Fantasy MLB

Yeah, who is playing fantasy baseball this year? I wanted to play last year but I didn't get in the league for whatever reason. The league I usually play in isn't happening this year so yeah.

Dragon 02-02-2006 11:02 PM

Yeah, I wouldn't mind playing this year.

RoXer 02-02-2006 11:33 PM

I managed the league last year and I think I'll do it again this year. Less stat categories though probly.

RoXer 02-02-2006 11:34 PM

MIZ, YOU ARE PLAYING IN OUR LEAGUE THIS YEAR

RoXer 02-02-2006 11:49 PM

Matter of fact...

League ID: 5621

I just left it at default settings for now because I'm going to bed. I'll edit the settings this weekend and get feedback later.

FakeLaser 02-02-2006 11:49 PM

Do you play roto or H2H?

RoXer 02-02-2006 11:50 PM

H2H

FakeLaser 02-02-2006 11:52 PM

Word. Never played H2H before, only roto. Oh well, should be interesting.

MVP 02-03-2006 12:00 AM

Yeah I'm in

RoXer 02-03-2006 12:06 AM

So Dave and I are running two H2H leagues...

I dunno how we're doing this.

OssMan 02-03-2006 12:15 AM

what? sign up isn't even open or are you using something besides yahoo?

DaveWadding 02-03-2006 12:16 AM

sign up is open.

Supreme Olajuwon 02-03-2006 12:34 AM

it's on

Joey Slugs 02-03-2006 01:20 AM

I have a H2H league that I run every year. If anyone is interested let me know. I'll have it up and running by early March.

MVP 02-03-2006 06:20 PM

I might do both, but that'll mean I'm in 3 leagues ause my friends are doing one also. I DON'T KNOW

The Miz 02-03-2006 07:12 PM

What does H2H and rotis mean

(I joined both leagues)

Nervous Ferret 02-03-2006 07:20 PM

Head to head
Rotisserie

Head to head as in you play somebody different each week, whoever scores more points between the two over the week gets a "win" and the loser gets a "loss". Best record at end of year is the winner.

Roto is set up differently. There are categories (Hr, 2B, #B ect ect ect) If there are 10 teams and 10 categories, the max # of points on a given day is 100. You are pitted against everybody in each category. So 10 teams, and your team has the most hrs out of all 10. You recieve 10 pts. lowest 1 pt. So your score for the most part changes daily.

Is anybody running a roto league yet? If you guys do start one, lemme know. Or I'll start it myself. I'm not a big H2H fan :o

Are you guys seriously not going to use OBP/SLG

Nervous Ferret 02-03-2006 07:27 PM

dunno I think RoXer said he has them at default settings before he gets a chance to changed them

0 weekend and/or draft times past 2pm left for ROto, so I went ahead and created a league for TPWW

I made the draft Feb 24 which is during presidents week, so I dunno how many of you get off for that. Only other bearable times are March 21 and 22 st like 2 pm which isnt very courteous to the west coast!

FakeLaser 02-04-2006 01:06 AM

Yeah I'll play the roto league too.

RoXer 02-04-2006 01:16 AM

I do so shitty in roto league, I dunno why I try. But I'll try anyway.

I'm putting off editing the stats and stuff untill next weekend. I have to finish my college app this weekend. And watch football. And golf. And hockey.

Nervous Ferret 02-04-2006 11:15 PM

Yahoo cleared up all the draft times so gimme what you guys want. Anytime except Mondays and Tuesdays and like the 9-14 ov march is good for me

FakeLaser 02-05-2006 10:40 AM

Sundays are probably best for me.

If not, then any day after like 6:00ish. Except Friday and Saturday.

Yeah, join my league,

ALSO, I kinda edited the stat categories and positions. I'm maxing out categories, 15 for batters and 15 for pitchers like last year.

The Miz 02-05-2006 03:44 PM

Only 2 SP? Axe the IF and add one more SP.

Also HLD is a gay stat

The Miz 02-05-2006 03:46 PM

A, E, and FPCT are all useless as well.

RoXer 02-05-2006 04:11 PM

Well GEE Miz, I'll go look for the "Effort Given on a Play" stat. BRB.

RoXer 02-05-2006 04:13 PM

Yeah, no, doesn't exsist. I guess we'll just use those for now.

Except maybe switch A with PO. And yeah, dunno how HLDs got selected.

RoXer 02-05-2006 04:15 PM

And there are 4 SPs. Dunno what you're talking bout.

RoXer 02-05-2006 04:15 PM

Oh. The 2 SPs is what I switched it from.

The Miz 02-05-2006 04:19 PM

Why even bother with fielding stats if the only ones available suck?

