The Answer 08-02-2005 01:09 AM

Official Hockey UFA thread

A big defenceman is off the free agent market.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed Adam Foote to a three-year, $13.5 million ($4.5 million per season) contract on Monday.

The 34-year-old scored eight goals and 22 assists with the Avalanche in 2003-04.

The two-time Stanley Cup winner also was a key member of Canada's 2002 Olympic Gold Medal hockey team.
Related Info

Foote, who was drafted by the Quebec Nordiques 22nd overall in 1989 spent his entire career with the Nordiques/Avalanche franchise.

MoRcHeEbA 08-02-2005 01:29 AM

he deserves his money... he was under-paid his whole career.

KleptoKlown 08-02-2005 02:12 AM

Columbus is gonna do a lot better then most people will give them credit for I think.

The Answer 08-02-2005 01:05 PM

Philly has signed Derian Hatcher, Chris Theiren and Mike Rathje to boost their defense. Adrian Aucoin signed a 4 year/16 million dollar agreement with the Hawks

MoRcHeEbA 08-02-2005 01:59 PM

Holik to the Thrashers

MoRcHeEbA 08-02-2005 02:01 PM

looks like Modano to the Bruins

The Gooch 08-02-2005 02:20 PM

Anyone going to provide a wish list for their own team?

I'm hoping Ottawa makes a pitch for Rafalski and Jason Allison. Nothing too dramatic, but I've been a fan of both of those guys for a while.

El Vaquero de Infierno 08-02-2005 02:43 PM

I hope the Wild can get a big name signed up... or two.

Your Wild drafted a good one in Benoit Pouliot. As a native Sudbury boy and a fan of the Wolves I've watched as many games as I could on TV this past year and caught a playoff game while I was last home visiting. This kid has the goods to be a great NHLer. The Rangers moving up to draft Staal was another good move.

My bro, a die hard Habs fan was so pissed he wasn't available.

True, and before the lockout we aquired Rolston from the Bruins, who should help bolster the offense this season. And we have some good players in the waiting like, Thelen, for the future.

But with the prospect of big names and solid players being released and floating about for the taking, it is a chance for smaller teams like the Wild to add more depth to their lines.

weather vane 08-02-2005 07:04 PM

OH MY MURRAYYYYY!!! Not to mention Shawn Mceachern. Bruins are actually making decent pick ups.

I'm liking Phillies direction so far. And yes, KK, the Blue Jackets are going to surprise the casual hockey fans.

weather vane 08-02-2005 11:14 PM

Eh Dave Scatchard ... another not bad pick up. Too bad about Modano though. So third line Scatchard-Isbister-McEachern. I can live with that.

asphyXy 08-03-2005 01:51 AM

Straka to the RANGERS.

Lara Emily 08-03-2005 02:23 AM

Edmonton acquired Pronger from St Louis for Eric Brewer, Doug Lynch and Jeff Woywitka.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=132273&hubName=nhl

I don't think I would have given up Brewer personally.

MoRcHeEbA 08-03-2005 02:49 AM

why he's no where near as good as pronger ... I wouldn't have given up both Brewer and Woywitka though. Woywitka is an amazing skater.

Brewer is also near half a decade younger then Pronger and he was also (with Pronger) on the Canadian Olympic team. It's gonna be exciting to see Pronger on the Oilers but I think they may have given up to much, I really really like Brewer.

MoRcHeEbA 08-03-2005 02:57 AM

he has no where near the offensive upside pronger has though. Edmonton has good defense and just got better there. I think it's a great move. The only way they gave up to much was to include Woywitka.

I'm not saying it's a bad trade, I just personally like Brewer. That and I worry about Pronger's health and wonder how many more good years he actually has left.

Gertner 08-03-2005 11:43 AM

looks like the Leafs are close to signing Jason Allison. At least he isn't 39 yrs old

MoRcHeEbA 08-03-2005 01:37 PM

yeah just hassn't played for 3 years :D

Canucks resigned Nausland
Flames resigned Iginla
Canadiens resigned Kovalev
Conchar to the Pens

and it looks like Neidermeier will sign today with either the Devils, Canucks, Wings, Flames, Pens

KleptoKlown 08-03-2005 01:47 PM

Since the pens just got Gonchar, I doubt they'll get Nieds, and the Canucks just tied up a chunk of change with Naslund. Love to see the Flames get him though. Fuck det and nj.

weather vane 08-03-2005 04:59 PM

Hahaha! LEETCH! Modano might still be coming to the Bruins!!! Or Blackhawks. :n:

Arashi Kage 08-03-2005 07:00 PM

Dissapointed that the Pens didn't get Kovy, but I was hoping that the Habs would retain him if he didn't return to the Pens.

