Gotta go with my bias and go with the Edge-e-nator
Edge is one of the greatest of all time. Sting is not.
Sting for me in ring never struck oil unless someone else did the drilling. And his menacing crow days was one note.
Edge was versatile and over delivered. I think edge exceeded his talent level and sting failed to meet his own. |
The Rated R Sooooooouperstarrrrrr
Edge owned Smackdown and had epics with Cena, Angle, Undertaker. TLC's and all with Christian. Sorry not sorry. Sting was mostly hype and no payoff. On this day I vote Edge. |
I watched more Edge than Sting....and yes, Edge was more well rounded and more versatile.

Doesn't change anything that I just said
Sting is one of the greatest of all time. Edge is great, but not as great as everybody always said.
Sting underrated, Edge overrated. Both great. Sting gets my support. |
Sting is a legend. Edge was great but his legacy is over-hyped. He was never the star Sting was.
Edge is like one of the best supporting actors in history. Sting on the other hand, was a lead actor, but not one of the best.

Sting was a great star. He wasn't Hogan or Austin or Rock but if we're using them as the standard, forget about it. Edge never had that "it factor" to get himself to "face of the company" level. Sting did. Edge never had a match like Sting-Flair or an angle like Sting-Hogan. He was just... good.
Yeah but Sting never had any matches like No Mercy 1999 ladder match, WrestleMania 2000 ladder match, both tlc matches, his entire feud with Cena, his entire feud with taker, his matches as part of the smackdown 6, his mania match with foley or mitb victory. You're underrating Edge like crazy. Besides Flair, Hogan, and Vader, what else did Sting do that really stood out?
Edge may not have been #1 star but he had a hell of a long run at the top AND on top of that was part of revolutionizing the way people worked matches in North America. Not the biggest fan of his promo work after he teamed with Christian, but he was a top notch performer.
Sting was awesome, but Edge had a hell of a lot to do with WWF being the winning team even if simply in a supporting role. That TLC shit kept the ball rolling when WWF could have lost their momentum. |

I always feel great about my pick when STD picks the other wrestler.

One thing i love about these is in one match i will be arguing alongside dale or whomever and in the next the lines are drawn completely different and we're at odds. There's something really honest about that. No parties in this just the topics.

Lol at the joker Sting pic
 said i would
Edge. Couldn't stand him when he started his single run but man did he ever get good.
God this one's tugging at my heart strings, they're both so good. Sting is one of the best faces ever and had one of the best feuds of all time producing no shortage of classics.
Edge's first run as a solo face run was pretty boring, but then he turned heel in 2004 and had one of the best heel runs ever from 2004-09. My heart says go with Sting, but if Edge wins I'm cool with that. |
Hmm, that's a tough one. Used to love Sting as a kid, then kinda hated him because he feuded with Hogan, whom I loved, but still wished Hogan would turn face and they'd team up.
Didn't care for Edge in his Brood/Ministry days, but his solo heel run was so fucking fresh, he was a beast in the ring. Also, I can appreciate when a wrestler retires in his prime (even if it's because of injuries), not running around in the ring with saggy tits in his 50s. Gonna go with Edge. |
Lol that pic of joker sting makes me cringe
Love Edge, but have to go Sting....Meant more to the companies that he worked for (WCW & TNA) than Edge ever did in WWE (unfortunately)....
Yeah but that doesn't mean he was better than Edge
Sting isn't that great, neither is Edge but Edge is a bit better.
Firmly beleive that Edge was a lot better at what he did than Sting was at what he did. Sting was given a spot in two particularly struggling companies, whereas Edge crawled his way up through a company that didn't think they needed him until he proved they did.
When did Edge prove WWE needed him any more than Sting proved that WCW needed him?
Tough choice but gave the slight edge to Edge.
Mostly because of feeling in terms of longevity, Edge's was better in overall quality and didn't watch or have a connection with much of Sting's earlier work in WCW. |

In 1994? Like 5 years after Sting was pushed as the face of the company? Then they decided to sign the biggest star in wrestling history and take the company to a new level.
Okay... so when did Edge prove WWE needed him? Did I just miss the point where Edge made WWE say "We're good. No need to bring in or build bigger stars. They don't exist. We've got Edge?" |
Lot of Sting haters around here.
I bet Meltzer would pick Sting.
Nah, Edge had a shampoo commercial in Japan.
Why you avoiding my question?
Gonna have to count this as a NECESSARY correction of STD. You're forgiven. Don't let it happen again. |
Sting is iconic. He is the face of WCW. The whole character and look is iconic. People paid money to see a 56 year old icon wrestle at Mania.
Edge was a great all rounder, but there was nothing iconic about him. Sting had two great iconic personas and looks too. In fact, he was so iconic, that he was the most over wrestler in the biggest company in America without wrestling a match, for over a year. Sting is on another level to Edge. |
STD's too busy playing AIM trivia to answer your question
I'll answer it and say that when Edge became a main eventer it was during the brand split era and John Cena and Batista are about the only ones who "carried" WWE. But when Batista was hurt on SmackDown! and RVD was blazing that Iranian tobacco Edge proved to be a reliable alternative, and a great one at that. Around 2007/8 when he feuded with Cena, Batista, & Undertaker and he main evented the same show that had Ric Flair's retirement they were showing that he was one of the people that could carry the company, he just never had to because he had that star power around him. Like I said, he's one of the best supporting actors of all time where as Sting is a lackluster starring actor. |

