No Man's Sky

So who is exploring the fuck out of the universe on tuesday?

Also, here is the day one patch stuff.

The Three Paths – there are now new, unique “paths” you can follow throughout the game. You must start the game on a fresh save, with the patch, as early choices have significant impact on what you see later in the game, and the overall experience.
The Universe – we changed the rules of the universe generation algorithm. Planets have moved. Environments have changed biomes. Galaxies have altered shape. All to create greater variety earlier. Galaxies are now up to 10x larger.
Diversity – Creatures are now more diverse in terms of ecology and densities on planets.
Planets – we’ve added dead moons, low atmosphere and extreme hazardous planets. Extreme hazards include blizzards and dust storms.
Atmosphere – space, night time and day skies are now 4x more varied due to new atmospheric system, which refracts light more accurately to allow for more intense sunsets.
Planet rotation – play testing has made it obvious people are struggling to adjust to this during play so it’s effects have been reduced further…
Terrain generation – caves up to 128m tall are now possible. Geometric anomalies have been added. Underwater erosion now leads to more interesting sea beds.
Ship diversity – a wider variety of ships appear per star system, and are available to purchase. Cargo and installed technology now vary more, and ships have more unique attributes.
Inventory – ship inventories now store 5 times more resources per slot. Suit inventories now store 2.5 times more per slot. This encourages exploration and gives freedom from the beginning. We’re probably going to increase this even further in the next update, for people in the latter game phases, and will allow greater trading potential.
Trading – trading is deeper. Star systems and planets each have their own wants and needs, based off a galactic economy. Observing these is the key to successful trading. We still working on adjusting this based on how everyone plays, but all trading values have been rebalanced across the galaxy, giving a greater depth. A bunch of trade exploits were uncovered and have been removed
Feeding – creatures now have their own diet, based on planet and climate. Feeding them correctly will yield different results per species, such as mining for you, protecting the player, becoming pets, alerting you to rare loot or pooping valuable resources.
Survival – recharging hazard protection requires rare resources, making shielding shards useful again. Storms can be deadly. Hazard protection and suit upgrades have been added. Liquids are often more dangerous
Graphical effects – Lighting and texture resolution have been improved. Shadow quality has doubled. Temporal AA didn’t make it in time, but it’s so close
Balancing – several hundred upgrades have had stat changes (mainly exo-suit and ship, but also weapon), new upgrades have been added.
Combat – Auto Aim and weapon aim has been completely rewritten to feel more gentle in general, but stickier when you need it. Sentinels now alert each other, if they haven’t been dealt with quickly. Quad and Walker AI is now much more challenging, even I struggle with them without a powered up weapon.
Space Combat – advanced techniques have been introduced, like brake drifting and critical hits. Bounty missions and larger battles now occur. Pirate frequency has been increased, as well as difficulty depending on your cargo.

Exploits – infinite warp cell exploit and rare goods trading exploit among other removed. People using these cheats were ruining the game for themselves, but people are weird and can’t stop themselves ¯\_(シ)_/¯
Stability – foundations for buildings on super large planets. Resolved several low repro crashes, in particular when player warped further than 256 light years in one session (was only possible due to warp cell exploit above).
Space Stations – interiors are now more varied, bars, trade rooms and hydroponic labs have been added
Networking – Ability to scan star systems other players have discovered on the Galactic Map, increasing the chance of collision. Star systems discovered by other players appear during Galactic Map flight
Ship scanning – scanning for points of interest from your ship is now possible. Buildings generate earlier and show up in ship scans
Flying over terrain – pop-in and shadow artefacts have been reduced. Generation speed has been increased two fold (planets with large bodies of water will be targeted in next update)
Writing – The Atlas path has been rewritten by James Swallow (writer on Dues Ex) and me. I think it speaks to the over-arching theme of player freedom more clearly now. Early mission text has been rewritten to allow for multiple endings.