Good to get Gonchar, the Pens need more help on the blue line than they do up front.

KleptoKlown 08-03-2005 07:05 PM

Oilers just traded York for Peca...

wow Lowe's getting some big guys, gonna be a great season.

Satan signs with the Islanders, guess the cap room left by peca left Milbury with a couple extra bucks. Hope they have fun paying 7.8 million for Yashin

Joey Slugs 08-03-2005 07:29 PM

Blackhawks sign blue-liner Adrian Aucoin and reports are they could be close to signing superstar center Peter Forsberg and goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin.

If this goes down, I'll be proud to don my Hawks jersey once again.

KleptoKlown 08-03-2005 07:35 PM

good ol fairweather fans, only cheer for your team when their is something to cheer about.

VonErich Lives 08-03-2005 08:09 PM

Wow, really like he Bruins moves.

Especially if they land Modono, there word is if they don't they're going after Forsberg.

I also keep hearing Scott Young wants to play here, but have no idea his contract status.

KleptoKlown 08-03-2005 08:18 PM

doesnt matter if the go after forsberg as the Flyer just signed him to a 2 year contract.

FLyers are now over the cap, but its being reported or whatever that they'll ship Roenick to the LA Kings...

Great, Roenick back in the west

Zen v.W.o. 08-03-2005 08:27 PM

Fuck the atlantic division is pretty stacked when it comes to the big talents. Jagr, Mario and Forsberg in the same division.

Well, Modono turned down the stars offer, his agent said there's about 9mil between the Stars offer and the "other teams".

The agent said Boston, Atlanta & Chicago but Modono has only spoken of Boston.

with or without, still should be a fun season to watch, for all the teams.

KleptoKlown 08-03-2005 09:33 PM

I dont see why the Bruins would go after Modano for that much money, when they seem to be playing tougher with Thorton. They should be trying to lock him up for years to come. If they're going to be paying too much money for a player, why not go after someone like Niedermayer, especially after loosing Gonchar.

YOUR Hero 08-03-2005 09:34 PM

I'd take Brewer over Pronger IMO. Brewer is younger faster and does have an offensive side to his game. It's not as good as Pronger's, but Pronger is older, slower and injury riddled. Peca, OMG. I'm happy for the Oil, that makes two Captains from other teams they just acquired, BTW.

KleptoKlown 08-03-2005 09:39 PM

Think they stick with Conklin/Markkanen in net? I could see Lowe going after someone like Thibault if the Hawks sign Khabibulin likes its being said...

YOUR Hero 08-03-2005 09:50 PM

The Oil's back baby. I think you're on to something, KK. I can see them going after a higher quality goalie. Not sure if they could afford say, Theodore, but Thibault is a steal. Man, he's real good, surprised the Hawks wouldn't want to hold on to him.

KleptoKlown 08-03-2005 09:57 PM

yeah, i'd take Thibault over Khabibulin any time. Khabibulin is a great goalie, but only when he wants to be. He's the type of player that would sign with one team because their contract offer was 100,000 dollars higher, instead of showing some loyality or going to a better team. Thibault has never really been on a good team. Too much pressure with the habs, being the goalie that was traded for Roy and all, and Chicago hasnt been any good in years. Moog version 2.0?

Y2Ant 08-03-2005 10:01 PM

I would have to agree with you on this one Cheebs. I liked this offer, but it was a bit much adding in Woywitka...

Lara Emily 08-03-2005 11:23 PM

great trade for the Oilers, they got Peca for cheap, York is good but Peca is awesome. The Oilers are going to be a kick ass team to watch this year.

YOUR Hero 08-03-2005 11:24 PM

One thing about The Oilers though, they're very good at assesing talent. They had to be.

KK, I think there's going to be another trade/signing. Lowe is looking for a first line centre and I heard Zhamnov's name being talked about. We only had Smyth for big bucks on our team so we have room for signing. Or we'll trade some of our younger talent which is sad to see, but it's nice to see our team building up once again.

