. If Punk was involved it was be booked with a lot of backstage politic shots...with Cena involved it will be more fart jokes and hairline insults. Still think it could work at this point because in reality.....nothing is left for John........

I'd welcome a HHH reign starting at Extreme Rulz more than Cena vs ____ for the next couple months.

I'm over it. Friends and I have all discussed this and come to the conclusion that we just will not watch Cena segments. We'll give it a a chance to see in the beginning, you never know if something shit on paper turns out ok, but I have little faith. Just don't care.

Hate to be such a sour cynic sometimes. I'm not really the typical IWC contrarian, but this does it to me.

I don't know what else there is for him to do now, if he didn't beat punk on raw a couple weeks ago I would say that would be the way to go but honestly now there is nothing left for him to accomplish character wise, maybe he go against taker at WM30 and the announcers say if he doesn't win the match "Cena will go down in history as the guy who could never win the big one."

Nope, he should probably retire cause people on the Internet don't like his matches.

I'm fine with his matches I just don't see a suitable antagonist for him now. One that makes me say "Wow I wonder who is going to win out of these 2" The closest I see is punk but they just wrestled.

Lets say Randy turned last night and aligned with the Shield I would think "Ok this could be a new interesting feud for Cena" But no that didn't happen. Cena vs The Shield as it stands now would not help either party.

Also the 2 other people who won the big matches last night (HHH/Taker) who you could then have feud with Cena are not going to be wrestling at Extreme Rules.

My general feeling right now is "If they don't do something spectacular tonight on raw it will not be my priority to watch it anymore on monday nights"

This. Combined with the fact that he has not changed or evolved his character/gimmick AT ALL in the last 3-4 years at least. Look at the greats (with the exception of Hogan, whose change was drastic but an anomaly) Shawn, HHH, Rock, Taker, Jericho, Austin, etc., they all gradually changed their characters, year after year, they would slowly evolve their characters. I don't feel like we've seen that in the slightest from Cena in years, he's happy being a stale mediocre character.

I think the lack of a clear cut nemesis makes Cena more intriguing... at least for now. I see Ziggler and his little group starting up with Cena again.

I would love for HHH to turn heel at some point and go at it with Cena.

He should be forced to take a sabbatical soon before he goes insane. Seemed to be on his mind when he got all emotional after Extreme Rules last year.

Does Rey Mysterio win only to have Cena miraculously defeat the invasion and return to the show in time to challenge and beat Rey in the closing minute and 35 seconds of the show? If not, you'd be a shit booker.

I hope Cena takes on the rest of the WWE roster in a modified Royal Rumble-style battle royale.

Throw in Punk and we have a battle royal on Raw to determine #1 contender

I would say if Barrett would have retained last night could have put him in a Champion vs Champion feud or something. Really not sure where they are gonna go. Maybe a huge turn saved for tonight, who knows? We didn't see after Mania last year the whole Brock thing playing out for Cena. Christian returning as a heel? Orton gets his turn tonight? I'd rather keep Shield strong and keep Cena away during this reign. I could see them going all demise of the Nexus on them though. :(

Well, you can cross Triple H and Undertaker off the list, since they're not going to be active. The same might be said for Brock, since he is never around much. Ryback (who is boring as shit) and Jericho are both faces, and neither is likely to turn. Anything involving Mark Henry is boring as hell as well, so Cena v. Henry would lose a ton of interest. The Shield should be a group effort, so mark them off the list for now.

So that leaves Dolph Co., Swagger, Show, Barrett, and Fan-Dodge-Durango.

Mark off Show, it's been done a ton.

Swagger could be good. Dolph Co. is fairly recent, but maybe. Pulling the trigger on Barrett and pushing him is a good idea, so that works. The movie ticket guy (who can't actually dance) has zero business being involved in anything high-profile. He's had one match.

Most of the ideas aren't really appealing.

The Rhodes Scholars maybe? Push Sandow? Sandow has tons of potential, and he'd be something fresh and new.

Christian, Bryan, Fandango, Ryback, Swagger, Cody, Sandow, Wade. All pretty "fresh" options to keep him ticking over.

Cena kinda buried Dolph in their last feud, I don't want to see that again.

It would be kinda "LAWL" if Cena went back on his word and just brought back the spinner belt tonight on RAW.

Probably between Big Show, Mark Henry, and Ryback as the big names currently available. Had Orton turned at Mania, he would have made the most sense.

Every one else is either currently busy or Cena previously trashed in matches/feuds.

