Alice in Chains - Jar Flies is the Greatest Album of all time

Imo.

Discuss.

RP 12-14-2005 05:18 AM

Nutshell

We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home

My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can't be my own
I'd feel better dead

Nutshell is the only song thats ever made me cry a tear

Zen v.W.o. 12-14-2005 05:20 AM

Dirt owns it but you cant go wrong with any AIC, tbh.

Eunos 12-14-2005 05:23 AM

Dirt and Facelift are better IMHO

RP 12-14-2005 05:23 AM

If your feeling all out grunge then you go with Dirt, but if your feeling a album that will just touch every emotion you have. Jar Flies is amazing.

RP 12-14-2005 05:25 AM

Rottin Apple and Nutshell are just flat out amazing songs. Then its complimented by 5 songs that could be singles on anyones albums.

Zen v.W.o. 12-14-2005 05:27 AM

I guess I could agree with that. Although, you would feel emotional to whatever album happens to have left an imprint on you as well. Dirt takes me back a ways, although it was originally "man in the box" that turned me on to them.

And yes Nutshell is an amzing song.

I totally agree with you. I mean i'm not declaring it the greatest ever period. Just IMO. When i listen to Jar Flies i seriously go into another world that i cant even explain. I'm a huge fan of music period. I own 762 cd's ranging from rock , rap, country, grunge, 50's 60's 70's 80's 90's. I have alot of great albums. I listen to music every minute i'm at home. No joke. Nothing has touched me deeper then Jar Flies as far as music goes. I cant even describe it. Alice in Chains is probably my favorite band of all time and Jar Flies is the one album i could not possibly imagine living without.

The song that got me hooked to AIC was " Down in a Hole"

RP 12-14-2005 05:39 AM

If i had to rate my favorite AIC songs it would go like this :

1) Nutshell
2) Rotten Apple
3) Bleed the Freak
4) Rooster
5) Down in a Hole

1-Man in a Box
2-Rooster
3-Down in a Hole
4-I Stay Away
5-Heaven Beside You

The Gooch 12-14-2005 08:39 AM

Too bad Jar of Flies wasn't a longer album. I totally agree that it is amazing. Then again everything AIC produced was amazing to me. Jar of Flies was special as it took AIC in a different direction. In a way it reminded me of a grunge version of REM's Automatic for the People.

Too hard to list my 5 favourite AIC tunes in order as they constantly change dependent on mood. "Down in a Hole" and "Bleed the Freak" would definitely remain consistently in the top 5 though.

RoXer 12-14-2005 04:40 PM

1- Don't Follow
2- I Stay Away
3- Would?
4- Heaven Beside You
5- Brother

RoXer 12-14-2005 04:40 PM

Who am I kidding though? I like every single one of thier songs.

El Vaquero de Infierno 12-14-2005 04:55 PM

Alice in Chains were the goods. It has to be said that few rock bands today come even close to touching them.

I cant think of one Rock band today that even comes withing the same area code as them.

RP 12-15-2005 07:00 AM

Not on Jar Flies, but I Know Something ( bout you ) is a awesome song and very underated when AIC is talked about.

RP 12-15-2005 07:04 AM

Funny thing is AIC has so many tunes like this that were never released as singles that are truly amazing. AIC are one of the few bands that I have no problem listening to their albums front to back without even the consideration of skipping a track.

Although it is just an EP, I find SAP doesn't get much hype for its greatness. It is a solid little compilation.

Baio 12-15-2005 07:33 PM

Dirt is sick and Jar of Flies rules,

but wtf is the deal with Whale & Wasp and Swing on This. Those songs suck the big one

Baio 12-15-2005 07:41 PM

Also I was listening to Jar of Flies as I opened this thread. Did you guys know the album was recorded and mastered in only 5 days? True story.

I finally have a reason to like you rectal pertruder.

Fuck yes. Toss in Sea of Sorrow also. But the songs you mentioned are the best.

I made an AiC cd and listen to that shit ALL of the fucking time. Down in a Hole gets played more than anything else.

And Man in the Box reminds me of ECW.

JiM PolPot v.W.o. 02-21-2006 10:57 PM

The world needs another band as good as Alice in Chains. Current music blows compared to 1992 grunge.

Zen v.W.o. 02-21-2006 11:16 PM

Jim, you speak the truth.

asphyXy 02-22-2006 01:51 AM

Yeah, Nutshell is the saddest song in the world.

D Mac 02-22-2006 01:58 AM

Layne Staley's voice was one of a kind.

Kris P Lettus 02-22-2006 03:41 AM

Their Unplugged album is G.O.A.T..

There MTV Unplugged Album is great too. Very emotional version of "Down in a Hole". Besides the songs already mentioned I enjoy:

Rain When I Die
Queen of the Rodeo
Hate to Feel

We Die Young
Got Me Wrong
Would?

And a shit load of others. I got the AiC Music Bank last year for Xmas and I haven't been able to put it down yet.

Does the music bank have the Unplugged album in it?

AIC was successful because you felt Layne's pain when he sang. Don't believe me, tell me how you feel watching the Unplugged stuff? It hurts so bad knowing that everyone knew Layne was messed up, yet he couldn't be or wasn't helped.

A replacement singer can never have what Layne had with his audience.

You definitely have me interested dude. Do they have a website that has cover songs or do they just tour and you managed to catch them?

I think the point of the replacement singer is that the rest of the band wants to move on. They enjoy working together.

No, it only has a few songs from the Unplugged performance. It does have some different mixes of a few songs, and demo versions of a couple also. I suggest getting both the Music Bank and the Unplugged Album.

I wouldn't want to prevent the band from moving on, I just personally would rather see them drop the AIC name if they find a replacement. AIC means something special to me and Layne's voice is a large component of the whole essence of AIC in my opinion.

Pulling a Velvet Revolver is how I would like to see it done.

RP 02-26-2006 10:01 PM

To Cantrell's credit. His voice is not far from equal on all the great AIC albums. He just didnt get enough credit.

RP 02-26-2006 11:25 PM

Supposedly there is lots of talks that Maynard might be vocalist for this tour they plan on starting. Probably just a rumor, but when he did a charity concert for tsunami victims, he was a natural from what i heard. Fit Staleys role about as good as you can get. I'm not sure how he would do this with a new TOOL album coming up and APC stuff in the works. But it would be awesome.

RP 02-27-2006 12:02 AM

Or i guess they're saying William Duval will be singing for the new AIC.

Either way. As long as Cantrell keeps writing, this is all I care about.

JiM PolPot v.W.o. 02-27-2006 01:42 AM

I just downloaded the rest of the songs from Jar of Flies that I didn't have.

Holy shit. There is some fucking gold on this one. I didn't even know about Whale and Wasp.

JiM PolPot v.W.o. 02-28-2006 12:49 AM

Just downloaded more AiC songs. I keep finding more gold.

Does anyone else agree with me that they are the best of the grunge bands?

I agree, I find them to be more versatile than any of the other "big Seattle grunge bands"(ie Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden). A great touch of the mainstream in Cantrell and the dark undergound with Staley.

Oh and BTW RP, if you like Nutshell as it is on Jar Flies, you NEED to hear it on the Unplugged album, but the most moving performance on that album is Down in a Hole.

RP 02-28-2006 06:23 PM

I've heard the album. I love The Killer is Me
