Yesterday it was confirmed that Antonio Rogerio Nogueira was out of his co-main event bout against Mauricio Rua at UFC 161 on June 15th. Chael Sonnen went to Twitter later that evening to volunteer his services on short notice. According to Globo's Ivan Raupp, who originally reported Lil Nog's back injury, Sonnen will indeed be taking on Shogun in 12 days time:

Incredibly, Sonnen (27-13-1) almost became the LHW champion of the world in April against Jon Jones, but that's only because Jones broke his toe and would've lost had he not finished Chael in an otherwise lopsided 1st round. There was talk of Sonnen possibly fighting Wanderlei Silva next, but that appears to be off the table for now.

If this report is true, it very much changes the fight plan for Shogun, as Sonnen is one of the best MMA wrestlers in the UFC. Given Shogun's top 10 ranking, it could also be a potential path for Sonnen to eke into the top 10 (should he win, of course) and hang around as a perceived title contender at 205 lbs.

Don't like this fight for Chael on short notice. Would honestly prefer Wandy/Sonnen and I have no idea why Dana hasn't made that fight happen yet.

Crimson 06-03-2013 02:41 PM

Either way you gotta love Sonnen. That would be a helluva fight as well I hope it's true.

I'm sure that was in the works, pretty sure we'll see that fight as well.

MoFo 06-03-2013 03:10 PM

Yes!

Sonnen saves us from an awful ppv!

Kris P Lettus 06-04-2013 03:50 AM

Sonnen has built his career on fighting anyone at any time..

Love him or hate him, you have to respect him..

Son of a bitch!!!

Next Big Thing 06-04-2013 08:54 AM

Sucks, but to be honest, there's still some compelling fights on that PPV. I like Shields v. Woodley, Big Country is always good for a crushing knockout and Henderson/Evans has the potential to be fight of the night or very disappointing.

Impact! 06-04-2013 07:12 PM

Awful PPV, would be alright for a Fuel card though...

Kris P Lettus 06-04-2013 11:02 PM

Chael just said they are gonna fight at the Fox Sports 1 Boston card..

alvarado52 06-05-2013 01:46 AM

its quickly getting to the point where the free shows have a more solid lineup than PPV's.

Maybe Fitch is right in saying that the UFC needs to ditch PPV's and go free like other sports.

Kris P Lettus 06-05-2013 02:26 AM

They Fox cards are gonna all be big because of the exposure, this card is big because its kicking off a new channel.. PPVs are still better most cable events..

Crimson 06-05-2013 02:50 PM

Wasn't McMann vs. Kaufman added to that card as well? Really a good looking card

Kris P Lettus 06-05-2013 03:09 PM

McMahon vs Kauffman is set for ufc on fs1 2 : kampmann vs condit 2

Next Big Thing 06-05-2013 04:02 PM

The UFC needs to drop the numbering and just have a designated show name for these Fox shows like the WWE has for Raw and Smackdown. Shit gets confusing.

Yeah, but if the UFC wants to make a name as a legit sport of MMA, they need to make all events televised like the other sports.

The NFL doesnt make the Superbowl a PPV event, get what i'm saying?

The economics of combat sports is different from that of the NFL, which has a billion dollar television deal and hosts games every Sunday in 32 cities in stadiums that seat upwards of 60,000 and are usually sold out. Those other sports are able to negotiate television deals based on the dozens of markets they are in nightly during the television season. The NBA/MLB/NFL put on as many games in a month as the UFC does events in a year to a much wider audience so of course those tv deals would be more lucrative.

Operations like the UFC and the WWE are still reliant on PPV money and make more money from that than they do from television. That Super Bowl comparison is equivalent to asking the WWE why they won't make Wrestlemania free on USA. I'm sure if cable was a more lucrative route with that business model, the UFC/WWE/Boxing would go there.

alvarado52 06-05-2013 11:57 PM

dont you fuckin' sass me NBT

Next Big Thing 06-06-2013 12:08 AM

Awesome card

Cant wait

Next Big Thing 08-12-2013 05:00 PM

Didn't know Lauzon was on this card too. Nice.

DaveBrawl 08-12-2013 05:10 PM

Overeem? Curtis will be so excited.

Looks like a great card though.

Kris P Lettus 08-12-2013 05:11 PM

lauzon vs michael johnson

Johnson will prolly get choked out but it will be a good fight

Kris P Lettus 08-12-2013 05:13 PM

I like browne a lot but if reem comes in hungry, as he should, it will be a short night for travis

DaveBrawl 08-12-2013 05:18 PM

Want to see Faber, but I'm starting to get a little gunshy on him seeing as how everytime I check a card with him he loses via decision.

Kris P Lettus 08-12-2013 05:28 PM

Faber is still legit, he beat jorgenson via rnc in his last fight

Undercard is awesome too.. mcgregor, pickett, brandao, etc

And to clear up the ufc on fox sports 1 1 bs they have gone back to calling them fight nights.. officially, this is UFC UFN 26, which is awesome bc the last "fight night" they did was the one I went to, ultimate fight night 25: shields vs ellenberger

DaveBrawl 08-12-2013 05:38 PM

Oh no doubt he's still legit, just feel like a jinx for the dude in a way. If I forget about him on a card he chokes the guy out, if I look forward to it he goes down.

