Hello All!

Welcome to the TPWW Game of the Year Thing that we do at the end of the year for the past... couple of years. Sometimes it's a complete joke. Sometimes it's taken a little bit more seriously but still a complete joke.

This year will be the latter. But remember, everything in existence is subjective and Nothing Fucking Matters in the end it All Means Nothing just have fun and enjoy what you like and all that.

But also, get ready to vehemently defend what you like in this here thread.



HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:

Gimme your top 20 GAMES OF THE YEAR in this here thread. All of you. All at once.

You can just list them out, sure. That's a bit barebones though. What I'm looking for is a paragraph or two really defending/destroying the game itself.

AND THEN I TAKE YOUR ARGUMENTS INTO CONSIDERATION AND I EDIT THE OFFICIAL LIST BASED ON HOW WELL YOU MADE YOUR ARGUMENT. The list will be updated often all the way up until JANUARY 1ST, 2016 (TWENTY SIXTEEN). In which, the final list will be cemented as will our GOTY.

Think of it kind of like how the college football system is/was. If you want your favorite game higher or a game you hate lower, you better tell me how great or bad it is.


Here is the first list/rankings for (INSERT TODAY'S DATE HERE BEFORE POSTING). As you know, it's not final. Do you not like the order? Tell me why.

Yes, I know. There will be lots of games on here that you have not played. Hell, my personal #1 and what I've put as the official #1 and what will take a strong argument to get it off of #1 is on a console that I don't even own and I haven't even played the game for 2 seconds but I know it's good. I just know.

So be sure to take the time to recognize something that's good and consider where to put it on the list.

But also having and ranking a list or things you did not interact with seems insane so...

I don't know what I'm saying.

You'll notice Fallout 4 isn't on here. I haven't played that also, but I know it's worth putting on there, possibly top 10. I've omitted it to get the ball rolling. Y'all need to yell at me to make sure it gets up there. I think it deserves to be up there, I'm just unsure where. Tell me where.

Consideration:

Fallout 4.
Telltale: Game of Thrones.

Metal Gear Solid 5
- Kojima's most likely last game with Konami pretty much shits on a lot of AAA games while not actually doing a lot. It lives on a system that brings the world to life through a simulated war economy, while also tying up one of the greatest videogame legends ever crafted. Easy nomination.

Battlefield Hardline
- The 'easier' Battlefield adopted the pace of that other shooter but still kept the frantic vehicular, team based, large player count experience. Extra points for working at launch.

Splatoon
- Nintendo's charming and deeper than you think shooter is also an experiment in shifting content live over time. Every boot up sees an announcement about maps and weapons that has a broadcast feel. Themed events also add to the live-ness of it all.

Arkham Knight
- While it sacrificed the more intimate, stealthy nature to accommodate a more action-oriented open world game, this is still easily the definitive Batman/Superhero experience.

Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition
- Let's take an awesome DMC game, add three characters with fully realized movesets, add the improvements of the PC version, and completely wash the taste of the last reboot entry out.

BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend
- This is a very good fighting game. Lots of content.

Super Mario Maker
- Everything I've seen shows that not only did the game hit the mark, it got better as it went along. I enjoy anything that streamlines creation to let gamers tinker with their fave games. Also, it's Mario.

Rock Band 4
- This will never not be a good idea as a concept, and the RB series perfected it.

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes
- A Zelda dungeon crawler, pseudo-sequel to Four Swords. Honestly, this is Nintendo taking the piss - and it still shits on a lot of releases this year.

I don't think I've even played 20 games that came out this year so I'll just wait until voting starts and pick Fallout 4 for everything

The way people freaked out due to physics glitches and putting beach balls into a swimming pool for no fucking reason felt more like a wasteland rebuilding civilisation than even Fallout 4. A phenomenal achievement.

TNMT just announced a game is in development. So sad the timing couldn't work out to ruin these awards this year. Kalax Triad has weighed in on it too. So, it's official.

I'm gonna throw in Telltale Games' downloadable series Tales From the Borderlands in as a contender.

Personally, I would enjoy a healthy dichotomy of both interesting discussion/debate along with a few wildcards thrown in there.

I'm thinking the top 3 will stay unchanged unless y'all really sell me on Fallout 4.

Has anyone here played Her Story and do they have any thoughts on it?

Personally I find that Fignuts' reference to an obscure, failed 3DO mascot is much funnier than voting for the worst game. But thats just me.

Not going to lie but laughed a lot from the reactions and once it was starting to win. Even more so when someone actually added the award to the game's wiki page.

So here are the 3 that are going to be cut by the time the next rankings are out, unless you want to convince me otherwise.














Does ANYONE want to go to bat for these 3 games and tell me why they deserve to be in the Top 20?

Also:

- Where does Just Cause 3 belong?

- Is Fallout 4 better than The Witcher 3?

- Halo 5 is not going to crack the top 10 and we're all ok with that?

How in the fuck did Her Story even get nominated? Stop it, guys, just stop. I can even see THPS5 as gag nomination.

Halo 5's extremely poor feature set in the wake of its predecessors needs to be rewarded with no chance of breaking top ten. If not for its potential as a living service thing, I would have deemed it Auto-Fail. It will take many updates to get to even Halo 4's level of replayability, and a whole new game to be compared reasonably to Reach or even H3.

When past Halos launched I would be 24/7 all over it diving into it's modes. Now it's short bursts of BTB and Warzone and then back to Destiny, Pac-Man, Perfect Dark, NBA Jam, SmashU, etc. Many in the community feel this way with people (including myself) even speculating that 343 was not fully funded. Had this been a new IP by a new team it would be a great debut, but it's Halo. The studio is three games in and they should have AAA money. No reason to have such a weak feature set, not even talking about lack of splitscreen (and that's a huge issue).

