Wrestlers Who You Just Don't "Get"
The other day I had a conversation with a fellow wrestling fan who sang the praises of Lance Storm as if he were some missed main event opportunity on par with Chris Jericho, and it seems that that opinion is fairly prevalent within the IWC.
However, I just don't get it. Dude wad ok, but he was behind guys like Val Venis and Raven as far as I'm concerned. He was a decent mid-card mechanic, and that's about it. I do not, nor have I ever seen any reason for the Lance Storm IWC love affair. I enjoyed him with the Impact Players, though. You fellers have any wrestlers who seem to be held in high regard by wrestling fans that you just don't "get"? |
Eddie Guerrero Dean Malenko and Tito Santana. Especially Tito Santana.
|
Lex Luger, the dude was awful.

Chis Benoit, I always found him to be super boring and robotic. Only time he ever showed any emotion was in June 2007
|
Daniel Bryan
|
Scott Steiner. I have no idea why so many people have such boners for a guy who's the clear avatar of douchedom.
I kind of get why people like Lance Storm, what I don't get is why people think he could be a main eventer/world champion anywhere. |

Him and Art Barr were just freaking awesome. that whole Los Gringos Locos faction was really great. |
Bugsy McGraw for one.
I just don't see anything about Bugsy that was entertaining at all. He makes me cringe whenever he comes on my dvd's/blu ray's. |
Lol the Bugsy McGraw/Jimmy Valient tag team was the worst thing I've ever seen
|
I'd also like to add to the list Dory Funk Jr vs Jack Brisco matches
|
The Lesbian duo of Greg the Hammer and Ronnie Garvin
|
Totally forgot to mention Bray Wyatt in my original rant. Dude's mic skills are ok in that he never stumbles or flub lines, but awful in that they are non-sensical and he has no other gear than "vaguely confusing Bayou jibberish." His in ring work is the epitome of average and his gimmick is straight out of 1995 WWF New Generation era.

if you like two pure athletes wrestling they are some of the best. however their matches are more comparable to collegiate style or something rather than Pro. Dory and Terry are night and day. Terry could do it all. |
Cena.
Not a fan of his style of promos which is either him being randomly angry at something or doing a monologue on stuff. |
J eff hardy after I was 14
|
Eddie and Benoit so much.
|
Rob Van Dam.
Just seems so terrible and does/did nothing whatsoever to garner his reactions post-ECW. I never saw him in ECW, but he pretty much just coasted on it for his whole career, and I just don't get it. |
Jerry Lynn.
|
ZIGGLER!!
Trying to act like Shawn but isn't half as good. People only care when a woman is by his side. I'm glad Hes not treated liked the star the internet thinks he is. Ryder is another and its no wonder he seems to be good friends with Dolph. |
Ken Shamrock.
|
Ziggler too.
|
Also was not a fan of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin as a face.
|
Kofi.

Rob Van Dam is probably the biggest one for me. I also have to be honest and say that I don't really enjoy Bret Hart matches too much.
|
<font color=goldenrod>Alberto Del Rio bores the fuck out of me. Good wrestler no doubt, but I just have found it really hard to stay invested in him at all.
Maybe it's a bi-product of how he was booked in 2011. Once he lost at WM27 I feel like nearly all the interest I had in him was gone. Even when he actually won the title it was just "eh"</font> |

tatanka luger hogan ryback rvd xpac jarrett |
But Honky was Cool Cocky and ba ba ba bad!
|
hated his theme, attire, in ring style, promos
|
I wasn't 'buying' Eddie until his last year, I was really digging his promos against Rey and Batista even though the whole custody battle thing was stupid.
He won the title a bit too soon though but at that point the WWE title was under the WHC. |
Brock Lesnar
I just don't get the draw. He cannot cut a promo so Heyman does it for him, he is VERY out of shape and I am just not a fan of his in ring work. He is on par with the Great Khali IMO |

Brock bores the tears out of me. What makes him such a draw to you guys? |
Because Khali can barely walk. You're a troll dude its ok, this board is 50% trolls at this point.
|

a) he hid behind a manager for Promos b) he was out of shape c) he was awful in ring which was the point I was making about Brock |

I can get someone seeing Brock as stale when lately all his matches are basically "suplex into finisher shenanigans"
but it's unfair to say he's out of shape |
I just wish that people would take the Suplex City phenomenon and apply it to Scotty Steiner's 2003 Royal Rumble performance against HHH. By that metric, it was genius, ahead of its time, and a masterclass in psychology.

