The Official Smackdown vs Raw 2007 Thread

From IGN.com

It's WrestleMania 22 in Chicago, Illinois this weekend and to help celebrate the occasion, the folks from Yuke's, THQ, and WWE are going to make a special announcement tomorrow evening. To be revealed at the annual Superstar Challenge prior to this weekend's festivities (which includes the WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony and WrestleMania itself), the announcement will officially confirm the next iteration of the WWE videogame family, WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007.

In addition to confirmation that the game is coming to stores later this year, the most interesting piece of information actually relates to the systems on which the game is coming out -- which embrace PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions besides the expected PS2 and PSP SKUs.

This move not only marks the first time in the franchise's history that a SmackDown title will appear on two system generations at once, but also, the first time that the game will be headed to a platform other than one created by Sony.

"We are pleased to bring our highly successful WWE SmackDown vs. RAW franchise to next generation consoles," said Kelly Flock, executive vice president, THQ worldwide publishing. "As the publisher of the number one wrestling videogame brand in the world, we are eager to take this franchise to new heights by offering the game to current-generation, next-generation and handheld gamers."

"We are excited about the next groundbreaking release in the multimillion dollar SmackDown vs. RAW franchise," said Nelo Lucich, vice president of interactive, JAKKS Pacific. "WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007 combines ambitious, exciting features, such as the interactive fighting area within the crowd and a brand new analog control grappling system, which enhance the WWE videogame experience. We are confident this debut will offer a compelling sports entertainment experience for the next generation of gamers."

So what's this about a new analog control system and interactive crowd fighting? Specific details about those features are still a little vague, but we do know that gamers will be able to take their brawls into the audience just like on WWE programming, while also experiencing what THQ is calling "more realistic fighting" and "more intuitive movement." As stated earlier, though, what that means exactly we don't know.

What we do know, however, is that a number of improvements in other areas will certainly make the cut. Season Mode, for example, is said to feature "an unprecedented level of player choice" compared to previous games, while in-ring and outside-the-ring hotspots (which can be used to inflict bodily damage in special ways) have also been included. Moreover, arenas in SVR2K7 will be fully interactive to the point of supporting unspecified environmental damage and players will have the ability to take signs and other objects from fans and use them as weapons.

Speaking of weapons, there will be plenty of those too (more than in the last game) and brand new "High Impact Combination Moves" that round out each superstar's arsenal. Further enhancements, like an expanded General Manager mode, online play with voice chat support (finally!), high-definition displays for PS3 and 360, and updated rosters will also be included. Multiplayer fans should also be happy to note that up to six players will be able to wrestle each other at once for all three console iterations. Version details for the PSP, however, disc are still a mystery.

As always, there's still plenty to be learned about WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007 and we hope to bring you another update as soon we can. In the meantime, we invite you to check out the first "next-gen" screenshots of the game and remind you to check back with us again over the weekend should we learn anything more.

game looks fucking amazing!
i'll be walking through the crowds online in a 3 on 1 handicap match...:D
i wodner what the new analog system is...

Disturbed316 03-30-2006 02:44 PM

Sweaty wrestlers have never looked so good.

Extreme Angle 03-30-2006 02:46 PM

yeah lol and neither has the crowd :)
it seems that they have put as much detail in the crowd as the ydid in svr06...

D Mac 03-30-2006 03:03 PM

Well at least PS2 gets one more.

Just John 03-30-2006 03:03 PM

Did I see....a crutch?

Extreme Angle 03-30-2006 03:07 PM

:) and it comes out at the end of 2006!

Just John 03-30-2006 03:09 PM

That'll be the game I get when I get the PS3 in June

Disturbed316 03-30-2006 03:15 PM

Dunno whether I'm gonna hang on for the PS3 version or stick with the PS2 version. This all depends on when the PS3 is actually out over here.

June of next year? That's a long wait. I couldn't take it.

Dark-Slicer Diago 03-30-2006 03:18 PM

great pic Disturbed, thanks

Disturbed316 03-30-2006 03:21 PM

Yeah, I did the best I could to get a couple of images off the screen, those are the ones that came out best.

Extreme Angle 03-30-2006 03:23 PM

this is one fo those games, its a "getitthedayitcomesouter"
i will get ps3 as soon as i can and get this and play it :)

Disturbed316 03-30-2006 03:24 PM

Depending on how much PS3 games are, I may get both versions. Just because I can.