Swiss Ultimate 08-08-2016 01:51 AM

I want this.

Poit 08-08-2016 01:54 AM

I will be exploring the fuck out of the universe when it releases on PC on Friday.

Swiss Ultimate 08-08-2016 02:00 AM

I love James Swallow though. I read his Warhammer 40k books and became a fan. Guy is fantastic,

Fignuts 08-08-2016 02:12 AM

I dunno about you guys, but pet aliens that poop resources sealed the deal for me.

Also, they said in the next update they are working on adding buildble bases and freighters.

Yup, same. Felt like I could wait for the goodness. Hopefully they didn't fuck up the port.

Can't wait til I discover and name The Clockasaurus Rex.

Just hope the UPS guy gets my house early. Setting a good chunk of my day aside.

Earth that was....

Frank Drebin 08-08-2016 01:06 PM

Haven't been this pumped for a game in a while. If this game even has half of what it could be it will be fantastic. I'll be sinking all my game time into this for quite awhile.

Drebin is out there.

Frank Drebin 08-08-2016 01:07 PM

Planet Poit better be full of perfectly shaped, prostate stimulating penis plants or there is no god.

Frank Drebin 08-08-2016 01:08 PM

Can't wait to find a troll like creature and name it after Olivia Munn in honor of Fignuts.

Depending on how this all works, most posters are going to have stuff named after them. Something special has to be named after damninator though.

Fignuts 08-09-2016 01:18 AM

Planet I started on has a bunch of cool cave systems.

Also , a cute little teddy bear alien.

Fignuts 08-09-2016 01:20 AM

Only thing I don't like so far is R3 for sprint. That is a daft decision, and not being able to change it is pretty bad. But I'm already getting used to it, so whatever.

Fignuts 08-09-2016 01:43 AM

Ah I see you only need to click r3 to sprint. Dont have to hold it down. Thats not so bad then.

Can't wait.

Lock Jaw 08-09-2016 03:33 PM

What exactly is the "point" of this game? Does it have no objective/goal? Or do you just fly around exploring planets with no story?

"To reach the center of the galaxy."

However the truth is more: exploration to infinity.

Emperor Smeat 08-09-2016 05:45 PM

For those interested in the PC version, developer stated the game won't be available at midnight for its release on August 12th.

Right now they are targeting 2PM EST but are making no guarantees of it being released at that time. Did state it won't happen earlier since they are currently busy working on final touches for the game and Day 1 patch.

Wasn't there something where "first discoveries" are named after the player that finds them first?

Frank Drebin 08-09-2016 07:13 PM

Yes. There's too much to really give everything a name though. At least so far, and I'm only on my 2nd planet. I'll name some duck creature after you soon.

ClockShot 08-09-2016 08:18 PM

Kinda worried about this. I enjoy it, but at the same time, I'm worried.

They just throw you right to it. No real tutorial for anything. You're pretty much learning on the fly.

Not cool with their crafting & upgrading system at all. Think they could have done some more work with it.

It's a great idea for a game. But, I think they can change or work on some things differently.

Nah, the deal is you can name everything you find, from planets to systems to animals. But like drebin said, there is way too much to name everything. For the most part I've been uploading with the default names.

I actually like that they throw you right in. Nothing has been too difficult to figure out so far.

Also, they are going to be regularly updating the game with new features.

Is this the game that has like billions of planets to explore... that's what I thought Destiny was supposed to be

Yeah, I read that they wanted it to be as easy to pick up as possible without having to hold your hand the whole time. It's odd at first but so is every game. They can patch shit quick if they wanted to I'm guessing. Little bug fixes, and I'm sure they'll have some major updates later down the road.

Emperor Smeat 08-10-2016 05:54 PM

For those who pre-ordered to get an exclusive ship, a bug was recently discovered that gets triggered when using the ship during the game's tutorial mode.