RoXer 02-05-2006 04:22 PM

Because I don't want it to be offensive minded. Guys like Craig Counsell and Mark Kotsay will have much more value this way.

YOUR Hero 02-05-2006 04:30 PM

HLD may seem like a 'gay stat' but it opens up the fantasy game to more pitchers. We've been doing this for years now and know what works better than others.

It also 'evens out' the batting to pitching stats. There are so many batting categories available, that it makes the game too balanced on offensive categories than it does pitching categories. Holds is a must.

No, Mark Kotsay never gets any assists because no one runs on him. Remember that time he made 2 errors in a game last year, one of them Kendall's fault and the other one Crosby's?

17 assists led the league in 2005. Wanna take a guess which defensive dynamo had them? (Hint: he likes to go to bars with Enrique Wilson)

I'm all for more pitching stats; but hold is an awful, awful stat.

RoXer 02-05-2006 04:35 PM

I'm on the fence between Holds and K/9 innings.

YOUR Hero 02-05-2006 04:36 PM

Assists from the outfield mean nothing, I don't care if an outfielder gets 40 in a season, that's nothing compared to what a 2B or SS will get, even an infielder off the bench is more valuable in that category than an everyday outfielder...

That's like comparing OBP and sacrifice flies. Please go with K per 9

I've put the IF position mostly to be used by a defensive player.

nah.

It makes more pitchers in the league valuable. Say for example you have no saves guy, you can at least build you RP position with Holds guys.
Dimensions are good. Forget the fact it's a stat hardly recognized in MLB circles.

Meh, we'll see what everyones take on it is. I think it gives relievers a bit more value, personally.

YOUR Hero 02-05-2006 05:06 PM

I hope you're going to simplfy things in the end, catergory wise. IMO, there are far, far too many at the moment.

The Miz 02-05-2006 05:08 PM

Well then I can just draft a loogy like Damaso Marte who sucks but only faces one batter so he picks up a ton of holds. As long as you don't blow the lead you get a hold. I don't know how many times last year a releiver came in with a 4 run lead, got one guy out and gave up 4 hits and 3 runs, and got credited with a hold.

RoXer 02-05-2006 05:10 PM

Really? I thought I had done 15 for batters and 15 for pitchers in last years too.

The Miz 02-05-2006 05:12 PM

Um, maybe that 1B's get 5 times more than any one else? Whoever drafts the 1B that's real team gets a lot of groundballs will win that category.

Scott Hatteberg, before he was permanently moved to DH, led the league in putouts because he played behind Saarloos (extreme sinkerballer), Haren and Harden (who feature the splitter as the go-to pitch).

Scott Hatteberg was also possibly the worst defensive first baseman in the MLB last year.

YOUR Hero 02-05-2006 05:15 PM

I know OPS has become a favourite MLB stat but in fantasy baseball it's just a padded stat for power guys. Same as 2B. I like 3B because it values speed at the plate. Gives speed 2 decent categories, but even that I could see(3B) being dropped in order to keep things simple. Again, the same holds true for walks (as a batting category) it favours the big hitter as they are walked by pitchers. I would also consider errors a stat not worth keeping.

Complete games and shut outs, because they are few and far between are not worth the space. GiDP is a new stat that might have some value. Total bases and k/9 are other stats not worth keeping for the sake of simplicity.

Those are my thoughts.

I'm looking for interactive debate, this wasn't criticism of the stats chosen. I'll go with whatever the majority decides.

The Miz 02-05-2006 05:22 PM

I think OBP and SLG should be two different categories and OPS should be axed. This way, a guy like Luis Castillo who has no power but gets on base a ton will not be penalized for having an average OPS.

Triples I like. Walks definately need to be in there. 5'10" Brian Giles led the league in them last year, his amazing eye shouldn't be penalized because guys like Adam Dunn and Barry Bonds get walked due to pitchers being scared of them. I'm too lazy to look but if IBB is on there that's definately one you could get rid of.

I agree with getting rid of CG and SHO, and I agree with GIDP (for pitchers, not hitters). If you give up a lot of hits but cancel it out by getting ground ball double plays you should be rewarded for that. Total bases is already covered in other categories, K/9 I could live without but it's better than alot of pitching stats.

GO/AO (ground outs per 1 air out) would be one I'd consider adding

Adder 02-06-2006 05:54 PM

Holds need to stay.

Nervous Ferret 02-06-2006 06:18 PM

holds make people like Tom Gordon valuable, he wouldn't be worht a roster spot if it wasn't in.

Nervous Ferret 02-06-2006 06:18 PM

It is a pretty gay stat tho

Adder 02-06-2006 07:06 PM

46% on the gay-o-meter. Yet it still deserves a spot.

