I think it's supposed to be "cute" but I find it very off putting and annoying for some reason.

Would imagine that if Taker were around today we would have him smiling on social media while meeting fans and the like and it wouldn't really be the same.

The way wrestlers interact with fans has definitely changed and it's ok not to like that aspect of it. It makes it harder for me to get lost in it all when I see Braun Strowman smiling like a goofball.

Some people like it and think it's great that we see more of them, that is absolutely fine too. To each his own.

I can see what you mean by "insulting intelligence" but I just see it differently. Whenever I watch wrestling, I want to believe that Strowman really is a badass. I want to suspend that disbelief and see heated promos between him and Lesnar. The match sells more tickets if people see them as two monsters.

In my opinion, Lesnar is still so successful because he is a legit badass and he is believable. People tune in to see what will happen in his matches. He is very well protected as a character by Heyman creatively, as I understand it, and I think it works.

Undertaker was successful for 25 years because people wanted to see the Undertaker, not Mark Calaway.

I just think that sometimes knowing less and seeing less can be a good thing

There absolutely is truth there, and it frustrates me when people can't wrap their head around why. I used to be one of those people, but once you see the rabbit you can't go back to the duck.

It's also amazing how many people can see wrestling working outside wrestling, but then continuously state that it won't work in wrestling. The evidence is sitting right there in the real world, and people are still like "No one takes this seriously, so people should just laugh and admit they are playing characters and actively try to be jokes," forgetting that they are already part of a bubble that has way too disproportionate an investment in the concept of wrestling as a whole, and project their expectations of wrestling onto the casual non-viewer (at this point).

It's like the same-sex marriage debate. Every time a country goes to legalize it, the same arguments pop up from conservatives that claim it is going to be the end of marriage and moral society or whatever, when you can clearly look outside the window and see that this has not been the case in any place it has ever been legalized. They are slippery slope arguments, and a lot of people think wrestling has to be on this slippery slope into self-parody.

It's not super hard to be right about WWE. It very clearly isn't very good, some people just try to extract positive nuggets from it.

You can argue that Finn should be "in character" all the time I guess, but he's also currently a good guy, so him being adorable in photos only serves him being a good guy.

The internet has transformed wrestling into something else, sadly I don't think wrestling has reacted well to this change, but IMO New Japan currently holds the closest thing to the answer (even though I've had limited exposure, it's better than any WWE stuff I've seen in 16 years).