Quote:

Part of the tutorial involves learning how to craft a hyperdrive, which is what lets you move from system to system. The preorder bonus ship comes with one already equipped, and by using that ship, the game skips this portion of the tutorial. Should you then get rid of the bonus ship in favor of one that doesn't have a hyperdrive, you're stuck with having to build one--only you don't have the blueprints necessary to do so. This problem has been encountered by a number of players, including Giant Bomb's Jeff Gerstmann.

It is possible to then find the blueprints through other means, but it doesn't sound like you're guaranteed to come across them in a timely fashion. However long it takes, this is something you're intended to start with early on by completing the tutorial.

This problem was encountered by PS4 players, but it's possible it will also occur on PC when that version is released this Friday, August 12.
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/no-.../1100-6442530/

Also the creator of the game teased they might tweak the game to be "fundamentally" different on the PS4 Neo as part of a future update. Implied it could be like doing a remaster for a game where certain changes make the new game play different than the original.
https://www.destructoid.com/ps4-neo-...y-379700.phtml

Also while the game doesn't really support multiplayer, it could get added in as a future update for the game. Wasn't until the day before its launch that the creator gave an actual answer to the confusion a lot of people had regarding this situation. Him being vague and the way details were given made it seem like it was possible for other players to meet in a world or in space.

ClockShot 08-10-2016 09:57 PM

Scanner needs an update big time. Probably a lot of stuff around me I'm just walking past and it's not picking up.

Iridium. The one material holding me back from getting my warp drive up and running. Can't seem to find it anywhere.

ClockShot 08-11-2016 12:55 PM

For all the randomness in this game, I didn't think I'd find the same crashed ship on a different planet.

Starting to get attached to my flying garbage truck.

Frank Drebin 08-11-2016 01:06 PM

Game is getting ripped by alot of people but I'm not sure why or what they were expecting. I'm enjoying it. This is a game that probably requires more than a few hours of game play to determine if you like it or not. Should you be able to tell after 10 hours? Probably. I'm rolling with it though.

Frank Drebin 08-11-2016 01:07 PM

Figured out last night that I could shot down birds easier with my beam than weapon. Left 400k on the table on other worlds. oh well.

Frank Drebin 08-11-2016 01:09 PM

How are yall doing your exploring? I'm probably spending more time on each planet than necessary but learning a lot of words and banking some cash and upgrades. Want to move faster, but get enamored with trying to get "the most" out of each planet since I'm on it already.

Frank Drebin 08-11-2016 01:10 PM

Also, gonna hit my first Atlas station tonight I think. Not sure what the difference is in the two paths or whatever. I'm probably gonna follow the Atlas one.

It was pretty far out from my ship (six minutes) then i found shittons of it.

I need some sort of Isotope-9 now for some reason for the ship. It moves from place to place on the first planet but not anywhere else yet.

It's definitely not going to appeal to everyone, thats for sure. Sony got their marketing machine behind it and hyped it to the mass market audience, when really it's more of a niche experience. Doesn't help that you had to do your research to finc out exactly what you are getting.

It's right up my alley though. Exploring virtual worlds has alwsys been a huge joy for me. Even back in the n64 days I would explore the shit out of levels. Even spent an hour getting into the building with the jetpack in pilotwings just to see what it looks like.

That's the type of person it's going to appeal to. I also think this is going to be like a minecraft situation, where we start off with the basics and they just keep adding to it. They are already talking about adding craftablw bases and usable freighters for the next update, which is supposedly only a few weeks away.

If I find a really cool planet, I'll just go and and go till I've collected all the animals, then I'll look for a ship beacon and head out.

PROTIP: I didn't realize this at first, but if you bring your scanner up, you can see little white pulsing dots. Those are nearby animals. Seems like it works better if you stand still while scanning.

Also, shooting down birds with the mining laset is what I've been doing too. I reccomend upgrading the damage to enemies on the beam as it makes it much easier. They really should patch the scanner so that it can actually scan flying animals though.

