Ms. Marvel (Disney+ series) Thread
Didn't see a thread for this show so I figured, why not? Truth be told, I hadn't seen much advertising for this show since the initial trailer drop but I can chalk that up to not being online all the time. I had completely forgotten that today was the premier until a few days ago when I noticed one of my friends had it on her schedule for things to watch. Compared to Moon Knight, I honestly hadn't noticed much hype coming from Disney for this series. Maybe you guys had a different experience.
Anyways, saw the first episode earlier and it's fairly solid. The whole thing is already starting behind the 8-ball for me because of the change to Kamala's abilities but I suppose I can power through that. I dig the presentation like the bit where she and her friend are going through ideas for her cosplay costume or their text message exchange. It's going to need something like that to help it stand out from the rest of these shows. The whole "young person is at odds with their family and its heritage and expectations" thing has been done so many times so hopefully there's enough in the rest of the series to overcome that. I can absolutely see why young Marvel fans would be into this character, though. There's just this exuberance that permeates the screen. As a fellow Carol Danvers fan, I can appreciate Kamala's stance on this. And who wouldn't want to attend something like AvengerCon? Communists, that's who. How this will play out and how it will tie into Carol's next film remains to be seen but I'm on board so far. What say you? |
Pretty solid opener. Like the art style.

Was ok.
|
Watched the second episode. Was also ok. Feel like show would probably be great to people of that faith and culture, to see that representation.

It dips into "teen drama" territory in this episode, a la Cloak & Dagger but I pretty much expected that from this series going in. The tie-in to Spider-Man: No Way Home is an interesting approach. I'm wondering if Brie Larson got roped into doing something for this show, maybe in the final episode. But, yes, I have no doubt people belonging to this culture/ethnicity are digging these scenes.

This is unironically the best Disney+ MCU show so far.

Really want to see a Kamala, Kate, Yelena team up

Kate and Kamala sharing a scene where they gush about their nerd fandoms would be hilarious.

Third episode was pretty kewl..... was hoping she would tell her family.... would be more interesting/different to have the family in on the secret over the usual keeping secrets from those you love thing.....

I thought at the very least she was going to say something about the djinn, as in she'd just make up some excuse. I was puzzled as to why she didn't let her other friend in on it and I hope they address that. Also, who are these people that elected a high schooler onto something like a board? Still the best of the series so far even if the bad guys' coming out party seemed a bit rushed, but that's what you get when you've only got 6 episodes.

Have to say I'm certainly surprised at where this series keeps going, what with how episode 4 ends. Although I'm not sure how much more of these secret organizations that protect this world I can buy. Plus, why bother having the bad guys get arrested in the last episode just for them to immediately escape and inexplicably locate our protagonist out of the blue? Still, credit to where it's due as I certainly never expected this is where we'd end up after watching the first episode. I can't even hazard a guess as to what these last two episodes have in store.

OK, episode 5 kind of pulls what Moon Knight did with its fifth episode. The backstory is really well told, even though throughout the whole ordeal I'm shouting in my head asking about what's going on outside of it. The problem is things being left unexplained. Like, what power, if any allows Najma to pull off what she did, whatever it was? I still maintain six episodes isn't enough for some of these shows but then again Disney isn't looking at these to only be one shots. Hopefully this ends on a really strong note next week.

Watching ep1. I really like the khamala actress
|
And the visual style is very strong
|
2 eps in.i hate what theyve done with her powers but the visual style is great and the lead actress is really charming. The attempt to justify hijabs as "empowering for women" was "fucking disgusting" though.
|
Ep3. Pretty awful.
|
Easily the worst hour in all of the mcu. Hopefully its just the one episode thats anathema.
|
This is probably a great show to have on in the background while you drunkenly hook up with a friend or relatives SO.
|
Ep4
Any semblance of structure has completely fallen off. We literally abandon everything we've established in the 1st 3 eps and go around the world leaving nearly all of our interpersonal conflicts behind. Oh and time travel now at the hook cause why not. I liked her having the domino mask finally. Really confused how she's so proficient in combat inexplicably but the action sequence itself, ignoring what seems to be a substantial continuity gap, was good. |
Just finished ep5. Gone are all the good characters and interesting visual style. Lets hope ep 6 can bring it back around. Who ever planned this season out should be shot.