Had an autopick draft with a bunch of guys from some other messageboard.........my offense is terrible, but my pitching is awesome. I should be able to deal for at least one huge bat.

C - J. Kendall
1B - J. Morneau

Just had a 12 team draft for my public league, pretty happy. Somehow I got Hafner in the 6th and Melvin Mora in the 14th round.

C - Victor Martinez
1B - Chase Utley
2B - Jorge Cantu
3B - Melvin Mora
SS - Jhonny Peralta
OF - Carl Crawford
OF - Aubrey Huff
OF - Garret Anderson
Utl - Travis Hafner
BN - Bill Hall
BN - Jose Guillen

SP - Carlos Zambrano
SP - Cliff Lee
SP - Scott Kazmir
SP - Jeremy Bonderman
SP - Joe Blanton
SP - Brad Radke
RP - Joe Nathan
RP - Brian Fuentes
RP - Kyle Farnsworth
RP - Justin Duscherer

Would like to move Utley to second... trying to trade Cantu for either Ryan Howard or Paul Konerko. I could use another big bat, though every one of my hitters is capable of 20 HR and 80 RBI, so I guess I'm ok there.

Made a few moves to try and bolster the offense, they won't be official until tomorrow....hopefully both will go through:

First off, I'm getting rid of Justin Morneau and picking up Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals. Zimmerman is a real sleeper but he should hit for a high average and potential power as well.

I'm also going to try and drop Guillen and pick up Brad Wilkerson...who should have a much better year now that he is healthy and in the Bandbox of Arlington. Wilky will be in the hunt to be the guy at 1B, with Hillenbrand and Shelton challenging.

And of course, I should be able to add at least one sure-thing bat to my team, by dealing one of my closers (I'm shopping Lidge the most...but I'd deal any of them if the price was right)

RoXer 02-22-2006 06:59 PM

The Miz 02-22-2006 09:23 PM

Wilkerosn, Shelton, Hillenbrand in that order

RoXer 02-25-2006 04:39 PM

OssMan 02-26-2006 08:50 PM

Just traded Alex Rodriguez away for Melvin Mora and Roy Halladay

The Miz 02-26-2006 08:53 PM

Why? A-Rod is probably the most statistical player in baseball, and he's right in the middle of his prime. Him and Pujols are unquestionably the two best fantasy players. Mora's numbers took a big decline last year and Halladay hasn't been healthy in 2 years. Both are great players but I don't see how they are worth A-Rod.

OssMan 02-26-2006 09:14 PM

I hate A-Rod and Mora is one of my favorite players. I like to root for my fantasy players but I want A-Rod to K every time he has an at bat. Also, my pitching staff is really nasty as it is, and even if Halladay gets injured again it won't even be that big of a blow considering what I have.

Not a good move AssMan, I understand why you'd do it, but it's a reason that could cost you. Best hope for an off year from ARod

Awesome reasoning

YOUR Hero 02-26-2006 11:15 PM

should have went with Pujols then, and drafted Mora in the next 4-5th round

FakeLaser 02-26-2006 11:35 PM

Yeah, pretty terrible move.

I somehow got Mora in the 14th round of my draft though which was pretty sweet.

FakeLaser 02-26-2006 11:36 PM

Just traded Cantu and Garret Anderson for Adam Dunn and Lyle Overbay in my league. Pretty good deal I'd say.

Goddamn I hate this league...pretty sure most guys haven't even checked their teams, allowing some ripoff deals to go down.

This one guy wanting to dump his Yanks dealt Jeter to one team for Jhonny Peralta...Peralta's good and all, but Jeter will give you more of everything

And then he dealt Posada to another team for Ramon Hernandez...:|

Neither of those trades have been vetoed...in fact, I think I'm the only one who checked.

---

Anyways, still looking to acquire a big bat...but the one trade I offered (I pry Papi away from an awesome offensive team with horrid pitching at the expense of Lidge and another guy) got no response yet, I doubt the guy's checked his team. He'll probably counter-offer with me giving up Mariano, but I'd do it since I'd still be getting a ridiculous bat and keeping 3 great closers.

Also, considering picking up either Pierzynski or Barajas to upgrade over Kendall. I like Barajas' potential in that park after last year...but I highly doubt he repeats his performance.

You're not actually playing Casey over Sexson are you

RoXer 03-05-2006 04:16 PM

Yeah, what does everyone think of the new stats?

The Miz 03-05-2006 06:43 PM

Assists has to go. Others could be improved but thats just nitpicking, need to get rid of assists though.

The Miz 03-11-2006 02:16 PM

Any way we could push these drafts a couple days later? I can't make 2 of the 3

RoXer 03-11-2006 02:44 PM

Can you make mine?

YOUR Hero 03-11-2006 03:28 PM

I'm happy enough with the catergories.
