Batman: Arkham Knight

Game Informer dropped the covers for the April issue. Rocksteady is supposedly handling the game, and................................WE FINALLY GET THE BATMOBILE!

Last but not least, it's the series finale.

Kevin Conroy already let slip he was working on this months ago.

Too fucking excited.

Rocksteady states the game won't have any online multiplayer features due to them wanting to focus entirely on the game's story, not having enough time to do both, and Warner Bros not pressuring them to shoe-horn it in for the sake of having one.

Kalyx triaD 03-04-2014 06:29 PM

So no Dynamic Duo challenge modes? That's three games in a row. Just gonna let it go.

VSG 03-04-2014 06:43 PM

I really hope Harley doesn't show up as Day 1 DLC though. But I gotta admit she looks goood in this :naughty:

JimmyMess 03-04-2014 07:06 PM

She's a preorder bonus I guess

ClockShot 03-04-2014 07:11 PM

Fuck multiplayer. Have them take all the time in the world with the story. If they're gonna ride off into the sunset, make this the best game of the bunch.

Kalyx triaD 03-04-2014 07:48 PM

I would not mind Day 1 DLC, Harley or otherwise.

"A new villain, Arkham Knight, made specifically for the Arkham universe by Geoff Johns, will be introduced in the game.[3]"

Yeah. Scarecrow I think was M.I.A. in Arkham City.

Clock King wouldn't be so bad. Maybe some sort of beat the clock challenge Zaszz had in Arkham City.

ClockShot 03-05-2014 07:57 AM

playstationtrophies.org (one of my go-to gaming sites), got their hands on and chunk of info for this game. I'm assuming it's from the Game Informer article. In spoilers.