I don't think WWE ever NEEDED edge.
How about when WCW NEEDED Sting and he didn't deliver?
Quote:
Sting however, much like Hart, was set to succeed and failed to deliver at every turn. Early 90s, Late 90s, TNA doesnt matter. No one ever got their money's worth out of Sting. |
Toughest round yet. Genuinely had to leave it a day or two coz I couldn't be bothered to pick immediately. I went with Edge though. Huge fan of Stings, but I feel Edges "prime" was more entertaining and varied than Stings. Edge's also happened at a higher level, on a more global stage than Stings did.
I also feel that Edge had a lot more memorable moments that have stood the test of time, most of of what I can remember of Stings biggest moments have been tarnished by WCW's awful booking or general shoddiness. Prime example is Sting/Hogan Starrcade '97 (which, for the record, to ten year-old mark me, that was the greatest match ever and the finish didn't detract from that at all... it's only as time goes by that I look back on it and roll my eyes are how messy the whole match and ensuring shenanigans were). |
Quote:
Yeah because of Hogan, Sting didn't even talk during the build up and then showed up out of shape
Quote:
Regardless of how the match played out... he drew the biggest buyrate WCW ever had. Of course Hogan/the NWO had a lot to do with it. But it was Sting that he drew the biggest buyrate ever with. People wanted to see Sting vs Hogan.
Because they gave his character a complete overhaul and Hogan was an unstoppable heel with an unstoppable faction and that this new character Sting played was probably the only thing that could stop them... and it flopped.
Sting didn't say a word the whole time. So wouldn't it be more fit to say the people who booked the Sting character drew the biggest buyrate WCW ever had? And even then, did that buyrate do better than WrestleMania XXIV, which was main evented by Edge and Undertaker? |
I feel like sting did talk, it was rare, but he did talk.
If we wanna factor in booking, we're gonna have to go both ways. Without a brand split, Taker, the streak and WWE deciding to put like the 3rd most hyped match on the card on last, does Edge ever have a shot at main eventing a WrestleMania?
Also, comparing the buyrate of a WrestleMania with that Starrcade is just ridiculous. lol |

Would be like Hogan and Andre selling out the silverdome and then putting an an all time turd. It matters. |
It's not a huge deal in this context. It drew. Because of Sting. That's what we're talking about. Whether Sting was able to draw at any point. Hogan vs Andre wasn't exactly a great match technically either. That matters if you're Dave Meltzer. Doesn't take away from how it drew. If it was a million times worse, it wouldn't take away from what it drew.
It drew because it was well booked. When it was time for him to hold up his end he failed.
And Hogan/Sting wasnt "tachnically bad" but was simply bad. It was recieved poorly.
Thats the point here, when it counted Sting was a guy you cant count on. Ever.
He was like a Lex Luger you could cary.

But regardless. I'm not basing my choice on draws. I've said before I don't think that's the way to judge a guy because booking plays a factor.
BUT, as far as "No one ever got their money's worth out of Sting", how much more money's worth do you need to get than "biggest buyrate ever"? |
As far as why I actually made my choice, I don't think Edge could have been a bigger star in an ideal situation than Sting.

WCW did not get what they paid for that night. |

I bet Edge would've been a bigger deal in TNA than Sting was
I would say Sting did help TNA when TNA had pretty much no one.
Edge would have helped more though
They had Kurt Angle, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Kevin Nash, & Dixie Carter...
Sting showed up in 2003, Kurt didn't show up until 2006.
Sting was there for like one match until January 2006...
I just don't get all this super high praise for Edge. He was solid, don't get me wrong, but to me he is just a tag team wrestler who benefited from WWE having a lack of talent at the right time for him. His legacy resides in the fact that they didn't have enough legit main eventers. He's like Jeff Hardy without the personal problems.
Christian > Edge anyways..............
Shocked by the margin of victory
Given everyone's age, and the fact the WWE "won the war", it doesn't surprise me that people leaned towards Edge.
Sting underrated here on TPWW
Sting is dope. But I grew up with Edge.

My vote for edge isnt so much "edge is great" as its "sting wasnt worth what they sold him as"
he had a dope match with DDP that is one of the best tv matches I've ever seen.
Sting had about 5 matches that werent completely forgettable. Those 5 matches were classics tho.
Yeah maybe a touch more than 5 but you're not far off.
What would Sting have been without Mangum TA's car crash? Edge doesn't owe his career to another guy's destruction.
Magnum was the shit. Sucks so much that his career ended how it did.

Yeah. And then Sting dropped the title back to Page in a 4 way later that night.
So when I opened this thread and saw the competitors I knew this would be a good one and by the replies it has lived up to the back and forth in my head. This is definitely debatable on many levels but in the end I am going with Sting. Both had great careers but for me Sting takes it. Sting edges it out because overall he eeks it out as a true main eventers.
This was a tough one, but i went with Edge.
I have seen Edge's work from E & C, The Hair vs Hair Match with Angle, Edge's First main event fued with Cena and then Undertaker. Sting had Great matches but I had to go with Edge just due to Familiarity. |
Edge spear sucked.
Truth
Damn, I forgot to vote, even though it wouldn't have made any difference.
Who would you have voted for
Edge.
Get your shit together CK
Well then you didn't deserve to vote anyways. :shifty:
