2006 Winter Olympics

Let the games begin!

Opening ceremonies were today

Apart from the Hockey, I can't say I'm too 'in' to the games. Anyone got something they're looking forward to?

Loose Cannon 02-10-2006 11:17 PM

only hockey. when does that start?

OssMan 02-10-2006 11:20 PM

nah freestyle skiing "aerials" the best even at winter olympics

Zen v.W.o. 02-10-2006 11:21 PM

I think I like the winter olympics better then the summer. It has Hockey, and also other sports Canada is good at. Summer just has the sprints really.

Hockey I think starts on Monday or tuesday. The players for men arent there until sunday anyways.

Loose Cannon 02-10-2006 11:28 PM

I remember that one year Belarus upset Sweden. That was the greatest hockey game ever for me. I've never been more into a game then that one.

Gertner 02-10-2006 11:32 PM

hockey starts wednesday i believe. btw Czechs are gonna win the gold in hockey

i like the winter olympics better than the summer

D Mac 02-11-2006 01:18 AM

Curling

BCWWF 02-11-2006 03:03 AM

I am pretty excited. Bode Miller is the man.

Snowboarding sucks though.

D Mac 02-11-2006 05:54 AM

Men's short program figure skating is the shit.

Linkbowler 02-11-2006 12:06 PM

USA-Switzerland Women's hockey on right now.

D Mac 02-11-2006 04:37 PM

I wonder how women's hockey players are in bed?

Is he the guy that's always getting in trouble for no-showing and saying things people deem offensive?

BCWWF 02-11-2006 08:26 PM

I don't know if he no-shows, but he got in trouble for saying that he raced while hung over once. He is the man though, crazy ski bum. He is crazy on the slopes, he goes too fast though so he falls sometimes.

Loose Cannon 02-11-2006 08:29 PM

are you guys watching this fucking luge? Holy shit

Loose Cannon 02-11-2006 08:30 PM

anytime I see a sport involving a sled and an ice hill, I think of Cool Runnings

Yeah that's the guy I was thinking of. He's a snowboarder? I thought he was a skier

YOUR Hero 02-11-2006 10:50 PM

Just watched Canada win a Gold medal in mogul skiing, or something to that effect.

GO CANADA!

Luge and bobsled fall into the same category as NASCAR: High-speed and very dangerous, yet still boring as batshit. It's a bad combination.

BCWWF 02-12-2006 11:23 AM

Hero, sorry about that, my comment that I hate snowboard halfpipe was supposed to be seperate.

The snowboard halfpipe is seriously so stupid though. They don't do anything but spin in "different holds." At least skateboarding they can move fast and flip their boards too. That is cool, snowboarding isn't.

YOUR Hero 02-12-2006 02:19 PM

Bode Miller didn't medal in the Downhill skiing today... and was spotted out drinking the night before. LOL, way to go.

Kwan dropped out of the Olympics I read

YOUR Hero 02-12-2006 03:21 PM

Holy crap. That Appollo Ono guy from the speed skating event, just screwed himself. He's was in second place in the qualifying round, which is good enough to qualify for the finals. Anyway, he got gredy and tried to pass the other skater and he lost his balance and ended up finishing 4th.

toxic rooster 02-12-2006 04:56 PM

LOL, is that the same Oh No from the Steven Bradbury thing last time?

YOUR Hero 02-12-2006 05:32 PM

not sure what that means, Gooner

toxic rooster 02-13-2006 03:07 AM

Steven Bradbury, Australia's first ever winter olympics gold medallist. He was in the final of some speed skating thing and was coming last in the final turn when all the other skaters took each other out and he was so far back he didn't get caught up in it, stayed up and won the race.

