If you want, my cousin has a band and I heavily enjoy them...you might as well, who knows. The link is www.minorbroadcast.net. His band is "Kicks to Hypnotize" and then the singer/guitarist has some solo stuff that is wicked awesome under "Scott Steele".

...Since, you know, "indy" now means pussy music.

Shaved Monkey 06-23-2005 05:44 PM

Here's some good shit.

Type O Negative
The Headstones
The Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir

Kane Knight 06-23-2005 06:55 PM

Type O Negative is "indy?"

Kinda, they're most certainly not mainstream, so I'm not sure how you'd qualify them. But they kick ass anyway. One of the original "emo" bands.

Not really emo.

Pete has testicles. ;)

Devil made me.

but seriously, since I don't acknowledge emo any more than I do Nu-Metal as a genre, I can't really call them proto emo. Emo's just a "odds and sods" category for trendy agnst.

Type O doesn't really fit in there. Even there darker songs aren't angsty enough for the likes of the pop crowd.

Really? Including the song "Unsuccessfully Coping With the Natural Beauty of Infidelity"?

That's pretty angsty right there.

That's about as bad as they get though, and really, I don't find it as "waaah I'm misunderstood" angsty...

Most of their lyrics are dark, bordering on depression or angst, but generally aren't all that much of either. Nine Inch Nails is closer to the angst of "emo."

This is true, they're more of an "I hate everything" angst. Oh yeah, and don't ever compare NIN to "emo" again. ;)

Kane Knight 06-23-2005 10:53 PM

Yeah, there's a huge world of difference. Trent doesn't suck. :D

Penner 06-24-2005 01:57 AM

a change of pace
a thorn for every heart

carrythezero 06-24-2005 03:08 AM

I didn't really mean to classify them all as "indie", those are just the bands I listen to. Some of them could be classified as indie to some people I guess. However, there are some in the list that aren't indie at all. Such as the ones you mentioned and a few others. The meaning and overall take on "indie" music has changed kind of recently though. I didn't really expect anyone on these boards to recognize much of anything I posted in my list actually.

Yeah, Indie is now a genre, rather than someone being on an independent label. The funny thing is they still love to sell this major label drek as in some way independent. Yes, you're indie, and I'm the new Sabbath Frontman.

I know a lot of those bands, but I selected the ones I own/listen to. Others (Wilco, the Flaming Lips), I never got into. Some I only know by name. Some of the ones I quoted aren't that surprising (The Pixies), some are sort of surprising (Frank Black's work without the Pixies, Dinosaur JR), but GALAXY 500? That was definitely a shocker. I have trouble even finding their stuff.

carrythezero 06-24-2005 09:40 PM

I have the Galaxy 500 box set with all of their albums, it's pretty awesome.

Kane Knight 06-25-2005 12:01 AM

Sweet. I don't think I've even SEEN that.

carrythezero 06-25-2005 01:51 AM

Yeah, I haven't seen it since I got it. I purchased it a while ago at a music store in Syracuse called "Sound Garden". That place is the best...it has pretty much any album you can think of. Real good prices too.

Kane Knight 06-25-2005 02:49 AM

Until recently, we had a shop tha twas great. Called "Rap City" and if he didn't have it, he could find it. Real, bootleg, out of print, he could almost always find it. I ordered one thing with Mark that didn't come in. I'm convinced it doesn't exist, though they claimed it would be released. It was awesome. The dude knew me so well too. He'd actually have a copy of the latest Ferrick or Stone Coyotes set aside for me. And he always knew his shit.
