Umbrella Academy

This appeared on Netflix today so instead of taking my lumps from Ascension, Stranger Things and Hill House and quitting Netflix entirely, I jumped headfirst into this.

Two episodes in I'm laughing a lot in both a straightforward and "what the fuck" way. I have no idea what the source material for this is but it must be nuts. I know it's a comic but beyond that nothing.

Great cast, solid mystery at the centre and a bounty of WTF laughs. It has a creeping darkness too. Bad things are imminent.

Klaus and Vanya are fantastic, I think Number 5 is class though.

Two episodes in and it's a treat so far.

Fignuts 02-15-2019 07:49 PM

It was written by the lead singer of My Chemical Romance.

So this is emo then?

Seanny One Ball 02-15-2019 07:54 PM

I don't know anything about that band. The guy from Kula Shaker makes films now too. Simon Pegg is in 'em.

Ellen Page wears a fuckload of denim in it

SPOILER: show
When you find out who Dolores is

ClockShot 02-15-2019 08:15 PM

#3 is hot.

Aside from that, finished episode 1. Like what I'm watching.

I'll keep chugging along.

Apparently you meant the graphic novel. The show is run by the Lethal Weapon Steve Blackman.

Seanny One Ball 02-15-2019 09:23 PM

Do not look at the wiki page for the show or the graphic novel, both contain big spoilers in the team member/cast info.

I just wanted to know a name and it ruined a surprise for me.

Seanny One Ball 02-15-2019 09:38 PM

This is absolutely hilarious.

Seanny One Ball 02-15-2019 10:56 PM

SPOILER: show
Half way through and I reckon Vanya will have powers and their emergence is the cause of the Apocalypse.

At the very least the first part of that statement will be true. There has been a bit of foreshadowing but it may be a red herring. If it is that's a great bluff.

Seanny One Ball 02-16-2019 12:31 PM

Episode 9 spoiler
SPOILER: show
Vanya saw the journal under the bed and read enough to know that Leonard was lying way before she found the journal in his bag and killed him... What the fuck is going on there? Did I miss something? Nobody is that deluded to ignore so many warning signs.

Seanny One Ball 02-16-2019 01:52 PM

Finished.

That is a fantastic show. It is rich with laughs of all kinds and yet maintains a very dark streak through it's entire run which gets much stronger towards the end.
It is jammed with outstanding characters, Klaus, The Boy, Vanya, Hazel and Cha-Cha... I was extremely taken with the chemistry between actors in this show. It was like The Borg, they all worked phenomenally together and it was written very slick.

I loved it.

rez 02-16-2019 04:16 PM

I'll have to check it out here in a bit

rez 02-16-2019 07:05 PM

Whoa...not what I was expecting.

Seanny One Ball 02-16-2019 07:49 PM

It is up front with the weirdness

Blonde Moment 02-16-2019 08:57 PM

Halfway through 3 and i am hooked

rez 02-16-2019 09:08 PM

Two episodes in. It def gives me Heroes (season 1, only) vibes.

Seanny One Ball 02-16-2019 10:06 PM

I resisted the urge to say that exact thing because I didn't want to jinx it. You're right though, it's like a funnier Heroes season 1.

RP 02-17-2019 01:07 AM

I dont know if i'll watch this. I cant stand Ellen Page. There might not be a single actress I hate more then Ellen Page.

You only say that because you saw them in Reindeer Games. She's a shit actress

Lock Jaw 02-22-2019 10:32 PM

Watched the first episode and enjoyed it..... only planned on watching the one tonight, but am about to play the second episode anyways....

Seanny One Ball 02-22-2019 10:41 PM

I like how there are only three or four fairly well known actors in it and yet everybody feels so familiar and right for the role. It really lets the character speak for itself when you aren't preoccupied with the actor's profile. Genuinely perfect casting.

Seanny One Ball 02-22-2019 10:48 PM

Would like to know which character/s strike/s you as enjoyable. I think you'll be a fan of The Boy, he has a complicated relationship with the opposite sex.

Lock Jaw 02-22-2019 11:34 PM

I like Five so far.... and Klaus.... talking monkey butlers are alwyas cool as well..... Ellen Page seems too "emo" right now.....

