Easy choice for HBK. Nice pick though.
|
Got waaaay more enjoyment out of watching HBK than I ever did out of Bret. As good as the Hitman was he never lived up to being "the best there is. The best there was. Or the best there ever will be" in my eyes.
|
Bret for me. Bret was always my favorite. I think my first introduction to wrestling was when I was two years old, the 1994 Royal Rumble. Bret going out there with a destroyed knee thanks to his brother and winning it with Lex Luger made him my favorite, and he never disappointed.
Bret gave me my favorite matches out of so many wrestlers. I like the HBK-Diesel No holds barred match from In Your House: Bitter Friends, Better Enemies, but the No DQ match Bret had with him at Survivor Series 1995 was way better. Bret's matches with Stone Cold are still talked about today as some of the greatest matches of all time, and a lot of people think they're better than HBK-Taker at Mania. |
A lot of people think that HBK-Undertaker or HBK-Flair is better than Bret-Austin. Or even both. There's a lot of people in this world.
|
HBK by a mile over this curtain jerker
|
Voting Bret because CANADA #1
|
Voted for Bret hart despite being quite vocal over the years about how much I dislike and find him boring as fuck outside of his Anti-America gimmick. On the premise of wrestler refering to in-ring performance I can't deny his technical greatness sleep-inducing as it is. HBK wipes the floor with him in literally every other regard.
I also tied this bitch up. |
HBK takes it here cause his mic work outshines Brets
|
Always thought Hart took the business too seriously. HBK seemed to not. Wish there could have been a middle ground between two of them. Bret was the better mat worker. Matches always looked like a struggle. HBK's matches seemed more like the showcases that people like on the indy scene now. Acrobatics over wrestling. Wrestling wins. Bret gets my vote. Also he didn't bury anybodies career when he was in the ring nor did he ever injure anybody.
He became a prick in later years because he has had a hard life after he retired. Shawn was just a prick because he could be because he was a top guy and threw his weight around no matter if it was his business or not. Also he fucked around with Chris Candido's relationship. Chris was a nice guy who got taken advantage of. No being born again can save him from the fact that he was a total shitbag to anybody not in his junior high fake gang the Kliq. |

Mick Foley is mediocre at best, especially after the shit he pulled with Ryback. HBK and Bret would have not entertained Rick Martel and The Skinner, that's for sure.
|
Mick foley is 10000 times sexier than Shawn Michaels tho. He should have the sexy boy theme song

Bret and Shawn are my top two favorite wrestlers. 1A and 1B, so to speak.
That said, I was a Bret fan first so he gets my vote |
Holy shit, I'm agreeing with Juan. Bret is my fav rassler. I think the world will end soon.
|
Love Bret and prefer him over HBK, but HBK is better overall despite being a dick before he "found Jeebus"
|
Neck and neck, two favourites of all time for me and would have been even if HBK had never come back...But he did come back and his run and those matches with HHH, Taker, Angle, Jericho, Flair in that time period push him into the lead for me.
Just an unbelievable career and his matches always carried so much emotion, which is exactly what is missing from wrestling today... |
Bret is my favourite....how can I not vote for him? He may not have been the best mic man, but made up for it in other areas. And this:

Bret had his moments but HBK was better all around. Slightly better in the ring and miles better as a personality/on the mic.
|
Bret handed out those sweet sunglasses to kids.
|
Well when HBK wins maybe someone can tweet this thread to Bret and he can whine.

Hot match. Havent voted yet.

Really tough choice but gave the slight nod to HBK.
Bret was the better in-ring wrestler while HBK was the better performer. Both had some really great matches and moments during their careers. Ended up leaning towards HBK because of his great 2nd run and Bret's post-WWF years not being as great (not entirely his fault though). |
I've gone with HBK because I've found more personal enjoyment with more of his stuff. I'm waiting for the day that Bret Hart really clicks with me though (I've had to watch his stuff in retrospect) and I regret not voting for him. There are some ways in which he was better.
|
I remember when I was a kid and I was supposed to hate Bret during the '97 Hart Foundation run, but I never understood why people were booing this guy, he was always right. I never really liked Shawn even when he was face. Not that any of that matters really, but it certainly made my vote a lot easier for Bret