As for goalies, I have no issues with the two we have - they're amazing. But I would love to see a big name come in.

As for the rest of the league, I like that the teams are going out there and grabbing players like Forsberg to Philly, Panthers getting a few and whatnot. This is going to be a great year to watch hockey...

Zen v.W.o. 08-03-2005 11:42 PM

As much as I don't like it, I'm going to have to agree. Well, hopefully Peca can have a positive impact for the Oilers.

YOUR Hero 08-04-2005 12:26 AM

Oh Peca will. He's nowhere near done.

IMO, there are some players that are being overpaid, Peca isn't one of them.

Word is they want to lock up Thorton also.

I like that they have gone after some hard nosed "blue collar" guys.

The old Bruins teams (that were good), were always made up off a bunch of blue collar type players and 1 maybe 2 "stars" but they worked there butt off as a team and always over performed.

That and what really hurts thorton is the lack of muscle, everyone takes runs at him, then he defends himself, gets in a fight and gets tossed. Now looks like the Bruins will have some people to take the heat off him or atleast hit back for him.

I think Ant is going to need a change of panties. Ducks signed Niedermayer to a 4 year deals. 6.725 million. Ozolinsh and Nieds...thats some pretty talented offensive dmen.

Blackhawks pick up Martin Lapointe

Pengiuns got Andre Roy, they were after a tough guy, and had links to Domi. They made a better move here as Roy > Domi.

Sabres signed Teppo Nummimen as well. He's getting older, but he can still play, He's now the Sabres #1 dman...

and VEL...cant really blame the B's for wanting to get Thorton long term. Although Thorton doesnt seem to be bitting. If the B's choke this year, and don't look good for the playoffs, watch for them to trade Thorton, as im sure he'll be testing the FA market next season.

Everyone expected him to be delt now, but doesn't seem to be happening.

I think if they get some bodies around him, which they seem to be doing, all should be fine.

MoRcHeEbA 08-04-2005 02:15 PM

I would bet the B's will be trying to trade him all season, They just need someone to bite. Rumor in the Winnipeg paper today was him to the Av's for Tanguay and a conditional pick.

MoRcHeEbA 08-04-2005 02:16 PM

Thornton isn't mad at the team. He's said he likes the team. He's pissed at management and the city press for no one backing him up in the playoffs last time.

It was more to do with the press, he got pissy that when he didn't play great in the playoffs they wrote about it. It came out later that he was injured and no one knew.

That being said, the Bruins the last few years have said they wouldn't sign big or long contracts because they knew there would be a new agreement a teams would be cutting players and salary...

Well, looks like they were right. I also find it intersting they seem to be spending top money on older guys, who only may have a few years if that, maybe they think a lot of teams are going to max their cap quick and be stuck with aging over salaried players and they'll be able to scoop up some young guys?

Still looking at season tickets, flipping between 2 season tix or 4 1/2 season tickets...

Yashamaga 08-04-2005 10:45 PM

Incase anyone wants it, that site has all of the signings and is updated hourly.

Yashamaga 08-04-2005 10:57 PM

Leetch
Murray
Zhamnov
Scatchard
McEacheran

nice signings there IMO

we still need either one more winger or one more D man. They should look into getting Kariya or Hamrlik

I was really hoping they'd sign Rafalski, but he went back to NJ.

The probable lines are this:

Isbister-Thornton-Murray
Samsonov-Zhamnov-Bergeron
Axelsson-Scatchard-McEacheran
Huml-Hilbert-Fitzgerald

Leetch-Boynton
Gil-Girard
Moran-Stuart/Dallman/Alberts/Jurcina

-------

I'm LOVING the B's 2nd line. Sammy, Zhammy, and Patrice are gonna light shit up.

Yashamaga 08-04-2005 11:00 PM

Also, if Sergei Zinovjev decides to come over from Russia and get in Camp, that kid will be something special. He reminds me of Samsonov.

Yashamaga 08-04-2005 11:05 PM

Posted on MapleLeafs.com Forums:

Chicago Sportsradio (ESPN 1000) is reporting a three-way deal between the Hawks, Boston, and Toronto. Chicago sends Eric Daze to Boston; the Bruins send Thornton to Toronto; Leafs send Belfour to Chicago. Chicago Lapointe signing cleared way for the deal; adding Belfour returns him to his original team.