I remember there being some guy named Ono ("Oh No!") in that race who was the raging favourite too

toxic rooster 02-13-2006 03:11 AM

http://www.elitesports.com.au/new/at...mages/011a.jpgSpeed skater Steven Bradbury created history in Salt Lake City when he became the first Australian to win a Winter Olympic Gold Medal.
His remarkable and unlikely victory was achieved after a spectacular final-lap spill took out his four rivals. Bradbury threw his arms up in disbelief and smiled as he crossed the finish line.
The four-time Olympian hails from sun-drenched Brisbane, and followed his father into the sport. He was a member of the 5000m relay team that won Bronze in Lillehammer - Australia's first Olympic medal.
He has helped finance his skating career through his partnership in Revolutionary Boot Company - manufacturers of speed skating boots. Among his clients is Apollo Anton Ohno, ironically the favourite for the race Bradbury won.
His gold medal win was not entirely as fortuitous as many would believe. Bradbury knew his limitations and also the unpredictable nature of short track racing.
Half the battle is staying on your blades, and Bradbury did just that, right when it really counted.
Dubbed "the luckiest gold medallist", Bradbury won fans the world over for the honesty and humility he showed after the win.
He saw his victory as reward not for one race, but for a decade of hard slog that has included more than his share of misfortune.
In Norway, 1994, a race accident led to him being impaled on a skate and creating a cut so extensive he lost 4 litres of blood and required 111 stitches. He was extremely lucky to survive.
A training mishap in 2000 broke his neck and forced him to spend six weeks in a halo brace.
Steven Bradbury again fought his way back, and two years later that neck was in the headlines again - only this time it was supporting an Olympic Gold Medal.

Supreme Olajuwon 02-13-2006 03:36 AM

The Czechs might win gold in hockey just because David Vyborny is their captain.

YOUR Hero 02-13-2006 09:56 AM

Gooner, yes, I remember that race now. This Ono dude is turning out to be a big bust. Crumbling under the pressure or something. I'm sure he'll win some medals in other events, but damn, he sure seems to blow it alot.

toxic rooster 02-13-2006 06:17 PM

Apollo Anton OH NO

D Mac 02-14-2006 01:46 AM

He will be back. Shit happens.

CNM 02-14-2006 02:14 AM

I saw Ohno in a race last night. Looked like he half-assed it for most of the laps and then just turned it on really late. WTF is up with that

D Mac 02-16-2006 05:25 AM

http://www.nbcolympics.com/medals/1599001/detail.html

Medal count so far.

JT1 02-17-2006 08:40 AM

it's all about the brits. not only are we the bomb at curling(surely the most dull sport ever?) but we got our 1st medal of the games yesterday in the skeleton bob - sliding down a mile of ice at 80mph headfirst on a tray:lol:

Zen v.W.o. 02-17-2006 03:27 PM

2 more medals for Canada today, puts us in a 3 way tie for second.

btw, Swedes upset the yanks in womens hockey. Now we cant run up the score on them.:(

D Mac 02-17-2006 03:45 PM

USA still has the most golds.

YOUR Hero 02-17-2006 11:38 PM

It seems to me the USA is having a lot of issues in these olympics.

McDoogle 02-17-2006 11:45 PM

They wouldn't be American if they wouldn't complain.

D Mac 02-18-2006 01:10 AM

I don't follow.

YOUR Hero 02-18-2006 09:03 AM

complain? No.

Just getting beat, failing, falling, withdrawing... I don't recall anyone complaining.

YOUR Hero 02-18-2006 09:57 AM

he Canadians play the Swiss in Hockey. The Swiss are taking tons of penalties so far, but there is still no score.

Loose Cannon 02-18-2006 02:24 PM

hey, I didn't see the hockey game today. Did Canada win?

Loose Cannon 02-18-2006 02:25 PM

I think they played the Swiss or something

samichna 02-18-2006 02:28 PM

Switzerland won 2-0.

Loose Cannon 02-18-2006 02:28 PM

oh is that so.

samichna 02-18-2006 02:48 PM

Yeah, the Swiss are doing well. They beat the Czechs too.

YOUR Hero 02-18-2006 02:53 PM

Hopefully this loss is a positive for Canada, like when Sweden beat them in 2002. Got them focused. Canada isn't playing very well right now. Getting nervous.

And when the US beats them that will be a positive one too. :p

The Miz 02-18-2006 05:17 PM

Maybe US should try to beat Slovakia and Latvia first

YOUR Hero 02-18-2006 06:13 PM

Holy Fuck, the USA/Slovakia game is awesome. Way more end to end action than the Canada/Swiss game.

