Darren Young comes out

This was in the 100,000 replies thread, but honestly it deserves its own thread. Someone came out in an industry that still has homophobic stigma even in 2013. This is big news, and good on Darren for feeling comfortable enough to come out.

I do hope WWE don't turn this into a storyline. But, I've long thought the PTP would work as a face team and I think that might to start going in motion now.

http://www.tmz.com/2013/08/15/darren...superstar-gay/

WWE superstar Darren Young just dropped a bombshell, telling TMZ, he's gay ... and no, this isn't part of the act.

Darren was at LAX Wednesday when we asked whether a gay wrestler could succeed in WWE, and Darren laughed, saying, "Absolutely. Look at me. I'm a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I'll tell you right now, I'm gay. And I'm happy. I'm very happy."

For the record, Darren is now the first openly gay wrestler ever at WWE ... and the first headlining wrestler ever to come out while still signed to a major promotion.

Other pro wrestlers have been rumored to be gay, but that's it ... just rumors.

Bottom line: this is big, big news. For all its chauvinism and testosterone-driven bravado, coming out in WWE is tantamount to coming out in the NFL.

Of course, wrestling is a little different, particularly because of how physical it is, and how little clothing is involved -- but Darren is completely unfazed. Watch the video to hear why.

Shadrick 08-15-2013 07:32 AM

Well Pat Patterson is open if you want to count him. Obviously he's not on that active roster, but if I recall he was openly gay during his career.

Regardless, thats dope of him. I imagine it takes a lot of courage to do something like that, especially in that type of business. Good on him, I support him, and it by no means affects my feelings on his hilarious shenanigans with PTP.

ron the dial 08-15-2013 08:11 AM

good for him. glad he felt comfortable enough to do that. but you can rest assured he will be saddled with a gay gimmick now.

Savio 08-15-2013 08:41 AM

OJ was openly bi in the WWE too, yeah ok bi =/= gay but its halfway close.

Savio 08-15-2013 08:42 AM

He will probably get a push now.

Frank Drebin 08-15-2013 08:47 AM

This isn't legit until Ryan Clark reports on it. Can't wait to see the link on the bottom.

Darren Young full taint pics at coming out party!!!!! Woah!!!!

voncouch 08-15-2013 09:01 AM

Pat Patterson is openly gay, but when he was an active member of the roster, I don't think it was known to the fans. But either way, big respect to Darren Young. It can't be easy to come out in this business where homosexuals are somehow seen as less manly than heterosexuals. Being black is enough to stereotype you in professional wrestling (Crime Tyme, Shelton's mama). Being gay is just a double whammy. Let's just hope HHH doesn't make some bad joke at his expense, like when he compared Lillian Garcia to a horse.

VSG 08-15-2013 09:09 AM

Good for him.

The Rogerer 08-15-2013 09:21 AM

Good for you Father

Wake Up Call 08-15-2013 09:40 AM

Well there you have it, they were looking for a black American to push, now they can one up it, a black Gay American.

Zeb should cut an amazing promo using this as his material.

I don't understand how a guy can be gay, who in their right mind doesn't like titties? Anyway, good for him.

Shadrick 08-15-2013 09:43 AM

Savior is my jesus.

Savio 08-15-2013 09:44 AM

he said Gay and happy though.

Shadrick 08-15-2013 09:51 AM

Yeah, I watched the video again and saw his conviction. This is definitely him coming out.

Good for him.

Corporate CockSnogger 08-15-2013 09:55 AM

Sweet. YMCA Gimmick. The "YOUNG MAN!" opening fits too. Book it WWE.

The Condor 08-15-2013 10:14 AM

Good for him. I'm sure a lot of people are waiting for the Hulkster to release a grainy video of him and Brutus Beefcake from the early 90's to prove he was covering this ground years ago.

glanville6 08-15-2013 10:27 AM

My friend said instead of being just a jobber, he is a "blowjobber."

Good for him though. I'm sure it isn't easy.

Ultra Mantis 08-15-2013 10:59 AM

Glad he's happy and doesn't have to hide who he is. Still think he's awful though.

Theo Dious 08-15-2013 11:22 AM

I care about this slightly less than I care about his Coke vs Pepsi preference.

Shisen Kopf 08-15-2013 11:39 AM

I wonder what the Ultimate Warrior thinks about this?

