Vince McMahon's XFL 2.0 to be announced today
Vince McMahon's XFL 2.0 Football League to be announced today
He'll be doing a press conference for his new media company, "Alpha Entertainment" later this afternoon. |
I'll watch when it launches. If it's entertaining, I'll stick around for the season.
|
I'm really worried about this.
Worried that if anthems or kneeling is mentioned that I may rupture something laughing so hard. |
BTW Slik, slight mistake. The trademark registered is, amazingly, UrFL or URFL

"Your Football League"
Ahahahahaha, I love Vince McMahon |

So glad Head cleaned himself up and found work. |
While XFL is going to be the headline-grabber, I think this is a potentially much bigger, wider-reaching story.
1. It's Vince diversifying his stock, creating a whole other company (advertising "investment opportunities"), that he's going to great lengths to state is outside of the WWE Umbrella. A big part of me sees that and thinks "tax dodge"/"inheritance nest egg". 2. WWE shareholders are, historically, very jumpy at the idea of Vince McMahon not being involved with WWE any more - stock plummeted when Trump "bought" Monday Night RAW. There's a perception that Vince can't do anything but wrestling, and that nobody but Vince can do wrestling So while telling everyone that this isn't coming from WWE money obviously seems like a way to appease shareholders who might get scared at the idea of a disastrous XFL relaunch, that doesn't completely wash with me, because it still suggests a Vince who, if only out of necessity, will be considerably less involved with WWE. 3. Vince setting up his own company, separate from WWE, and separate from WWE shareholders, makes me think he's at least more open to the idea of selling up than he's ever been before. He's seen the sale of UFC go through, and seen that it hasn't materially affected Dana White's position in the company. I don't necessarily think he will sell, but I think he's actually thinking about it rather than simply dismissing the thought as he would have a few years ago. With media mergers and buy-outs the talk of the day, and Vince not getting any younger, I can see this being his time to finally sell up - particularly with FOX shopping around and in dire need of content. 4. And this might be the big one. Vince started registering football-related trademarks around the same time that Trump started openly criticizing the NFL. The first obvious thing to come to mind is that Vince is canny enough to capitalize on that, and know that having an alternative league would play well with Trump, and with Trump supporters - who might want to boycott the NFL, but have a tough time committing to it due to them lacking a "Trump-friendly" alternative to shift their attentions to. The alternate, and frankly more fun explanation, is that Vince moved first. Vince began the groundwork for an XFL reboot, and put in a word with Trump, who began using his platform to systematically undermine the NFL in the eyes of his supporters. In another lifetime, "Vince McMahon is exerting his influence on the President of the United States" would be an utterly bonkers theory - but we know they're close. And, while Trump spends all his time on Twitter, he only actually follows around 50 people; take out members of his family, his staff, Trump businesses, and FOX News hosts, and you're down to single figures. One of those he follows is Vincent Kennedy McMahon. |
Commissioner Head > Commissioner Roger Goodell
|
I have no doubt Trump will encourage people to watch it, with he and Vince being long-time friends. And I think with Trump's endorsement it guarantees that first game will be a big ratings getter.
|
No eM pleH on head..not head
|
Trump will be the first commissioner

If the rumored 2020 launch date ends up being true, that already gives the revival a huge advantage over the original. A lot more time to properly build the league and training for teams.
Quality of games probably still going to be hit-or-miss but not as bad of a disaster like the original league. |
The Revival are great.
This, not so much. |
The Revival might play in this league, who knows?
|
I honestly am curious as to how this will shake out.
Realistically, the original XFL wasn't as big of a failure as everyone hyperbolically misremembers. Just hope the biggest lesson was learned from the first go-round of nearly complete divorce from wrestling. Do like they did with Linda's political career... short of firing people for mentioning the other product, mayhaps. I mean, having JR in the booth was awesome, but backstage skits and trying to force "angles" (like the one coach who said he wanted no part of any potential wrestling style nonsense and was just there to coach football, and they kept trying to manufacture some drama around him to react to and he kept no-selling). |
You think the new XFL stars will be used to put over the old XFL stars?
|
Here we go...
|
Why are they just doing the WWE 2k18 advert without Snoop Dogg?

yeah, 2020

Vince just said that watching 3-hour long matches can be laborious at times
|
2 hour games, no halftime
|
No black athletes are going to want to play in the XFL and it'll end up being the least talented football league that's ever existed.