Shawn Michaels.
Bret was always one of my faves when I was a kid. Both men are pretty much equals at everything. They're both great workers, great on the mic, they've both had their "dark sides" and have done things you can fault them for. But they are basically two sides of the same coin. But the second half of HBK's career really did lead to some incredible matches, which is sadly an opportunity Hart had taken away from him. |
Old, broken, past his prime Shawn Michaels spent 8 years somehow still being the best wrestler in the world.
Silly how close this is. Just silly. |

I really don't think he would have. Bret didn't have the personality to draw like Shawn had. The most personality he showed was as a heel and it worked mainly because of Shawn and Austin.
|
Bret Hart is basically a Canadian Jeff Jarrett
|
Bret was not booked biggest when his dad was booking. So, nah.

HBK all the way. Sorry to say but I just never really understood the hard-on for Bret.
|
I don't think Destor's point is relevant, except to say that if Bret hadn't been concussed and made a big return to the WWE, he'd have been treated like a god and everyone would bend over praising him like they do Shawn. They don't make them like they used to, even when it comes to alleged "bores" like Bret. I mean, look at Goldberg this year. Tore the place down because he's from that era and knows how to be a man. Keep in mind this is not a guy that was known for his promo ability or savvy to negotiate the business besides be clicked and pointed and look intense while doing it.
You can't really know the minds of others in this voting process, so if people want to imagine HBK's greatest success as being relative to having a longer career in a shittier era of wrestling where he was basically fellated as being God incarnate, with the last remaining wrestling fans at the time being people who grew up with HBK, thus have a sentimental and confirming bias that whatever he does is going to be rated quite highly, it makes sense that this is a little closer. I hope that makes sense. Kind of a stream of consciousness from me. |
Well it wasnt my point really. I was building off #1fans opinion.
He stated that draw power should be subjective to what if variants. Which should extend to others aspects as well. He made an argument a few rounds back that he would look at these more in a if wrestler A was in another other postition in any other era would he still have sucess. It was more of a devils advocate post than my opinion. And i should say its a perfectly valid method. Im more practical personally. |
Oh okay, point taken.
|
Was not expecting this to be so close. Maybe I should have put more thought into my vote.
|
Battle of the egos here but I had to go with Bret if for no other reason than he did less damage to the locker room.
|
Still sitting on my vote
|
Bret just for the simple reason that he was my fav as a kid.

Never really that over Competant technical wrestler Both fucked over Vince on their way out: Bret with Montreal and Jarrett holding Vince up for $250,000 before his match with Chyna Both sunk their respective company's rating while champ: Bret in 94-96 WWF and Jarrett 99-00 in WCW Mediocre mic skills Didn't draw a dime Canadian Jeff Jarrett |
Using my theoretical for Bret's sake, imagine a healthy Bret in Shawn's position for WrestleMania 23-26. Can you imagine him challenging Cena for the title and it being as big of a match? Can you imagine the same emotion coming from him retiring Flair? Can you imagine the crowd going nuts and Jim Ross having an "out of body experience" during his match with Taker and it being so good that it closes out the end of the show the next year as Bret's retirement match?
All those situations just seem like they'd be less "major" with Bret in Shawn's shoes. The matches could be close from a purely technical standpoint (though I don't think Bret had the same ability to pull a great match out of ANYONE that Shawn did) but the emotional investment would take a dip because Bret wasn't the same performer. Shawn's ability to get people emotionally invested was off the charts. |
oh my god Fan.
Just because you didn't like Bret as much as Shawn doesn't mean you are right lol. Some people, (right now 20 out of 38 in this thread) prefer Bret over Shawn. It's not taking anything away from Shawn, it's just that they prefer Bret. They don't need to justify it to you. They were both really great at different things. Brits and Canadians tend to lean towards the fact that Bret was our working class hero who we could relate to. A realistic guy in a cartoon world and a courageous champion. It felt real with Bret. Americans tend to like Michaels grandios showmanship and his over the top antics. He also brought his own sense of realism but he certainly didn't fit under the category of working class hero. Shawn was an obnoxious twat, even when he was a nicer guy in his 2nd run. They were both great, liking one over the other shouldn't lead to such a massive debate because when they were together, they were universally 1 and 1a. |

It's more like the "I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS EVEN CLOSE" like dude, honestly are you serious? It's very dismissive.
You may not intend it that way, but it's like "why am I going to talk to this dude if his immediate stance is to completely dismiss my opinion". You obviously have your mind made up, what's the use in trying to have a proper discussion? |
and then in response to what I say, you dismiss my viewpoint as though you think I'm a complete idiot.
"lolwhat" just implies you think I'm retarded. It's fine if you want to be "like that" but don't expect people to want to engage with you. |

All I'm saying is bring the enthusiasm of debating, dial down the attitude.