Fignuts 08-11-2016 04:52 PM

One time I accidentaly landed on this huge plataeu without anything left in my launching device. No plutonium on the plateau. Had to jump off and get some. Too high to get back up to, so I had to run to all these bases looking for a ship beacon while trying to survive the extremely toxic weather, and abundance of predatory animals. It was mad.

Frank Drebin 08-11-2016 04:55 PM

The tip for scanning animals thing is a big one. Also, you can set a way point by scanning a building, but it goes away if you use your scanner again.

ClockShot 08-11-2016 04:55 PM

Really just hopping from planet to planet working my way towards the center, whilst going off the path.

Cool thing about tracking down ships is activating the beacons. Found one last night that had a supply of multi-tools. Instead of salvaging parts, I test fired one. Damaged my health, but I got this big fucking rifle of a multi-tool with a lot of slots. Keeping it for a long while.

A planet full of high alert sentinels is worse. Can't even move 5 steps with one nearby coming over to scan ya, shoot ya, and call in reinforcements.

Went off world ASAP.

Fignuts 08-11-2016 05:08 PM

So in the reval trailer, there was a gigantic sand worm, and people have been questioning whether it is still in, since no one has repoerted seeing any giant fauna.

Couple days ago, Murray replied on reddit that although extremely rare, giant animals are in the game, though he hadn't seen them on any streams yet.

Frank Drebin 08-11-2016 11:45 PM

Went to a moon just full of gold and some poison plants the sentinels don't like me harvesting. Like 25k each. Spent my day doing the boring mining and cashing in. Probably gonna do more on that moon in the next couple of days just because it's so rich, I don't know when I'll see a planet like it again. Want to save for the best ship I can find (no idea what the "best ship" might be. Storage space?) And have some left over to always upgrade the suit and buy warp drive items if need be.

Damn. 11 mil? Saw a 30 slot for 4.5. Was a mil short otherwise I probably would have bought it. Read somewhere 48 is the max on the suit so I wonder if any 48 slot ships exist.

According to reports, PC version is plagued with serious performance issues although the developers did state they are currently working on a patch to fix it. Being compared to Arkham Knight in terms of how bad the situation is for the platform.

Developer might have messed up on the minimum specs needed since one of the quick fixes is to have a graphics card higher than what was listed.

Top 10 Planet Names I hope to find:

10. Planet Caravan
9. Planet Vogon
8. Mogo
7. Krypton
6. Edenia
5. New Texas
4. Bob
3. Cybertron
2. Planet of the Mimes
1. France

I'm tempted to make #1 happen more than any other.

ClockShot 08-12-2016 08:47 PM

Found a better ship, but no warp drive. Just gotta find some copper asteroids and I'm back in business.

Found myself a nice planet with mountains of gold & nickel every few feet. Minor drawback is that it's toxic. Named it Richland. Load up the cargo bay a few times and hit the local space station, I should be fine with cash for the rest of the way.

I was watching his stream live and he said that when others complained his sound suddenly went off. It did, but for a couple of seconds only. He was in an angry mood already and fired off that comparison tweet within the time it takes Twitch chat to catch up. He clarified later on, but it was a case of hasty fingers. That being said, this is getting a huge number of refunds and word of mouth is killing it so perhaps the end result is that it was a fair comparison after all. A lot of famous let's players were refunding on live stream..

There's 114k people playing on Steam right this second. Word of mouth has given it a minor wound at worst.

If that number of people were playing on launch day, it would still be the biggest Steam launch this year. Profits are going to be bananas.

Anybody else play Star Trek music when warping to a new system?

10. Planet Caravan
9. Planet Vogon
8. Mogo
7. Krypton
6. Edenia
5. New Texas
4. Bob
3. Cybertron
2. Planet of the Mimes: Radioactive Wind planet with water. First encounter with Predators. Named one of them "Copper Kid".
1. France: Cold Planet that I landed on first. Didn't do much scanning, because I didn't realize I could scan animals at first. What a noob. :( Else I would have named an animal a Conehead.