Everyone is enjoyable so far though....

No one named The Boy yet....

Seanny One Ball 02-22-2019 11:54 PM

Five = The Boy

Ruien 02-25-2019 06:35 PM

Two episodes in. Love Diego fucking people up.

Seanny One Ball 02-25-2019 06:53 PM

Diego is great, he's the one that straight away you want to follow.
SPOILER: show
Luther/Space Boy fails time after time, makes dreadful decisions and seems to hold them back more than anything. I guess that's a fairly ham fisted indictment against the philosophy he was raised with but it works. I quite like the big lug.

RP 03-02-2019 04:53 PM

I'm 4 episodes in. I dont know what the point is, but i'm somewhat interested. I swear every single scene with Ellen Page is bringing this show down. It's the worst casting ever. She is boring, her scenes are boring. OMG it's fucking terrible so far.

Seanny One Ball 03-02-2019 04:58 PM

You should probably stop now then because she's in it for the duration and takes up a generous amount of screen time.

RP 03-02-2019 05:17 PM

The entire show slows down when she comes on the screen. It's crazy!

RP 03-02-2019 05:21 PM

There was a scene where they all were dancing and when Ellen Paige was dancing, i lost life.

RP 03-02-2019 05:26 PM

Ellen Paige = Lifeless. I cant watch this show anymore. She is fucking terrible.

RP 03-02-2019 05:27 PM

Pound for pound Ellen Paige is the worst actress/actor ever.

Seanny One Ball 03-02-2019 06:45 PM

She's unparalleled as an actress, especially with the roles she takes. I think she's one of the most likeable people I have ever seen.

I'll tell you who I hate - Sally Hawkins.

Fuck off Hawkins.

Damian Rey 2.0 03-06-2019 01:21 AM

Just finished. Loved it. Thought Ellen Page was brilliant, and RP needs reevaluate his life choices. Diego was an easy draw, but Klaus was the guy I found myself most interested in.

Are we getting a second season? I'd love one but hard to imagine where they go after this.

Seanny One Ball 03-06-2019 04:02 AM

Klaus' story takes such major turn at one point that the concept itself had me wide eyed in admiration. I think the guy Sheehan that played him did something special with an incredibly interesting character. Perhaps that role could have been so one dimensionally funny in the wrong hands as to detract from the depth of what the poor bastard goes through but I really marked out for Klaus.

Danny Electric 03-06-2019 08:16 AM

Sheehan is great in this , was brilliant in Misfits too.

Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would , I once had a first edition of the first comic somewhere, probably hidden in a lot of other stuff.

I definitely think the end of it leads in to a second series , without giving anything away.

Damian Rey 2.0 03-06-2019 10:53 AM

Agreed. He easily had the most interesting and dramatic turn of events as the show went on, and was the most empathetic. The actor in the role did a helluva job.

Seanny One Ball 03-06-2019 11:11 AM

How did you like Hazel and Cha Cha? I thought Hazel's story was awesome. I wasn't expecting about 90% of that show to happen.

Damian Rey 2.0 03-06-2019 01:02 PM

I loved them both. Hazel was so damn likeable. And of course there was his love story with Agnes, which was so damn sweet.

I loved the dynamic between the two. Cha-Cha being devoted to nothing but the job and only that job. Hazel seemingly doing it cuz he was good at it, but wanted more. And his constant bitching about pay and benefits lol. Loved those little things. The end, knowing what happened to him, saddened me.

Seanny One Ball 03-06-2019 03:27 PM

SPOILER: show
Doesn't Hazel escape with Agnes in the end?

Danny Electric 03-06-2019 03:55 PM

The guy who plays Hazel is awesome in Mindhunter.

Please spoiler tag that post Damian.

Seanny One Ball 03-06-2019 04:54 PM

SPOILER: show
Hazel and Agnes are standing staring at each other at 44:20 of the final episode. Put the subtitles on and the description says "Briefcase whooshes, zaps" just as the background Armageddon rolls in and then there's a blue flash and they both disappear before the landscape is enveloped.

When you're good you'd better be damned fucking good.

How do you like it so far?

Lock Jaw 03-07-2019 01:00 AM

Really enjoying it

SPOILER: show
Like the twist with Klaus and his time travel experience...

