NHL 2005-2006 Season / 2006 Offseason Thread

How does everybody see the season going this year? Cup/standings predicitions, who's gonna win the scoring title. I'll post mine later.

The Gooch 09-26-2005 03:52 PM

Division Champs:

Northeast: Ottawa

Southeast: Tampa Bay

Atlantic Division: Philadelphia

Central Division: Detroit

Pacific Division: San Jose

Northwest: Edmonton

I personally think this is going to be the year for the Ottawa Senators to win the Cup. I have a great feeling with these new rules. My only concern is if Hasek gets injured. (ps I'm not saying this because I'm a homer either)

For the scoring title I'm going with Iginla.

Mike the Metal Ed 09-26-2005 03:54 PM

Sens win it all.

Gertner 09-26-2005 03:57 PM

Northeast: Ottawa

Southeast: Tampa Bay

Atlantic Division: Philadelphia

Central Division: Chicago

Pacific Division: San Jose

Northwest: Vancouver

Chicago is my surprise team. Thye have last 2003 calgary Flmaes written all over them.

Scoring title is gonna go to Joe Thornton this year in my opinion. IF by some strange reason the Leafs don't win it this year, it'll probably be Ottawa.

Nervous Ferret 09-26-2005 03:59 PM

Kapoutman 09-26-2005 10:03 PM

I will only predict that Lecavalier wins the scoring championship this year.

And Montreal will last up to the Conference Finals.

BCWWF 09-26-2005 10:06 PM

The divisions are so drastic. Like the Northwest, preseason any of those five teams could be in the playoffs, its just up to which one(s) choke. Same goes for the Northeast (minus Buffalo maybe). Then the Pacific is pretty horrible. MAKE SOME CHANGES, GIVE THE WILD A CHANCE.

road doggy dogg 09-27-2005 12:06 AM

The Wild had an eternity to make changes, but they remained totally stagnent during this "off-season". It's their own stupid fault for not improving their team while the other 25-odd teams in the league did.

BCWWF 09-27-2005 01:36 AM

Actually the Wild had a great offseason by not wasting money on any overpriced aging veterans. The teams with a bunch of stars, ie the Flyers, Avs, Wings etc., spent all their money on the first line.

Bell, Daze, Calder, Arnason, Barnaby, Lapointe, Ruutu. They have goal scorers. None of them are guys that will lead the league, but they all can get the job done.

I dunno if there is a point picking right now, the way the league is its all going to come down to which rookies/younger players step up

That being said I think Calgary and Vancouver are the two best teams in the league. and if Hasek is good then Ottawa is there too. Nashville will also win their division

And St Louis will challenge for the worst team in the league

Gertner 09-29-2005 05:07 PM

i think calgary is horribly over-rated

MoRcHeEbA 09-29-2005 08:02 PM

How so? They have a goalie who should easily be considered the next Hasek. They have arguably the best forward in Iginla. Their defense is crazy good with Regher, Warriner, Hamrlik, Ferrence, Top 3 rookie this year in Phanuef.

Iginla on a top line with Amonte and Lankow will make that probably the 2nd best line in the league. Not to mention the rule changed basically all go in Favour of Calgary in their young ways. A force to be reckoned with.

and im a canucks fan :(

Nah, Calgary is a hook and hold'em type team. Watching them last season when they were in the playoffs, that was clearly the case.

Amonte is nothing to be scared of anymore.

Anyways, the smart pick is Ottawa, although I will not be shocked to see some team bump them right off.

See I think Ottawa has been overrated much more than Calgary. I don't think anyone knows what we are going to get out of Hasek, I mean he hasn't played a full season in like 3 or 4 years.

Hey, in 1986, Montreal beat Calgary in 5 for the Cup. Stop living in the past.

...then in 1989, Calgary beat Montreal in 6 for the Cup. :(

Zen v.W.o. 09-30-2005 01:49 PM

Yes but if we're living in the past, why not gloat?