Will continue this as time goes on.

Anybody crack and buy a ship with a lot of slots? Or are you one of the lucky ones who found a crashed one and had to do some minor repairs/upgrades?

Been searching wrecks for a while now. No luck find a ship with 20 or more slots. And I don't think there's anyway to purchase or increase slots, right?

Been reading how people are doing the accept and scrap method. But just sounds too time consuming.

SlickyTrickyDamon 08-14-2016 10:54 PM

You can only increase slots in your suit in those little mini-bunkers on planets.

SlickyTrickyDamon 08-14-2016 10:55 PM

I named my first System Big Lobes:

1. Quark Son of Keldar
2. Rom Son of Keldar.
3. Moogie.
3. Brunt FCA.

Anybody traveling there will be reminded of the traditional saying when you enter a Ferengis Home.

"A Ferengi's House is his house as are their contents"

Named a system after my mom and pretty much gave up and just accepted the money for finding them without renaming them.

I've also been playing the game while watching Firefly. Yep, perfect companion piece.

Hopefully, they have a patch out soon to fix the crashing on ps4. It's not awful, but it happens frequently enough that it's an issue.

Kinda surprised I maxed out my multi tool so fast. Went from 12 to 24 rapidly. Some on planets, others with help from the Polo and what's the others face. Going to be searching for distress signals as apparently that's the best way to upgrade your ships inventory. Everytime you find one, most of the time it's 1 more slot than you currently have. Should be done maxing out exo suit soon.

Anyone find an Atlas pass v2 or v3 yet?

Frank Drebin 08-15-2016 12:14 PM

Wondering where the story that you get from the monoliths goes. Like, am I supposed to remember all of it? Kinda wish they had a codex of sorts So I can go back and read what I've learned.

#BROKEN Hasney 08-15-2016 12:16 PM

Thinking about cheating just to get a bigger ship. Inventory management is the only thing annoying me in the game.

#BROKEN Hasney 08-15-2016 12:29 PM

PS4 disc version sold over 100k in the UK. That's more than Rise of the Tomb Raider (Xbox One), Quantum Break, DriveClub and Street Fighter V COMBINED.

SlickyTrickyDamon 08-15-2016 02:02 PM

I think i might be a few warp jumps from v2. Only have v1 (because of the traitorous Brother Nero)

Nope. I'm in the boat of finding a bigger slot ship. I've grown so attached to my "flying bird freighter" that I don't wanna let it go.

Gotta start upping the inventory on my suit, too.

10. Planet Caravan
9. Planet Vogon: Constant Toxic Rain. Has some Predators, but not too bad over all. I like exploring this planet.
8. Mogo
7. Krypton
6. Edenia
5. New Texas
4. Bob: Cold Planet at night, but mostly a decent place. Lots of life and huge oceans. Down side? Hordes of Bug-like Predators. Did not stay on this planet long.

Slowly getting my ship upgraded to a full 48 slots. Want to finish so i can install all the upgrades and farm/land/fight at my leisure. Also got an Atlas pass 2 yestetday.

Dying waiting for the patch. Crashing becoming a really annoying problem. Not even expecting any "additions" just bug fixes. Though it would be nice if they could fix the turrain fading in as I fly over it...kinda bad.

ClockShot 08-17-2016 11:49 AM

How many slots are up to in your ship? I'm guess the closer you get to the center, the more slots you can find for a ship?

Sitting on 20 slots right now, it's mad annoying.

