Dragon Quest 11

Any hype on TPWW for this? Drops next Tuesday.

Ultra Mantis 08-28-2018 01:17 PM

I have never played a mainline Dragon Quest, but I have heard good things about them. Not really top level "hype" because I know absolutely nothing about the franchise and especially this particular entry, but I was interested enough to put it on my amazon wishlist in May. I have my eye on it.

Destor 08-28-2018 01:23 PM

I preordered it. Friend who lives in JPN said this was a top of the line series there so I'll def be playing soonish. Prob around early winter.

Ultra Mantis 08-28-2018 03:12 PM

Yeah, currently have Nier Automata, Ni No Kuni 2, Witcher 3, Nioh, Breath of the Wild and Persona 5 NG+ queued up so that might be my 2018 schedule filled.

I've definitely heard it mentioned as the top JRPG series but I think only one of them was ever released on home console outside of Japan before this. I know there have been DS ports but I'm not much of a handheld guy.

Seph said he was looking forward to this one more than Octopath so going to assume he will be all over this if he ever made it through the gate.

Destor 08-28-2018 03:17 PM

I feel like he was consumed never to be seen again :'(

Ultra Mantis 08-28-2018 04:55 PM

Seph's business trip was actually touring with a troupe of travelling actors in a quest to track down his missing father :'(

Destor 08-28-2018 05:26 PM

Lyblac wins again :(

Destor 10-20-2018 06:51 PM

Forgot i made this.

Veronica is the sassiest character of all time and i love her.

Game is painfully easy though.

Fignuts 10-20-2018 10:05 PM

When I was 5 or 6 years old, one of the first games I got for the NES was Dragon Warrior. It turned me of so much, I didn't play another RPG again until Final Fantasy 7.

Destor 10-20-2018 10:53 PM

Yeah early rpgs werent the best. FF2 and FF3 are some of the worst games ever made.

Fignuts 10-21-2018 01:10 AM

FF1 was really great for it's time. Still fun to run through it today. Prefer the GBA version though. Some great sprite art there. Specifically for the four fiends.

Fignuts 10-21-2018 01:13 AM

Also, I wouldn't say FF3 was bad. Hard as balls, and has issues that certainly don't make it any easier, but I wouldn't put it in the same group as FF2.

That said, you couldn't pay me to go through that final dungeon again.

Fignuts 10-21-2018 01:16 AM

Also, ff3 had this

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/emK5wgrVp3A" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Destor 10-21-2018 01:22 AM

Ff1 totally holds up

Same, I've been turned off Dragon Quest since the first one. Might give this a shot though

Opposite. I liked the mechanic being drastically different than "jump on this guy" or "run right and shoot". Even hybrid games like Crystalis, though one of my favorites, didn't quite scratch that turn-based itch. Final Fantasy and the NES port of Ultima Exodus easily ate at least one school year's worth of free time (until my dad got a lucky break in Ultima, which soured me on that game for a long while. He still thinks it's funny I got pissed).

However, I could have easily been on the same boat as you if Hydlide was my first one, which it almost was.

Destor 10-22-2018 10:49 AM

Turn based games was something I didnt enjoy initially but now its all I want to play.

Yeah it is, outside of a couple boss fights. I've read that if you like a challenge you should play it on hard. It seems that difficulty is tuned to what most people like us actually want. That would have been useful information before we started though, wouldn't it?

I've also read a little bit about these "draconian" settings that you can enable on subsequent playthroughs that really seem like they could make this game incredibly hard.

And yes Veronica is such a bitch and I love her as well. I also enjoy Sylvando because they went over the top with him. He's so flamboyant and his voice actor nails the role. I always get a good laugh from scenes he has a good amount of involvement in.

Sepholio 10-22-2018 04:56 PM

How far in are you Destor?

OssMan 10-22-2018 05:07 PM

Turn based games are something I grew up loving and now shrug at because the elements I like about them have mostly been swept aside.

