Super Mario Maker
Why isn't there a Super Mario Maker thread?
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9k5OMTYGdTs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> amiibo: https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...g=eyJpIjoidCJ9 https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...g=eyJpIjoidCJ9 The amiibo is weird. One of them will be sold separately and the other will only be available with the Limited Edition. No idea which is which. The game comes with a hardback book with levels and artwork inside. Levels in the book have a key symbol underneath them with four numbers. I'm assuming you can input those four numbers into a search bar to find them faster than scrolling through the premade levels. European box art: http://images.nintendolife.com/news/...nt/0/large.jpg US box art: http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/...0965988935.jpg You can only upload ten levels but, if those ten are well recieved by the community, you are given additional upload spots. If those do well, you get even more upload spots. You can download and edit other peoples levels but you can't reupload them. There are at least 90 costumes to unlock/access via amiibo. Link, Marth, Kirby etc. The costumes are only available in the original Super Mario Bros style. It's single player. You can leave notes in levels, Dark Souls/Bloodborn style. You can turn these off. You can see where other players died by a red X marking the spot. You can turn that off too. The difficulty rating for stages isn't selected by the creator or players. It's calculated based on how many of the people that play your level actually finish it. You can only upload levels you make if you beat them yourself. They still have stuff to reveal about the game and they'll do it over the Summer. |
So hyped for this game. Probably going to buy amiibos now.
This, Mad Max, Phantom Pain, Mighty No.9, and Fifa 16 all coming in September. Gonna be a busy fucking month for me.
Does that book come with the regular release? I saw it in the interview with Miyamoto at e3 but I thought it was for a limited edition or something.
Every version, standard and Limited Edition, comes with it.
Excited, but also super gutted as I thought this was pretty much done and coming out in July or something.
A question for anyone that played Mario paint. In every trailer for SMM, there is a frog face below the level theme selection on the left of the screen (0:15 in the trailer in the original post). It was not available in the version people played in streams, at E3 etc. Is it from Mario Paint?
Animal Crossing and WarioWare DIY both used frogs to relate to music so I think that's maybe some kind of music selection or editor. It might have been tadpoles in WarioWare. |
Dunno about a frog..... This was my sole reason for playing mario paint
http://i.ytimg.com/vi/L9oJRsw_Abs/hqdefault.jpg |
hey now.. music maker was super rad too
That minigame was in WarioWare Touched.
If anyone missed the NWC, the final shows off SMM. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/J9H8VcU21j4?start=12840" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I'm excited for this. Could potentially be the most difficult platformer ever devised from the minds of a bunch of autistic kids.
I hope not everyone makes rock hard levels and stuff. I'd rather play a creative, clever level than one that was insanely difficult.
I'm sure there'll be different tiers or categories or something... I'm picturing something along the lines of LittleBigPlanet
You can search by difficulty.
I think this will be much, much better than Little Big Planet for most people. I found LBP awkward to use, and that's coming from someone who spent a lot of time with Duke Nukem 3D BUILD and the Half-Life one. Never mind that LBP played like trash, and this will be wonderful.
Maybe it'll surprise us, but I think this will be the big hurrah of the Wii U. We're actually getting spoiled for choice this year, I'm trying to be selective about what I play and have time for, and I think this is top of my Wii U list. Xenoblade Chronicles X seems to be mediocre and Starfox really looked uninspired. |
I felt the same about LBP but everyone ignored me because I'm so in to Nintendo that any negative comments about Playstation stuff must automatically be my fan bias.
Xenoblade looks ok but it's looked barren from what I've seen. Deserted city and deserted countryside with one or two giant enemies. I'm disappointed Star Fox Zero is ANOTHER reboot. Star Fox 64/Lylat Wars was a reboot of the SNES original and now this is another one. I'm hoping, if they're just remaking 64, that it wont end when 64 ends and have a whole new campaign after this first with new missions etc. Also, stop with the sucky motion controls. |
LBP is the best shutup shutup shutuppppppp
The Mario Kart rip-off was pretty dull too.
Splatoon convinced me with motion controls, but it seems like an awful idea from what I've seen/heard in Starfox.
LittleBigPlanet was the wishywashiest game I'm afraid. I wanted to believe but you'd have to go back to some awful SNES game or Crash Bandicoot 1 to find worse platforming. Xenoblade seems to match up with this modern JRPG trend of fighting massive monsters on wide flat plains of shrubland. |
I turn off motion controls asap. They killed Skyward Sword for me. I have never abandoned a Zelda game before that. Motion controls can be fun but only occasionally, Wario Land: The Shake Dimension being a good example.
I think Crash 1 was good. I was playing a friends PS4, some LotR game where enemies rank up if they kill you etc, pretty unimpressed. He boots up Crash 1 and I had a lot of fun with it despite not seeing it for, like, 20 years. |
Splatoon's motion controls are fantastic
A few people have said that but I'd probably never try them.
I dunno, worth a shot. I utterly detested the motion controls in Mario Kart (the wheel), but felt perfectly comfortable using them in Splatoon. Of course, they do have their downside, trying to get a few games in while laying on the couch etc...
Splatoon motion controls are alright, but probably still a bit confusing. I enjoy them as the novelty of the game. It's the only time I've put up with them. Zelda was horrible. I only finished Twilight Princess because I had the gamecube version.
I started playing Crash 1 a year ago to see what it was like. I got to a notoriously hard level near the end. That game is really just hard agony. I remember back in the day thinking that the future of 3D platforming was going to be bleak. After coming off Super Mario World, we now had stuff like Crash and Mario 64 where you wobbled about. Admittedly there's a gulf between the two, but I remember getting my hands on Super Mario 64 for the first time and going "This will never catch on, people will just want 2d games" |
You can turn off Splatoon's motion controls. First thing I did when the option came.
Same here.
They're suprisingly useful for quick vertical aiming, once you get the hang of them. I notice if I need to quickly paint a wall I want to squid up,
I'm an all in or nothing guy when it comes to motion controls. Motion for verticals and stick for horizontal is weird.
For me it's the best of both worlds. X movement has to go full 360, Y movement only has to go on a limited arc. It's unique to splatoon because you have to use the Y axis in ways you normally wouldn't.
There's a Mario Maker gamepad accessory set on Amazon.