Just say "The national anthem will be played before players are on the field"

Anyone with criminal records are not allowed in the league, even a DUI.

Vince restraining from flying into a rage via repeated questions.
|
He said 30 man rosters so I don't see it being regular 11 on 11 football. Maybe 9 on 9 with 3 linemen. I don't think playing in NFL stadiums is a good idea either. I think MLS stadiams would make more sense and whynot just leave the field the same and play on a wider field.

I believe he does play it before Mania.
|
|
"This is the Future" bit at the end reminded me of Snoop's commercial for WWE 2K18.
|
Thought it was funny anytime Kap was brought up about playing he'd always say if a player follows the rules but said Tim Tebow could play.
|
Vince just must love to wank away money.
|
He kept talking about 7 months where football isn't played, but then he said looking at January/February for the season. Isn't that when NFL is in playoffs and Superbowl?
|
Is it just me or does Vince suddenly look much older? Noticed it on that farce of an anniversary show that he looks older and his voice sounds to be very hoarse.
|
Here's the full summary of the conference:
Network talks? Don't be silly! Safety? Yes! Safety how? No idea! Cities? I dunno! BUT ONLY GOOD PEOPLE NOT FOLKS THAT KNEEL THROUGH SONGS OR HAVE CRIMINAL RECORDS WE HAVE THOUGHT THAT PART THROUGH THOROUGHLY |
I'd say he'd start right after the Super Bowl.
|
|
You can tell how much the wrestling landscape has changed.
XFL 2001 - The Rock cutting promos! Wrestling announcers calling the games! TONS of crossover. XFL 2018 - Nope. Nothing to do with WWE. No crossover. It's not even the same company! What's a WWE??? |
Given how terrible the talent pool for this league is going to be, maybe I'll go to the tryouts for the Stamford Swagger Soaring Eagles.
|
Thought Vince didn't own the rights to the XFL anymore.

People standing by tallying perceived microaggressions.

Well, Shaun King is a race baiter and jobber on Twitter so this tweet was expected.
HIT MY MUSIC DUDE |
Plus Vince was clearly talking about Manziel.
|
After 2016 I cut myself off from news/politics. Still shows up on my facebook feed which augments in my mind to a box that says "why are you still on here, go live life dude" so I go live life, brother(s)

That Shaun King tweet is quite a stretch from what was actually said.
I mean I think it's total bullshit that Kaepernick has been effectively blackballed from the NFL. Any argument that he's not good enough to play there can be debunked fairly quickly when you compare his career to the Brandon Weedens of the world. So if he's then told he can't play in the XFL, it's obviously due to his social stances, and it'd be 100% fine to call bullshit on the league. But there's no evidence yet he won't be allowed to play there and the league is still two years away. So King should cool his jets. |
Quote:
The part I find funny is how he said "no politics or social issues!" And then forces his politics on people. It would be easily avoided anyway, just do the anthem before the players come out. Seems to be a cynical marketing move anyway. It's not like he has the anthem played at Wrestlemania even. |

That’s not what he said about Kap at all. He was asked again about if Kap would be allowed to play in the XFL he said “Why not? As long as he’s a good football player and a good person and can abide by our rules, anyone can play.” I support you, but this take is wrong.
— Burt Macklin (@MrDrake23) January 25, 2018

Vince gonna vince. If he mandates players stand then if they sign between the dotted lines they know what theyre going to get into.

I'm worried that Vince McMahon focusing on this will mean a decline in the quality of WWE programming in the coming months.

Very interested to see how this develops. That video package mentioned fantasy sports and.....BETTING?!?......makes it seem like they've got lots of other stuff up their sleeve. What they're trying to accomplish is doable, but they have very little room for error.
They've obviously gone all in on crowd source marketing and they're going to lean on it heavily in trying to figure out what they'll do differently from the NFL. |