Sepholio 10-22-2018 05:41 PM

That's why I particularly like the DQ games. They held onto the old school elements. This game would feel right at home in the 90's other than the fact it's prettier than those games.

Destor 10-22-2018 06:41 PM

@Seph

I just finished the MMA tourney

And yeah DQ11 is a classic JRPG in every sense. Really enjoyable. I was wish i had set the difficulty higher but the story and characters totally hold my attention. Im doing less encounters to keep my level low and its making for a better time

Destor 10-22-2018 06:42 PM

And Veronica is seriously one of my fav characters ever. I adore her so much

This is exactly what I did. I was grinding a little at first, now I just coast. When I go through an area I might fight one battle against each diff enemy type on the overworld. Now I occasionally run into stronger enemies that can be a bit troublesome and the bosses actually seem threatening. There are a couple that legit whooped me a few times. Then theres been some where it was a skin of my teeth win, out of MP and items and people dead and just manage to pull it off.

Sepholio 10-22-2018 08:22 PM

Man I cant wait for you to catch up a bit to where I'm at. There's this story event I want to talk about but obviously would be spoiling it for you. You'll know when it happens though. It's such a rare story beat for an RPG to take and they have some big shoes to fill in regards to the previous games that tried it.

Destor 10-22-2018 09:32 PM

Im slow going. 20 hrs in and its taken me a few weeks.

Sepholio 10-24-2018 11:39 AM

Indeed. I learned a valuable trick last night that may help you in your adventure. I'm sure you see how the skill unlock board works by now....but I found out that you can buy a bunch of panels to unlock some distant panel on the board, then refund all the points you spent to get to it at a priest while keeping the ability you wanted :o

Destor 10-24-2018 03:54 PM

Ive actually used that already! Plan to again when I switch from Great swords to dual wielding later

Sepholio 10-30-2018 06:08 AM

Act 2 is kinda strange in that the story is more free form. There is an order it should be done in and a little gating at times to stop you from going to certain places, but if you make it to somewhere that has a part in the story it will trigger the scenes and let you do it even if you havent done everything before it yet. It doesnt ryin anything as these situations are kind of independent from one another, but still, its odd.

I happened upon a boss a couple days ago thinking it was side content. It wrecked me though so I eventually left. Come to find out later that its actually a story boss from much later on and gives you an item you need. However if I had happened to already do it I could just progress immediately. Kinda strange to see that in an old school jrpg. But yeah, just know, if you run into something stupid hard just go elsewhere and progress other bits of the story first.

Destor 10-30-2018 08:18 AM

Is "act 2" collecting the spheres? Im past that if so

Sepholio 10-30-2018 09:25 AM

Nay. Act 2 starts after an extremely major plot event. You aren't there yet but you'll know. How many spheres do you have?

Destor 10-30-2018 10:21 AM

I didnt wanna spoil but im immediately after that. Back in Cobblestone.

Destor 10-30-2018 11:49 AM

ftr I think turning in the spheres and the Yggrasil is the close of act 2 tho...

Sepholio 10-30-2018 01:47 PM

The acts are broken up by when they make sidequests available, best I can tell. Before Yggdrasil the list only has 26, afterwards it changes and goes up to 47, and after another event later on it will go up again.

Destor 10-30-2018 02:10 PM

but writing structure dictates that

SPOILER: show
act 1: positive. Act 2: positive Act 3: negative = Tragedy

act 1: positive. Act 2: negative Act 3: positive = comedy (literary sense)

So based off the events of Yggdrasil I have to say that that was the conclusion of act 2.

Destor 11-03-2018 07:43 PM

This game keeps getting better by large amounts

Sepholio 11-03-2018 08:06 PM

Yeah I for sure enjoy it. Especially some of the stuff the second tier skills some characters have lets you do.

Sepholio 11-03-2018 08:07 PM

I have finally reached a boss I can't beat either. Well, I could, but only a couple people will survive and I want that experience haha. Gotta grind I spose. Getting close to the end I think, regardless.