I saw the twist with Vanya having powers coming a mile away, though...

Really like Hazel and Cha Cha as Seanny predicted I would

Frank Drebin 03-07-2019 06:29 AM

Liked it too. Really good stuff here.

I dunno about the actor who played Klaus though. Feel like that's the generic representation of a drug addict they would teach in Acting 101. No real nuance to that character until his turn which took a while.

Hazel and Cha-Cha really shine for me in this acting wise. Same for Luther. Not an Ellen Page fan but I don't think her acting ruins anything. Just never adds much to it.

Story wise there are a a couple of things they gloss over and never explain (monkey butler) or are just plain plot holes but when it was good it was really good.

Seanny One Ball 03-07-2019 10:03 AM

I would watch a show about Hazel and Cha Cha. Like a very killy X Files.

He's devil-may-care to a tee but all the while he's simmering. When his arc changes in an instant you get the entire depth of the character and it's glorious. I love him, he's just a perfect mirror of my own neuroses.

Frank Drebin 03-08-2019 04:26 AM

And his love for dick.

Seanny One Ball 03-08-2019 10:31 AM

Tricky Dicky and the kak in Black

rez 03-08-2019 01:03 PM

Just watched ep 3 last night...trying not to rush through it.

Lock Jaw 03-15-2019 12:35 AM

Just finished this up.... great show, and I can't wait for season 2....

SPOILER: show
Was freaking GUTTED EMOTIONALLY by Pogo's death.... and then later on in the same episode was laughing out loud at Klaus as they are being attacked at the bowling alley and he insinuates they might be there for some kid's birthday party. (Then, of course, the traditional fight scenes set to non-traditional music always makes me smile)

Really enjoyed the whole cast and how they all interacted with each other.

I didn't notice Hazel and Agnes with a briefcase.... Saw that they got sucked into a time portal and assumed The Commission did it for some reason.... where would he have got a briefcase from? Oh, I guess The Handler.....

Seanny One Ball 03-16-2019 07:14 AM

You people need to pay attention

rez 04-03-2019 10:03 PM

SPOILER: show

Umbrella Academy sounds like a good name for an Anime about cute japanese schoolgirls going on adventures and using their umbrella's to defeat enemies including an epic duel between two popular characters where they fight each other with Umbrellas while making cute japanese anime noises.
I can see it now, "Umbrella Academy - Full Series box, $69.99, amazon.com"

Seanny One Ball 07-09-2020 06:39 AM

It's a freaking dope show

Seanny One Ball 08-01-2020 01:32 PM

Season 2 out now.

I watched episode 1 last night, may watch again tonight just to make sure I got it all.
Wonderful stuff.

teamXtremist 08-01-2020 06:56 PM

Starting season 2 today after season one of doom patrol

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2020 05:49 PM

Klaus retelling the fable of the scorpion and the frog was always going to be good shit.

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2020 06:31 PM

Show is very guilty of shoe-horning in lots of ugly examples of romance and with characters too annoying to pull it off in a meaningful way.

I think Klaus and Number 5 are the only two who have any endearing relationship's at all and one of them is with a mannequin torso and head.

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2020 06:31 PM

Vanya has become utterly intolerable now.

RP gonna blow a gasket when he sees this shit.

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2020 06:34 PM

Aside from the awful romantic angles it is still top class. The first season had the same problem.

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2020 06:52 PM

Huh, the show just made specific reference to Five's relationship with Dolores as the healthiest out of the lot.

Still, it's not an appealing gimmick when it takes up so much time having each character do their mopey romance routine instead of fighting the apocalypse.

Lock Jaw 08-02-2020 10:18 PM

Forcing myself to stop reading my book to watch this before the website CBR continues giving too many spoilers in titles of articles.

Lock Jaw 08-03-2020 01:59 AM

4 episodes in.... will never not bust out grinning whenever a fight scene occurs and the music breaks out

Seanny One Ball 08-03-2020 01:24 PM

Space Boy not as useless as he was last season, still a big sad sack though.
One thing that plagues me is why does nobody ever ask to speak to Ben through Klaus? Poor ghost is constantly ignored.

Seanny One Ball 08-03-2020 05:04 PM

Episode 7 is one of those incredible episodes that only fantastic writing, a superior cast and perfect direction can produce.

Seanny One Ball 08-03-2020 06:55 PM

Lyla isn't well played or written.
Bit of a wasted opportunity, actress has no talent or range.

Seanny One Ball 08-03-2020 07:05 PM

Getting a bit pathetic now how easily some situations could be remedied and how stupid this makes everybody seem.

I mean I get that they are all supposed to be inept to some degree but being totally useless and dumb isn't relatable. Not with their gifts.

Takes the shine off the quality when these things are over done.

The last few episodes are all very good though, the first half weren't as action packed.

Season 1 was great, season 2 is only "very good" even if it is basically just a rehash of season one in a different timeline.

Damian Rey 2.0 08-04-2020 04:30 AM

Klaus sup be forever endearing me. He is the most genuine character on the show.

Damian Rey 2.0 08-04-2020 04:35 AM

I've enjoyed thus season more than the last. Not because it's good. But because the characters are already established and now we get to see them progress. Or in Luther's case, just continue to prove he's a dumb nieve daddy's boy.

Seanny One Ball 08-04-2020 04:13 PM

None of them progress at all...

Literally none of them.

Damian Rey 2.0 08-05-2020 01:00 AM

Shut up Seanny and lemme enjoy my shows

Damian Rey 2.0 08-05-2020 02:39 AM

Finished the season. Seanny is right. The characters don't grow. What I should've said is I like that the characters are established so I can focus less on getting to know them and more about the plight at hand.

The direction of season 3 is obvious. But I look forwardto seeing what they do with it, and I hope they ditch the doomsday scenario.

Frank Drebin 08-05-2020 01:28 PM

3 eps to go and its......like......the exact same thing except no Hazel or Cha-Cha.

Seanny One Ball 08-05-2020 01:42 PM

Yep, it's The Hangover 2.

Frank Drebin 08-05-2020 10:09 PM

Hazel and Cha-Cha were in The Hangover??

Frank Drebin 08-05-2020 10:11 PM

Haven't finished but my prediction so far is (I reserve the right to change based on how this season ends) is that no matter where they go they always have to deal with an apocalypse that they create. The final season, should it make it that far, will be them trying to kill their younger selves.

Damian Rey 2.0 08-06-2020 01:34 AM

I'm hoping not. And that season 3 changes it up.

Seanny One Ball 08-07-2020 06:16 AM

I think the eternal apocalypse scenario has legs as a background setting but I think they have to explore Sir Reginald a lot more in any further season/s or people are going to get annoyed.

Maybe Sir Reginald is doing all of this to guarantee the Earth is doomed rather than saved?

rez 08-08-2020 03:37 AM

not to get into it but it was good, imho..

stay tuned (which is a great movie)

They dropped a pretty big bombshell about sir Reginald so we'll see where that leads. I can't get behone the constant doomsday storyline in every season. It was already wearing thin in this season.

The Lila swerve was also meh. No build up to. No hinting at more. Nada. Just randomly "oh btw she's special".

Seanny One Ball 08-08-2020 06:08 AM

She was a crap character anyway

Damian Rey 2.0 08-08-2020 06:50 AM

She really was. Problem is she now exists in this universe and will probably be a focal point of the next season.

rez 08-08-2020 06:55 AM

She's a Peter Petrelli but our eye candy.

rez 08-08-2020 07:25 AM

I have a boner for the actress that plays Lila.

https://assets.popbuzz.com/2020/30/r...412-view-0.png

Damian Rey 2.0 08-08-2020 01:33 PM

Me too. If they did nude scenes in this show and she had one I'd be more forgiving of the randomness of her inclusion.

Seanny One Ball 08-08-2020 04:08 PM

You just explained why Vikings is a better show than Game Of Thrones without even mentioning either of them.

Frank Drebin 08-08-2020 04:14 PM

Sophie Turner never got naked to mask her terrible acting.

Frank Drebin 08-08-2020 04:16 PM

Lila sucked but the actress didn't have a lot to work with. No depth or originality to her. All she had to do was act a bit smarmy. She had no range but there were no ways she could have displayed any if she's got it in her.
