Haunting of Hill House
Just watched the first episode on Netflix. Seems really good. Does a great job building tension. Does more with what it doesn't show than from what it does. Sign of good horror. And what it does show you is pretty fucking unnerving.
Been waiting for genuinely good horror series. American Horror Story has never done it for me. It's okay, just never really spooked me or creeped me out. This does a much better job of that. |
Some of the CG they use is god awful though. oof.
|
Watched the first two episodes; it has me intrigued, and I will continue watching it.
|
I watched the first three eps and am hooked
|
sounds like a ABT movie.
|
YOU sound like an ABT movie.
Also nah. Terrible CGI kittens aside, show looks like it has a good budget. |
|
Watching 1st episode now.
|
You know what bugs me about these movies or tv shows. What modern family would live in places like these? None.. It's fucking stupid.
|
It's not their actual home. The husband and wife are renovators, and they are living on site with their kids for the summer while they do the job.
|
Wow. Just got done with ep3. Great episode. This is a pretty intelligent "horror".
It's like a spooky, "This is Us."...which I don't watch because of the feelz. |

SPOILER: show |
SPOILER: show |
next up, episode 4
|
Just finished episode 6
Really good, very tense |
|
I'm going to really need to suck in the youtube fan vids/comments in the next few days
|
I've tried to watch the first episode 3 times. I can't get through it. I don't get it. I keep hearing this is good so I've kept trying. Someone help.
|
I'll be watching the last episode tonight; epi 9 was so good, giving so many answers.
|
How scary is this on a scale of "baby shark do do dooo" to "OH GOD MAKE IT STOP WHY GOD WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY"? My son loves scary stuff and I may watch it with him leading up to Halloween but if it's too scary I don't want him to see it.
|
He'll be fine

It's a lot of set up but it does pay off. Once the show hits episode 3 things pickup big time. |
Can't read this thread yet. But I'm 3 eps deep in this and it's REALLY GOOD and I was LEGIT frightened by some scenes.

I'd say on a scale of 5 so far I've seen a moment that felt like a 4. But most of it is a family drama. The scares are scary especially if you were a kid who felt you lived in a haunted house. :'(:(:nono: |
I thought the finale was a bit of something and nothing; did not feel like a satisfactory ending. Overall, a good series let down by a poor last episode.

Finally made it past the pilot.
First episode is def the worst as slik said. Kept going back thinking I missed something because so much didn't make sense. Didn't realize that's kinda the show. Little bits here and there going back and forth in various time frames. Not the best way to start a show but I'm into it now. Just finished episode 6 (family at the funeral home) which was amazing, imo. Looking forward to more of the mystery being unraveled. It's horror, so I'm guessing we aren't getting an ending that ties everything up in a neat package but as long as we generally close the door on the family and their story at the end I'm ok with that. We shal see. |
The dumbwaiter scene was the scariest to me.
|
The siblings are so real. I guess the show took a toll on the actors, I read (not as bad as Heath Ledgar). I think I can relate a little bit with all of them...even Shirley & Steven.
|
Theo is my girl, though
The actress that plays Nell hasn't been in much but she's going to blow up with offers I was impressed with all the kid performances as well. Possibly a Stranger Things like surge for their young careers. |
Adult Theo is the director's wife. She's good but that's why she's there.
|
Yes, and he's got good taste
|
Fantastic. Ending was great.

Finally finished it. I enjoyed how it tied everything else we'd seen together and had a surprisingly uplifting finish.
I can't see them making a second season since the story is completely wrapped up. |
It would be great if each season adapted a different novel or short story.
|
Certainly one of the better shows put out by Netflix. Completed the season in three sittings along with a bottle of bourbon. It felt a bit emotionally draining at times but the characters were very compelling. Reflecting on the final episode a bit more than I should.

Going to start this tonight. After wasting 14 hours on Ascension and Stranger Things I really need a win here.
|
If it's good enough for Drebin after 3 false starts I will power through. It took me four times to actually watch The Abyss and I fucking love that film so fingers crossed.
|
You’ll probably hate it.
|
It’s good
|
I'm enjoying it. If the first episode really is the weakest then it bodes extremely well that I find the story, concept and acting all of a high standard. No big scares but a strong macabre tone and no allowance of settling the tone. Attractivel and uneasy, like a seasick supermodel.
|
The girl child was a bit shit for about thirty seconds but everything else has been grand.
|
Too much punishing misdirection already. It's using up my restraint. Shows that establish facts then attempt to have somebody subvert the issue are lazy.
Everything else is good. Not OK with idiots coming up with excuses when they have seen reality. Henry Thomas is dope. |
Adults telling lies/putting their shit on kids in TV shows is another real nightmare for me. Don't sit there and tell a kid that is apparently more intelligent than you that their dead cats are in a better place when in fact they are in a muddy place.
Also telling a kid to stare at their dead gran when they are clearly traumatised is an unbelievable act of gross misconduct from a fucking funeral director. Nobody is letting some mortician tell their child how to behave, not even in America. That funeral director is pish. The kid playing her is super too, a great wee actor. Now she grows up to be a fucking sociopath. |
Do you talk during movies and tv shows, Seanny?

