Sony to lose $1 billion on Playstation 3

http://www.twistedpolygon.net/content/view/102/50

Yeah they will make up for it i'm sure. But it's still a pretty steep price to pay.

Buzzkill 12-15-2005 11:53 PM

They've got some very smart people heading this project, I'm sure they know what they're doing...for our sake at least.

Kane Knight 12-15-2005 11:53 PM

NO surprise.

Gonzo 12-16-2005 12:05 AM

Not really important, they'll make their money.

Funky Fly 12-16-2005 02:05 AM

If the PS3 is as flimsy as the PS2, I will be pissed.

road doggy dogg 12-16-2005 02:58 AM

Yeah but even then, doesn't ps2 have a warranty or w/e? Just send it back and get it fixed for like $40 or something

Hired Hitman 12-16-2005 03:09 AM

Do you throw it around or something? My playstation 2 is in perfect condition, why? Because I take care when using it :|

The laser went out in two of them, and the third just got knocked off the entertainment center by the classic tripping over the controller cord in the middle of the floor. :|

Hired Hitman 12-16-2005 03:33 AM

No warranty on the first two?

Tripping over the controller cord :| Jesus christ, you know the playstation is expensive, right? ;)

Disturbed316 12-16-2005 09:26 AM

What the hell have people been doing to their PS2's?

I've got one of the first ones released and have never had a problem with it.

McDoogle 12-16-2005 01:09 PM

Yea same with me...I have never ever experenced one problem with it.

Oxstar 12-16-2005 03:36 PM

And it'll sell billions, because people are too stupid to learn from history.

Yep, I'll probably just wait until the initial rush for them is over maybe the price will drop after a while.

NeoGeo 12-16-2005 06:19 PM

what's interesting is that both the ps1 and ps2 were known to have problems (ps2 seemed to have less at least). ps1 had a problem where it began to skip a lot; this was evident mainly in the first batch of ps1. sony never acknowledged this or replaced the faulty ones though, which prompted lots of customers to buy new ps1 and returning the damaged one causing headaches for retailers.
ps2 problems are already described in earlier posts but fortunately it wasn't as bad as the previous generation.

Actually it was worse in the PS2's case.

While the skipping/loading/spring issues were a big deal, DRE's were a massively widespread problem. Even better, it was a known flaw in the system at launch. Sony sat on it, hoping to make some money anyway. It even survived their first declaration that they had "fixed" the problem. Too bad...

So far the PSP is bucking the trend though.

Joey Slugs 12-16-2005 08:03 PM

last I heard was that it was costing them about $550 per PS3 and they were going to sell them for about $599 when it is released.

If it costs them 550, no way will they charge 599. That's what this is about. They will take a hit again, because they want to make money off all the software sales.

that's interesting. me and my buddies never had a problem with our ps2s... then again we bought it about 2 years after its original release to avoid any problems like last time so we probably missed any real issues. on the psp wasn't there a problem with one of the buttons hitting the screen display?

Hitting the display? I'm not aware of it. Or do you mean the sticky square button thing?

Many people did not have problems with the PS2, but a lot of people did. Far mroe than should be reasonably expected in a situation like this. Sony set up repairs for the DRE flaw, and a procedure in which it'd be repaired for free, in reaction to an impending class action lawsuit. This was big shit. And it didn't affect every PS2, but it affected alot of them.

I don't even know how accurate that was. It's not a design flaw in the usual sense, and apparently doesn't impede gameplay.

LoDownM 12-17-2005 01:14 AM

I'm only on my 3rd ps2. Sold my first one for gas money when I was broke :o Sold my 2nd one for an Xbox.

RBM 12-17-2005 09:43 PM

I'm still on my first one from 2001. It's also my only DVD player. It's been good to me so far.

Requiem 12-18-2005 06:09 AM

It took me two broken PS2's to get a good one. Bought one from WalMart... fan didn't work and it overheated 5 minutes into a game. Took it back.. got one from Best Buy. Disc Read Error. Brought it back and got ANOTHER one. Had it ever since, and havn't had problems.

Silent 12-18-2005 02:42 PM

I had my original one for years, and it just broke like a month ago, I bought a new one.

Funky Fly 12-18-2005 03:50 PM

I've had mine for barely a month. Not broken yet.

The Mackem 12-20-2005 04:55 AM

That's because you are quite clever for an America/Brit/Canadian/Misc

UmbrellaCorporation 12-20-2005 10:23 PM

Had my PS2 about a year and 7 months with no problems whatsoever.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 12-21-2005 03:28 AM

My PS2 feel off a desk and still works. I've had it for a long ass time too.

Did you just imply that I am partly American? :'(

ddpBANG 12-22-2005 03:43 AM

I've had my PS2 for about 2 years and haven't had a single problem. Now that I'm broke though, I'm expecting one.

CharismaInjection 12-22-2005 06:13 AM

eh, they'll make it back once PS3 is released.

Filipe1 12-23-2005 10:35 PM

I am not all that surprised that they would lose a large amount of money on the systems themselves. Most companies would anyway, because the money isnt in the systems themselves but on the games, and the additional hardware. Even games made by other companies, I am sure that Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft still get a cut from those companies when the games are made.

Reall it might seem like a steep loss, but don't be surprised if by this time next year, they will have made it all back, and more.