We could do that, but why have a wrestling forum if you can't fantasize and bring up very unlikely scenarios, thus setting yourself up for disappointment for no reason at all?!

Hopefully Dolph finding an opening to cash in the briefcase and stop Cena's title run before it has a chance to really get started.

What I'd like to happen: Cena holds the belt for a few months and later loses it to someone new (possible Ryback) in an attempt to put them over.

What will probably happen: Cena will hold the title for fucking ever and break Punk's title reign so all the kiddies can go back to knowing their hero is the best, and everyone else can complain about the return of SuperCena.

This. His return to the top made perfect sense. I do agree that the "he can't win the big one" stuff was a bit ridiculous though. Cena has won more WWE Championships than anyone else in history. The question will be whether or not he is the absolute best. When the modern franchise took one one of yesteryear's top stars, he lost. The era he carried the company for looked inferior to the Attitude era. Cena couldn't beat The Rock. That was the story, and it was a good one. Now he has beaten The Rock and it's time for Cena to move on.

I'd love to see Cena against a whole range of people. Cena vs. Swagger, once Swagger gets built up a bit more, could be really amazing. Two different versions of America colliding. Chris Jericho and John Cena could have a great match built on respect, with the story being that Jericho could never defeat. There are fresh matches with guys like Cody Rhodes, Damien Sandow that could easily fill a RAW main event. There's Mark Henry.

The scenario I was toying around in my head the other night was Wade Barrett being made Cena's challenger for the UK tour. There will be a RAW taped in the UK, right? Since Cena, redemption story and all, really doesn't need to be the WWE Champion ever again in his life to remain credible, why not have Barrett defeat Cena cleanly to become the WWE Champion on the tour?

Yeah, the Barrett/Miz stuff was sort of boring, but Barrett himself can talk and is a good worker. When he's pushed to the main event, it looks like he belongs. It's when they use him for mid-card stuff that he sort of drags along. Barrett can side-step rematches with The Miz and interrupt Cena on the UK RAW in the name of his home country. Barrett reminds us there has never been a British WWE Champion and it's time for that to change. Cena is all "Well Wade, I don't know what you've done to earn a title shot, but if you want some, I'll see you in the main event." Barrett is seen getting a nice pep-talk from William Regal (who wrestles Daniel Bryan on the show) backstage to pop the crowd with another Regal sighting.

Barrett and Cena work a main event-style match, with it looking like Cena is about to retain with the Attitude Adjustment, but Barrett kicks out. His British ambition won't die! Barrett gets put in the STF but makes it to the ropes. Barrett even gets Cena in the Regal Stretch at one point and they try to work people into thinking that Cena might tap. He doesn't, but Barrett manages to flatten him out with The Bull Hammer and Barrett gets the clean pin to become the new WWE Champion in his home country.

SmackDown comes around (also taped in UK?) and Barrett says he wish he could say he became the first British WWE Champion in history for England, but he did it for himself. Barrett grew up fighting because of the rage and angst England put him through as he grew up, and he fought his way out. Barrett reveals that he played everyone because he knew that stupid British patriotism would kick-in if he wore the Union Jack on his tights and said a few pro-British things, and John Cena's connection with the audience was completely severed.

Basically -- Barrett plays the face role in England only to reveal that he used the fans to force John Cena to wrestle a type of match he couldn't win. Barrett mocks Cena for his redemption leading to only weeks as WWE Champion, but he is thankful that John Cena beat The Rock, because it always had to be Cena that Barrett beat. It was his redemption for letting Cena crush everything he worked towards as the leader of the Nexus two and a half years ago.

Barrett goes on to beat The Miz in a Champion vs. Champion Match when he goes after The Miz's legs and puts him in his own adopted Figure Four Leg Lock, forcing The Miz to tap-out. A clean victory over the IC Champion would bounce Barrett back from that loss and show how he is now on his game. The main event of Extreme Rules is Barrett defending the WWE Title against Cena, where Barrett either retains cleanly (well, as cleanly as one does in an Extreme Rules Match), or where he wins with the aid of a reformed Nexus -- David Otunga, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater and Michael McGillicutty.

It might seem a bit much to have two angry factions running around, what with The Shield still existing and everything, but the Nexus would be slightly different. It would be a group based around keeping Barrett champion. It would be reformed with the idea that they were always stronger together than separately, and now that they are a bit older and wiser, they are ready to take on the world. They don't make any official alliance with The Shield, but they seemingly don't want to fight another group, since that would be counter-productive, and The Shield don't want to fight the Nexus because they are outnumbered.
