Michael Douglas will play Hank Pym.

Paul Rudd will play Scott Lang.

This is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 3 which is set to include Captain America 3 (pretty much confirmed), Thor 3 (confirmed), Dr. Strange (extremely likely), Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Season 3 (unconfirmed), and ultimately Avengers 3 (confirmed).

Corporate CockSnogger 01-13-2014 04:40 PM

Is Antman actually any good? Seems like a pretty shite guy to have around when you've got Hulk, Thor etc. Captain America seemed lame enough compared to them, can't see how a guy who can shrink will be anything other than comic relief.

Kalyx triaD 01-13-2014 04:46 PM

Ant-Man, and also The Atom on the DC side, have proved on several occasions to be very useful. I mean I get you, I think size changing is just stupid and I never liked it as a superhero concept - but the comics do present them as useful and even formidable on occasion.

Kalyx triaD 01-13-2014 04:54 PM

Surely they'll have flashbacks of him doing Ant-Man things, maybe he was involved with the original SHIELD as well (likely met Howard Stark too). But the younger guy with a habit of elaborate heists is just more 'Hollywood', really.

Corporate CockSnogger 01-13-2014 04:54 PM

I guess he could make himself really small, climb into Loki's mouth and then make himself big again and explode Loki from the inside.

Lock Jaw 01-13-2014 04:59 PM

Maybe we can have flashbacks of Michael Douglas Ant-Man running around on a team with Peggy Carter.

Kalyx triaD 01-13-2014 05:03 PM

Which would be A-OK if/when Peggy's show gets off the ground.

JimmyMess 01-13-2014 07:55 PM

as in the mcmuffin commercial..... WHAAAAAAAAAT?

This will be cool I think.

Hanso Amore 01-13-2014 10:46 PM

The name alone will be an issue with the mainstream. And sure he can be useful, but phase three in a battle with thanos is a bit late in the game to bring him in as any real interesting addition.

IMHO

If this came out last year it would be perfect.

dronepool 01-13-2014 10:52 PM

Cool.

How is Phase 3 late in the game? By that logic you're saying not to introduce any new characters in Phase 3 and just have sequels. Do you like Dr. Strange at all?

Lock Jaw 01-13-2014 11:41 PM

Thinking about this now, I like the idea of a "legacy hero" movie. It is something we haven't really seen yet.

You'd think DC would be all about "legacy hero" movies, since they have/had so many legacy heroes. They should make a Starman movie/movies.

He's talking about the escalation of the threat the Avengers face, and how Ant-man compares to that threat. He's not talking about new characters in general.

That said, I've read Avengers for years, and Ant-man has been useful plenty of times.

That video that was released a while ago also showed how good the character could be in combat.

GD 01-14-2014 03:40 AM

I am glad that Edgar Wright is directing the movie. I am also glad that Paul Rudd is going to be Ant-Man as he is one of my favourite actors of all time.

My knowledge about Ant-Man is limited to The Ultimates series (Hank Pym when he was married to the Wasp).

Miotch 01-14-2014 02:58 PM

You have quote the low bar for favorite actor of all time.

You get me. This is correct. I wasa few drinks in and not as eloquent as you.

I just think to a mass-casual audience the escalation and addition of "space Aliens" and other worldly gods and people with the most amazing super powers, Ant Man will not really stand out or make sense.

Instead if like Antman was around in the first film and still be around in the 3rd Avengers it would fit better than bringing him into his own film then showing up in Avengers 3.

Have no reason to think the film makers will flub it, but I have that concern with this character transitioning to the masses.

Was telling my wife about it and all she could come back with was "why antman how stupid, couldnt the hulk just smush him?"

Meant quite not quote.

JimmyMess 01-14-2014 08:11 PM

Will they do what they did for X Men and make Douggylas look young in flashbacks?

Maybe it will be in the vein of Watchmen in the style of half the movie takes place with shit thats already happened?

Kalyx triaD 02-05-2014 08:24 PM

Evangeline Lilly Cast as Ant-Man's Female Lead.

Whether she's the MCU's version of Jan/Wasp is not revealed but... prepare for something like that is all I'm saying.

alvarado52 02-05-2014 10:10 PM

Well Evangeline Lilly is one of my Hollywood hard-ons, so Im okay with his.

Fignuts 02-06-2014 02:04 AM

Think she'd make a great wasp. Besides her, really the only other female characters connected to Pym are Tigra and Jocasta.

Kalyx triaD 06-23-2014 02:09 AM

There's a good chance Yellowjacket will be retrofit as the villain.

GD 06-23-2014 02:11 AM

Edgar Wright is out. Fuck this gay shit!

Sepholio 06-23-2014 02:40 AM

LOL Ant-Man.

Am I the only one that pictures this movie bombing?

Drakul 06-23-2014 03:52 AM

Nope.

I can see the media outlets calling it the superhero movie that burst the genres bubble. The Green Lantern had the mainstream rolling its eyes and I heard "Now they're really scraping the barrel!" when it was being discussed on tv. A serious action movie called Antman will probably get the same reaction or worse.

Kalyx triaD 06-23-2014 04:18 AM

Green Lantern didn't suck because they were scraping the barrel (and who says that, GL is hella popular), that movie sucked because it sucked as a movie.

I guess yet again we have to bring up the Iron Man example of how a good movie can turn a lesser known hero into something big. The best movie arguably in the MCU is Cap 2, and NOBODY thought that would be the case after Avengers and IM3.