SPOILER: show
Batman: Arkham Knight was announced yesterday; a retailer leak breaking the news shortly before an official announcement trailer appeared. This was quickly followed by the release of Game Informer’s heavily Batman-focused issue, and a GameStop pre-order poster which seems to reveal the game’s release date.
Here’s everything we know so far.
Developer
Batman: Arkham Knight is developed by Rocksteady, the series creators. It marks the return of the British studio following last year’s prequel Batman: Arkham Origins, which was developed by Warner Bros. Montreal.
The studio says it is moving on to other things following the release of Arkham Knight which are “most definitely not Batman related.”
Story
While we don’t know too many specifics about the story itself, we do know that Batman: Arkham Asylum is the “explosive finale to the Arkham series”, taking place one year after the events of Arkham City.
Other story info includes the revelation that now the is Joker gone, Gotham’s other key villains have colluded to plot Batman's downfall. In order to spread the dark knight’s resources thin, each villain has his or her own mission in the city.
According to the game director, the ending of the series has been planned out for some time.
"We knew where we wanted it to go," Hill told Game Informer. "We don't work on multiple titles at the same time. We just work on the one game, and we want it to be the single best thing. We make it like it's the last game we'll ever get to make."
"And it felt like the right way to end the story. I felt like it brought the arcs from first and second game, from Asylum and City, to a close. It felt like the natural fit really. We've been doing Batman games for a long while now. We wanted to put everything into this one and really close the trilogy with a bang.”
Gotham City
Batman: Arkham Knight takes place in a new central zone of Gotham City, roughly five times the size of Arkham City. It is split into three islands. And while the scale is obviously impressive, Rocksteady’s aim isn’t to make the biggest world, but the richest, densest and most vibrant.
Only criminals remain in Gotham. Scarecrow has threatened to detonate bombs and cover the city in a new version of his fear toxin, so it has been evacuated.
The layout of the city has been created to accommodate the Batmobile (see “Batmobile”), while ramps, barriers and traffic have been used to provide additional hazards.
Additionally the buildings in the city are more spread out than in the previous game. "Arkham City was quite claustrophobic," game director Sefton Hill told Game Informer. "Here we have a lot more negative space between the buildings so it’s much easier and more enjoyable to glide around."
Enemies
Though far more will no doubt be revealed in the weeks to come, including confirmation of a since-removed Facebook tease that Hush will play a role, here’s what we know about Arkham Knight’s bad dudes so far.
The official announcement for the game says, “Batman faces the ultimate threat against the city he is sworn to protect. The Scarecrow returns to unite an impressive roster of super villains, including Penguin, Two-Face and Harley Quinn, to destroy The Dark Knight forever.”
There’s another character too. "Arkham Knight" is also the name of a new arch-rival, created from scratch by DC Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns. The character will "really challenge Batman to go head to head with him in lots of different ways.”
It would seem the demo played by Game Informer ends with the player’s first encounter with this character. He is described as a "militaristic Batman" with what looks like an "Arkham A" on his chest. Apparently, he shoots Batman and the screen fades to black.
Beyond that, Gotham is also crawling with criminals, reportedly four or five times the amount featured in Arkham City. Riots will occasionally break out featuring up to 50 characters smashing up the city.
Allies
Jim Gordon plays a role, although his police force is overwhelmed with criminals. He believes that his daughter Barbara - also known as Oracle - is gone. She isn’t, however, she’s helping Batman. Arkham City follows the comic continuity in that Barbara has been paralysed by the Joker.
Unlike in Rocksteady’s other games, Oracle will be a physical presence, rather than just a guiding voice in Batman’s ear. She knows Batman’s real identity and is employed by the writers to show the dark knight’s more human side.
Voice actors
Kevin Conroy - Batman
Nolan North - Penguin
Wally Wingert - Riddler
Tara Strong - Harley Quinn
Troy Baker - Two-Face.
Graphics and Tech Stuff
Batman: Arkham Knight is built on what Rocksteady calls a "juiced up" version of a custom Unreal Engine, in order to take advantage of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4’s capabilities. Rocksteady describes Arkham Knight as "a real, genuine next-gen game.”
All of the game's cutscenes take place in-engine and are no pre-rendered cinematics. Rocksteady says they are seamlessly integrated into the action, meaning the shift from gameplay to cut-scene is unobtrusive. Similarly, unlike previous Arkham games, there are no loading screens between interior and exterior environments.
Loading screens have been eradicated for switching between interiors and exteriors, and at any given time there are "three or four times as many" thugs active in Gotham City compared to the previous game.
There’s also this astounding quote from lead character artist Albert Feliu. He told Game Informer that one character in Arkham Knight has more polygons than the entirety of Arkham Asylum.
”At the beginning, we started making characters that were about three to four times the polygon count and texture sizes of Arkham City,” he said. "As we kept going with every character we just pushed it more. It's the kind of thing that sounds insane. Like one character is as big as the polygon count of Arkham Asylum, the whole environment."
Special cloth physics have also been implemented, so that Batman’s cape and Gordon’s trench coat react realistically to wind and movement. You can even see raindrops running down them.
Multiplayer
There is no multiplayer in Arkham Knight. Rocksteady is focused on "making the best single-player experience it can.” The studio doesn’t feel Arkham Knight and needs multiplayer.
Batmobile
Rocksteady wants the Batmobile to be "the best car in any game ever.” According to the studio it takes up around 160mb of memory. There are hundreds of thousands of polygons, as well as textures and shaders used to make it look impressive.
Indeed, Rocksteady says that the Batmobile is so detailed that it wouldn’t fit on an Xbox 360, presumably meaning that it is made up of so much information that you can’t fit it on a DVD.
The only vehicle that Batman has access to in the game, the Batmobile zooms to your location with the press of a button. It can jumps, boost, do burnouts and "rotate in a circle at a full stop to get you pointed in the right direction.”
It’s also bulletproof and can smash through barricades, trees and building corners, plus it can missile lock and fire an immobilizer at enemy vehicles. Perhaps unsurprisingly, enemies will try and get out of the way if they see it coming.
If Batman approaches a key point in the Batmobile, he can launch himself out of it into a fast glide.
In the demo played by GameInformer, the Riddler challenges Batman to a three-lap time trial through the underground tunnels of Gotham. According to the write-up, the only way to make it through is to use a special radar pulse that moves obstacles on the track.
Gameplay
Batman begins the game with his traditional Arkham City suit, but upgrades to a darker, plated one later on, gaining new abilities in the process. The new suit has been designed to complement the look of the Batmobile.
The controls have been streamlined somewhat with the introduction of a new move, allowing Batman to sprint to the nearest ledge and dive straight down.
The Grapnel Gun now has a Mark 2 boost upgrade and can be used to slingshot Batman into the air, while the Line launcher can provide Batman with perch points. The Line Launcher can also create ziplines while Batman is flying around. Similarly, all quickfire gadgets can be used in mid-air.
While Rocksteady believes that the simplicity of the combat and the counter system is the key to its success, some new features have been introduced. For example, a well-timed backflip can instantly KO charging enemies. Quick and full ground strikes are available, the latter allowing takedowns but taking longer to pull off.
Beyond this, environmental elements have been introduced to combat. For example, you can throw enemies into power generators.
Double damage can be dealt by pulling off a throw counter that grabs enemies and launches them into another. "Fear Takedowns" can also be used on groups of three enemies, just as long as they're close together and unaware of Batman’s presence.
Platforms
Concentrating on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 only has allowed Rocksteady to make “a real, genuine next-gen game,” Sefton Hill told Game Informer.
"It's not a challenge to move to next-gen. The real challenge is making sure you’re getting the best out of the machines. It’s easy to get the game running, but it's about, ‘What can we do that really pushes those machines?’
“Obviously you see a lot of games that are cross-gen, and they feel a bit reined in because of that. Because we were able to make that decision quite early, we were able to be more ambitious with the design and make a real, genuine next-gen game.”
Pre-Order Bonus
Pre-orders of Batman: Arkham Knight allow players to play as Harley Quinn, gain access to four exclusive challenge maps and “utilize her unique weapons, gadgets and abilities.” This information comes from the promotional material below.
Release Date
This was spotted on a GameStop pre-order poster. It says the game is coming to North America on October 14th. Placeholder dates are often used on retailer websites, but because this is on promotional material, it is likely legitimate. You can see the poster below.