Volare 08-15-2013 12:02 PM

He really is the Bizarro Cena isn't he? His boyfriend will look like Nikki Bella somehow... :shifty:

MoFo 08-15-2013 12:12 PM

Cody will be next.

Afterlife 08-15-2013 12:13 PM

This made me very happy to hear.

Emperor Smeat 08-15-2013 12:13 PM

Good for him that he was comfortable enough to make the announcement.

Mr Burns 08-15-2013 12:15 PM

Chris Kanyon would be proud!

Hasn't Orlando Jordan been openly gay for quite some time? Fairly certain he got into trouble for bringing like 17 year old boys on the road with him or something.

Wow, I'm pretty surprised. I really hope he doesn't get stuck with a terrible gay storyline/gimmick.

Poit 08-15-2013 12:54 PM

Heh, WWE's already released a statement.

http://www.wwe.com/inside/wwe-releas...young-26140515

Apparently, they're going to be using him in the Be A Star campaign. Makes sense.

whiteyford 08-15-2013 12:58 PM

Good for him, I don't really care either way and I hope that it doesn't hinder his career but I'll forget all about this in a day or two.

Nark Order 08-15-2013 01:01 PM

When Orlando Jordan was openly gay/bi everyone just seemed to see it as kind of gross and it seemed to be part of the reason for him leaving. Now that gay is more newsworthy and relevant, all of a sudden it's a celebration.

Step in the right direction but a little transparent IMO.

Innovator 08-15-2013 01:02 PM

I eagerly await Darren Young's new "Man's Man" gimmick

Wake Up Call 08-15-2013 01:13 PM

I just hope they don't shove him in our face.

What I would do is have Titus turn on him, and be an anti-gay heel. He would be over in less than a month.

Darren Young has never weirded anyone out, and something tells me he never will. Orlando Jordan makes people uncomfortable. This was a wrestling segment, not a scene from something on the Out! channel.

Well, his TNA persona was way over the top. I was talking about his WWE run and I don't think he did anything close to that then.

Nark Order 08-15-2013 01:39 PM

And who cares, anyhow? Heterosexuality is thrown in people's faces on a daily basis in every tv show, movie, book, and advertisement in existence.

Honestly I don't see them turning this into an angle, rather I just see them pushing him as the face of the Be a Star thing. The way to present this is exactly the way he went about it in the interview: "Yeah, I'm gay. Big deal. Got any chips?"

Been thinking, and this is the smartest thing Young has ever done. He bought himself at least a couple years of being employed by WWE, imagine the bad press they would get if they fired the first openly active gay wrestler in the company.

Smart smart man.

Yeah, that would be like the Christopher Street Connection from Jersey All Pro Wrestling. As a current near-jobber, Young really has nothing to lose by coming out. I'm sure WWE will assign him more BE A STAR promotional work, if not more ring victories.

In all fairness, chances are he had a number of threesomes where Tamina was smoking two sausages at once and then being double parked in the same parking stall.

Awesome.

Shadrick 08-16-2013 03:18 AM

On another note, its really awesome to see that a lot of TPWW is so positive with regards to this news. I mean that sincerely. I'm an extremely tolerant guy and I run into dickheads who are so arrogant with their opinions about homosexuality (you're not a dickhead because you disagree; you're a dickhead because your opinion is based off of antiquated views or religious babble).

I <3 you guys.

Tom Guycott 08-16-2013 03:44 AM

Well, nice to see that Darren Young is taking one for the te... uh, throwing himself on a swor... becoming a martyr (good, that won't work as an unintentional pun) so that they don't have to publicize anyone more "vital".

I mean, I'm sure there is belief that it's so much nicer for WWE that they can throw their "token gay guy" chips behind a tag team jobber for this pub instead of somone making a huge deal about it in the middle of the next time they decide to push Ryback and hoping it doesn't hurt buyrates. Pretty sure there still has to be some brass in WWE and/or sponsors who still do give a crap about such a non-issue.

DAMN iNATOR 08-16-2013 07:39 AM

I just think the whole thing is weird. I mean... do you think Darren Young told the camera guy, or the camera guy was already his buddy to ask that question? Seems like a goofy question, but a good way of making it a story.

I think Vince is genuine in his response. If he's worked with Pat Patterson for this long, I don't think he's spending too much time dwelling on Darren Young. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if he legit didn't give a shit.

His revelation to the TMZ guy was kind of strange though. It would be kind of messed up if Darren Young was just fucking around with him and ended up having to go with it b/c of the response he got.