100 levels are included with the game at the start. Meant to cater more to people who don't want to bother making levels or deal with its online aspects.
http://www.destructoid.com/super-mar...s-294799.phtml |
If you don't want to bother making levels or "deal" with the online aspect..... wtf are you buying a game called MARIO MAKER for
but nice that 100 levels are included
Can't wait to download the level that is just penises everywhere.

Amiibo news! The NES coloured 8-bit Mario amiibo is the exclusive amiibo that comes with the Limited Edition. The modern colours will be available separately. You can unlock the amiibo skins without amiibo by playing 100 Mario Challenge and there are skins that aren't unlockable with amiibo. One is a goomba. |
20 minutes of Super Mario Maker (15 mins of gameplay. 5 mins of editing.)
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/m_ASTsZLEPc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> The guy doesn't exactly show him to be a world class player but footage is footage, |

The Limited Edition is up for preorder in the UK from game.co.uk.
Comes with the game, NES red/brown Mario amiibo and the hardback book. £49.99 Edit: Direct link. |

If that's correct, the player has 4 of 10 medals in the upper left corner. So, 100 courses would be the maximum we could upload. That's more levels than any previous Mario game has had. |
You could, theoretically, make your own Mario adventure.
There was footage showing "worlds" of four levels. You might be able to download a world and play the four levels back to back.
And to think a canceled Mega Man was gonna be exactly this.
Capcom really screwed up when they threw their little Megaman hissy fit.
Capcom is mad with nintendo?
You ignored me :(
I just had to quickly share that link.
No, Capcom aren't mad at Nintendo. |
Capcom had a game called Mega Man Universe where you could make your own levels. It featured various characters including Ryu as a guest. After Inafune left this and other MM titles were needlessly canceled.
Just ordered it, curse you sir!
Moi?
Gonna have to order that UK special edition for my son. He will freak out.
The amiibo will work on US Wii U's because I don't think amiibo are region locked but you'll still need to buy the US version of the game.
dunno what I hate more DLC or Amiibos
Uhg forgot to even check if Wii U was region locked. Hate that feature of consoles.
Quote:
Secondly, unlike DLC, it's never stuff that makes online games unfair like OP weapons or characters. It's just extras, like outfits in Mario Kart. Thirdly, amiibo are cool to look at. Quote:

Its settled then, I hate DLC more.