He was in City as part of the one of the sidequests. It was kind of left hanging as well, would be weird if they don't pick it up in this game.

Man-Bat is about the only biggish villain other than The Ventriloquist that they haven't really touched for the series (other than the little appearances by Scarface), so I really have to wonder if they're going to get any fresh faces in. Suppose they could go for some wider DC universe villains like they did with Deathstroke and Deadshot, but who knows.

Kalyx triaD 03-05-2014 06:18 PM

I love that Rocksteady considers their games a trilogy and barely mentions Origins, unless they wanna mention how much bigger their Gotham is than theirs.

This is what sold me on it, I was kind of on the fence for the next gen platforms figuring I'd get the Xbox one eventually as I hadn't been playing much of my 360 in the last 6 months, but this settled it.

For some reason I feel like he's going to end up being the Joker.

VSG 03-28-2014 10:30 AM

Recent blurbs said Gotham is dealing with the "supposed" death of The Joker. I really hope they don't bring him back though.

The Arkham Knight has been created with DC so I still am optimistic about it. If anything he looks like Red Hood to me.

DaveBrawl 03-28-2014 11:23 AM

Yeah I saw someone else speculate it could be Red Hood, but that doesn't make sense to me really. I mean he already went through his whole ordeal in the comics and if this guy is going to be a comic character that doesn't mesh to me. I guess that could be applied to Joker too though.

I do agree in that I hope the Joker stays dead in this too.

Damian Rey 03-28-2014 12:11 PM

Looks like a sweet variant for a Batman Beyond suit. I like it. Hope Joker is dead too. I don't want anything other than maybe some flashbacks.

Kalyx triaD 03-29-2014 04:48 AM

I still have my theory on who the Knight is, but it may a major spoiler if correct. I think I'm dead-on, though.

Fignuts 03-29-2014 05:21 AM

Thought it was supposed to be a completely new character, not an old one in disguise.

Would be cool if there were other DC villains in this. Asylum to City had a pretty large amount of new villains. Since they had to add people like fucking Bird in Origins, I'd think they might want to think outside the box for a new game.

Kalyx triaD 03-29-2014 05:22 AM

He is a new character, according to my theory, and not an old one.

Fignuts 03-29-2014 05:29 AM

Frank Miller?

I guess we'll know if there are a bunch of whores in the game.

Good and bad news from Warner Bros.

The good news was some details regarding the Batmobile:

Quote:

The latest video from Rocksteady not only reveals the bad news, but it shows off the various improvements that have come to the Batmobile. They include a Riot Gun, Missile Barrage, Vulcan mini-gun, and a 60 mm tank cannon!

Additionally the Batmobile can be remote controlled, for sneak attacks on enemies or puzzle solving using some of the built-in tools like its trusty grappling hook.
The bad news being the game got delayed till TBA 2015.

So it’s going to come out next January, but I know everyone is frustrated,” Conroy told Groovey.TV (via NeoGAF) at the Denver Comic-Con (below at around the five minute mark). “The reason it’s been delayed is because it’s so awesome.”

drave 04-28-2015 07:09 AM

By the time I finish Witcher, maybe Batman will have some deals or something.

Initially it was between Witcher and Elder Scrolls Online.

Season Pass for the game is gonna set you back $40. Or free if you grab the premium edition of the game.

Pretty pricey if you ask me. Rocksteady better have ALOT of content out to make it worth that price.

So Batgirl will be playable in the DLC.

From the Batman Arkham Facebook page:

Quote:

Earlier this week, we announced the Season Pass for Batman: Arkham Knight. While the story of Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham Trilogy will come to a close on June 23rd, we are excited to continue telling stories and delivering more content to explore and play through in the 6 months following the game’s release. We’ll be building more narrative, more missions, more challenges and more characters and vehicles that we want players to experience, even though they didn’t fit into the storyline of Batman: Arkham Knight.

We’ve heard from our community that you want more information on what we’ll be delivering in the Season Pass. While we aren’t ready to unveil every aspect of the content we’ll be developing, we would like to share more detail now to give you a better sense of the scope of the Season Pass.

Batgirl: A Matter of Family
An all new prequel story expansion in an entirely new location where you play as Batgirl for the very first time in the Arkham series - check out the first render of Batgirl.

The Season of Infamy
Play as Batman in all new story missions featuring legendary super-villains invading Gotham City, with new story arcs, missions and gameplay features.

Gotham City Stories

Play as Batman’s key allies in narrative missions extending their storylines, from both before and after the events in Batman: Arkham Knight.

Legendary Batmobiles with Themed Tracks
Drive the most iconic Batmobiles from Batman’s 75-year history, on custom-built race tracks, each themed to that Batmobile’s specific era. Every Batmobile will be drivable across every race track.

Crimefighter Challenge Maps
Engage in a series of new challenge maps utilizing the unique play styles of Batman and his allies.

Character Skins
A variety of skins from across the eras for Batman, Robin, Nightwing and Catwoman.

As we fully ramp up development on the Season Pass, we will be sharing even more details on each monthly content drop. We hope you enjoy playing Batman: Arkham Knight as much as we’ve enjoyed making it.

WB Games

Only ever bought two season passes in the past (The Walking Dead/Lego Batman 3), will most likely get this one too, especially if the new story missions add a good amount of extra gameplay time.

Fignuts 05-03-2015 01:19 AM

That does sound like a shitload of content. I'll probably get it.

Still have to play through Arkham City. Fucking Witcher 3 and ESO coming out in the same timeframe.

And it's fucking summer which means I'm out more.