Kris P Lettus 08-12-2013 05:44 PM

He hasnt been the same since zuffa shut down the wec, but the again, his competition is much higher now

DaveBrawl 08-12-2013 05:51 PM

So true, but I love to watch the dude when he's on his game.

Kris P Lettus 08-12-2013 06:06 PM

Yeah he always is entertaining

Nah dude. I've got Brown winning via KO.

Love Reem as a personality and respect the hell out of his kickboxing, but dude has a suspect chin and I question how he will be moving forward now that he's off the juice, I mean "horse meat".

Kris P Lettus 08-12-2013 06:39 PM

I like Browne too and think he is a future contender but this will be prolly reems last shot at staying relevent in the hw division

Next Big Thing 08-12-2013 06:58 PM

If Reem loses this one and JDS loses to Cain as I expect, hopefully we get to see JDS beat the breaks off of Overeem before he's cut.

Corndad 08-12-2013 10:31 PM

Will find out if Hall was a one knock out wonder on TUF or if he's gonna be around a while

Kris P Lettus 08-12-2013 10:53 PM

He ko'ed like 4 people on tuf

Kris P Lettus 08-12-2013 10:56 PM

He also fought in bellator and was the ring of combat mw champ

His only loses are to kelvin at the tuf finale and early losses to costa phillipou and chris weidman

Dude will be around awhile

LMFAO

Around 34 mins into todays presser, when asked about his ability to take Shogun down, Chael went off defending Shoguns toughness while shooting about Lil Nog missing fights

He said "anytime Lil Nog or Vitor Bellfort signs a contract, I start a training camp"

He is golden every time he grabs the mic

The channel that now has UFC in the UK (BT Sports) finally got added to my TV package for free.

There was a huge stand-off between the providers, meaning I had to watch the last UFC event online (and I couldn't use legal streams either, due to the conditions of the rights deal).

Kris P Lettus 08-16-2013 12:05 AM

Yeah people in the UK will now have to pay for events but theyll come on at better times for yall and Dana promised a lot of extra content

Fox also cut a deal yesterday with Direct tv so this event will now be in 93 million homes

(The ppvs will still be much cheaper than we pay here in the states)

That with changing internet providers?

I fall into the category of Virgin Media customers who have all the BT Sport channels added for no extra charge, due to having the "XL Package".

Came to mississippi yesterday and went and watched the Saints game at my brothers last night, get back to my moms (out in the country-ish) and went to look for the fights just to get the channel etc

well, ComCast, not only had doesn't carry "Speed" but they acted like I was speaking German when I called and asked.. There are 3 "fox sports south" type channels but no Speed

So now I have to see if my buddy want to watch and go back over to his house (I crashed there last night) and crash there again tonight

if i had known this, I prolly would have stayed at home or stayed at my moms last night to watch the game, and gone into the city tonight to watch the fights

fucking bullshit

Next Big Thing 08-17-2013 05:50 PM

Jon Anik and Joe Rogan are doing the commentary on the prelims at least. Hopefully that continues on the main show. Hell, I wouldn't mind Rogan and Anik going forward.

Crimson 08-17-2013 10:23 PM

So Hall has been a huge letdown. Love watching Mike Brown fights.

Next Big Thing 08-17-2013 11:05 PM

I've always felt that Hall had a Mike Tyson effect in the house. Guys were psyching themselves out of fighting him before it began. Outside of it, he's another guy who is talented, but far from a guaranteed contender.

Next Big Thing 08-17-2013 11:06 PM

Really just tuning in for the Overeem/ Browne match up. I've been hot and cold about Shogun versus Sonnen.

Next Big Thing 08-17-2013 11:16 PM

Reem's glass jaw is his achilles heel.

Next Big Thing 08-17-2013 11:50 PM

Gotta love Chael. If he was a better fighter, he'd be one of the biggest draws in combat sports.

Crimson 08-18-2013 12:02 AM

Gold on the mic. I wana read exactly what he said

amazing night of fights

random thoughts:

brad picket is tough as nails but mcdonald is fn legit

mcgregor is entertaining

michael johnson looked outstanding and made lauzon look amateur

matt brown is prolly the most underrated fighter in mma today

travis brown with the silva/machida front kick made me mark out so hard, though reem was gonna finish around 2 minutes in

chael is amazing, his submission was only outshined by his post fight promo

loved when he was taking shots at rogan

amazing card top to bottom

Dana White said during the post fight scrum that "Uriah Hall is not a fighter"

DaveBrawl 08-18-2013 02:41 PM

Glad to see Faber straight up rocking last night. When it first started I was like "man I really am jinxing this guy" the he turned it on and went to work.

That Hall-John Howard fight was just wierd from the constant respect taps, especially at the end, to the spinning wheel kick/ground superman punch right at the bell. Especially since when he first landed after grazing Hall's head I thought the two of them started making out at the horn until they changed the camera shot.

Corndad 08-18-2013 03:03 PM

Kinda like I figured Hall is gonna be a few KO on TUF wonder. Guy just doesn't have it right now.

Kris P Lettus 08-18-2013 03:57 PM

As Dana said, you put Brad Picketts brain in Uriah Halls body and he would be GOAT

Hall lacks the killer instinct but has all the physical tools in the world

they should have put mcgregor/halloway on the main card

Kris P Lettus 08-18-2013 04:08 PM

Maybe they give Brown a shot at Ben Askren when he comes over

I would love that because no way Brown lets dude wrestle fuck him for 15 minutes