You can take the cup wins of all the canadian teams, add them up, and they still wouldnt equal our total.:y:

We fucking dominated everyone like nobody could ever do.

So, anybody remembers that time we shut up Wayne Gretzky and his team in 1993?

I take overachieving and beating two of the best teams in the league over winning in the regular season and then losing first round to a small market upset. I don't see why that is supposed to insult me?

hardly. Iginla is gonna best pressed to reach 85 points with those line mates.

Arashi Kage 10-04-2005 05:48 PM

Lemieux takes the Art Ross, becoming the oldest player to do so.

.... I wish, but hey, 2.75 points per game in preseason, if he can play like that all season and not get hurt, it just might happen.

I think that Heatley, and Spezza should be in the running for the Art Ross. Perhaps Naslund as well.

I don't think that the preseason stats give any certain idea, outside of Heatley, Spezza, and Lemieux. Iggy should end up challenging for the Rocket Richard trophy, but I don't think he'll be in the top 3 for points.

Pre Season Leaders: GP G A PTS

Spezza, Jason, Ott. 7 3 13 16
Heatley, Dany, Ott. 7 6 9 15
Sim, Jon, Phi. 7 8 6 14
Demitra, Pavol, L.A. 6 5 6 11
Lemieux, Mario, Pit. 4 2 9 11
Bochenski, Brandon, Ott. 7 6 4 10
Lupul, Joffrey, Ana. 6 4 6 10
Palffy, Zigmund, Pit. 5 4 6 10

road doggy dogg 10-04-2005 06:12 PM

I think Lemieux's goign to have a great season, for the games he plays. I expect him to play ~50-60 games, but I don't see 80-90 points being out of the picture for him. I don't think he'll be Art Ross material, but he'll be within the top 10.

And yeah, I think Spezza's gonna be huge this year

CNM 10-04-2005 10:23 PM

I predict the Avs will be a lot better than people are predicting. Not saying they're going to win the Cup, but they'll go far.

BCWWF 10-04-2005 10:41 PM

Well they still have Sakic, Hejduk, Tanguay, Selane (I think), Blake, Aebesheir, and a shit load of other players, so I hope they go far. Forsberg isn't even a major loss, he barely played because he was always injured.

CNM 10-04-2005 10:50 PM

Selanne is in Anaheim, but they have everyone else you mentioned and they added a few role players like Andrew Brunette. They're certainly not going to finish 18th in the NHL like SI predicted.

BCWWF 10-05-2005 12:53 AM

They said 18th? Just no.

CNM 10-05-2005 01:04 AM

Why are the called the "Habs"?

Mike the Metal Ed 10-08-2005 11:30 PM

Short for "Les Habitants" (and if that's incorrect, Kapoutman will know.)

Can't wait to watch the highlights tomorrow. The Sens win 5-0 and Caps 1 Thrashers 8.

Lara Emily 10-09-2005 12:54 AM

Went to the Sens home opener. Good times all around 5-0 win, Chris Neil of all people had a 2 goal game, Havlat had a beautiful shorthanded goal (he was flying tonight he had at least 4 or 5 shorthanded breakaways during the game. Furthermore I might end up getting tickets right up near the glass (row B) for the Sens/Pens game Feb 6th and the Sens/Florida game Nov 17th and seats just a little higher up for the Sens/Leafs game Dec 17th (Row H). On top of that I'm going to 5 more games as well, Sens vs Carolina Nov 15th, and then TB, Montreal and Boston at various points next year.

Great year for hockey thus far.

Arashi Kage 10-09-2005 01:10 AM

Lemieux 2 goals tonight!
Crosby 1 goal, 2 assists
Recchi 3 assists in his first home Pens game since '92.

Pens lose, but I'm happy with those individual numbers.

LoDownM 10-09-2005 02:05 AM

Despite there losing, the Pens are looking good this year imo.