D Mac 03-30-2006 03:26 PM

They better have more legends. Including Mr. Perfect.

McDoogle 03-30-2006 03:32 PM

Wow, that looks incredible.

Disturbed316 03-30-2006 03:32 PM

FIRST SERIOUS QUESTION OF THE THREAD!

Who do you want in as legends? My list is

- Mr Perfect
- Macho Man Randy Savage
- Owen Hart
- Ultimate Warrior (just to beat the shit out of him)
- Jake Roberts FOR REAL THIS TIME
- Doink the Clown (for comedy)
- Axe and Smash from Demolition
- Earthquake and Typhoon

Thats all for now. Probably change it a million times before I'm happy though.

McDoogle 03-30-2006 03:33 PM

I wonder though what the PS2 graphics look like because I kinda find it hard to believe that the PS2 can put out graphics like that.

D Mac 03-30-2006 03:39 PM

EVIL Doink.

I think it's going to be like Fight Night Round 3. While the graphics on the PS2 are really at the limits, it will never get near the awesomeness of the next gen consoles.

McDoogle 03-30-2006 03:45 PM

FNR3 for ps2 was graphically better then SvR 2006 so it should look fantastic. Hopefully.

Extreme Angle 03-30-2006 03:58 PM

Wonder if they improve the royal rumble throwing out meter...

Disturbed316 03-30-2006 04:18 PM

I think it will do, due to the new analogue grapple system.

Dark-Slicer Diago 03-30-2006 04:24 PM

just like Disturbed, I'll probably get both ps2 and ps3 versions since I have the money to spend

I'm going to limit myself to people who have never been legends in an SD game.

Big John Studd
Bob Backlund
Bobby Heenan
Demolition (and, if there are alternate costumes, the Repo Man getup for Smash)
Jesse Ventura
Mr. Perfect
Randy Savage
Ricky Steamboat
Terry Funk

Costume Soundracks, oh yes. Six Player XB Live, oh yes. Now Joey Mayne can destroy all you fools and become TPWW Champion!

I'm loving the look of it already. Great graphics so far, cant wait for more info.

V 03-31-2006 03:24 AM

They need to get the game on cube/revolution as well :(

Other than that no complaints, and I can't wait. I wont be buying a PS3, so I will get it on PS2. I wonder what the difference between the two versions will be, only graphics, or more than that? Gotta be more...

Drakul 03-31-2006 03:26 AM

Probably just the limits of CAW.

D Mac 03-31-2006 06:33 AM

Hopefully they will have entrances for Hell in a Cell and Cage matches.

I hate it when you set up a big PPV and have one of those matches with no entrances. It's all about the entrances in big matches.

Cool King 03-31-2006 08:49 AM

It's gonna be on the 360!?:wtf:

Well I guess it's about time Microsoft got a good game for once.:p

Xero 03-31-2006 08:58 AM

I remember when Just Bring It was being hyped. Everything was so awesome back then. You could go into the CROWD!.............. After which, you find out the "crowd" is a little box by the ring.

DS 03-31-2006 09:04 AM

I was excited for the crowd fighting to be back but after I look at the screenshots it looks like only parts of the crowd are able to be fought in. Unless you are only able to fight in the aisles, which I believe is the way it should be done. I also hope the weapons you can take from others aren't just placed on the barricade in front of people like that crutch.

It does look amazing though and it will be one of my first PS3 titles. I am all for the PS2 but if you can actually walk amongst the crowd, I don't know how good that would look on the PS2.

Disturbed316 03-31-2006 09:07 AM

I'm guessing grabing weapons from the crowd might work like the N64 games where you go over and press a button to get them.

DS 03-31-2006 03:08 PM

http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/775/7...g_3496081.html

If you look in the background, that's where they are fighting. I don't think you can actually go into the crowd. I think you just have to go to areas around the crowd.

Unless the crowd move around so you can move...

DS 03-31-2006 03:17 PM

They have chairs behind them, unless the chairs disappear as well, I doubt it. I'm just speculating though.

Disturbed316 03-31-2006 04:25 PM

I'm guessing it will be like JBI, where they part like the red sea, but in HIGHER DEFINITION!

DS 03-31-2006 04:27 PM

There are special areas in the arena that you can fight at (you can see one in that picture) where the environment works much like Smackdown vs Raw 2006 where you would either whip them into an object or grapple, punch, pull them towards an object. People in the crowd will hold things out for you to grab (bottles, crutches, umbrellas, etc) and you will use the pick up weapon button towards them. It's also possible to throw your opponent into the crowd and have them crawl back over the barricade but no actual fighting in the crowd has been seen. Once you are in a "high impact combination move" the camera will zoom out giving you a wider view of the arena for a second, a nice little effect.

Disturbed316 03-31-2006 04:30 PM

OH SHIT, EVERYONE GO TO GAMESPOT.COM AND LET THE VIDEO LOAD UP AT THE MAIN MENU!

From IGN.com

WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2007: Eyes On
First look at the game that puts the mania in wrestling.
by Jon Robinson
March 31, 2006 - Kurt Angle clotheslines John Cena over the guard railing and both wrestlers flip into the crowd. The Olympic champ is drenched in sweat, and when he stands up, someone from the crowd hands him a bottle. With the crack of glass, Cena is left sprawled on the concrete. That's when it happens. Kurt Angle rolls the WWE champ on a table and begins to climb the scaffolding near by. The camera pans back with a cinematic flair usually reserved for Monday nights on USA, then Angles takes the death defying leap, attempting a moonsault through the table.

If this was real life, you know Angle misses the moonsault (doesn't he almost always?). But this isn't real life. This is the first footage of WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2007 for the Xbox 360, and at first glance, it's the closest you can get to the men in tights without buying a front row ticket.

From the ab definition to the buildup of sweat throughout the match, the 20,000 polygon wrestlers show amazing details. Tattoos, shoes, even facial expressions from fear and shock to the look of pain after getting beat over the head with fluorescent lightbulbs…it's all in the game, presented, at least in the demonstration, sans HUD (think Fight Night 360).

But the improvements to the series aren't merely cosmetic. Using a new analog grappling system (featuring both quick and strong grapples), users will be able to control when and where to pickup opponents, then what to do with them once they're hoisted into the air. For example: If Cena decides to pick Angle up in a vertical suplex, simply flick up on the right analog stick. From here, Angle is in a bad way, completely upside down and completely at Cena's mercy. Hold up on the right analog stick and you can keep Angle in the air. While he's vertical, Cena can choose to taunt the crowd or his opponent, even walk to the ropes in order to setup a more vicious superplex. In fact, there are over 40 interactive moves like this where gamers will be in full control of when and how to slam their opponent. Think about rotating the stick for an airplane spin, and you get the idea of the fun that could be had.

Gamers will also be able to put in work outside the ring as there will be 20 hot spots of interactivity including everything from the ring post to the steel cage to the guard rails. This enables you to decide how many times you want to consecutively pound your opponent's head into the post, or what direction you wish to rake his face along the cage in order to bust them open.

When you throw opponents into the crowd, you'll see popcorn flying as fans try to pat their favorite superstars on the back or hand them a weapon like an umbrella, fire extinguisher, or crutches. There also backstage environments you'll be able to interact with, including speaker systems you can whip opponent's into as you watch the sparks fly from an electrifying electrocution.

All of this action is running at a smooth 60 frames per second, and we were able to see everything from the intros (the crowd here cheers Cena) to the crowd interaction. There are over 1,000 fully 3D people in the audience, and they pretty much act like a hot crowd from Raw, jumping up and down, holding up signs, and trying to get as close as possible to these superheroes of the mat.

During the presentation, representatives from THQ also promised things like updated rosters, legends, online play with voice chat, a Create Superstar mode with over 250 customizable parts, along with enhanced versions of season and GM modes. None of this, however, was actually shown on screen.

What we did see was some extremely impressive visuals and the kind of action wrestling fans have grown to love from the Smackdown series.

Forget Edge/Foley, if you're looking for someone who stole the show Wrestlemania weekend, look no further than THQ.

UmbrellaCorporation 03-31-2006 04:58 PM

HOLY SHIT.

I know that's just a preliminary movie, but oh. my. god.

If it looks half that good, it already gets an instant win for graphics.

The gameplay sounds interesting as hell too. Yep, this is definitely gonna be followed.

Lux 03-31-2006 05:15 PM

Yum!

BTW, how will the new anolg thing work in Create-A-Moveset? Judging by what I read it says press up to hoist an opponent up. then press another direction for whatever. So does that mean you'll only really have 8 grapples (4 weak and 4 strong) but you also have 4 variations of that move?

I just pray they actually stay down in this game.