Fuckin' white people problems yo

Disturbed316 05-03-2015 01:34 AM

Have the same problem but backwards. The traditional 'Summer games drought' is right when the cold weather hits, so got loads of times but nothing to play. Then, all the big games come out towards the end of the year when it's summer here, no time to sit around in doors when it's 25 degrees outside.

ClockShot 05-03-2015 07:51 AM

As long as skins from The Animated Series make their way onto Batman (like in Arkham City), and the Batmobile, I'm good.

drave 05-03-2015 07:55 AM

Really like that render of Batgirl. One of the better ones I feel.

Rocksteady revealed some details regarding the Dual Play feature for the game.

Quote:

It's been known for a while that Batman: Arkham Knight would feature a teamfighting mechanic of some sort called "Dual Play," but thanks to this official video we have a little more insight into how it works. Basically, you can switch between characters at will, with the AI controller the other combatant -- pretty simple, but effective stuff ... Catwoman, Nightwing, and Robin are confirmed for Dual Play so far.

WHO WANTS MORE PRE-ORDER STUFF?! ANYBODY?!

If the Batman Beyond went the cartoon route like the Animated Series skin did in Arkham City, I'd totally be running around in that the entire game.

But that suit looks just as awesome!

Quote:

Batman: Arkham Knight director Sefton Hill explained in this developer diary that the new Arkham will have "No loading screens as you play through the whole game."

"You can play from the start of the game to the end of the game and you won't see any loading screens. That's all a really big important thing for us."

There's also talk of Batmobile gadgets (an EMP, a drone hacker) and New Game Plus. The latter unlocks after the game and let's you carry experience and unlocked gadgets through. "You can do some of the challenges from earlier on in the game but with a whole new suite of gadgets you never had the first time or the upgrades," Hill explained. "And any Riddler trophies that you've found are shared on both playthroughs."
Trophy and Achievement lists were recently leaked for the game.

Kalyx triaD 06-01-2015 09:23 PM

The moments in Batman or Gears and such where the hero is forced to walk and chat after you complete a mission and it's exposition time? Loading screen.

Kalyx triaD 06-02-2015 01:51 PM

Asylum and City worked right off the shelf.

But we've seen trusted franchises fuck up so I get it.

Emperor Smeat 06-04-2015 06:37 PM

Game requires around 45 GB worth of hard drive space for all platforms.

Thomas Wayne skin comes with pre-order.

Mercenary 06-08-2015 12:20 AM

Well I went all in with this game, That Batman statue is going to look great on stand.

Malfeitor 06-12-2015 12:57 AM

Just paid off my reservation.

My body is ready.

Disturbed316 06-13-2015 12:49 AM

Finally got round to pre-order this, can't wait.

ClockShot 06-18-2015 08:47 AM

If any of you guys preordered the Batmobile edition of the game, you're in trouble.

Due to quality concerns, Warner Bros. (at the last minute) has cancelled the special edition Batmobile package.

Sucks looked really nice, too.

Emperor Smeat 06-18-2015 06:58 PM

Warner Bros stated the pre-order exclusive DLC stuff will be made available to everyone by August or September. Same goes for the PS4 exclusive Scarecrow DLC pack.

Quote:

"Throughout the 6 months of additional Batman: Arkham Knight content, Premium and Season Pass owners will receive all in-game content that is offered through various retail pre-order incentives. This includes the Harley Quinn and Red Hood Story Packs, as well as any Batmobile or Booster Pack that was available as early bonuses for pre-order of the game. For those who did not receive the content with their game, these items will become available when their respective exclusivity windows expire in August/September.

"The tl;dr version of this is: Premium Edition & Season Pass owners will receive all retail exclusive DLC after their respective early access periods expire."

The PS4-exclusive Scarecrow DLC will make it everywhere, too, around the same time.

Fignuts 06-18-2015 10:27 PM

Still have to finish Arkham City which I will probably do this weekend, barring night time shennanigans.

But then I've got Elder Scrolls online and The Witcher 3, so I haven't decided if I'm even going to buy Knight yet.