Episodes 4 and 5(except for the torturous and never-ending sleep paralysis and spastic screaming fits) were good, much less annoying filler and the underlying character study held up well. This is a 7/10 show so far as perfectly highlighted by the one shit episode here and there. I expect episodes 7-10 to be excellent. Bad episodes are 2 and 3 so far but at least 3 wrung wildly between decent and crap.
The acting is all legit though. Only the little girl and the mortician woman stink up the place and the dialogue seems to take a fair whack of the blame there. The dialogue is off kilter too, mercurial even. I love the good bits and have to skip through the bad. Any time wasted on stating the obvious or deliberating known facts seems contrived purely to pad time. I'd have cut the time line shit and had a present day and past storyline running concurrently. Splitting the thing up is a stylistic choice that adds confusion where this story would never have had any in an honest presentation. The psychological horror is done brilliantly, even the outright jump scares are solid. There was no reason to piss about with the time hopping. |

That's a bit much. |
The girl twin in both timeliness and the adult mortician have undermined so many potentially great moments with their scene chewing it's clearly a stylistic choice by the director to have a mixture of camp and soulless for some reason.
The realism/naturalism of the rest takes a hit every time they show up. It's as though they belong in a different show, they completely throw the tone off. |
SPOILER: show |
Still better than Stranger Things
|
Whoever was in charge of maintaining continuity did not turn up for this show. Maybe they died. Maybe Hill House is Haunted by the ghost of a continuity monitor.
|

It isn't particularly scary at all. It's slightly jumpy and unnerving but by episode 4 it's basically revealed to be a daytime soap opera with the occasional ghost. It's as though someone saw Rose Red and decided to remake it with a family rather than a paranormal investigation team. |
The past time line is far more entertaining. I think the present time line should have been linear and a fuckload shorter. This should have been a tight 6 parter.
|
Recast adult Shirley, both Nell's and calm the rest of them down a bit. Two concurrent timeliness but the past would be the bigger portion.
Remove all trace of the kids growing up to be apathetic turds and infuse some gravitas. |
Keep Gugino in her nightie for the entire run
|
I just wrote a good show.
|
Oh here we go, it's about to pick up again.

LOL @ Young twins and Gugino convo in ep 9. Fucking ludicrous.
This show is so uneven. I can't believe I am up to 24 hours wasted on Netflix series that reeked immediately. |
Episode 9 is too little too late despite being very good. I think the continuity people made a lot of mistakes just in trying to keep the surprises coherent. There are real world implications to sticking your hand in an industrial fan and yet the continuity guy is busy making sure the threads that tie ghosts together to their human counterpart are as tight as possible.
I get mad at that stuff. |
Seanny gives it 6 outta 10 testicles
|
It would be 2/4 on my ratings scale but yeah it's a 6/10 in terms of quality episodes. It has been a frustrating ride because the bad episodes are littered among the early and middle episodes so it has no real run of form until the last 3/4 episodes and even then no episode is without some truly bad parts.
|
Essentially I find the embrace towards cheesiness or scene chewing very hard to handle. It reminds me of all of the bad Stephen King adaptations. The source material is there but the way it is presented is pathologically hit-or-miss.
Imagine if every second scene in the Wire had a guy with an actual bag of swag with a dollar sign on it and every second actor was Dominic West in season 5, biting bum's bum's with false teeth. |
Also it would have been nice to get some semblance of a resolution.
This thing ends in an almost pro-haunted house message. |
Quote:
Sadly you'll be right about this. That Nell was dreadful in both incarnations. I'm sure she can do much better than wonky teeth and spastic snotty crying with a nice side full of sleep paralysis. Her child actor was dog shit. COTTON CANDY |
The prose was so purple and so Godlessly un-poetic especially towards the end that I have huge reservations as to how it achieved it's outstanding IMDB score.
The dialogue undermined the performances, the time lines undermined the coherency and the daytime soap aspects completely ruined several episodes. Episode 6 had the worst acting from the adults, it was so painful at times. Nope, the past should have been bigger, the present should have been a mere fraction and the cunty behaviour between the family in the present should have been toned right down. It wasn't a horror show. That was 75% familial drama and 25% ghost story. I could have done with knowing that from the get go. |
Season 2 confirmed
The Haunting of Bly Manor. Not sure how I feel about this... The Others was loosely based off what this also is based on. |
Interesting