What Would Kevin Do? 04-01-2006 01:19 AM

Also, if they bust out a combo system ala Giant Gram, but make it easier to use, this will be amazing. (IE, being able to combo some submissions and strikes right out of a snap mare, turning a powerbomb into a double powerbomb or a pinning powerbomb ,etc.)

You know what this game needs besides being able to upload music.

Clip saving. Ala saving pieces of the match for "instant replays" (This could be done easily, like hit select during the match to start, select again to stop.) Then they could add a simple video editor (change camera angle, speed up/slow down, maybe screen effects (black white, blur, etc.) Then we could have an entrace video creator/feud video creator.

The Fugitive 04-02-2006 12:48 AM

For the love of God, allow custom music this time. I'm sick of creating wrestlers without having their proper theme music.

Oh, to have a proper entrance for Jushin Liger with Ikari no Jushin playing in the background.

If games could do it on PS1 then surely a PS2/PS3/XBox360 can do it but with the ability to add it to your CAW entrance video.

PS1 couldn't do it to that caliber, nor could ps2 w/o a harddrive. They could store short clips on a memory card, but that's it. You'd need a decent harddrive, ala 360 of PS3 to make it decent. But hell, look at NCAA and Madden's replay system. Take that, add screen effects, and the ability to record,, and add music and you're set.

CM Punk needs to be in this game. Along with the Spirit Squad.

DS 04-04-2006 01:35 AM

They said there will be updated rosters (finally) so I bet they will be in it sometime.

What Would Kevin Do? 04-04-2006 01:39 AM

I really hope they add alot of moves. Reanimated (good, not shitty), and add some more Japanese moves. GO 2 SLEEP, sterness dust, wrist clutch backdrop hold, axe guillotine driver, Baisaku knee, KENTA combo, Dragon ray, etc.

Also, I will kill for them if they add the John Woo...

DS 04-04-2006 01:48 AM

The one problem I have with the THQ wrestling games, most of the time, is that they never seem to jump to a polished feature. They come out with some sort of interesting gametype, control, etc and they are usually lackluster the first time and by the second game they finally got it under control and it's fun. If they would skip the first part and put something in that doesn't seem like it needs improvement, they would be in great shape. I hope this doesn't include the crowd interaction seeing as how they have worked with most of it before.

Cuzziebro 04-04-2006 02:03 AM

Do you reckon they will add Eddie as a legend in the game? Or the better question is, do you want them to?

What Would Kevin Do? 04-04-2006 02:22 AM

I'm sure they will. As odd as it sounds, his model and moves are already programmed for the most part... WHy not keep him in?

Good point.

Hired Hitman 04-04-2006 10:47 AM

I would like to see a rope rope "Guilding" motion to the opponent.

I.e. a Leg drop will spin to land across their neck, instead of their legs... or have one that does and one that doesn't... or even a few that glide to different parts of the body. Five star would look great with a glide system in  .

a reverse motion to dive attacks would be cool, a quick roll out of the way would be nice, hard lands on the floor should be realistic... royal rumble lean on ropes, grapple to throw out idea was good... move reverse that look like a valid reversal to the move... that will do for now. :-\

I will be ecstatic if there are multiple costumes. It would make things so much easier (freeing up disc space so we don't have 9 different Hogans, etc.).

The Legends that i think will make it this year;

Stone Cold
Rock
Foley (Three Faces - Different Attires)
Hogan (Different Attires)
British Bulldog
Jake Roberts
Bret Hart
Owen Hart
LOD
Eddie Guerrero
Jimmy 'Superfly' Snuka
'Cowboy' Bob Orton, Jr.
And why not have Fabulous Moolah

I'll get it for PS2.

The fact that it's coming out for XBOX360 is more incentive to buy that system over a PS3... SmackDown was the only reason I bought a PS2...

I hope for the ps2 they remodel Triple H because he's looked the same for the past 3 games and the model looks nothing like HHH.

Hate to be a wet blanket, but...

...They don't do character models piecemeal anymore, haven't for a long time. Every character model for a non CAW is done individually, so the 9 Hogans take as much space as 9 costumes on a Hogan, and 4 Foleys would be the same whether each had a slot on the screen or was an alt.

BAsically, it takes up the same space on either method.

Dang.

TerranRich 04-05-2006 03:29 PM

I think the last game to have a CAW-based roster was No Mercy for N64. :p

AKI's Jap my good man. If anything SvR is becoming more American developed as the years go by.

I said it before I'll say it again;

DX HBK and HHH as legends. I'm getting mad now.

He means "released in America."