So I'm totally fine with it not breaking top ten. I'd bar it from top 20 were it up to me.

Totally. Warzone seems like a neat mode but does the REQ system weigh it down?

Hell, at least the online actually WORKS this year.

What a feast for the eyes though. I think it's really impressive visually and that's what will make it stick around.

AND how good is "Year 2" or whatever of Destiny? I was always under the impression that "Year 1" could suck my pink dick but "Year 2" intrigued me enough to go out and buy it (but haven't started it).

I'd argue the moba-like Req system makes it interesting and makes sure matches escalate into more classical BTB warfare. Then again, I don't think people would object the oldschool map control of holding down power weapon and vehicle spawns (but I guess we have BTB in for that anyway).

The big problem is unlike past Halos, there's no flexibility with the mode. Halo maps tend to have a lot of mileage pairing it with slayer, CTF, infection, bomb, oddball, etc. Warzone maps are only ever good for Warzone. If I were them I'd patch in Firefight using sections of Warzone maps.

Yeah it's sad that online working at launch is the long shot but we gotta take what we can get.

I don't think so. No game is good looking enough to make up for glaring flaws like minimal feature set and lack of splitscreen. They have to add a lot to maintain population. The drop off may be worse than Halo 4. I'm talking Titanfall drop off. I have ran into the same guys across Attrition matchmaking in Titanfall. That is insane.

Fair enough, B4 is still the better game.

I'd pick BB over MK any day of the week on aesthetics alone, and the core gameplay is much better. Full disclosure I have a bias for Japanese fighting game design and I've always been really hard on MK.

Having said that I would still get MK at a discounted price. The roster is just ridiculous and any fighting game that has Jason, Predator, and a Xenomoph must be rewarded with a purchase eventually.

Personally I would never rank MK above even my least fave Japanese fighting game. NR still has much to learn and I don't give points for gimmicks and shock value. You'd have to tell me BB is banned from ranking to be comfortable doing so.

Year 2 is improved in ways people who didn't play Year 1 wouldn't ever notice, so whatever good I tell you about it you'll never really appreciate it. From your perspective it may as well be Year 1.

But it's good. Solid core gameplay and now a good deal of quests to do especially for a new player. It's just a better package than what was sold last year.

It would be top 10 if TTK was vanilla Destiny released last year. As an expansion, when other games knocked it out of the park on their first go? Nah. Top 20 at best.

You should look at/give them a try.

I haven't really been interested in games like Galak-Z since SNES. Looks sharp, though.

I'm not too crazy about 'retro'-style games like Axiom Verge. I like modern spins on old game design, which is why I love Pac-Man DX, Tetris Splash, NBA Jam and such. Slight updates to the design and a fresh look and where games should go, imo. But when guys make stuff that's supposed to look like stuff from way back when... I just don't have that nostalgia kryptonite like others do.

I'm sure I'd love it in '91, tho.

Really want to play Axiom Verge, but haven't had an oppurtunity. So I can't really comment on it.

Just Cause 3 is kind of more of the same, but the same is really, really fun. It seriously belongs in the bottom 10 just because it is plain fun.

Does Blazblue even count since it's just an update? I mean, there's stuff like The Taken King, and then tjere's adding a couple new characters and game modes.

Blazblue is better than MKX from a technical standpoint, but since it's just a few bells and whistles added onto a game from a previous year, I would rank MKX higher, since it's a completely new (and really fun) game. That's just me though.

The last BB to come out would be tantamount to BB3, yes.

Played very little from 2015 itself:

Splatoon
Super Mario Maker
Black Ops 3
Forza Horizon 2 Fast & Furious
Goat Simultor (Xbox 360 version if it counts)
Goat Simulator Mmore Goatz Edition

Guess out of that list had the most fun with Mario Maker so no issue with it keeping the #1 spot. Splatoon in the Top 10 also seems right and maybe go up a couple of spots at the cost of Cities Skylines and Batman Arkham Knight.

Didn't play enough of Black Ops 3 to make a decision while the rest don't feel like TPWW Ranking material.

Of all 2015 releases I have played Monster Hunter 4U, that HD reskin of Abe's Oddysee and some Rocket League while I was at a friend's house and had the worst hangover of the year. Somehow kept beating everyone between violent bouts of throwing up. Points for Rocket League I guess.

Some things I wish some of you would address:

Neither interested in Fallout or Witcher.

There has only been one game I have played for most of this year and that is Destiny. However once we got to year two my game time on this has diminished. I actually liked the RnG element of the game and now that some of the guns drop by doing certain missions a different way etc I just lost interest. That and alot of the raid teams I joined were full of utter dickheads.

I agree this should not be in the top 10 as I feel the destiny experience is getting worse and now they have introduced microtransactions I can see (despite them saying its not going to happen) this game going into pay to win.

My vote for game of the year has to go to fallout 4 hands down. I could write pages of plus points for this game but I will only be repeating alot of what other people have said.

You're right, but at the same time, I feel like anything less than condemnation is being a SJW.

Like, that's the atmosphere we are now living in. You can't create something or just like something without having some sort of agenda, according to the masses. It's so fucking stupid. It's why I stayed out of arguements about gamergate or anything like it. It is all so absurd.

It's a minefield, yeah, but sometimes I think it's a necessary one. Every other medium had their crucible of sorts in public opinion with moralists and authoritarians fighting the free expression crowd. Freedom tends to win but only after eras like this. So it's annoying, but ultimately a healthy thing. It says gaming has really become mainstream now that we have our own version of Million Moms to deal with.

I just think anything with out a strong female lead is sexist, racist and anti semitic.