I'm freaking out watching it.

YOUR Hero 02-18-2006 06:14 PM

2-1 Slovakia with less than a minute to play. USA has pulled their goalie.

YOUR Hero 02-18-2006 06:17 PM

Best game I've seen yet these olympics. I hate Tkachuck so much that I cannot root for the USA (plus their a mian Canada rival) but damn, I was almost cheering for them rite thurrr kid.

D Mac 02-18-2006 06:33 PM

So what happened.

The Miz 02-18-2006 06:36 PM

USA lost but this game was like 4 hours ago

Jesus Shuttlesworth 02-18-2006 06:36 PM

For some reason I can't really get into the Olympics at all except for the hockey. I don't see why every 4 years I am suppose to care about skiing or any other events after not hearing anything about them for the 4 years inbetween the Olympics. Some people try to say they are representing your country, but so what? There is teams representing the United States all the time and nobodys overally excited for those teams, why should I care about the Olympics?

Zen v.W.o. 02-18-2006 07:08 PM

btw, fuck Ruutu, that piece of shit.

YOUR Hero 02-18-2006 07:25 PM

What Stima states is true. It's why I often wonder why the US and Canada don't have televised 'speed skating' or whatever like other countries do. We should be able to see these events all the time, not just once every four years. It would help the sports fundings as well.

Anyway.. Fuck you, Tkachuk.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 02-18-2006 08:50 PM

We were asked why people watch the Olympics in my Sport Marketing class, and I said because of the tradition and the fact that they are seeing people who are representing your country. The more I thought about it though, I know plenty of teams "representing" America. Like when I was high school a couple of kids I know played for some American hockey team playing in the Czech Republic. I mean technically they are representing America but nobody really cared that?

Jesus Shuttlesworth 02-18-2006 08:51 PM

Summer Olympics is a little bit more understandable, from an American prospective atleast. Track and field sports are pretty big in America (atleast where I'm from) so even though they never really show those events on TV inbetween the Olympic games, people are still fimilar with them.

The Miz 02-19-2006 02:05 AM

I can't wait for Canada/Finland. Finland looked great against the Czechs and Canada is feeling the must-win pressure, I have a feeling its going to be a great game.

The Olympics midseason is what always got me back into hockey, I barely pay attention at all the first half and watch it like its baseball the second.

YOUR Hero 02-19-2006 12:43 PM

It's 1-1 after 2 periods in the Sweden/USA game. Not anywhere near the pace of yesterdays game.

YOUR Hero 02-19-2006 03:22 PM

US lost 2-1. Good thing for them their division is so weak. Even though with a 1-2-1 record (one game to go), they still make the semi-finals.

Now Canada is getting themselves run around by the Finns so far. 1-0 early in the 1st.

MoRcHeEbA 02-19-2006 03:36 PM

if Kiprusoff was playing for finland they would be my fav to win gold. I think it's time for canada to switch the goalie 8-)

I think you can say that alot of people watch the Olympics just because you are seeing the best athletes in the world competing. So if you enjoy the sport you are seeing it preformed at its best. And the races are close, which means there is high drama and always a good chance that an underdog can win and that gets people to watch.

Another 2-0 shutout loss for Canada. They played pretty good, but not good nough to win. I'm pretty uncomfortable as a Canadian right now.

toxic rooster 02-19-2006 07:44 PM

1 point to samichna on the umlaut call.

Though doesn't the a in 'umlaut' also have an umlaut, thus creating a maze of circular logic?

I dont like these picks:

Draper..he's like carry-on luggage to the other teams stars.

Doan, always thought he was a tad over-rated.

Regehr..at first didnt mind but he sucks thus far.

Also too many bolts on this team..not enough staal.

Canada on paper has so much damn talent, but they dont really show it much. The russians are so creative with the puck and fast, and they just love to speed all around the ice..that is exciting..we play for systems..cycling..blahh....

btw, does Joe Thornton, ever fucking show up for big games? He sucks in the playoffs and he isnt that great right now, this guy should be able to show why he was chosen as an elite player.

