WrestleMania 35 -- Down to Philly and NYC -- possibly announced this week!

So WrestleMania 35 is expected to be announced next week in either Philly or NYC. Either way, it will be an outdoor stadium. This is per multiple rumors on Twitter, Reddit and the Wrestling Observer forum.

Interestingly enough, I've seen several mentions of it being in Queens at Citi Field, which would be the first time a baseball stadium held Mania since WM 19 I believe. For those based in NYC -- Would Citi Field be closer to the Barclays Center than Met Life?

Mr. Nerfect 01-19-2018 10:32 PM

I'd like to see one in Philly.

Evil Vito 01-19-2018 10:37 PM

I am so going if it's in NYC.

Yeah it's about 45 minutes on the Subway, maybe a 25 minute drive. It's in NYC where as Metlife is out of the state. If they went to Citi Field I'd be super happy.

Jordan 01-19-2018 10:42 PM

Also Citi Field looks awesome and I can imagine the WM set looking awesome there.

Evil Vito 01-19-2018 10:43 PM

Citi Field has held wresting shows before, but the capacity doesn't seem like it'd be on par with recent Mania venues.

Droford 01-19-2018 10:44 PM

It's gonna be Philly they will announce it at the Rumble in Philly. 20 years since WM 15 which was in Philly

Jordan 01-19-2018 10:45 PM

That makes sense. I'd probably go. I've never been to Philly, and I can only imagine the week's events would be insane.

Evil Vito 01-19-2018 10:45 PM

If they do have it at Citi, I want Takeover, Raw, and SmackDown at the Arthur Ashe Stadium next door. No big set. Would have a real old-school feel to it.

Droford 01-19-2018 10:46 PM

I'm going if its in NYC too but I'm not doing the whole weekend cause everything will cost way more than if its in Philly.

Droford 01-19-2018 10:48 PM

I want an official meet up thing so I don't end up getting ignored by Xero again. Everyone can come watch me play BJ at Sugar Hoyse the last time I was there I won $2000.

Droford 01-19-2018 10:52 PM

I went to ROH/NJPW War of the Worlds and NXT in Philly 3 years ago. Guaranteed somebody will run shows at the old ECW Arena. (Wrestlecon?)

A look at the possible venues

I have thought Arthur Ashe would be a perfect WWE setting for a while too -- I think they should use more tennis stadiums -- Set up/Views are pretty perfect for WWE if they peel back on the giant set.

Emperor Smeat 01-19-2018 11:06 PM

If I had to guess, WWE probably ends up picking NYC over Philly.

Last time WWE held a Mania in the NY/NJ area, it was one of their biggest successes ever and could see that be a huge influence on their decision. Also the historic ties NYC has with the WWE which could be another big factor swaying their decision.

slik 01-19-2018 11:20 PM

I think it will be Citi Field in Queens

Shisen Kopf 01-19-2018 11:32 PM

Hope it's Philly, i have friends in Philly and will go, will be my 5th mania. How many have you guys been to? I have no friends in NYC bc they are the worst people in the world and hate everyone.

screech 01-19-2018 11:49 PM

I don't think they would do Citizens Bank Park. Capacity is ~44,000 and they like to run in bigger stadiums. Lincoln Financial Field can accommodate almost 70,000.

Mr. Nerfect 01-19-2018 11:56 PM

Yeah, WWE will probably choose something that fits about 70,000.

Citi Field seats 45k.

When you add 10-12k of seats on the field that's not far off from some past WM attendance figures (the actual ones, not the exaggerated ones where WWE adds 10-20k people).

WMXXX - 59k

WM 31 - 57K

SlickyTrickyDamon 01-20-2018 12:33 AM

Don't like the risk of Northeast weather. Jersey or Philly. I'd pick Jersey. MSG could have NXT or the Hall of Fame.

SlickyTrickyDamon 01-20-2018 12:35 AM

I'd say baseball fields are out. Dimensions don't work.

Droford 01-20-2018 12:46 AM

Manias been held in a baseball stadium 4 times

ClockShot 01-20-2018 04:12 PM

I'm down with either one, but I'm pulling for Philly.

Got an uncle who lives outside the city and I can crash at his place and hopefully pull off the marathon weekend. Save myself a lot of cash on a flight and hotel.

Vince better start praying to the weather gods now. He timed it just right when it was at MetLife not to long ago.

slik 01-22-2018 02:45 PM

We might find out tonight!

Randomly thinking too -- what big WM match can the E come up with for Reigns next year after the eventual Lesnar feud? Joe? Orton? Corbin? Heel Dean? Heel Balor?

Not sure any of those 'scream' WrestleMania.

Emperor Smeat 01-22-2018 05:52 PM

Probably Braun.

He's already Reigns' top rival and a match at Mania would cement them as the mega feud for the new era.

Mr. Nerfect 01-22-2018 06:11 PM

CM Punk, Brock Lesnar III, Bobby Lashley, John Cena, Randy Orton, Shield Triple Threat, AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, etc. He won't necessarily close the show every year.

slik 01-23-2018 12:43 PM

WWE is doing a press conference at Philly's city hall...WrestleMania 35 announcement incoming?

Stadiums specifically made for baseball or ones they make do?

slik 01-23-2018 12:46 PM

Rogers Centre is primarily a baseball stadium

Safeco Field is primarily a baseball stadium

SlickyTrickyDamon 01-23-2018 12:50 PM

A dome isn't a stadium.

slik 01-23-2018 12:51 PM

Nevermind it was give Bayley the keys to the city or something. Lame.

WTF are you talking about

SlickyTrickyDamon 01-23-2018 12:53 PM

Stadium isn't a blanket term for place sports happen.

Big Vic 01-23-2018 12:59 PM

Which dome isn't a stadium? Rogers center?

Droford 01-23-2018 01:02 PM

Skydome was built for Baseball
Astrodome was built for Baseball
Safeco Field is a baseball stadium with a retractable roof

Big Vic 01-23-2018 01:11 PM

Skydome is a stadium though.

Shisen Kopf 01-23-2018 02:21 PM

Good grief. My Irish ancestors didn't die so rasslemania could be held at a stadium on television and not TV

As someone who has been to the Skydome for WM18, you can say that YES, ITS A STADIUM

Safeco Field is used primarily for baseball and literally has the word "field" in the name...

Mr. Nerfect 01-23-2018 06:37 PM

I always like to think about when WrestleMania won't sell out. It seems like it will be a long way off, but WrestleMania 32 was on a slow crawl until Shane McMahon got added to the card. They can't pull that rabbit out of their hat again. It seems like people will just go to WrestleMania, but when does that stop being en vogue and when does it get to the stage where WWE just can't get 70,000 people.

#1-norm-fan 01-23-2018 07:06 PM

There's only so many Lesnars, Takers, Rocks, Cenas, McMahons, Stings, Goldbergs, etc. they can bring in to make it feel special. It will live off the name for a while after all those guys can't physically even move and WWE can't trot them out for star power. But once it becomes the norm that Reigns, Rollins, Ambrose, Balor, etc. are the TOP draws for WrestleMania (on top of the fact that they've all faced each other a hundred times on Raw already) it's gonna be an issue.

Mr. Nerfect 01-23-2018 08:00 PM

Think they have to go back to running smaller arenas? Or did they say "fuck it" and let someone like Velveteen Dream be an actual star?

slik 01-23-2018 08:32 PM

Just move it to 40k stadiums then.

They had a go-home RAW to a WM at SkyDome once, I wonder what that drew (WM15 or 16 I believe). I'm sure they cut off part of the dome for the show and it still looked fantastic on tv.

slik 01-24-2018 01:21 AM

I still think Queens is getting WM btw, not sure why they didn't announce it yet

slik 01-24-2018 03:39 PM

Based on these photos of concerts at Citi Field 2nd base would be a good spot for the ring:

Big Vic 01-24-2018 05:08 PM

WrestleMania I think gets sold on it's name alone now.

#1-norm-fan 01-25-2018 02:25 AM

Yeah, but you've still gotta keep that name meaning something or it loses that luster over time. That's why they still bring in all the stars who are over from past eras that they can for it. They still TRY to make it special because if you set the precedent that it's just another show main evented by the current crop of stars that is identical to a B PPV card, the name eventually loses its value.

Big Vic 01-25-2018 08:11 AM

All they need to do is bring back the crop of legends that got insanely over between 2002-2017.

Jordan 01-25-2018 08:39 AM

I don't think they will run a baseball field for WM if they are using one for RR, so I'd say whatever they use will be a stadium and seat 65 plus.

They'd be great for House Shows. Maybe not with their current sets, but it could work if they wanted something more basic again.