Now as for out of shape if your wrestling without a top on at least be ripped (like Del Rio). Jericho is another who needs to lean down. You cant be seen as some massive bad ass when you have a bit of a gut. Now obviously he is not at the level as Bray and KO but you get what I mean right? Have you seen how knackered he is after a couple of mins in ring. Like I say though this is just my view and if you think I am being a massive troll then so be it :?: |
Is Brock fat now?
|
I'm gonna have to say Kurt Angle, he had good matches but I put him in the category, of Triple H, where he was the guy that worked with the big name. I have never bought him as a headliner and his move to TNA did nothing for his career.

I keep wanting to say Bret but I loved him as a heel. Al Snow Muhammad Hassan(IWC really seemed to like him for some reason) Mr. Perferct |

The reason people like Malenko and Lance Storm because they appreciate great technical wrestling. That said, anyone who thinks they should have main evented, is delusional. As much ad I love those guys, and guys like them, they really achieved all they could have in this business.
Eddie Guerrero on the other hand is not one of those guys. He had that unique charisma and personality that stars are made of. The it factor that so many other guys are missing. As a face, he just had this personality that made people want to cheer him. You wanted to have a beer and be friends with him. And by the same token, as a heel he could be a heat machine, and at times ciuld be downright scary. In ring Eddie was one of the best ever. He was better technically than just about anyone, including storm and malenko, but he also had an exciting repotoire of moves to get the casual fans on their feet, from the Frog splash to his friggin gorgeous springboard senton. Everything he did was ececuted with such fluidity that Eddie should have been the one called the Excellence of execution. I do not agree with lumping Eddie in with the rest of the technical wrestler internet darlings. |

Mr. Perfect- I disagree, but I understand. He seemed to only have 1 good run i. WWF from the late 80's to early 90's, and then injuries derailed him, but his work while healthy was always, in my opinion, superb. Hassan- I think everyone looks back fondly on this character not for work rate, mic skills, or anything intangible with the guy himself, but rather that he represented the last gasp of the promotion doing ANYTHING remotely daring or controversial. The character, and what it represents creatively, I can understand being remembered fondly. |
His mic skills were very good honestly @Hassan
|
Brock Lesnar may not be as cut as he used to be, but I wouldn't call him out of shape or fat. Any man that can throw around grown men like they're children for 10-25 minutes is not out of shape. And lets not discount how fast he does it. His speed is still crazy for s guy his size.
While comparing Brock to Khali is some major hyperbole, mrwalty does raise some valid points. If it were anyone else I'd probably feel the same way about the situation. But seeing a genetic freak like Lesnar ragdoll the shit out of everyone makes me forget about all his faults. He just plays the monster better than anybody. From taz in ecw, to goldberg in wcw, no one with the unstoppable gimmick has had such a presence in ring and out than Brock Lesnar. |
I thought Hassan was tremendous. His mic work wasgreat, and his gimmick was so refreshing and original. Playing an american bitter about how he is percieved because of his race, was a fantastic twist, as there was a lot of depth to it, especially in that he wasn't wrong. Plenty of discrimination against arab americans in the country.
But then they had him do actual terrorist shit which went completely against everything they had portrayed his character to be about up to that point, and it was pretty much over after that. |
That's the 2nd brit this week to talk shit in such depth about bray. If you fuckers can't brush your teeth properly,or watch the right football, are you in any position to judge wrestling?
|
I forgot to add slaughter and earthquake to my list
|
I will say Edge...
I mean, I liked Edge... but nowhere near where other people seemed to like him. Always thought Christian was the more talented one. I did really like Edge a few times, when he was really playing up that he was "crazy" vs. Shawn Michaels and then vs. Undertaker..... but for the most part, found all of his Rated-R Superstar stuff pretty passable.... |
Ditto. Never "bought into" Edge as a main event guy.
|
Brock Lesnar is fucking jacked and still pretty ripped. Don't understand how someone can call him fat lol what a society we live in.

A thousand times this! No originality, is in no way likeable, has the worst finisher in the business and that's not even his worst attributes which would be the way this clown bumps like Shawn Michaels making a mockery of Hulk Hogan but sells as if he's the Undertaker. I'm pretty relaxed about my viewing of wrestling but nothing has made me more angry than this dicks performance in the ladder match last year at Wrestlemania. Remember when he was at the top of the ladder, then Wade Barrett pulled him off the tope and hit him with the Bull Hammer. The match ended about two minutes later and that should have been Ziggler knocked out of the match. But fast forward about 30 seconds and this fraud is sprinting up the ladder again as if nothing happened. Just try and suspend my belief for a second. I must have been the only person in the world who enjoyed Del Rio kicking him in the head over and over. |
Quote:
his tag team stuff with Don Kernodle is amazing. loved their feud with Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood. |
I agree! I just watched Slaughter vs Andre 1981 MSG and it was the best Andre match I've ever seen. Sarge bumped his ass off. So under-rated. How he isn't in the Wrestling Observer HOF is beyond me.
|
Anyone who said Tatanka or THE RYBACK can just fuck the hell off. IDIOTS!
|
Honestly, I don't think there is much to miss about Ryback. I was totally sold on him by the time they pulled the trigger on him, and most live crowds were eating it up. He was an old school ass kicker that may not have been a workrate marvel, but he was charismatic, had awesome impact moves, signature spots, and a great look. People invoke Goldberg a lot due to the physical similarities, but I saw this dude as the early incarnation of Sid. They fucked it up so badly, especially the awful heel turn that just fed Cena.
|
Hideo Itami has shown me nothing at all.
|
yeah, he just doesn't really "fit" WWE/hasn't really adapted or developed a personality. Which will only be magnified more once Nakamura shows up. But he could still turn it around, "stranger things have happened".
|
<font color=goldenrod>Itami's also been out for around a year and apparently had a setback that's meant to keep him out several more months. They have a great opportunity to give him a "reboot" whenever he does return.
Hope it works. Talented guy but yeah he's felt pretty well shoehorned into NXT.</font> |

Hideo Itami has been lost in translation somehow. They want to put him over as a fantastic Japanese wrestler, but they haven't really explained what that means. Shinsuke Nakamura is Shinsuke Nakamura in any language. Hideo needs some sort of "evolution." Maybe they should bring him back from his injury with face-paint and a mission?
|
I can get the criticisms about Ziggler. As a heel with Vickie Guerrero, I thought he was tremendous. I think his original face turn was down-played and he never really got the shot he needed to make it as a main event act. That being said, I find it hard to get excited about him. He's a pinball, but he doesn't have the "gravity" of a major star. He's missing something, and it's not something really easy to pin down like ring work or mic skills. It's not even charisma. He just doesn't have that "heavy" quality. Maybe a heel turn after a "snap" would do him some good?
I can get the things about Edge too. There were times when I loved Edge, but I don't think everything adds up to him being one of the greatest of all-time. I think he's put on a bit of a pedestal by the company. Randy Orton is another guy that is clearly great, but I just don't "get it." I mean, obvious he can work and he can talk and he looks good -- but I don't miss him when he's gone. Ever. Yet he's a guy that makes every great wrestling mind drool -- whether it's Eric Bischoff or Paul Heyman. |
I get the thing about Del Rio being bland too. A phenomenal worker, but it seems that he only ever finds fire when he's allowed to be himself in other promotions. Funny that. Losing to Edge at WrestleMania 27 sucked too.

I'll say this: I don't get how Cena managed to get the WWE by the balls and how he's managed to be jammed into the position for so long. He's had an unbelievable long and unparalleled reign at the top. That's not a nasty criticism of Cena -- the guy has skill and works his ass off. I just find it odd that he's in such rarefied air.
|
I enjoyed them all but Benoit, Edge, Christian, RVD, Scott Steiner and Booker T are all guys that I didn't get as main event players. They all seemed and were definitely solid mid to upper card guys but I never felt like they belonged completely in the main event scene. They each seemed to lack a certain something, that certain charisma or star power that at least one main event guy needs in a feud of that level. Kind of similar to Roman Reigns currently.
