The Last of Us (HBO)
Making an "official" discussion thread since it seems that enough of us are watching this thing.
Show really just giving me one more thing to be paranoid about..... zombie movies/stuff, sure they can be scary, but I know it isn't really "practical".... But this I feel like could actually happen so makes me more nervous..... |
No game spoilers in here please unless you mark specifically as a game spoiler and put it in tags....
Otherwise, discuss your thoughts and theories here.... |
What if
It is all just a prequel to Super Mario and what we are seeing is the birth of the Mushroom Kingdom? |
If you squint hard enough, Pedro Pascal does look like Chris Pratt.
|
Opening scenes of both eps 1 and 2 gave me anxiety
Good show |

I never played the game, but read the story. They're doing a helluva job. The entire show, if it continues on course, will make you waaaaay more uncomfortable, and that's the point. Does a better job at looking at humanity post-apocalypse than TWD |
Nick Offerman deserves an Emmy nom for this episode
:'( |
Emotional episode.... different than the first two for sure.... wonder if there will be more "one off" episodes exploring the history of people/settings that Joel and Ellie encounter....
|
Biggest question of last night's episode though: Ellie has never been in a car, is naive to a lot of other stuff of the "larger world".... but how does she instantly know what a cassette tape is and what to do with it?!
|
I love Anna Torv for the record. She has a lifetime pass from me after Fringe, not that she needs it, because she is still killing it!

I've never been on a cruise or a boat, but I know what a life jacket is and how to use it. |
You comparing a life jacket with a cassette tape?
Cassettes would have already been obsolete by 2003. Pretty sure life jackets would have still been around. |
cassettes were definitely not obsolete in 2003. plenty of cars on the road at the time (including mine) had a cassette player. i still buy cassettes to this day (although yes now i am very much in the minority on that one).
not that it matters. this level of nitpicking in shit is so annoying to me. get over it, nerd. |

that being said i've been loving this show so far, especially the last episode. fleshed things out a bit while bringing a great contained love story into the mix. i was hoping for more nick offerman in the show when i found out he was on it, but this was too good for me to bothered that he won't return.

Would you have preferred an Interrobang? |
oh yes please i love it when a question mark looks like it's getting erect :naughty:

i was just on one this morning and for whatever reason this thread set me off...
|
You just need a good Interrobang: ‽
|
I forgot to say I am watching for geo graphic accuracy btw
|
OssMan watches TV with a stack of atlases by his side.

Also they added a in remembrance to Annie Wersching to the beginning of the 3rd episode, which is nice. I never played the game but I bet she was awesome in at.

You like knowing the route for sure. |

He watches with one Tony Atlas by his side. Getting stomped on by big bitches. |

SPOILER: show |
Have my days all mixed up so I thought today was Sunday, so waited until tonight to watch the latest episode... which was apparently released on Friday anyways....
SPOILER: show |
Great episode this week.... emotional....
|
Why does every episode gotta be a punch to the feeling factory?
|
That's the game
|
Is it nearly done yet? I’m going to watch it once it’s all available.
|
Not seen a single episode, but read they are doing a 1:1 of the game? I dunno.
Here's the entire story, with gameplay, no annoying commentary. 6 hours https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkLPKd-Vs8g |
Episode with the gay guys and the one with the deaf kid were good... didn't like last night's that much
|
The last one was really controversial when it came out as a video game... typical "Why did they have to make Ellie gay" "It was never implied she was gay so this is shoving it down our throats" shite
|
Quote:
The controversy around the sequel was about the narrative and about Joel. I wont go into details for the sake of the show but Joel was the issue. Or more over the schlocky writing. |
Closest it came to being about Ellie was dirt rags like Kotaku cherrypicking one douche bags tweet off twitter and writting an article scapegoating everyone who hated TLoU as a biggot instead of addressing why the sequel was so reviled.
|
The series is very compelling. As someone who's played both games, it has exceeded my expectations.

Now that the second part has been out for a few years the controversy around it is so much funnier... it was a very interesting "commet" on video game audiences that a bunch of diaper babies complained they had to play as a character they hated. I thought it was a genius decision and admittedly i didnt even enjoy playing the game, like the game was upsetting because of this, but i appreciated that. "Gaming" is too focused on fun to be able to sacrifice pure enjoyment for the sake of storytelling and the audience at the moment is too immature to embrace it... but your kids are gonna love it |
Remember when Metal Gear Solid 2 made you play as Raiden?
We wanted Snake! |
First episode is good stuff so far.
I particularly enjoyed the racing through the streets as the world burns, that was well done. I’ve never played the game so it’s all new to me. |
The child has a weird face. Big round forehead, looks like a Neanderthal.
|
Kid can’t act. If sort of works because kids are little freaks at that age.
|
Apparently the actress is nineteen…
She has to have some sort of condition. |
Episode three was about as good as a stand alone episode can be. Phenomenal.
Stupid kid starting to win me over with puns and F-bombs too. I’m enjoying it, didn’t plan on watching four episodes in a row and I might keep going. Melanie Lynskey just showed up looking all pissed off. |

Episode five kicked all of the wind out of me there…
Whoever wrote that has big balls. |
That was an excellent series though I doubt I would watch a second because it was so well journeyed.
|
I didn't even consider that because I already "know" that there is another video game and another season was already confirmed....
But yeah, I wouldn't be mad if that was just the end of it. |
Season 2 will just be her making decisions that disappoint or scare him juxtaposed with her finding out the lie that will disappoint and scare her. Both will feel great guilt.
I can’t set myself up for that level of predictability or repetition…will they stick together or be torn apart?! |
Episode 3 unbelievable.

They should do a series that’s just hours of names of the dead victims. They could call it “The List Of Us” and Peter Greenaway could direct it.
If you’re not having that one have this for free - make is an opera and call it “The Liszt Of Us”. |
No Schindler jokes either.
No cheap heat. |
They could show the credits and call it The Cast of Us
|
They could do cars street racing and call it The Fast of Us
|
They could set it in Russian provinces and call it The Oblast of Us
|
The Last of Oss

They should have done this for sure. Ellie got that pun joke book for nothing. |
Just finished. Outperformed all expectations. The unicorn of a show adapted from a game that respected the source material while being able to put little spins on it to keep it fresh. Especially the last episode. Really happy that the ending was the same as the game. It was a great ending where the choice Joel makes can be debated but will never be settled on by everyone. Thats good writing.
Yeah, it wasn't perfect. Ellie was more obnoxious at times than I would have liked but they never went overboard with it or tried to make a "new and improved" flawless version of her. I even have a glimmer of hope that the success of the show will actually force them to retcon some of the terrible narrative choices made in the second game and we get the film version of what it would have been like if they hadn't fucked it up. Otherwise it would be interesting to see a new round of people who hadn't played the games be upset at what happens and those of us who have can laugh at them as they were probably the type who made fun of those who had the same reaction years prior. 9/10 |