Drakul 06-23-2014 04:24 AM

Just thought, it MIGHT have been Green Hornet.

Fignuts 06-23-2014 06:40 AM

Also, Paul Rudd is Ant Man. I highly doubt they are going to take it that seriously.

Honestly, if they can make gaurdians of the galaxy work, they can make ant man work.

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
Also John Slattery is in there, we may remember him as 'old' Howard Stark from Iron Man 2.

Love me some Paul Rudd.

Kalyx triaD 08-21-2014 03:43 PM

Evangeline Lilly's character (Janet Van Dye's daughter), is essentially the MCU's Janet proper. So while it won't be in the origin story, she is totally our Wasp.

Lock Jaw 08-21-2014 03:47 PM

You say this solely based on those pics that came out showing her haircut?

Kalyx triaD 08-21-2014 03:56 PM

I've had my thoughts about it the moment she was cast, no way Marvel would get her to be 'the girlfriend'. With classic Janet dead by the start of the movie, I figure they'd work around that by making the daughter Wasp herself, while the classic Hank and Jan adventures would be seen in Agent Carter's series. Just musing to myself.

Then the haircut came out, and I'm about certain now.

Shadow 08-23-2014 12:48 AM

I'm....not totally happy with this but I'm not going to bitch as the track record the MCU has with making female characters awesome is more hits then misses. So while we won't have Jan, I'm glad we've got a Wasp.

Fignuts 08-23-2014 01:42 AM

Yeah, as a fan I'm pretty okay with this. In fact I think I'd be bothered more if it was Janet, and they made her Lang's girlfriend. Think it's more important to acknowledge the Hank/Janet relationship than to have Janet in the costume.

Kalyx triaD 11-03-2014 08:10 PM

Agent Carter will appear in this. I'm guessing it has something to do with remixing Hank Pym as a SHIELD founder/scientist.

Because I thought, Well, if it’s because Marvel are big bullies, and they just want a puppet and not someone with a vision, I’m not interested in being in this movie. Which is what I was afraid of.

I finally got the script literally the day before I was supposed to go in for fittings…I saw with my own eyes that Marvel had just pulled the script into their world. I mean, they’ve established a universe, and everyone has come to expect a certain aesthetic [and] a certain feel for Marvel films. And what Edgar was creating was much more in the Edgar Wright camp of films. They were very different. And I feel like, if [Marvel] had created Edgar’s incredible vision — which would have been, like, classic comic book — it would have been such a riot to film [and] it would have been so much fun to watch. [But] it wouldn’t have fit in the Marvel Universe. It would have stuck out like a sore thumb, no matter how good it was. It just would have taken you away from this cohesive universe they’re trying to create. And therefore it ruins the suspended disbelief that they’ve built.

I suspected that he left because his vision was outdated with the MCU style and world building since he started so long ago.

They most certainly had to address that name, I suppose.

Fignuts 01-06-2015 10:59 PM

Wait, so who is the villain in this. Really drawing a blank as far as Ant-Man villains go. And I'm a Marvel guy.

Disturbed316 01-06-2015 11:14 PM

Don't know much about the Ant-Man character and story but will probably go see this, looks like it could be good.

Kalyx triaD 01-06-2015 11:51 PM

Yellow Jacket is the villain, or at least the muscle.

Lock Jaw 01-06-2015 11:53 PM

The villain is HIMSELF

Helmsphere 01-07-2015 02:18 AM

Was the whole, is it too late to change the name a forecoming of him possibly becoming Giant Man in the movie?

Kalyx triaD 01-07-2015 04:07 AM

Doubtful. The gag was pointing out how silly Ant-Man sounds. Giant Man wouldn't be a great deal better to Scott. I don't think they're the Giant Man route quite yet anyway.

Rammsteinmad 01-07-2015 04:08 AM

To be honest, Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Goliath whoever else has never appealed to me unless part of a team story-arc. That teaser hasn't done much to excite me, but it looks good for Paul Rudd, who could really break out into more serious roles if this does well.

Kalyx triaD 01-07-2015 04:19 AM

Yeah the shrink/grow think never stuck to me as a superhero thing. I feel the same about stretchy types.

I cannot wait for more.

Wonder if they'll do a last minute Giant Man thing at the end of the movie when Yellowjacket et al kidnap Cassie

That aside other than the producer and writers yeah the track records of the guys who worked on this film...its worrying.

Paul Rudd helped with the screen play.......alright

JimmyMess 01-08-2015 07:28 PM

Has modern marvel had a real dud yet? I suppose they are about due... not hating on this film before I've seen it though.

alvarado52 01-08-2015 10:39 PM

My issue with Ant-Man in general is that, I find the character more interesting as supporting.

Shadow 01-09-2015 04:21 PM

Hence why they went with Scott Lang instead of Hank Prym. Easier to sell a single dad then a wife beater.

I do think that people are right, this will be Marvel's first "flop", it's not going to be a flop in the terms people are thinking. It'll do good money just not Guardians of the Galaxy money. Probably Iron Man 2 money or even Ed Norton Hulk money.

I'm glad to see them embrace the inherent insanity of a hero the size of an ant. The first 2/3 of the trailer made me a little nervous that we were going to see Origin Story #8549176320. But that one gag renewed my faith. I should have known better than to doubt Marvel Studios.