---------

fuck that.

and it was posted on the Leafs forum, so I doubt there's any truth to it.

MOC isn't retarded enough to send Thornton for Eric fucking Daze

weather vane 08-04-2005 11:09 PM

I say the line up will look more like this

Samsonov-Thornton-Murray
Axelsson-Zhamnov-Bergeron
Isbister-Scatchard-McEacheran
Huml-Free Agent-Fitzgerald

The defence is too hard to call because they have one signed. Two if Moran plays defense. Add Raycroft on defense and it should be an alright year. Looks about the same as last year. Just new third line and Zhamnov for Nylander and Leetch for Gonchar.

Yashamaga 08-04-2005 11:10 PM

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to The Hurricane again.

bleed Black and Gold, brother

weather vane 08-04-2005 11:12 PM

You know what I wouldn't even mind that. Daze is pretty decent and if they sign another top forward and Samsonov its all good. Thornton is pissing me off.

Yashamaga 08-04-2005 11:13 PM

Nah, Sully's gonna pair Isbister with the Joe/Muzz combo and try to make a Knuble out of him. There's no reason to waste Samsonov on that line when he can be doing amazing things with Zhammy and Bergeron.

Yashamaga 08-04-2005 11:15 PM

By waste Sammy I mean that the scoring is mostly going to be Joe feeding Muzz for the goal.

weather vane 08-04-2005 11:20 PM

Isbister is not a top line player in any right but either was Knuble. I dunno.

Yashamaga 08-04-2005 11:24 PM

I forgot Boyes too, replace him w/ Hilbert and send Andy back to Providence.

Thornton is going nowhere. Murray talks to him everyday and his signing is what will keep Joe locked up for the long term. We just need to get it official and then do the same for Sammy.

MoRcHeEbA 08-04-2005 11:34 PM

I wouldn't be shocked to see them move Bergeron to the first line if Thornton stays. The new rules makes the game way faster and Begeron has speed on Murray.

Unless the Leafs then plan on signing a goalie they'd be fucking nuts to make that trade, it would make Trevor Kidd their starting goalie lol.

As it stands the Pens will probably finish either just in or just out of the playoffs. If they manage to sign a top golatender like The Bulin Wall or Cujo and maybe Kariya (he's apparantly conisdering the Sharks or the Pens according to some reports), then it's a different story. Esecially if they can get Malkin and Morozov over from Russia.

Their defense is gonna be brutal for the oppsition for sure, adding Forberg was great for them too but they did give up: Roenick (for peanuts), LeClair and Amonte (not to mention losing Recchi already last year). So I think it's hard to say how much better than normal they will be. I think they will probably finish near the top of the Eastern Conference but hardly a lock for the cup at this time. Their Goaltending is still a question mark as always, especially if they lose Burke.

Edit:

There are reports (from FAN 960 in Calgary and Team 1260 in Edmonton) that they are trading Handzus to the Oilers for Marty Reasoner and a draft pick.

Edit2: Seems the rumour has been quashed. So no trade at this time

If that's true they have gutted their offense

Rumour there lists Kariya possibly going to Edmonton. Of course in the past few days he's said he was going to Montreal, San Jose, possibly Pittsburgh and now Edmonton so *shrugs*

An off season due to injury does not meen Karyia is washed up and a bum.

He was dogging it before he got hurt and when he got healthy again. I don't know if was pissed that Selanne wasn't playing on his line or what but it was obvious the guy wasn't giving full effort. Maybe he'll return to posting 30 goals a season again with the rule changes but I doubt it.

Kariya, if he can stay healthy could be a big time goal scorer and point producer in the "new NHL" Unfortunately, he could be concussed from a run in with a butterfly.

Nikolai Khabibulin has signed with the Blackhawks. Maybe they won't suck so much this time round.

LO fucking L

Brad MAy was just signed by the Avs.

Why LOL?

Well for those of you who might have fogetten, Brad May is one of the main players being sued by Steve Moore (sucker punchee ala Bertuzzi) So what does this say about how the Avs feel about Steve Moore.

The Preds has a nice core of awesome young players, sadly they play in a dead market with hidieous uniforms

CNM 08-06-2005 04:31 AM

Brad May? WTF is Lacroix thinking? Why not just trade for Bertuzzi himself?
