I enjoyed RVD matches more. Rewatched him vs undertaker at vengeance, and his stuff with Sabu.

Punk was superior on the mic, but GTO was lame and 5 Star Frogsplash was beautiful.

RVD and Punk both have had a huge impact on the industry. The way guys work now for better or worse is molded by RVDs ECW run. Punk will undoubtedly be a huge influence on the stars of the next 15 years at least.


Once RVD left ECW he became a routine worker. He had the same match every night. He collected a pay check and went home. Punk however wouldnt phone it in. No matter the material he tried to make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

Some times he failed but he tried. RVD can make no such claims.

That's my main beef with him..... how a guy can be so lazy and one dimensional and not evolve or change for over a decade...... but then people still gobble on his weiner and chant for him because of what he did in ECW. The man has just been coasting on that, and it makes me angry.

I didn't see any of the ECW stuff but I bet it wasn't even THAT good, and like much of what I have seen of ECW was dependent on "mature content/language/hardcore wrestling"......... Totally could be wrong, though...... his work out of ECW leaves me no desire to ever go and watch him in ECW.

In the reverse kind of thing, I thought CM Punk sucked when he was in WWECW, and cringed when he won MitB and won the title for the first time. I didn't see anything special, but everyone was gobbling his weiner and chanting for him, and it made me mad......

He worked hard to win me over, and became one of my favourites ever.

RVD, never cared for Punk and his long title reign caused me to stop watching WWE for a while.

Had this same convo 8 years ago. He had one good run when he was first brought in. When he still believed he was going to be "the man" and then once the office stripped his passion away he resided to just collect a pay check for a decade.

I dont blame him for it, but it does tarnish him.

Didn't he have really good matches with Shelton Benjamin, Randy Orton, Christian, John Cena, Edge, and the like? I really enjoyed his run to the WWE/ECW Title in 2006 before his drug bust as well.

Didn't he have an awesome match with Y2J Chris Jericho on Raw a few years ago? He hasn't phoned it in for a decade, he's had solid material over the last decade.

Who could forget his epic victory over AJ Styles for the TNA World Heavyweight Title.

And for the literal 100s of carbon copy matches he had?

Nah, his ECW stuff was really good and it wasn't based on the typical "mature content/language" thing. There was SOME of that. His character had a bit more edge than Benoit/Jericho/Malenko types but he fit more in that category. He was mostly awesome for putting on 5-star matches with Jerry Lynn and making the TV title seem credible as fuck. He was a really good bridge between traditional rasslin' and the "edgier" stuff.

Punk had a ton of going through the motions matches in his last run before he left for like a year.

Punk had flaws as an athlete but not as a worker. His style could be a bit sloppy from time to time but through the sheer will and stubbornness, he would have fast paced, well worked matches. He "maximized his minutes" as JR would like to say. He also took his limited athleticism and ran further than anyone could ever imagine.

RVD is about 10000000 times the athlete Punk is, but nowhere near the worker. Tons of botches, reckless spotfests and yeah, his run in the fed "was what it was". Love him, has some great moments, great matches and is incredibly charismatic but Punk as the complete package is better.

Punk's ROH run is overrated as well

Who could ever forget the monster's ball match Rob Van Dam had with Abyss to get revenge for Abyss attacking him with Janice and maiming him to end an episode of iMPACT!

Punk never, at any time, put on the same the match night in and night out. RVD was paint by numbers, you could blindfold yourself and call the match on time. Its not the same in the slightest and Randy orton for example who goes through spells and not putting in the effort. RVD like Mysterio would just do a routine amd take it home.

Felt he was better overall. Both were pretty good for in-ring skills in regards to their style, Punk was better in terms of character/gimmicks and promos.

ECW era RVD was great and so was early WWE era RVD but afterwards felt very one-dimensional as just another high flyer the WWE. He did have the chance at potentially becoming a bigger star but threw it away because of drugs and at the worst time possible.

Kinda mind-boggling to me that there are people on THIS site who have seen nothing of RVD's ECW run. Changes the perspective of who I'm talking to around here.

RVD as the TV champion was stuff of absolute legend. I feel like I don't even have to mention the matches with Jerry Lynn, but I guess I do.

He did get stale in WWE, but if you recall, he was SHIT HOT during the InVasion, and they made it pretty obvious that they weren't going to the pull the trigger on him, which possibly could have been the reason he stopped caring.

I remember going to the InVasion PPV and talking to people in the seats next to me about how dope RVD was, as they had never seen him. After his match with Jeff Hardy that night, they all became fans.

