Brock Lesnar close to finalizing deal to fight at UFC 200

The UFC is in serious talks with former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar to have him fight at UFC 200 on July 9 in Las Vegas, multiple sources confirmed with MMA Fighting. Both sides are close to finalizing a deal, and if all goes well, Lesnar's return to mixed martial arts could be announced imminently.

While talks are progressing well between Lesnar and the UFC, an opponent for Lesnar isn't close to being finalized. It is unclear at this time who is under consideration. The 38-year-old Lesnar hasn't competed in MMA since his Dec. 2011 loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141. Lesnar's career was cut short due to his struggles with diverticulitis, and after leaving MMA, he returned to World Wrestling Entertainment, where he's been performing for the last four years.

Lesnar, considered one of the greatest draws in MMA history, left the UFC with a 5-3 professional record. He won the UFC heavyweight title in Nov. 2008 when he defeated Randy Couture via second-round TKO. Though, many would argue his crowning achievement was his performance as a headliner at UFC 100 in July 2009. On that night in Las Vegas, Lesnar avenged his loss to Frank Mir in what still stands as the best-selling pay-per-view in MMA history.

SlickyTrickyDamon 06-04-2016 08:43 PM

Maybe this is a compromise to allow WWE to book Ronda?

Crimson 06-04-2016 09:22 PM

Brock will continue to be a huge draw in both promotions. Smart business man, might as well milk all the cash you can while he can

slik 06-04-2016 09:49 PM

maybe Dana agreed to let Brock do one fight in return for Ronda Rousey wrestling at WM next year or something

Ol Dirty Dastard 06-04-2016 09:58 PM

He really shouldn't but it'll be interesting.

Probably going to be wasted on something Triple H and/or Steph related since that was the rumored plans for this year's Mania before other stuff caused it to get changed.

Wouldn't be surprised if WWE had Lesnar lose his first match back from UFC like last time just to have a laugh at them again.

Yeah just read all his twitter stuff....that's kinda fucked up. I mean I know Dana wanted a dog and pony show probably but still a little overboard.

#BROKEN Hasney 06-05-2016 06:40 AM

WWE probably getting paid for this too. UFC 200 was looking like a joke filler card and not what should be one of their biggest events so they were getting desperate.

ClockShot 06-05-2016 07:16 AM

When I first read this on my phone, I thought WWE had him locked up for a while.

But since Vince approved, WWE gotta be getting something out of this? Rousey coming for a match in exchange makes sense. Maybe stick it to CM Punk and make sure he never sees the octagon?

One can only wonder.

Charlotte holding on to the title all the way to WrestleMania and Rousey coming in to face her at WrestleMania would be an awesome spectacle. Or even better, Asuka coming to the main roster to dominate for months before facing her. But then again, I don't know if there's a good way to end either match. Especially if it's just a one-off for Rousey.

Freedom of the press means the government is not permitted to retaliate against individuals for reporting news. It doesn't guarantee media members access to things they want to report.

Theo Dious 06-05-2016 07:31 AM

That being said Dana White is a complete twatwaffle.

Yeah that's totally why they did that and not at all because they didn't think he was staying in any long term capacity.

#1-norm-fan 06-05-2016 07:49 AM

That match was booked perfectly and Cena should have won, by the way. They made the smarkiest of crowds in Chicago turn and side with Cena. They were going nuts for him by the end of it. And Lesnar's rampage could have started after the match just fine. They followed it up with some boneheaded moves but that night they did everything right.

This is good for both the UFC and WWE and opens up even more possibilities. Could see Brock wanting more fights if he wins though so we'll see what happens. You know Brock is thinking about being WWE and UFC champ at the same time now.

Rammsteinmad 06-05-2016 02:38 PM

Not gonna deny, that would be pretty cool to see, actually.