SPOILER: show Now how is it all going to tie together? Damn it, it'd better be good. As far as the episode itself, these Marvel shows on Disney+ really seem to enjoy just throwing random chaos and whatever at the wall and hoping something sticks for their climaxes. I'm glad they brought back the little things that made the first couple of episodes fun. Outside of the post-credits bit it doesn't really end strong but I'm not particularly disappointed in any major way. |
I really need to thank disney for making ms marvel. If i ever need an example for bad writing I'll always have this show
|
SPOILER: show |
Its the 1st formal acknowledgement that the inhumans push was specifically because disney didnt have the xmen film rights. We all knew it but they had officially denied it. That 5 seconds formally admits it.
|
Suit looks great in action btw. Only redeemable thing from the back 4 eps
|
What a hilarious and ironic end to the internal X-Men/Inhumans rights beef.

Going to have to rewatch that because I must've missed it. I've only been replaying the post-credits bit because it puts a smile on my face.

OK, I just finished checking it out again and you are indeed correct. Have to say that is an incredibly dumb direction for this character if that's what they're doing.
|
Making her an inhuman was the dumb direction. This is the one improvement the series makes over the comic
|
Yeah while Inhuman is technically the 616 accurate origin it's only really because of the failed push for that particular sandbox. She had nothing to do with Inhuman lore otherwise. Making her a child of the atom is efficient, fitting, and formally adds the verb to the MCU.

I remember thinking that Charlize would have been the perfect casting for captain marvel, but thought maybe she's too old.
Now that they actually brought Charlize in for a role thats going to have life for at least a few years, Im mad about it. |
On topic, I thought this started really strong, stumbled hard in the middle, and then had a solid finish.
Time travel bullshit was completely unnecessary. That whole thing should have just been a flashback. It doesn't even make any sense. Its like bardock level stupid. Only thng I can think of is that the inside the bangle is a time stone from another reality. Its energy helped trigger Kamalas mutant power. |

Just watched the last 3 episodes..... episode 4 and 5 really "fell off the wagon" a bit.... episode 6 was alright.... overall, the show went in some weird directions....
Nice @ post-credit scenes.... hopeful that Captain Marvel can actually be an interesting character/entertaining with Kamala around. |

I know the consensus is that Carol Danvers didn't come across as an interesting character in her movie and was lacking in personality. I always chalked that up to the script more than anything else and the character was kind of handcuffed with the whole amnesia thing. She's not in Endgame enough to expand on anything either so there's a bit of a problem moving forward.
My solution: have Moonstone (Dr. Karla Sofen) be the antagonist in The Marvels. If Carol is working for some sort of agency on Earth, S.H.I.E.L.D., S.W.O.R.D., or otherwise, have her take psychiatric sessions with Sofen as a condition of service. Sofen can work with her to explore memories and other aspects of who she is. Maybe Carol is trying to deal with the sudden celebrity status and she doesn't feel like she deserves it. She can talk about how she feels about losing Maria. This lets us get to know the character better and it makes a connection between the hero and villain in a very intimate way. The twist would be that Karla is using Carol for her own ends, learning about her experiences and knowledge about alien cultures. She would learn about the moonstone and take it for herself. She'd be able to use Carol's fears and doubts against her on top of being a physical threat. Throw in Michael Rossi as a love interest and you'd have a lot to work with to help make Carol a better character. Monica Rambeau and Kamala being involved would help, too, but I think my idea has some legs, no? |
Id be shocked if moonstone wasnt the antagonist in the marvels
|
Here's a wild idea.
Rogue as the villain of the marvels, with mystique manipulating her from the shadows. |

I think the smart play is to trickle some of them in before the first x-men movie, instead of dropping them in all at once. Maybe even put Wolverine in the next Avengers.

I wouldn't make Rogue the main villain, but somebody exploited by the main villain for her extremely and deceptively powerful ability. She'll be used against Carol for the famous moment to a) create the comic accurate Rogue with flight and strength and b) at least temporarily depower Captain Marvel to build decent stakes in this hypothetical movie. Thor deals with other gods or god killing machinations, Superman is ideally going against challenges to his beliefs. Carol is both above a lot of people's physical level and also enjoys the privilege of never being morally challenged. A woman zapping her powers kills two birds with one stone. Three birds, even, with growing the Mutant community in the MCU.
I'd also cast Rogue as a black southern belle because I always thought that fits. And she'd sure as hell retain the flirty yet warm demeanor. |
if only Rutina Wesley was 20 years younger.....
|
Women aren’t interesting enough to wield power.

What if their power is to shoot lasers out of their melons?

I just imagined a super hero that could conjure water melons that fire laser beams and now i want someone to make it

See, now I'm wondering if she's saying "Oh, no, no, no" because she was in the middle of something important and needs to get back or because she realized where she was and was freaked out by it. I can imagine her feelings if she thought she was in some room of a hormone-driven 15-year old fanboy who uses pictures of her for...um...fuel...:shifty:
