Dragon Quest 11
Any hype on TPWW for this? Drops next Tuesday.
I have never played a mainline Dragon Quest, but I have heard good things about them. Not really top level "hype" because I know absolutely nothing about the franchise and especially this particular entry, but I was interested enough to put it on my amazon wishlist in May. I have my eye on it.
I preordered it. Friend who lives in JPN said this was a top of the line series there so I'll def be playing soonish. Prob around early winter.
Yeah, currently have Nier Automata, Ni No Kuni 2, Witcher 3, Nioh, Breath of the Wild and Persona 5 NG+ queued up so that might be my 2018 schedule filled.
I've definitely heard it mentioned as the top JRPG series but I think only one of them was ever released on home console outside of Japan before this. I know there have been DS ports but I'm not much of a handheld guy. Seph said he was looking forward to this one more than Octopath so going to assume he will be all over this if he ever made it through the gate. |
I feel like he was consumed never to be seen again :'(
Seph's business trip was actually touring with a troupe of travelling actors in a quest to track down his missing father :'(
Lyblac wins again :(
Forgot i made this.
Veronica is the sassiest character of all time and i love her. Game is painfully easy though. |
When I was 5 or 6 years old, one of the first games I got for the NES was Dragon Warrior. It turned me of so much, I didn't play another RPG again until Final Fantasy 7.
Yeah early rpgs werent the best. FF2 and FF3 are some of the worst games ever made.
FF1 was really great for it's time. Still fun to run through it today. Prefer the GBA version though. Some great sprite art there. Specifically for the four fiends.
Also, I wouldn't say FF3 was bad. Hard as balls, and has issues that certainly don't make it any easier, but I wouldn't put it in the same group as FF2.
That said, you couldn't pay me to go through that final dungeon again. |
Also, ff3 had this

Ff1 totally holds up

However, I could have easily been on the same boat as you if Hydlide was my first one, which it almost was. |
Turn based games was something I didnt enjoy initially but now its all I want to play.

I've also read a little bit about these "draconian" settings that you can enable on subsequent playthroughs that really seem like they could make this game incredibly hard. And yes Veronica is such a bitch and I love her as well. I also enjoy Sylvando because they went over the top with him. He's so flamboyant and his voice actor nails the role. I always get a good laugh from scenes he has a good amount of involvement in. |
How far in are you Destor?
Turn based games are something I grew up loving and now shrug at because the elements I like about them have mostly been swept aside.
That's why I particularly like the DQ games. They held onto the old school elements. This game would feel right at home in the 90's other than the fact it's prettier than those games.
@Seph
I just finished the MMA tourney And yeah DQ11 is a classic JRPG in every sense. Really enjoyable. I was wish i had set the difficulty higher but the story and characters totally hold my attention. Im doing less encounters to keep my level low and its making for a better time |
And Veronica is seriously one of my fav characters ever. I adore her so much

Man I cant wait for you to catch up a bit to where I'm at. There's this story event I want to talk about but obviously would be spoiling it for you. You'll know when it happens though. It's such a rare story beat for an RPG to take and they have some big shoes to fill in regards to the previous games that tried it.
Im slow going. 20 hrs in and its taken me a few weeks.
Indeed. I learned a valuable trick last night that may help you in your adventure. I'm sure you see how the skill unlock board works by now....but I found out that you can buy a bunch of panels to unlock some distant panel on the board, then refund all the points you spent to get to it at a priest while keeping the ability you wanted :o
Ive actually used that already! Plan to again when I switch from Great swords to dual wielding later
Act 2 is kinda strange in that the story is more free form. There is an order it should be done in and a little gating at times to stop you from going to certain places, but if you make it to somewhere that has a part in the story it will trigger the scenes and let you do it even if you havent done everything before it yet. It doesnt ryin anything as these situations are kind of independent from one another, but still, its odd.
I happened upon a boss a couple days ago thinking it was side content. It wrecked me though so I eventually left. Come to find out later that its actually a story boss from much later on and gives you an item you need. However if I had happened to already do it I could just progress immediately. Kinda strange to see that in an old school jrpg. But yeah, just know, if you run into something stupid hard just go elsewhere and progress other bits of the story first. |
Is "act 2" collecting the spheres? Im past that if so
Nay. Act 2 starts after an extremely major plot event. You aren't there yet but you'll know. How many spheres do you have?
I didnt wanna spoil but im immediately after that. Back in Cobblestone.
ftr I think turning in the spheres and the Yggrasil is the close of act 2 tho...
The acts are broken up by when they make sidequests available, best I can tell. Before Yggdrasil the list only has 26, afterwards it changes and goes up to 47, and after another event later on it will go up again.
but writing structure dictates that
SPOILER: show So based off the events of Yggdrasil I have to say that that was the conclusion of act 2. |
This game keeps getting better by large amounts
Yeah I for sure enjoy it. Especially some of the stuff the second tier skills some characters have lets you do.
I have finally reached a boss I can't beat either. Well, I could, but only a couple people will survive and I want that experience haha. Gotta grind I spose. Getting close to the end I think, regardless.
Grinding is super easy though with the electro-light and hallelujah pep powers.
The story and the characters have really grown on me and being underleveled has made the game more tactical. Im 55ish hours in and its so good. Still wish it was tougher but its good all the same.
Lvl40 or so
SPOILER: show |
LOLOL I was waiting for you to get there.
Just beat it. Im aware there's story post game content so im gonna wrap that up before i move on to the next game.
Really enjoying this. |
Yeah its pretty great. I just wish it had the monster battle arena from part 8. That was the mostest amount of fun.
There's an arena in Angri-La. Prob not the same but its fun
Nowhere near the same lol. In 8 you could capture any monster in the game. They were all ranked and had stats, you could hold a set number in your group at any time, and you use your collected monstwrs to create teams of 3. You then pit your team against other teams of monsters in the arena. It is AI controlled, so you have to worry about monster moves and stats and how well they work together. Was good stuff.
If I caught a brickman, a stoneman and a goldman and put them on a team together, for instance, they go completely off the rails and fuse together into a giant super monster named mazer. Little, touches like that made it epic. |
Post game is 100% worth it. Mind boggling that it was post game tbh.
Reflecting on this game. It was very very good.
Final fight i was a tad over leveled for and it still had me nervous a 3 or 4 times.
Didnt bother with completion but true ending is a lot like octopath and persona 4. You haven't closed the story out if you dont do true ending. Its a must.
Yeah I'm trying to tie up a couple more things in the post game then I am done. I love the set up for it though. And it definitely seems like it should have been part of the main story considering they alluded to it during the main game.
The reality is the first credits are a part of the story. Thats some of the games brilliance.
SPOILER: show |
Man if you ever decide to revisit this game some of the events in the post game are excellent. There are a number of untracked/unmarked quests, usually revolving around going back to visit people who you did things for in the second part of the story. It's amazing how fate finds a way to bring people together anyways even if circumstances are completely different.
There are also a series of extremely tough bosses at the end of the various trials in the "bonus" dungeon. I wouldn't say they are true super bosses, but each one is far tougher than anything you've faced before them other than I am assuming the last boss. Although the last 2 bosses in the sequence are tougher than that, I'm sure. Completing all the challenges at angri-la is also pretty hard, I'm trying the last one atm and it is brutal. There is honestly quite a lot to do post game and most of it is pretty good stuff. |
I finished the bonus dungeon. Not half as hard as the true boss imo
I finished at lvl 85
Ah indeed. I chose not to chase levels to maintain a challenge. I level up if I absolute have to lol. I haven't beaten the 4th boss in the bonus dungeon yet myself. My equipment game is a bit slack for this point for my level though lol, need to upgrade a few more things.
I didnt start leveling until I was prepping for the final boss. I was told minimun was 65 but that was brutally hard. &0 was "fair enough."
Once I got into post game I started an XP farm strat but didnt go out of my way for it. Ran Slyvando, Eric and Jade with the Hero. Once any got pepped I would tag them out. Once Eric Jade and hero got pepped cast Hallelujah Then get Sylvando pepped and jade re-pepped in the same battle Hero had the skill that let him enter pep at will Cast Electro light and tag eric back in if he isnt already Use Critical claim with Eric and Thunder Thrust with jade Profit Then get them all back in your party and continue on until Eric and Jade are pepped at the same time again, then repeat |
allowed me to use the post game to reach a level that could do the final boss with out bashing my head against the wall.
He still took some thought and strategy but not rage inducing. |
I went into the post game at 45 or so.
Yea, I was maybe a couple levels higher than that when I went into post game. I'm around 65ish now. Have only done the electro-light trick that you are talking about a couple times so far, just when the conditions were met organically during a battle.
Erik becomes extremely OP at higher levels. Divide is sick. Cobra Strike>Divide>Victimizer or Divide>Critical Claim. Hell, dual wielding boomerangs, divide>twomerang. LOL he is just a dastardly bastard in the late game. |
He wasnt in my final party because Veronica and Hero were my DPS but yeah he's very OP
5 hours in so far. Lovely story. Combat is simple but I guess it could become more complex the farther I get into the game. The 3 additional characters I have so far all play their part perfectly too.