Simple Fan 06-05-2016 03:11 PM

Which happens first, Bobby Lashley as TNA and Bellator champ or Brock with the WWE and UFC straps? Lashley has been doing well in Bellator and if he wins at Slammiversary he'd be TNA champ and would only be waiting on Bellator to give him a title shot. If Brock wins this fight I can see him challenging for the WWE title at Summerslam.

Looks like UFC is going to help promote Summerslam as part of the deal to let Lesnar fight in UFC.

Hey guys watch Brock lose to some guy in a fake wrestling event tomorrow night on the WWE Network which is like a bastard stepchild of UFC Fight Pass.

Mr. Nerfect 06-05-2016 07:44 PM

I was hoping Brock would take the WWE World Title at SummerSlam, and if he wins his fight, I assume that has a very good chance of happening. This is good business for both the WWE and UFC though. I imagine the WWE will get access to Ronda Rousey now. Charlotte vs. Rousey at WrestleMania would be pretty hot.

Mr. Nerfect 06-05-2016 08:47 PM

Mr. Nerfect 06-05-2016 08:48 PM

That would actually be a decent SummerSlam match. Seems like a good spot for Brock if he loses too. Rusev could drop the US Title to Cena who can then defend it against Styles at SummerSlam. You could get something looking like this:

Triple Threat Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Roman Reigns (c) vs. Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose

Brock Lesnar vs. Rusev

Triple H vs. Bray Wyatt

United States Championship
John Cena (c) vs. AJ Styles

Women's Championship
Charlotte (c) vs. Sasha Banks

Special announcement to be made by:
The Rock (turns out to be Ronda Rousey competing at WrestleMania 33)

Fatal 4-Way Tag Team Match for the WWE Tag Team Championship
Gallows & Anderson (c) vs. The New Day vs. The Usos vs. Enzo & Cass

Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn

Intercontinental Championship
Cesaro (c) vs. Chris Jericho

Emperor Smeat 06-06-2016 03:35 PM

From a wrestling perspective, this is perfect for the WWE assuming Lesnar doesn't get seriously hurt and faces Reigns at Summerslam.

If he beats Hunt, Heyman could boast about Lesnar wanting to take out another Samoan except this time to get back his belt while Reigns would try to topple the beast for some family or Samoan honor reason.

If he loses to Hunt, Reigns could tease Lesnar with Samoan related jokes leading to Lesnar going on a rampage till he gets both a title shot and a chance at possible revenge.

DaveWadding 06-06-2016 03:36 PM

Lesnar should be getting whipped by Cain again

Do not like Bricks chances against one of the most badass heavyweights in history. If he struggles on even one takedown attempt he is fucked. Hunt is also in about a million times better fighting shape than Brock, physiques aside.

He's a top 10 heavy if not cracking top 5 every so often. Murderous standup and one of the nest chins in history. He's been k.o.ed but good Lord can he take a shot.

WWE's part of the deal could hit a snag depending on post-fight tests from New York's Commission since Summerslam is in the state this year.

Quote:

The state of New York does oversee professional wrestling and in speaking with a member of the New York State Athletic Commission, Lesnar will have to be cleared by the commission in order to work SummerSlam after his UFC 200 bout.

Laz Benitez of the New York State Athletic Commission provided the following statement to The LAW regarding the procedures that Lesnar will have to go through for clearance at SummerSlam:

Potential participation by Mr. Lesnar in an August WWE event would depend on his medical fitness and physical condition at the time of the professional wrestling show. No person is allowed to participate in a professional wrestling exhibition in New York State until he or she is cleared as medically fit to do so by a New York State licensed physician.
They'd still have UFC to help promote the ppv but could be missing out on Lesnar's possible mainstream drawing power if he's out.

Heymen going to interview Brock at 7.

Mr. Nerfect 06-06-2016 07:30 PM

What does this do to Brock in the WWE if he gets absolutely smashed?

SlickyTrickyDamon 06-06-2016 07:40 PM

As long as he doesn't get hurt he'll be fine. Coming back from UFC after a long absence and with the short preptime. People will get that.

