I was watching a dvd where HHH lumped himself in with Austin and the Rock as the guys who saved the WWE. It got me thinking :

If we removed HHH from ever being in the wwf it would not make much of a difference to the company. He was/is an average wrestler who would have been forgotten a long time ago.

So if we went back in time and deleted HHH - what would have changed?

2000 maybe wouldn't have been as good. But that's about it.

Some other people would have been champion during his reign of terror. Batista might not have been as big of a star.

Triple H disappears? Then who would hump a Katie Vick mannequin dressed up like Kane? Without that, i wouldn't want to be part of the WWE Universe

Triple H is a very over act and has been since 97 unless you ask the internet. DX ran by H was a merch mover of the absolute highest order at the peak of the attitude era.

Re-watch those attitude era HHH promos and matches. MIDCARD at best. He rose to the occasion in late '99 and had a FANTASTIC 2000. Post quad injury he was just another big body who had some good moments.

DX merch was gangbusters. His position on the card doesnt mean he wasnt a top act.

If you remove HHH then you remove DX which is huge.

I feel the good HHH does outweighs the bad.
His reign of terror as boring as it was did make Batista into a huge star, I would not be against another reign of terror (with a different heel).

for DX if a few things shifted around you would not need him keep HBK add X-Pac and the outlaws.(granted the chemistry of original DX is why it worked but the kliq were all buddies so who knows)

Who came up with the idea of DX, HHH or HBK?

He was certainly there to keep it going, but he wasn't the most over act in it.

Look, he's always been good. But he's not in anywhere NEAR the same echelon as Austin and Rock, and that'll always stick in his craw. It's why he feels the need to fucking tell everyone he was.

There's nothing wrong with what he's accomplished, especially becoming COO of the company and having a long run. But there is something inherently irritating about him trying to present himself as some kind of wrestling god, which he isn't.

DX, which was an integral part of the success of the fed over WCW, was as over as absolutely anythign else in the business at that time. Austin, Rock, NWO, Goldberg, DX. This was the attituted era, and era coined by DX's image more than anything else.

H was a huge contributor to the boom. Him being a part of unit shouldnt discredit that. the HBK version of DX literally changed the business and the H led version was a massive act at a time when there was seriosu competition.

If it werent for the reign of terror no one would even question his role in the era.

Also without him someone like RVD could have been made champion. So thank goodness he was there.

Mankind
Goldust
Terri

But what about Road Dogg then? Surely he should be held in the same regard as Austin and Rock? Or the Godfather?

No but he is held as one half of one of the greatest tag team of all time thanks to his run in DX. It's poportional.

Thats how over DX was. A mediocre team is one of the top 3 ever.

In terms of backstage, WWF would have gotten rid of a Hogan-like politician during the latter half of the Attitude Era and early Brand Split Era. Maybe RAW has their own "Smackdown 6" type era instead of the Reign of Terror. Same for arguably one of the biggest ever Mania mistakes of Triple H over Booker T at Mania 19 never happening. Possibly Shane never leaves and his ideas and plans becomes the new future for the WWE instead of Triple H and Steph's plans.

In terms of stars, post-HBK DX suffers a lot or never occurs since Triple H was the person who put the 2nd group together backstage. WWF also would be missing someone very valuable as a top heel during the late Attitude Era especially after Austin was out due to injury and Rock taking over as the big face star.

Shane doesn't have his father's mind for the business. I've read /listened to multiple interviews that said Shane's ideas were usually too far out there. I don't think Vince would have given the same amount of power to Shane as he did Steph and HHH

Booking wise I'd agree but he did play a big role in pushing Vince to do Attitude Era and some of his non-wrestling ideas were stuff WWE ended up having to do as catch up or as missed opportunities.

If Vince had a more open mind, its possible WWE shares or gets more credit than Netflix as the innovator for online streaming service since Shane wanted one done a year or two before Netflix did. Same for waiting years to grow their online presence since Shane had ideas to do it in the early 2000s. In terms of missed opportunities, could have bought UFC when it was really cheap and cover the viewership and talent drain from the Cena era.

Oh for sure. Shane was a huge ECW fan. He definitely had influence and good ideas. I just wouldn't hand him the day to day running of the company.

A world without a younger Stephanie having her boob slip out of her top as HHH prepared to Pedigree her is not a world I want to be part of. :shifty:

Someone else would have been the top heel in 2000, and they may have been cycled out at a healthy time, and maybe Stephanie doesn't get the influence she has and wrestling stays good.

Say what you want about Triple H, he does have a nose for the business.

Big Shows run in the end of 99 and 00 would have been better. It also would not have ended so instantly.

Someone else would have had to be the top heel too. There were a couple of people to choose from. Plus, Angle was already on the rise at the end of 99. There may have been a couple of rough months but nothing significant.

DX would probably not have been the same (if it even existed) but the Outlaws would still have been stupid over. Road Dogg was that good on the mic. X Pac would prpbably have reached the same height as he did too.

HHH has done more for the business than Rock or Austin in my opinion. Anyone who dislikes him has been worked to that point which shows how good he is.

Well ya, of course he has done more for the business because he never left.

Rock was better than HHH IMO. Way faster, could bump better, and was just wayyyyy more entertaining in ring. I'm not including his return after a decade away, more discussing his prime.

HHH in 2000 was better than a lot of people though, you could say in that one year he was better than the Rock, but never found that same form.

speed is important for certain things. IE. you want to have faster punches, and be able to hit the ropes fast and execute moves explosively. You don't want to rush through spots.

HHH at his worst is plodding and BORRRRING.

HHH is a powerhouse though, he doesn't need to be fast. He works his style and has perfected it.

I don't think you know the definition of the word "perfect".

When I think powerhouse, I think Brock, or Braun, not Hunter.

He works a low risk, low reward style.

Nah its just a classic style you may not be into. He tells stories. And he does it very well.

I like Trips, but he's nowhere near "perfect".

He's able to execute when he's on his game. His matches with Foley were fucking fantastic, Royal Rumber 2000 being the best. And it wasn't just because of Foley. The pace was furious, even though HHH used his elementary "maneuvers". I was a huge fan of his punches at this time, which were his bread and butter. Also liked how he set up his face buster.

But post quad surgery he just wasn't as crisp or zippy in the ring.

Got to admit as a kid I loved DX, how much he was involved with the workings of it I'm not sure but I sure as hell had fun watching them.

He was a great heel , I genuinely disliked the guy when he aligned himself with the McMahons. I would mark out when he lost, his match against Jericho in 2000 when I thought Jericho had won the title is one of my all time favourites. The hated I felt towards HHH after that was massive.

Then with Evolution , i loved the angle when they turned on Orton and the whole feud that followed.

You mentioning RR 2000 made me look up the results. Tazz defeated Angle by submission in 3:15 minutes. Wow, did not know that.