Punk was pretty entertaining, and I'll say he's maybe the best promo of the post-Attitude Era. He was involved in some absolute classics with John Cena and Daniel Bryan, but I honestly seldom thought his matches were as great as people were making them out to be. If you would have asked me this question in 2011, I'd probably still be blinded by the pipebomb smoke, but now with some clarity and retrospect, I have to give the nod to RVD.

RVD was like nothing I'd ever seen when I first saw him as a mid teen watching ECW. That Heatwave match with Sabu vs Shinzaki and Hayabusa blew my mind.

Punk on the other hand looked like a gas station attendant and cut a work shoot promo. So basically Punk is a homeless looking crybaby who copied Vince Russo's shit.

CM Punk blocked me on Twitter for saying AJ Lee looked like Gilbert Gottfried.

RVD in ECW was amazing and he was even great in WWE for a while. But his matches became so formulaic and routine. More so than usual for a WWE match. It got to the point where I cringed when his music hit.

Meanwhile Punk never got stale for me. From his great fueds in ROH with Samoa Joe and Raven, to his las royal rumble, I always found him entertaining.

Thrilla also brings up a good point in that many people here seemingly haven't seen a very signifigant portion of either man's work.

Punk. RVD could have been a huge deal if he cared enough to engage in the backstage politics.

I enjoyed RVD more, really. ECW RVD was awesome, WWE RVD was still ok in my books but not as good.

This is a much easier call for me than the Punk/Edge one. Punk was really good his whole career and kept finding new directions to take his character as well as being a great all-rounder.

RVD was great early on but he's been the same exact guy from late ECW to present. Same character, same spots, same everything really. Hasn't evolved one iota in nearly two decades.

Finding ECW and seeing what he was doing, changed my perspective on what wrestling could be. That RVD was so athletic and exciting to watch. His character, of the guy who wanted to work Mondays, was perfect. Some really funny character stuff to go with his awesome matches.

I think he was fun and charismatic enough in the fed to beat Punk. As others have said, athletically, he was on another level to Punk. I still feel Punk is overrated because he was "edgy" and spoke his mind. But there is more fail in his WWE stuff for me than pass.

I remember feeling terrible over the RVD situation in 2006. Finally had momentum and was being given a run with the top belt, dual champion even. And then

July 2nd: Arrested for drug possession
July 3rd: Loses WWE Title
July 4th: Loses ECW Title
July 5th: Suspended 30 days

I mean he completely fucked his own mouth on that one, so he has nobody to blame but himself. But as a fan of the guy it bummed me out because it was pretty obvious that was the end of him as any sort of top guy. Had been waiting for it for years only for it to end so quickly.

Once he returned he just seemed completely checked out during the last 10 months of his run, and it's sometime in there that I soured on him and never really got back to being a big fan of him.

I was ok with it, because even before he messed it up, he was still not very good. Everybody was gobbling his weiner and going "Finally he gets the chance to show what he can really do!"

But it was still bad, and I wanted to hurt somebody when he became champion.

I kind of lean towards Lock jaw in that RVD was criminally overrated for a while. Punk could have an amazing match sans chairs and tables and the guise of ECW. RVD could barely throw a punch.

Mind you, some of Punks offence was uh.... questionable. But he told great stories whereas RVD did not.

Aside from RVD in ECW, I would argue that his matches in the WWE were not RVD in his prime, but also not the terrible paint by the numbers affairs they're being described as.

He surely had trademark spots, but so did Hogan, Austin, Rock, Undertaker etc.

I don't recall ever watching a less than solid match from RVD. That includes TNA.

RVD is definitely a hall of famer but I think Punk just brought more to the table. RVD was by far the superior athlete, though.

Well the move was easier for him in ECW because he was using it on guys his size. When you put him in there with Kane and he hits that move it's tough for him to get his leg up that high to hit someone as big as Kane so it looks more like a chest kick than a face kick.

RVD was an amazing athlete and I was always excited for his (early) matches. Some of the stuff he did was ground-breaking and stunning.

Compare that to things like Punks terrible flying elbow. Their disparity in athleticism is a big enough issue on its own to make this competitive imo.

Yes, Punk was a better personality and had that grittiness and resolve, but absolutely nothing wrong with voting for the better athlete with the more exciting moveset. He coasted later in his career, but like Gertner said, he had taken his hits by then.

Achievements are pretty much on par as performers, but RVD made a bigger impression on me. I think CM Punk is massively overrated, so easy choice.

Also, just as a PS, I actually think it's laughable that Punk beat Edge, who was a bigger star, better performer, with a MUCH better career imo, but each has their own perspective I guess...nothing wrong with that.