Great game so far. |
Loved it so much that Veronica only gave a shit about her magic and not about looking like a kid. So wonderful. She just wants to burn fuckers down.
Have my full party now. Everyone is about level 26. Combat seems easy still but my last boss fight was a slight slight slight intimidating during combat. One of my party members almost died once. Was against some huge squid on the boat.
Wish there was a level recommendation so I would know if I am over leveled. |
In the battle outside Cobblestone there was a soldier who was like 'Thes3 monsters are tough. If you need help go to the healing spring' or some crap like that. The monsters were hitting me for a whopping like 2 to 10 hp lol.
Hendricks is the worst character by far. So 1 dimensional and boring. Usually I love the knight type of person like Olderic or whatever his name was in OCTOPATH (He was my favorite). But arg. Gtfo Hendrik.
SPOILER: show |
Well, tried to beat this game in 2 weeks. Didnt happen. Guesss I will pick it up again next month :(.
God I became so hooked over the past 3 days too. |
Finished the game. 10 out of 10. Pretty sure 8 over leveled since the last boss fight was fairly east but whatever. Still an amazing game. Loved everything about it.
Thinking about going back and playing some other dragonquest games now. |
This thread needs more posts Mantis
I know but Ruien didn't mark his spoilers and I read them earlier in the year, while it's been long enough for me to forget the specifics I don't want to read it again by accident when I'm ranting about bullshit bosses :'(
Hmmmm...lemme see if i can fix this
Fixed
Sorry :(
Nice one, Destor.
It's okay Ruien, I didnt know any of the characters names when I read it so I didnt retain some of the vital information. I guess it was really only half spoiled for me. |
While I'm here though, I am getting so annoyed with those little owl ghosts being absocutely everywhere I turn. What are you!? Why are you so adorable!?
I hope they give me some info on those things soon, they're driving me nuts. |
I like when theyre just sitting on a bench chilling. Being cute.
I'm half expecting it to turn out that it's just been the same one following me around everywhere and it's actually the dark spawn that will destroy everything. But then I wont even be mad at it because it's so adorable.
I guess the owls were only missing for that one location because they are EVERYWHERE again. What are you??? How can I understand you???
Do you mean the little blue guys or whatever? You'll see them walking sometimes and they disappear occasionally?
Yeah, same things as the little guy who was the focus of the opening movie.
ah, well, nothing spoiler related, but if you follow the ones that walk around and disappear a lot of times they are trying to lead you in the direction of a treasure or something. The ones that are just sitting in places are often times very near treasure as well.
Oh cool, I thought they were just stalking the Luminary
Another thing I like is that some (maybe all? I'm not sure) monster's have overkill death animations and I love all the detail they've put into the game. The Cruelcumber type enemies fall back and accidently impale themselves with their own spears, it's so extra it brings a smile to my face every single time. |
The kill animations are so stinking cute. Game has so much charm
Eric's act 2 boss squashed me in three turns so I decided to go exploring. Stumbled upon a very interesting scene in Gallopolis. I know I'm not supposed to be here yet but...
SPOILER: show Guess I'll see if I can find some Liquid Metals and get back on the path as quick as I can. |
Spoiler tag because I'm not sure who all you have in your party r/n, can't remember if you have everyone at the point you are at. But it's in reference to a tactic for metal slime farming.
SPOILER: show |
I'm missing two but I have all those guys. Oh nice, I forgot all about that pep ability, used it once by chance in act 1 to see what it did and was like "oh that's really useful".
If youre pep xp farming once someone becomes pepped that you need to cast a pep skill just tag them out until all characters needed are pepped and ready
Oh yeah, I found that one out the hard way when Dora went 10-0 on me. Might still need a little bit of luck though since I dont have the full set of reserves. I know Hero has a pep on demand spell for himself so I guess I can always respec him if I have to.
Is Electro Light better to cast on large groups of enemies? Does the level of what you use it against factor in, or is it all just RNG? |
Your level determines the level of the slime...no clue about how many though...
Yeah It seemed to give me one Vicious Liquid and 2 Vicious Metals no matter what I used it on, apart from when it failed and sent out shitty robots.
Arboria 2nd Visit: SPOILER: show |
SPOILER: show |
SPOILER: show |
I used great swords from start to finish. Cant really say. Serena is def MVP for the most part. Veronica was my AoE dps though. What a nuker that one was. Rapp is a poor substitute but i will say tagging your party in and on mid battle does make sylvando much more useful.
115 hrs, Lv66, Harder monsters mode CLEARED. But it's not over yet... so many unanswered questions and the thing I love about this being an old school RPG is that I know they're not DLC or sequel bait.
SPOILER: show |