Sepholio 11-03-2018 08:08 PM

Grinding is super easy though with the electro-light and hallelujah pep powers.

Destor 11-03-2018 08:09 PM

The story and the characters have really grown on me and being underleveled has made the game more tactical. Im 55ish hours in and its so good. Still wish it was tougher but its good all the same.

Destor 11-03-2018 08:09 PM

Lvl40 or so

Destor 11-04-2018 01:36 AM

Veronica

Sepholio 11-05-2018 12:42 AM

LOLOL I was waiting for you to get there.

Destor 11-05-2018 01:18 AM

Just beat it. Im aware there's story post game content so im gonna wrap that up before i move on to the next game.

Really enjoying this.

Sepholio 11-05-2018 02:01 AM

Yeah its pretty great. I just wish it had the monster battle arena from part 8. That was the mostest amount of fun.

Destor 11-05-2018 02:54 AM

There's an arena in Angri-La. Prob not the same but its fun

Sepholio 11-05-2018 07:14 AM

Nowhere near the same lol. In 8 you could capture any monster in the game. They were all ranked and had stats, you could hold a set number in your group at any time, and you use your collected monstwrs to create teams of 3. You then pit your team against other teams of monsters in the arena. It is AI controlled, so you have to worry about monster moves and stats and how well they work together. Was good stuff.

If I caught a brickman, a stoneman and a goldman and put them on a team together, for instance, they go completely off the rails and fuse together into a giant super monster named mazer. Little, touches like that made it epic.

Destor 11-09-2018 12:54 AM

Post game is 100% worth it. Mind boggling that it was post game tbh.

Destor 11-09-2018 01:47 AM

Reflecting on this game. It was very very good.

Destor 11-09-2018 01:48 AM

Final fight i was a tad over leveled for and it still had me nervous a 3 or 4 times.

Destor 11-09-2018 01:49 AM

Didnt bother with completion but true ending is a lot like octopath and persona 4. You haven't closed the story out if you dont do true ending. Its a must.

Sepholio 11-09-2018 01:41 PM

Yeah I'm trying to tie up a couple more things in the post game then I am done. I love the set up for it though. And it definitely seems like it should have been part of the main story considering they alluded to it during the main game.

Destor 11-09-2018 01:47 PM

The reality is the first credits are a part of the story. Thats some of the games brilliance.

SPOILER: show
its basically a gag that the "post game" is post game. Roll credits. Go back in time. FInish the game. True credits roll. Fucking brilliant

Sepholio 11-15-2018 10:12 PM

Man if you ever decide to revisit this game some of the events in the post game are excellent. There are a number of untracked/unmarked quests, usually revolving around going back to visit people who you did things for in the second part of the story. It's amazing how fate finds a way to bring people together anyways even if circumstances are completely different.

There are also a series of extremely tough bosses at the end of the various trials in the "bonus" dungeon. I wouldn't say they are true super bosses, but each one is far tougher than anything you've faced before them other than I am assuming the last boss. Although the last 2 bosses in the sequence are tougher than that, I'm sure. Completing all the challenges at angri-la is also pretty hard, I'm trying the last one atm and it is brutal. There is honestly quite a lot to do post game and most of it is pretty good stuff.

Destor 11-16-2018 12:04 AM

I finished the bonus dungeon. Not half as hard as the true boss imo

Destor 11-16-2018 12:05 AM

I finished at lvl 85

Sepholio 11-16-2018 03:05 AM

Ah indeed. I chose not to chase levels to maintain a challenge. I level up if I absolute have to lol. I haven't beaten the 4th boss in the bonus dungeon yet myself. My equipment game is a bit slack for this point for my level though lol, need to upgrade a few more things.

Destor 11-16-2018 10:06 AM

I didnt start leveling until I was prepping for the final boss. I was told minimun was 65 but that was brutally hard. &0 was "fair enough."

Once I got into post game I started an XP farm strat but didnt go out of my way for it.

Ran Slyvando, Eric and Jade with the Hero.

Once any got pepped I would tag them out.

Once Eric Jade and hero got pepped cast Hallelujah

Then get Sylvando pepped and jade re-pepped in the same battle

Hero had the skill that let him enter pep at will

Cast Electro light and tag eric back in if he isnt already

Use Critical claim with Eric and Thunder Thrust with jade

Profit

Then get them all back in your party and continue on until Eric and Jade are pepped at the same time again, then repeat

Destor 11-16-2018 10:07 AM

allowed me to use the post game to reach a level that could do the final boss with out bashing my head against the wall.

He still took some thought and strategy but not rage inducing.

Destor 11-16-2018 10:07 AM

I went into the post game at 45 or so.

Sepholio 11-16-2018 03:02 PM

Yea, I was maybe a couple levels higher than that when I went into post game. I'm around 65ish now. Have only done the electro-light trick that you are talking about a couple times so far, just when the conditions were met organically during a battle.

Erik becomes extremely OP at higher levels. Divide is sick. Cobra Strike>Divide>Victimizer or Divide>Critical Claim. Hell, dual wielding boomerangs, divide>twomerang. LOL he is just a dastardly bastard in the late game.

Destor 11-16-2018 03:10 PM

He wasnt in my final party because Veronica and Hero were my DPS but yeah he's very OP

Ruien 12-22-2018 11:39 AM

5 hours in so far. Lovely story. Combat is simple but I guess it could become more complex the farther I get into the game. The 3 additional characters I have so far all play their part perfectly too.

Great game so far.

Ruien 12-22-2018 11:41 AM

Loved it so much that Veronica only gave a shit about her magic and not about looking like a kid. So wonderful. She just wants to burn fuckers down.

Ruien 12-28-2018 07:55 PM

Have my full party now. Everyone is about level 26. Combat seems easy still but my last boss fight was a slight slight slight intimidating during combat. One of my party members almost died once. Was against some huge squid on the boat.

Wish there was a level recommendation so I would know if I am over leveled.

Ruien 12-30-2018 10:25 AM

SPOILER: show
Into Act 2. Hendrick acting like a bitch. Hes not even going to apologize huh. Asshole.

Only have like 2 days left before I can't play again for a month. :'(

Ruien 12-30-2018 10:27 AM

In the battle outside Cobblestone there was a soldier who was like 'Thes3 monsters are tough. If you need help go to the healing spring' or some crap like that. The monsters were hitting me for a whopping like 2 to 10 hp lol.

Ruien 12-31-2018 11:21 AM

Hendricks is the worst character by far. So 1 dimensional and boring. Usually I love the knight type of person like Olderic or whatever his name was in OCTOPATH (He was my favorite). But arg. Gtfo Hendrik.

Ruien 12-31-2018 07:53 PM

SPOILER: show
OH WTF. THEY KILLED OFF VERONICA AND GAVE ME THIS FUCKING HENRICKS GUY. Fuck this game.

Ruien 12-31-2018 08:24 PM

Well, tried to beat this game in 2 weeks. Didnt happen. Guesss I will pick it up again next month :(.

God I became so hooked over the past 3 days too.

Ruien 03-10-2019 12:42 AM

Finished the game. 10 out of 10. Pretty sure 8 over leveled since the last boss fight was fairly east but whatever. Still an amazing game. Loved everything about it.

Thinking about going back and playing some other dragonquest games now.

Destor 10-03-2019 03:22 PM

This thread needs more posts Mantis

Ultra Mantis 10-03-2019 03:29 PM

I know but Ruien didn't mark his spoilers and I read them earlier in the year, while it's been long enough for me to forget the specifics I don't want to read it again by accident when I'm ranting about bullshit bosses :'(

Destor 10-03-2019 03:35 PM

Hmmmm...lemme see if i can fix this

Destor 10-03-2019 04:36 PM

Fixed

Ruien 10-03-2019 05:52 PM

Sorry :(

Ultra Mantis 10-03-2019 06:12 PM

Nice one, Destor.

It's okay Ruien, I didnt know any of the characters names when I read it so I didnt retain some of the vital information. I guess it was really only half spoiled for me.

Ultra Mantis 10-03-2019 06:19 PM

While I'm here though, I am getting so annoyed with those little owl ghosts being absocutely everywhere I turn. What are you!? Why are you so adorable!?

I hope they give me some info on those things soon, they're driving me nuts.

Destor 10-03-2019 06:25 PM

I like when theyre just sitting on a bench chilling. Being cute.

Ultra Mantis 10-03-2019 06:46 PM

I'm half expecting it to turn out that it's just been the same one following me around everywhere and it's actually the dark spawn that will destroy everything. But then I wont even be mad at it because it's so adorable.

Ultra Mantis 10-04-2019 08:51 AM

Yggdrasil

SPOILER: show
Damn, things went full World of Ruin. Kefkaesque. I died at the next boss because I got mob focused and was struggling to manage my MP. It's not a particularly hard boss... but I'd spent 20 minutes beating every mob on the battlefield beforehand. Decided to invest all my returned points into attack boosts and smashed him easily.

Still dont trust the King, that dudes eyes are legitimately untrustworthy.

I hope Jade comes back soon. And where did the owls go!?!?!?!

Ultra Mantis 10-07-2019 06:49 PM

I guess the owls were only missing for that one location because they are EVERYWHERE again. What are you??? How can I understand you???

Sepholio 10-07-2019 07:46 PM

Do you mean the little blue guys or whatever? You'll see them walking sometimes and they disappear occasionally?

Ultra Mantis 10-07-2019 07:54 PM

Yeah, same things as the little guy who was the focus of the opening movie.

Sepholio 10-07-2019 08:03 PM

ah, well, nothing spoiler related, but if you follow the ones that walk around and disappear a lot of times they are trying to lead you in the direction of a treasure or something. The ones that are just sitting in places are often times very near treasure as well.

Ultra Mantis 10-08-2019 12:11 PM

Oh cool, I thought they were just stalking the Luminary

Another thing I like is that some (maybe all? I'm not sure) monster's have overkill death animations and I love all the detail they've put into the game. The Cruelcumber type enemies fall back and accidently impale themselves with their own spears, it's so extra it brings a smile to my face every single time.

Destor 10-08-2019 12:20 PM

The kill animations are so stinking cute. Game has so much charm

Ultra Mantis 10-11-2019 07:50 AM

Eric's act 2 boss squashed me in three turns so I decided to go exploring. Stumbled upon a very interesting scene in Gallopolis. I know I'm not supposed to be here yet but...

SPOILER: show
Gublet saw a Solid Ghost Owl on Rab's head and its purple and has tentacles and you can see its heart and I am close to answers!

Guess I'll see if I can find some Liquid Metals and get back on the path as quick as I can.

Sepholio 10-11-2019 01:43 PM

Spoiler tag because I'm not sure who all you have in your party r/n, can't remember if you have everyone at the point you are at. But it's in reference to a tactic for metal slime farming.

SPOILER: show
Put Hero, Jade, Sylvando and Rab in your party. Have all at full pep. Start battle. Have Hero/Jade/Sylvando cast the triple pep power "electro light". Will replace all enemies on the field with various metal slimes. If you luck up and get a King variant, use Rab and use pep power Dirge of Dundrasil, which guarantees it goes to sleep. In lieu of Rab you can also use Erik and Critical Claim ability to insta-kill one of the slimes. You know what to do from there.

Ultra Mantis 10-11-2019 04:18 PM

I'm missing two but I have all those guys. Oh nice, I forgot all about that pep ability, used it once by chance in act 1 to see what it did and was like "oh that's really useful".

Destor 10-11-2019 10:21 PM

If youre pep xp farming once someone becomes pepped that you need to cast a pep skill just tag them out until all characters needed are pepped and ready

Ultra Mantis 10-12-2019 07:08 AM

Oh yeah, I found that one out the hard way when Dora went 10-0 on me. Might still need a little bit of luck though since I dont have the full set of reserves. I know Hero has a pep on demand spell for himself so I guess I can always respec him if I have to.

Is Electro Light better to cast on large groups of enemies? Does the level of what you use it against factor in, or is it all just RNG?

Destor 10-12-2019 06:21 PM

Your level determines the level of the slime...no clue about how many though...

Ultra Mantis 10-12-2019 07:27 PM

Yeah It seemed to give me one Vicious Liquid and 2 Vicious Metals no matter what I used it on, apart from when it failed and sent out shitty robots.

Arboria 2nd Visit:

SPOILER: show

Damn, I mean I accidentally read the spoiler and I knew somebody was dying at some point but she doesn't even get to rejoin the party? Cold. At least Serena is sort of useful now I guess? And she's doing the old Princess Garnet dramatic knife haircut gimmick. It kind of clicked for me that it would be Veronica not only after the weird conversation about dying she had with Serena at the end of act 1, but when Memory Loss Eric is being all apologetic Sylv straight up says "If Veronica could see this she would DIE". Hilariously blunt.

I'm actually expecting Veronica to somehow come back, if only because she's in the opening video in her adult body. Maybe part of her soul is still trapped in a jar somewhere. Wouldn't surprise me if she made a Horcrux :shifty:

So then we get a Giant whale airship and go meet a Tellytubby in a floating temple and this game is so weird it's great. I went exploring and found as island FULL of owl ghosts, kinda spooky but also kind of the best location in the game. Gonna hurry over to Gallopolis and see how that little thread pans out.

Also met a bard called Luter Van Boss

Destor 10-12-2019 07:51 PM

SPOILER: show
Veronica :'(

Ultra Mantis 10-14-2019 03:38 PM

SPOILER: show
They hit all the beats just right on that death though, completely unexpected and not just done for shock value, at a point where you're so happy to finally have everyone back. If Serena had died I don't think it would have had as much impact either, Veronica left a big impression.

Gallopolis / Hotto was super short (and gave me even more questions about my ghostly owl boys) so I've been fighting my way up to Mordegon. One Winged Jaspar is a real motherfucker, going to have to grind out a few more levels I think and maybe get some better gear. Currently have Gublet (Hero) 55, Everyone else 54-53, Serena 51. Sylv's usefulness has really dropped off for me, which is a shame. He's a status & buffs master but he's not really got anything in his kit useful enough to keep his spot over Serena. Erik's really strong for like one hit every fight and Henrik's dps is tragic. Need to get the Omni Heal (I think?) skill for Luminary and figure out some dark mitigation at the very least.

I'm been using Greatswords instead of swords though since the very first Heliodor sequence. Is Sword of Light worth a respec for these last battles, or is it better to use it as an item?

Destor 10-14-2019 04:37 PM

I used great swords from start to finish. Cant really say. Serena is def MVP for the most part. Veronica was my AoE dps though. What a nuker that one was. Rapp is a poor substitute but i will say tagging your party in and on mid battle does make sylvando much more useful.

Ultra Mantis 10-16-2019 07:49 AM

115 hrs, Lv66, Harder monsters mode CLEARED. But it's not over yet... so many unanswered questions and the thing I love about this being an old school RPG is that I know they're not DLC or sequel bait.

SPOILER: show
The locked doors everywhere, that weird evil medallion in the ruins if Zwaarthurst (sp?), what was Erdicks Lantern?, the sapling ygdrasil roots, the books Gublet was not "ready" to read. Most important of all, what are those goddamn adorable owl ghost creatures up to!?!?!