Super Mario Maker supports 99 amiibo costumes, can unlock without figures or cards
Feel less bad about buying so many Amiibo now :D |
Was recently revealed the creator of the Rayman series helped collaborate a bit with the game's development in the sense he designed one of the pre-made levels included in the game.
Also the amount of pre-made levels in the game got revised from around 100 to now 60 levels. http://nintendoeverything.com/super-...ymans-creator/ |
I'm still okay with 60... can't wait to see what twisted shit people come up with
According to Nintendo, the game has a built-in feature that won't unlock all the in-game tools to make levels until around 9 days later once you start playing. More and more tools get unlocked till the 9-day requirement is reached.
Was among the new set of features and things included from the newest trailer released for the game. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_9W_y8IlNro" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
goddddddd that trailer makes me want to play this so much
Supposedly Tingle from the Zelda series is a playable character in the game. Current speculation ranging between Tingle just being another playable 8-bit costume to the possibility of a future Amiibo figurine for the character.

Never been into "fan made" levels and stuff like Little Big Planet or whatever... Don't really think I'm gonna get this
I've been kind of the same way. I hope there's a pretty rigorous rating system that helps weed out the stupid shit levels, but I generally like a bit more structure in my games. Will have to see how it plays out.
The game ships with 60 premade levels at least, so there's that. |
Lots of Little big planet levels were bad.... "Look at this cool jump I made" or "I made the midi version of a greenday song"
Some were gems though. The rule of "you have to be able to beat the level to upload it" should make it good though. |
There are some really good rom hacks and homebrews out there. There are just piles of dogshit surrounding them.
Every now and then someone will create Counterstrike and prove it's all worth it
Megaman Day in the Limelight 1 & 2 are both really great and creative games. Sad that it looks like the third isn't happening
Hell has a hockey franchise.
it's in German, but someone made Flappy Birds in Mario Maker ha ha ha ha ha
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/FyIMbOODGmk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I haven't been keeping up with all the news/updates, but can you import custom sounds?!
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hoQF9zWVsZk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> omg. |
Quote:
I read into it a bit more, and apparently any custom sounds etc get lost when you upload/share the level. Shitty, but I guess it makes sense with Nintendo's typical stance on anything online not being able to be fun because a kid might see a dick in his lifetime
I think it'll work for your own personal saved levels though.. |
I think it would "be a strain on the servers" too.
My Wii U arrives tmw, excited for this. |
Fly swatting mini-game from Mario Paint got included for the game.

Mario Pant on Wii U would be sick
For those in the UK and pre-ordered the game from retailer GAME, the company announced people should check their bank accounts to see if they were affected by a recent glitch in their computer systems.
Instead of just charging the usual pre-order amount, the glitch caused some people to get billed as high as £328. The retailer said they are currently refunding people affected by the glitch. http://www.destructoid.com/did-you-p...--309778.phtml |
Nintendo recently released a free digital book book to act as help for designing courses and as celebration for the series 30th anniversary. Digital book is around 51 pages in length.

Day 1 patch will remove part of the limit on unlocking the full tool set for the game.
Instead of having to play for 5 minutes each day for 9 days to unlock the full set, its now just every 15 minutes played will unlock the next set of tools. No more limits based on days (or needing to advance the Wii U's clock to "cheat" the days). http://www.gamezone.com/news/new-sup...-tools-3424642 |
I will move the clock ahead 15 mins to cheat.
Picked up my pre-order over lunch break... work needs to eeeeeend so I can go home and play
Was about to make the same exact post.
Looking through book to tide me over for now. Ythe stuff with using the springs with shells looks like it has lots of potential. Worried I won't be creative enough to make anything cool. |
Yeah I have a feeling all my levels will be shit. Hoping there's a bunch of great ones made by the community though
Someone made metal man's stage from mega man 2. Hard as fucking balls too
ID?

Fucking sweet. Mario 3 bowser does his big stomp thing.

Watching people play this, and it has changed my mind. I want this game.

Hopefully one day RDD adds me on Wii U so we can play together.