Mr. Nerfect 06-06-2016 07:44 PM

Hmm.

Mr. Nerfect 06-06-2016 07:45 PM

Apparently the WWE have been looking at getting a Paige VanZant appearance out of this.

So, why would WWE agree to Lesnar’s UFC return? If Lesnar is to be believed, WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon didn’t have much of a choice.

Lesnar, 38, described his recent meeting with McMahon during a Monday interview on ESPN’s “SportsCenter.”

“I said, ‘Listen, old man, we can do this the hard way or the easy way,’” Lesnar chuckled. “I said, ‘Do you wanna arm-wrestle for it?’ and he’s like, ‘Yeah, what the hell.’ So, I ended up beating him, and here we are.”

According to Lesnar -- whose WWE ring attire includes MMA-style gloves and board shorts -- recording another bout under the UFC banner will prove beneficial to all parties involved.

 at Brock and Vince having a random arm-wrestling match as part of the UFC talks.

Crimson 06-06-2016 08:18 PM

Damn , I can see Hunt in a tko win. I'll be surprised if Brock takes him down at will, if he does take him down it'll have to be a finish then and there .

Vince is gonna Vince.

Vastardikai 06-07-2016 12:34 AM

I think Roy Nelson would have been a worse fight, style wise.

I know Ronda's jets were cooled following her loss, but I still think a Ronda match would be better off if done right with the right woman.

Although, I guess I could get behind a Paige vs. Paige match.

Mr. Nerfect 06-07-2016 07:27 AM

I do think Ronda is still the bigger household name. I'm expecting the SummerSlam promo at UFC 200 to feature The Rock and Ronda promoted for the event, actually.

#1-norm-fan 06-07-2016 10:24 AM

Rousey is the only UFC name with the mainstream appeal to be valuable to WWE.

Big Vic 06-07-2016 02:15 PM

What about CM Punk?

This is 100% a work. Lesnar won't lose and will go on to take the title from Reigns.

He will then move on to Cena and eventually (after 1 or 2 ppvs) lose the belt to Cena.

Rinse n Repeat

Emperor Smeat 06-07-2016 08:33 PM

Being rumored another reason the WWE had no issue letting Lesnar do a UFC fight was them paying back UFC for being allowed to use Ronda Rousey at Mania 31.

That does not seem like an even trade...

SlickyTrickyDamon 06-08-2016 08:26 PM

Yeah thanks for showing up and setting up nothing. Here's our top guy!

drave 06-08-2016 09:21 PM

But he isn't "THE GUY", so it doesn't matter.

Mr. Nerfect 06-09-2016 07:48 AM

The more I think about this, the more I think the WWE has to lose. I've thought about the damage control the WWE could do and I've heard the justifications for how Brock can lose and still keep dignity. At the end of the day though, it all means that "The Baddest Guy on the Planet" in WWE lost in a real fight.

Mr. Nerfect 06-09-2016 07:49 AM

He'll still get a pop if F5s Shane or goes on a tear, but it'll always be Mark Hunt > Brock Lesnar.

#1-norm-fan 06-09-2016 09:33 AM

I was just coming here to say the same thing. The more I think about this, the more I feel like this is a horrific idea on WWE's part.

I mean... the mystique he built from ending the streak and squashing Cena for the title has already kinda been squandered for nothing but getting destroyed in a real fight is the best way to snuff it out completely. Not worth it at all.

#BROKEN Hasney 06-09-2016 10:20 AM

I don't think there's anything to lose. Will people really question his acted role if he loses in a real fight? To me it would be like not buying The Rock as a tough guy in any of his films if he lost a fight. I don't link the two at all.

If Brock gets injured, sure, they could lose that. But then he came back to WWE after a few losses, lost to Cena straight away and still looked like a beast.

Lock Jaw 06-09-2016 10:33 AM

Yeah, I'm a bit worried about it as well, but honestly it isn't that difficult to make Brock Lesnar look like a beast again.
