Cool @ GM Mode but it's undoubtedly gonna be a broken mess of a game as always

I just realized I haven't played a wrestling video game in almost 15 years.

We'll see. Not saying it won't be, but they've had over two years to develop it this time around.

I'll wait for the bargain bin. I've been punk'd too many times buying these and the last one I bought was solely for the Ric Flair collectors shit.

The fact that they delayed it so far actually makes me cautiously optimistic that they've learned their lesson, or at the very least have been forced to confront the quality issues. You know that any past year, a delay would have been unthinkable, and they'd just release it in whatever sorry state it was in.

I can't anymore with those games. Year or not.....


Give me actual gameplay videos. Though the controller scheme was interesting with the "light/heavy" attacks and the "block/reversal" buttons.

I would like to take the optimistic approach that they delayed the game so much to actual overhaul the gameplay, quality etc. But the pessimistic part of me thinks the delays were partly due to having to remove half the roster including some wrestlers who may have been a factor in career mode.

Yeah, I'm not optimistic enough to preorder or anything.

Even if the cuts are the reason for the delay, it still gives them extra time polish up other stuff too.

After twenty years the standard is still freaking No Mercy as far as control goes. It won't be enough to get me back into the thick of things but still.

Not sure you need a GM and a Universe mode. Not overly taken with a Rey Mysterio Showcase (or any superstar-specific Showcase tbh). The presentation looks good but not a fan of using actual pictures of superstars as you can’t replicate that with a created superstar and with the rate of the roster turnover you’ll need to utilise created superstars to stay up to date.

It'd be a big mistake IMO. They have touted how they have a redesigned engine, gameplay and controls. They should be highlighting the fuck outta that with small snippets for the next 8 weeks.

Didn't even finish that showcase mode, as it was boring beyond belief.

Watched a couple of videos from “the community” who all seem “pleasantly surprised” with the gameplay, so fingers crossed. I’m intrigued by the GM mode and I didn’t pick up 20 so it’s been a few years since I had a new wrestling game so I’m interested but yeah, if it’s as glitchy as 20 it’ll be another pass.

That gameplay looks better than it has in like 10 years.

They are still under the delusion that they are making a fighting game. But the reversal system could lead to good drama.

The animation looks better, but you'd have to actually play it to see if all the hit detection and interactions are actually good now.

Not sure about the various reversal options. Could end up being overly complicated. Again gonna have to wait and see how it feels in hand.

Yeah the graphics are nice and all but I highly doubt it looks anywhere near that good on PS4. And obviously, graphics will only get you so far. Need more gameplay footage and need to see honest reviews from YouTube. Like Chris Denker pulled no punches about how much the last few 2k games sucked, if he plays this one and thinks it's good that means more to me than some random video 2k themselves filmed.

They seem to be doing this thing where they are drip-feeding the roster onto the website, some with ratings, some without. Is the rating reveal a big deal now? I know it can be with other properties, are they trying to mimic that or has it been a thing among the community?

GM deep dive tomorrow apparently. Looking forward to seeing what they got.

So GM looks good BUT only seems to run for one season. Also, still doesn’t seem like they’ve done a full roster reveal.

Look, if they'd take the time to work an engine that can be for this game only (its insanely unique) and then have "roster updates" available as either:


A) A "live service" type thing. Live services game tend to be shit, but a streamlined roster update capability would be nice.


B) DLC - take money from this to keep supporting the devs who can refine the engine, making it better over time.

They'd have to get rid of Community Creations for a live service model to be profitable. That would be a death sentence.

They don't feel mutually exclusive. You still wouldn't get everyone with updates, and that'd still leave room, tons, for creations. Especially with that community being passionate, I can see them saying "lol in-game model sux0rz" and making their own, better, improved versions.

Yeah there’s some middle ground. They could do aesthetic/gimmick updates for models already in the game. There’s still room for the community to be doing your AEW/NJPW/Impact/Legends stuff.

Gimmick and attire updates are already covered by CC. Why would anyone pay for official releases of that stuff when the created content looks just as good?

I just don't think there's enough money to be made, to match what they get from annual releases.

It's the same problem with sports titles. It should be a 20 dollar update every year. But as long as so many people are willing to pay $60, why would they?

Madden has been unplayable garbage for YEARS and people still fork over $60 a year plus way more for Madden Ultimate Team nonsense.

So EA stills sells copies and makes a profit despite themselves. Which they then use as ammo to get EA to extend the exclusivity deal another 5-10 years. And therefore 2k still can't get another crack at an NFL game when NFL 2k5 is still heavily praised all these years later.

It's infuriating. All I want is a good NFL game. Not lazy bullshit.

To a point. You’re always limited with hairstyles, no update to music, entrances, etc. I’m not even really saying in place of an annual release, I can see the business case for yearly releases.

It's not like this sort of thing isn't already done either. This is a pretty neat scam.

And if people could create and upload their own skins, they would not be able to get away with it.

We arrived at this juncture because at some point, the gaming community was brainwashed into thinking that charging for new content that's gameplay related is bad, and too easily abused, and that extra content should be cosmetic only.

Thus, $15 dollar skins. And now an entire generation of gamers has grown up thinking its normal and acceptable.

You can do this in Roblox, for example. You can create and upload nearly anything you want. You can purchase content from specific creators, or do your own. It's worked well as they've went from 30 million to 3 billion in revenue generation in just 5 years.

You're comparing two very different games with very different levels of mass market appeal. And I'd wager that most of the money roblox makes, comes from purchasable skins and avatar parts, just like all live service games.

But skins serve a different purpose in wrestling games. In most games its just a way to make your character look different and stand out. But in wrestling games people create stuff to reflect the real life product. So any cosmetic updates they release will have already been made on CC. Will the official product look better? Sure. $15 better? Nope. That's why Parts and Move Craft were the last dlc released for fire pro, once all the licensed stuff was done.

You could reliably sell new moves, but I can't think of much else. Point is, their current model is just more profitable for them. Blame all the people still buying this crap for that.

And the CC from WWE2kAnything is not even close to FirePro. I feel like those are two very different targeted audiences. Don't feel like everything would need to be $15 either, as lower pricing for various parts low for an easy buy-in and that's all it takes.



Guarandamntee you, they could do both, easily. It will appeal to the lowest common denominator and people will spend money on stupid shit, regardless.

I’m surprised that more games don’t do it tbf. The game is already outdated and it’s not out for another month. King Nakamura (gimmick), WALTER (name), Mandy Rose (hair), Mansoor (hair), Xavier Woods (gimmick), Humberto (gimmick) just from what we’ve already seen. I’ve usually bought some of the DLC character packs in the past, all depends on what they are and what they cost. If they get the content:cost ratio right there’s money to be made. Even if they only support it up to 3 months after launch.

And right now they're making a whole lotta $0.

It’s very much trying to rinse a little bit more money out of an ever decreasing niche, which is pretty much the operating model of modern wrestling.

It wouldn't need to be $15, but it's 2k. It absolutely would be $15.

I get the argument that pretty much everything is available through creations; 2K19 still has some top notch versions of the new United States and Inconsequential Championships despite the game being over 3 year old, but they don’t fit the models as well as the game designers can make them.

You can usually get a good approximation of a costume, but things like hair are another thing altogether. Also I get that that’s part of the development model; make the last game outdated so that people feel the need to buy the lastest version.

It’ll be interesting to see what sales are like this time around. 2K20 was the first year since 1998 that I didn’t buy at least one new wrestling game. Going back to WCW vs nWo Revenge and WWF Warzone, through WrestleMania 2000 and No Mercy, and every instalment of the SmackDown/SmackDown vs Raw/WWE #/2K. The reviews and fan backlash surrounding 20 stopped me from buying even when it went dirt cheap.

You can read the skepticism from this thread and every YouTube video covering the game; people are hesitant. Personally I’ve preordered. I think the GM mode will be fun, and I can usually form the Universe mode into something resembling fun. Having not had a new wrestling game for 3 years and still getting some enjoyment from 2K19 I’m going for it, but there will be a good chunk of the audience that have moved on.

I'm getting this one but only because I haven't bought a wrestling game since like 2013 or 14. Need a new one to tinker with from time to time.

You'd be better off getting WWE 2K19 "IMHO".

2K19 was so good.

GM Mode

-Only 3 matches per show for TV, 4 for PPV, 5 for Mania
-Just a male and female title, no secondary titles (no IC/US etc)
-Singles and tag matches only, no triple threat or fatal four way

They had 2 years to make this mode and omitted basic features that were in GM Mode 15 fucking years ago.

But hey, now they can promote these obvious features as NEW AND EXCITING additions for WWE 2k23!

Literally all they had to do was take Universe Mode and add GM elements to it. Ridiculous.

I can understand why though. It looks like they’ve added some elements of strategy to it with having to pair styles together to get the best outcome, that would be made difficult with multi-person matches. Or is that just the starting position? I know things like gimmick matches cost more so you have to earn/unlock them.

They also had something called Superstar Mode under the Universe mode where you can basically lock in as one character you want to focus on and just run all the stuff around that one person. Everything else will progress on it's own based on whatever decision you make for that person.

I saw it described somewhere as basically being a more in-depth version of the old story mode from Here Comes The Pain.

Could be cool in theory, but would require Universe to not be a broken mess. Lots of luck with that.

I'm into the idea of Superstar Mode. That GM mode seems like it would get old really quickly, though.

I'm not totally sold on this. Hoping for a demo or a free weekend or something so I can try it out first.

I can see why they’ve done what they’ve done with MyGM; Universe is the sandbox mode, there would be too much overlap. Might have been a way to integrate the two though. Like play universe in “GM mode” which puts restrictions on budget/roster/etc. As it is I don’t really like the “start in a school gym” bit, that works for MyRise but not so much here.

So the roster was more than likely finalized around WrestleMania last year, which is in line with when they normally do it. But the game just got delayed longer than usual.

The only people they've seemingly removed are Bray Wyatt and anyone that signed with AEW by last fall (Bryan, Cole, Fish, Ruby, Andrade, Black, Nese)

They've removed advanced entrance creation because it was causing bugs and crashes, not like they've had 2x the amount of time to get things like that fixed....

Most are an improvement, but big fucking oof at some of the women.

Yeah a lot of the women leave something to be desired. Carmella looks especially bad.

The dead eyes haven't gone away either, although it's not the only game I've seen where the eyes look kinda fucked up. MLB The Show is that way too.