#BROKEN Hasney 08-17-2016 11:56 AM

So there's a bug you can exploit right now for this ships. Ripped this off GAF

Do you know about the bug/exploit with Gek transmission towers? You can re-enter the code there and just ping a shit load of ship crashes from a single transmission tower and just go from one ship to the other without stopping to trade up ships. It only works on a Gek system for whatever reason.
Now just swing by all each pinged ship one by one. It doesn't matter what the ship looks like, you won't own it for long anyway. Just make sure the ship you're switching to is a +1 slot increase when transferring, every once in awhile the crashed ship might actually be lower.
As you transfer over, break down any upgrades from the old ship and transfer over as many valuable resources as possible (rare elements like Omegon. Also Nickel, Aluminum, Gold or Emeril which will be needed to repair or build Warp Reactors). For now, KEEP THE NEW SHIP UPGRADES INTACT. The upgrades on your current ship could possibly have an impact on the upgrades you'll find on the new ship. [note: this needs further testing, but I'd recommend waiting to break down upgrades on the new ship until you've found another vessel to swap]
After the transfer is complete, you'll only need Iron (for carite sheets, you'll need 6 for each ship repair), Heridium and Platinum (you'll need some to fuel the launch as well) to fix your new ship just enough so it call fly (only the Launch Thruster and Pulse Engine). These are widely available on almost every planet, so if you run out you can quickly farm. Once the repairs are done, you'll be ready to fly; head to the next pinged ship. Rinse and repeat the last 3 bullet points until you hit 47 slots.
For the final 48th slot, now would be a good time to get picky and choose a ship you actually enjoy. I took another 40+ minutes to find one I liked but if you don't care what your ship looks like, just pick whatever.

The ship transferring step of the process took me around 2.5-3 hours for 13 ship swaps with another 40+ minutes for cosmetic/vanity purposes. Again, YMMV but that 2.5-3 hours is small in comparison to the grind of tens of millions of credits. My final result

I think I'm saved in a Gek system now actually. Will have to try when I get home. Was just upgrading one ship per planet and using that as an excuse to move to the next planet/system.

To answer your question, clockshot, I bought a ship with 25 slots and have salvaged ships since then. Think I left off at 30 or 31 last night.

ClockShot 08-17-2016 01:38 PM

I just installed a Tau warp drive in my 20 slot nogusara fighter after I went into a black hole. Found myself in a Korvax system now.

Gonna planet hop this one then warp to one of those special colored systems you need a special warp drive for. Farm whatever I can for cash, and hopefully a nice trader ship comes my way I can buy.

drave 08-17-2016 04:26 PM

So excited for a game just to exploit it?

Sepholio 08-17-2016 04:35 PM

Bought a 30 slot space truck at the station last night. Decided to start my grind to 48 from that point instead of the starting 15 slotter.

Easy money making method for anyone interested: When you warp into a new system, always check the store at the station first. You'll notice sometimes that items will have a gold star next to them which means they are incredibly valuable there. Keep doing this until you find a system where Gravatino Balls are a rarity. Then planet hop until you find one that grows them (pretty common occurence). I made 5 million creds in like 30 minutes just running back and forth from planet to station doing this.

Sepholio 08-17-2016 04:36 PM

I still haven't found the 3rd path either. I refuse to believe free exploration is the 3rd.

Has anyone figured out what the 4th and 5th tabs on the galactic map are even for?

Inventory management isn't fun. Getting the biggest ship has made the game worlds more fun to explore as I don't have to worry about mining when full. All it does is take away the single annoying thing with the game and leaves you to enjoy the best parts.

drave 08-17-2016 06:13 PM

Thought part of exploring IS inventory/resource/asset management though......

Blitz 08-17-2016 06:48 PM

Everything I've read has said that when you find a new multi-tool/ship it should usually be 1 slot above your current one. I found 1 9 slot multi tool near the beginning, and since then, every ship/tool has been less than my current one.

Did find a perfectly located planet rife with Albumen Pearls and easily lost sentinels. The farming is ongoing.

Frank Drebin 08-17-2016 08:31 PM

The bug Hasney described appears to be correct. I'm "loading up" on distress signals. Lets see if the ships are there.