CyNick is just a cheeky bugger. You act as though someone stabbed your mother for not holding your viewpoint.

it's whatever dude. do what you have to do. I'm just telling you how I feel you're coming off.

"OMG stop thinking you're right!" as a response is silly however and now any discussion is impeded because we have to discuss this stupid shit. lol |

Either that or you should be getting pissed at every post you read here because that post was about as innocuous as it gets. I even made it a point to add "It seems" and "I think/don't think"s for people like you and it STILL sent you over the edge. My God. lol |
For the record though, I know for a fact Shawn is better than Bret and you're definitely wrong for thinking otherwise.

Wow.
This is a hard one. Both men are tremendous wrestlers in all categories (ring work, mic work, storylines, tag or single etc) so there is no doubt that they can match one another in any category you want to judge them at. Ive always been a huge Bret Hart fan as a kid, but I also loved Shawn Michaels' DX and beyond run. Was never, personally, a big fan of The Rockers, and always had a soft spot for Janetty. Even as a huge Bret fan, I think the Montreal Screwjob was one of the stupidest controversies in wrestling history. There is no reason why Bret should've been so concerned/angry about the result of a wrestling match which everyone knows is pre-determined and the company owes the right to decide how it goes. Plus, it was no secret that Bret was going to WcW and we didn't want anymore WWE titles getting acquinted with the trash can, so I always thought Bret was in the wrong on the "screwjob" and that there was no screwjob to begin with. I'd understand if it was a MMA match and a fighter was called to have tapped when they didn't, because that's real - but getting angry and holding a decade long grudge over that is just silly. Shawn did amazing work after his return from injury, and matches like his retirement of Flair certainly showed him to be deserving of all the praise he's ever got. Meanwhile, Bret didn't get a chance to have those kinds of matches because of an unfortunate injury, and I firmly believe if it wasn't for that accident (I don't blame Goldberg for it even though I'm not a fan of his), that Bret would've given us so much more. Despite all of this, I couldn't bring myself to vote for Shawn. Maybe it's a bit of personal preference or childhood nostalgia, but just by a grain, my scale tilted towards The Hitman. I just wish he had given us more. |

But let's all post 1 way to be politically correct/nice to each other. Sounds fun. |
Kinda surprised Bret is winning this late considering Shawn usually runs away with these contests.

Dunno why Dale is being a SJW against debate right now. The point of these threads is for people to hash it out. Thats why i do them.

Still sitting on my vote btw. Ill only cast if i think a deciding vote is needed.
|
I love hashing it out but it's a bit ludicrous is all.
|
like... the Bret vs Shawn debate could easily go either way. I'm Bret all the way but I'm not going to sit there and tell someone they are wrong for saying Shawn.
He's Shawn fucking Michaels. And he's Bret fucking Hart. |

Fully expect Shawn to comeback like Kurt did on Dusty.

HBK simply for the fact that Bret refused to do business in 96. He claimed he did all this and all that for the WWE when in fact he needs to turn it around and WWE did all this and that for him. Disrespecting the business on the way out the door by refusing to do the JOB as the outgoing champion and put the new one over is like the cardinal sin. They did it in the territory days and he came from his dad's territory. So fucking what if you are in Canada, HBK has done the JOB in San Antonio.

Ryder voted HBM. As well as black widow and johnsmagic

I wish socks would not vote but we dont ban socks here so there isnt much i can do other than accept it as part of it.

That only protects integrity if there are more socks on the HBK side. Even if Black Widow and Johnsmagic or whatever are both socks, Bret still has more sock votes. You've been duped into adding another unearned vote to the Bret side. This whole round is a sham. |
Ezekiel Kane. The Terminator. unclebrown. Spaff. Who the fuck is Spaff???
