Most powerful scenes in cinema (spoilers abound)
In no order:
Shawshank Redemption: The Aria being played over the PA system Shawshank Redemption: Brooks' suicide Schindler's List: The red dress The Godfather: Finale Fight Club: Final Scene Add your own. |
The stuff Buzzkill said plus:
Requiem For A Dream: Climax with electro-shock therepy/arm getting cut off/ass to ass/jail Donnie Darko: Mad World/final scene Memento: Your wife was diabetic One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest: Final scene |
Se7en: pretty much everything from the box onward
|
Green Mile: The last half hour or so
|
as a huge stanley kubrick fan, i'd put the treatment scene in clockwork orange on the list, and certainly the entire finale-nicholson-goes-insane scene from the shining. de niro shooing the pimp in taxi driver is pretty nuts, too. but there are far too many powerful scenes in cinema history to list.
|
Rudy: When he tackles the guy in the final scene and they show his father, his brother, his freind and the groundskeeper guy and they're all proud of him. Made me :'(
Stand By Me When Chris stands his ground and Ace was about to kill him, but Gordie shoots the gun off. The War When Kevin Costner's character gives the cotton candy to those asshole kids, when his son(Elijah Wood) just got beat up by them. Of Mice and Men When he shoots his brother. That was tough to watch. |
Full Metal Jacket: Bathroom Suicide Scene & the soap beating scene.
Misery: The Hobbling Scene. Shashank Redemption: When the guard kills the inmate who knows that Andy was wrongly convicted. Reservoir Dogs: Mr. Blonde Dancing/Ear Cutting Scene. |
Dogville: Final scene
|
Armageddon scene with Bruce Willis saying goodbye to Liz Tyler was pretty powerful. " Tell Chick I could not have done it without him". It is still they only movie scene to make me cry
|
Full Metal Jacket - Bathroom scene with Pyle, Joker, and Hartman
12 Angry Men - When the last juror says not guilty. American History X - Curb scene Audition - Final scene with the needles and leg and aosduifasdf Boogie Nights - That shit where everything is cut together and bad shit happens to everybody I don't feel like going past the Bs, because I am lazy, but there are 9235 more I can name. |
Godfather Part II- when Pacino sits alone at the end
American History X - dinner table scene Shawshank Redemption - Brooks's suicide |
On the Waterfront - Marlon Brando's classic "I coulda' been a contender" scene
That's one of my favorites, most of the others have been said. |
The Goonies - where chunk tells sloth he's going to live with him now & sloths ears just go crazy! it gets me everytime that scene!
|
just thought-
Shawshank Redemption - where they cripple the guy who had been rapping andy The Great Escape - after they have all been recaptured & the germans tell them to stretch their legs, then kill them all. Escape to Victory - apart from Pele's overhead kick, the scene where they can escape at half time but choose to play on as they can win the game is good. Stand By Me - When Chris stands his ground and Ace was about to kill him, but Gordie shoots the gun off. (thanks LC) The Towering Inferno - when Steve McQueen drops the fireman from the lift to then realise he landed safely Cool Hand Luke - Paul Newmans performance was excellent and i love the way that in the end he still had that daft grin on his face. |
Taxi Driver - Final shoot out and everything after.
|
I'm going Old school
High Noon: when Gary Cooper is standing all alone in the center of town right before the shoot out. |
Million Dollar Baby - The Ending
Godfather II - Ending Shawshank Redemption - Brook's Suicide The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly - 3 Way Shootout Kill Bill Vol. 2 - Bill's Death Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - From the erasing of the final memory to the end. Probably more, but that's what immeadiately came to mind. |
A Few Good Men... Tom Cruise: I want the Truth...
then to see Jack Nicholson's face as he say YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH Then later when he admited to giving order for Code Red Powerful stuff |

SAW: When the jigsaw killer gets up from the floor at the end
The Ring: Samara coming through the fucking TV screen Empire Strikes Back: I am your father scene Saving Private Ryan: Normandy Beach |
Ladder 49: The funeral in the end
3: From the beginning of the 2001 Daytona 500 up until the end of the movie Those 2 and 1 other that I can't think of at the moment (might of been the Armageddon moment mentioned by The Answer) are the only movies that have ever come close to bringing a tear to my eye. |
"Empire Strikes Back: I am your father scene"
I always thought that was hillarious. Luke: HE TOLD ME ENOUGH!!!!!!!!! HE TOLD ME YOU KILLED HIM!!!!!!!!! Vader: No! I am your <s>rapist</s> father! Luke: No . . . That's not true . . . THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Vader: You know it to be true! <s>Your genintals were so soft . . .</s> Luke: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! <s>THEY'RE DRY AND ROTTEN</S> |
what the fuck?