YOUR Hero 02-20-2006 02:53 PM

I agree.

There is not enough youth on this team. Youth = energy. Even Crosby would be doing better than a Draper or a Thorton. I hate to critisize, I mean Canada could still win gold, but I do not like the chemistry of this team. Also Phenuf, he have provided some spark to this team. Staal, like you mentioned.

I think regardless of what the outcome, Canada needs to change their direction. No more Quinn as coach, no more Gretzky as GM. There needs to be a new movement in the Canadian system. Canada always gets trapped in these senerios. ONce they have sucess, they stop looking and stick with the system that last won. Well things change, 4 years is a long time and other teams evolve, we can't think we are above evolution.

Still cheering for them, but man....

The Miz 02-20-2006 03:04 PM

I predict the final outcome to be

G - Finland
S - Sweden
B - Canada
4 - Slovakia

D Mac 02-20-2006 03:19 PM

http://www.nbcolympics.com/medals/1599001/detail.html

US, Austria, and Germany are tied with 7 Golds so far.

Germany leads in all with 18 medals.

YOUR Hero 02-20-2006 11:13 PM

Canada won 20 gold medals today.

YOUR Hero 02-22-2006 11:38 AM

Do or die days now in olympic hockey. loose and you are out. Nervous time. The US is playing the Finns right now.

Zen v.W.o. 02-22-2006 11:45 AM

I bet you the swedes didnt mind losing yesterday, now they're having an easy time relatively with the swiss. Bastards.

Pulling for the Finns here.

YOUR Hero 02-22-2006 02:11 PM

Finns knocked out the Yanks.

Zen v.W.o. 02-22-2006 02:25 PM

Your Hero, I am feeling pretty nervous right now.

McLegend 02-22-2006 04:58 PM

The speed skating last night was really anticlimatic

YOUR Hero 02-22-2006 05:17 PM

Russia beat Canada, 2-0

Canada sucked. :(

Zen v.W.o. 02-22-2006 05:18 PM

And I had reason to be. Canada blew this year. Seriously.

The problem with this team was that the guys in charge of choosing the players wanted to create a good TEAM. Well this is a two week tourney, they will never be a team. You choose the best players you have to stop the puck, which they did well. And then you pick the best players you have to score the goals, which they didnt do well. Not that these players couldnt fucking score goals, they had the talent to do it, but they didnt choose enough of them, or the right one's it seems. No freakin creativity...and btw, dumping the puck does not work as well on the big ice as it does on the nhl ice...you cant play dump and chase, and all we did do was that, not to mention cycling the puck. I envied the speed and skill game of russia.

Kariya, Staal, Spezza, Sullivan, Tangauy and Marleau all would have helped.

What can you ask of guys like draper and doan and the ilk when you're down by some goals?

btw, Thronton and Bert sucked. Sooo freakin slow. Now everyone knows what the Bruins and Habs already know..Thornton doesnt do shit in big time games.

samichna 02-22-2006 05:26 PM

Canada didn't come anywhere near picking the best possible roster, and therefore didn't deserve to win. I am glad they are out.

Sickboy 02-22-2006 05:31 PM

Being a Finn, I'm starting to get nervous here. Although Finland defeated USA, they were playing very poorly today. And now they are going to face Russia which is always a hard one to win in this level. I just hope they can get their shit together and get their head back in the game because they have what it takes to win the gold. We game in second in the World Cup, now it's our turn to win.

Also, Finland is going to face Canada in the finals of curling, hopefully they can defeated Canada again, right Scott?

weather vane 02-22-2006 05:37 PM

I made so much money from the Men's Hockey already. So many dumb Canadians. Called Finland from the start.

Canada's curling team (mens) looked pretty shitty from what I've seen. I know they won big today against the USA - they stole 5 five in one end against the Yanks today. That said, even though they've looked shitty, they've found ways to win. That's why I think they have a good chance to beat anyone, including the Finns.

YOUR Hero 02-22-2006 08:10 PM
