I think it was during his botched hot tag during the 6-man that led to the end of the match.

If you watch it back he goes for his usual springboard clothesline but slips on the top rope and lands pretty hard with all of his weight on his left foot and kind of winces in pain. He was able to finish the match but at the end you can see it on his face that something isn't right.

Also noticing that literally as soon as the bell rings he starts pulling at the foot covering on his left foot and then removes it and it stays removed for the rest of that segment.

Sucks man. Hope he comes back soon.

So can someone explain to me why Mox is being treated as the number 1 contender when AEWs own rankings have multiple people above him?

Really they’re just avoiding Wardlow taking a loss but I’m guessing the kayfabe excuse will be that his main event win on last week’s Dynamite catapulted him to #1 based on “win quality”.

I dunno, I don't think you have to book Wardlow to lose personally. Have him win the interim vs whoever at forbidden door and have him go over Punk when he comes back. Can work in the angle with MJF wanting a shot too via claiming he laid down for Wardlow because Tony told him to and even when he's pissed he has enough respect to show up and do what the boss says because that's the job.

Ugh. Too much shoot for me. It’s one thing to be complaining about pay/position but that’s too much.

This is where they haven’t really explained how they work it out. It’s a straight win-loss record deal, they’ve never to my knowledge said there’s any difference in a win in Dark vs a win on Dynamite, vs a win in the Main Event of Dynamite, vs a win on PPV/in a title match/main event of a PPV. If they were doing that it’d be closer to a “Power Ranking” deal where they could justify Mox being #1 contender.

I definitely remember an explanation early on (maybe from Cody) that rankings aren't strictly based on wins/losses but quality as well ala an AP poll.

That’s fine. Doesn’t take away from the fact that Mox isn’t top of the rankings and is the #1 contender. Like, they’ve created an “out” to put whoever at the top of the rankings but they haven’t done that. It’s just weird and undermines the point. They might as well have divisional rankings so that if you want to book Wardlow to win every match he can sit at the top of the TNT Championship rankings rather than them having to ignore they’re own internal logic to get to where they want to be.

Another reason to get rid of their rankings altogether....

It does put them in a situation where they have to explain away certain things like why the #1 guy isn’t the next one challenging for the belt. They might be better off ditching it altogether or just making it an outside poll voted on by “the wrestling press” so that they don’t have to adhere to it strictly but guys can still occasionally point to it as a reason they deserve a shot.

I just don’t think this specific situation is all THAT egregious.

Danhausen can win the title just by pointing and putting a curse on his opponent and nothing more, and he would still be a more credible champ than Phillip.

Wrestling is all about the drama and presentation. It’s not a real sport like the UFC. If someone gets injured you move on and keep the stakes alive. Nobody cares about a fake champion in wrestling.

Punk is older, beat up, he’s not an athlete and needs surgery. He might not be good for a long time. You have to strip him and move on. You get a free and easy to write program if he comes back.