<b>Road to Perdition:</b> Paul Newman's death

Shawshank the Andy "Jesus Christ Pose" in the rain after he escapes is pretty powerful. It's my wallpaper at work.
Sappy yet powerful, the moving penny scene in "Ghost". The Russian Roulette Scene when they are all captured in "The Deer Hunter". Mystic River, when Senn Penn's Character (Jimmy) shoots Tim Robbins (Dave) thinking he killed his daughter. Actually the last 15-20 minutes of the movie blew my fucking mind. The torture scene in "The Passion of the Christ". |
Green Mile - When the one guy was fried in the electric chair
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - the end Armageddon - the end Braveheart - the end Lady Snowblood - the end |

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Godfather 3's ending. Even though it was kinda shitty watching Michael Corleone die and knowing that it was officially over must've had some kind of impact when it first came out.
|
^ Godfather Part III was so poorly made that I think noboddy gave 2 shits about the movie or the ending
|
SPOILERS!!!!!
Godfater 1- Sonny's death, and the finale. Godfather 2- "The Kiss of Death", and the finale. Braveheart- The Freeeedom scream. The Aviator- The plane crash into Hollywood. Hello everyone, I read all your comments all the time, just never reply to any but thought I would throw some things out there for this topic.
ET - ET dying Pay It Forward - The little boy dying Scarface - Tony shooting his friend, Then Tony dying at the end I thought I had some more but my mind went blank, maybe I will remember and post some more. |

One Hour Photo: Sy's "Red Eye" dream. Adaptation: Laroche's car crash. Rear Window: Thorwald finds out what apartment Jeff lives in. Return of the King: Aragorn's charge at the Black Gate. |

Bambi - His mom dying The Lion King - His dad dying The Land Before Time - His grandad dying Requiem For A Dream - As FakeRazor said Lost Highway - When Bill Pullman's character walks into the darkness and then we see Balthazar Getty's character. Really messed up scene. Bully - The killing of the bully Casper - When Casper gives up becoming a boy in order to bring back Bill Pullman's character. Kids - The last scene where Casper basically rapes a drugged up Jennie, not knowing that she has HIV. |
I have to say a lot of the ones already mentioned.
Also in Gladiator when Phoenix's character stabs Crowe's character. |
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly --- The final three-way show down, which was basically a long, drawn out scene with close-up of squinty eyes and handguns, set to Morricone's excellent theme. (CoE already mentioned this, but this is possibly my favorite scene of all time.)
The Usual Suspects --- slow take when it's revealed who Keyser Soze is. Nightmare on Elmstreet --- the scene where that one teenager (I think it was Depp) sinks into the bed and is shredded to pieces Goodfellas --- when those kinds find that dead couple under the bridge in the Cadillac, and Leyla by Eric Clapton plays in the background Dark City --- the scene where the Strangers fly over the city Predator --- "You're one ugly motherf**ker" |
Pure Country - The end where Dusty is singing to Lula.
|
Dancer in the Dark: Final scene.
|
Life is Beautiful- when Roberto Benigni plays the song for his wife in the concentration camp. AWSOME FUCKING MOVIE with the exception of the god awful english translation because the translation was 3/4 wrong
|
American History X- I think the scene where his father speaks out about his racism. Just for that scene to be the catalyst of the rest of Norton's life. Plus, the black and white was great.
I also think Brook's death in the Shawshank Redemption is powerful |
American Beauty-Lester gets fired, the scene at the dinner table
Closer-The confrontation between Larry and Dan in Larry's Office ("Ever See A Human Heart? It looks like a fist wrapped in blood!") Suicide Kings-Lono's speech about his father. Lost In Translation-The ending (One of the most perfect music cues ever as the cab drives off.) Seven-Sommerset opens the box. Chasing Amy-The scene in the rain between Alyssa and Holden. Jaws-Quint's speech |

|
Quote:

Shawshank - When Red finds Andy at the beach
Forrest Gump - When Forrest speaks to Jenny's tombstone about little Forrest. Mystic River - "Is that my daughter in there?" scene Million Dollar Baby - The end scene The Last Samurai - When Watanabe killed himself In the Bedroom - When Nick Stahl's character is killed. |
Shawshank- When Red gives his speech about being rehabilitated.
