Just want people who have played FF7 to answer a question.

Do you think the game would've gotten as big as it did if Aries DIDNT die?

Drakul 04-24-2006 12:17 AM

Alot of people see it as a "legendery moment" in games and I read/heard that alot of people actually cried at her death scene.

Kalyx triaD 04-24-2006 12:24 AM

I don't think her death was instrumental to the game's success. It was a moment to be remembered, but it's not like sales spiked when people heard a game character died.

McDoogle 04-24-2006 12:35 AM

People actually cried? Are you kidding me?

Bad Company 04-24-2006 12:40 AM

SPOILER, FUCK!

According to a few things I've read and stuff people have. I doubt it was full blown crying though. I bet it would be more "misty eyed" than crying.

Blitz 04-24-2006 12:53 AM

Yes.

I know I was pretty pissed when she died...And till this day, i've never seen her final limit break :'(

Extreme Angle 04-24-2006 12:09 PM

i think its the most dramatic video game death of all time...
i hated her so i wasn't to bothered...
but no if i don't think it would of been as big

diothoir 04-24-2006 12:28 PM

People would have bought it regardless. It wasn't as if it was "OMG she dies, buy this game".

Yeah, most of its success came from critical acclaim, the FF name, the groundbreaking visuals (The FMV, anyway), etc. They could shit in a box, put the FF label on it, and it'd sell like 30 million in a month.

Oh wait, they did. FFX.

Xero 04-24-2006 02:16 PM

I don't think it would have affected it.

Also, I've heard that they are indeed remaking FF7 with the FF12 battle system for PS3.

Aries = God of War

Aeris = Dead chick from FF7

:D

LoDownM 04-24-2006 07:21 PM

If you think about, if she didn't die, it really wouldn't of effected how big the game got or not, cuz, seriously, how many people knew she was going to die when they bought the game, and where still sucked in by the story/graphics over the last game/controls/etc.. I mean, if she didn't, we'd think of the story line differntly, we'd think differntly about Sephiroth(wouldn't hate/love him, whatever) wouldn't effect the game, more like, "would people view the game's story as a "masterpiece" or not"

Right, I've had just about enough FFX abuse

Favre4Ever 04-25-2006 12:45 AM

The first time I played the game, I had no idea what would happen, and Aeris was one of my main chars. Got her final limit and everything. Sucked.

Sorry, it's the redheaded stepchild of modern FF.

The only game so bad I stopped playing the series.

Blitz 04-25-2006 01:42 AM

FFX>FFVIII>FFIX

Boomer 04-25-2006 02:58 AM

FF8 is horrible.

I still have 2,3,4,5 and 6 to beat. Meh. 11 doesn't count either.

I should really finish 6 one of these days :o

Blitz 04-25-2006 04:00 AM

Yes, I also have to finish 6.

Silent 04-25-2006 05:10 AM

No I don't think it would have effected the sales at all.. since it wasn't a selling point.

Shaggy 04-25-2006 08:23 PM

I was very sad when it happened....tears didnt fall or anything but I still couldnt believe what happened....

The only thing I hated about the game was the "Knights of the Round Table" Summon....damn thing took like 10 minutes...

Many of the summons took forever. Some were definitely worse.

LoDownM 04-26-2006 12:44 AM

Knights of the Round is short compared to Eden in 8...Talk about a pain, least you didn't need to rush through his boost shit.

road doggy dogg 04-26-2006 05:06 AM

WTF @ all you turds who haven't played/beaten 6. Easily the best FF game ever made. Assholes. Fuck you.

:(

Everytime I try to play it, emulated or the playstation remake...Something always happens, harddrive blows up, system breaks :(

road doggy dogg 04-26-2006 05:36 AM

Get the ROM then, it's worth it

LoDownM 04-26-2006 05:37 AM

I know!! I was like half way done with it when I was playing the remake and my psx died

road doggy dogg 04-26-2006 05:38 AM

Tough break :'( I need to pick that up for PSX too now that you mention it, ty.

Blitz 04-26-2006 01:44 PM

Yeah, got 6 on an emulator. I'm like 3/4 the way through it, just never bothered to finish.

Fignuts 04-26-2006 09:50 PM

Um...you seem to be forgetting a very important aspect of this arguement. No one knew she was going to die. There were no captions on the back, saying, "SEE AERIS DIE!" You knd of only knew if you bought it.

Nero 04-27-2006 02:22 AM

I was much more saddened by the death of Cait Sith...him talking to the camera made me kinda sad. However it was ruined when another Cait Sith just came seconds later.

Its good but the loading times on that thing are terrible. Just keep playing it on your emulator.

That's my advice.

Drakul 04-27-2006 04:03 AM

If anyone hasn't seen it, hear it is with Evanescense.

For the life of me though, I can never understand how people can play through the mass of shit that is FF 9.

My order prolly goes (new generation games anyway): FF7 > FF8 > FFX/X-2 (A lot hated X and X-2. I loved them. Thought they were really unique.), and then finally >>>>>>>>>>>> 9. I can not even begin to tell anyone how bad I felt paying 50 dollars for it, then finding out that it was the pile of wank it was.

Blitz 04-27-2006 02:56 PM

Yes, IX was a fair bit of awful.

The One 04-27-2006 07:21 PM

I say no it would not have been as great. While FF7 was legendary at the time for it's style and graphics, it also had what I consider to be the second greatest FF storyline (after Tactics of course...I know you all probably hate it but I love it so SHUT THE FUCK UP). And a huge part of that storyline was her death. I personally know people who cried, so I can personally back up that people di cry when it happened. It was huge, now it would have been a success even without her death, because let's face it, it's the greatest PRG of all time in the eyes of Video Game Marks (I ain't no VG Smart). However I think part of what wrapped you up so emotionally in the story was her death. I think it was needed, at least to give it the legendary status it has.

RBM 04-27-2006 09:15 PM

Noone with half a brain that actually played Tactics could possibly hate it. It's the best thing ever made with the name Final Fantasy attached to it. Followed by 6. Then 7.

People were already hooked by the time that happened though. The game was compelling up until that point, or the death would have meant fuck all. It was the end of a disc, it was a turning point, but one that hinged on the frame the rest of the story created.

Not to mention it seemed pretty ad hoc to me, but whatever.

The story would have likely continued as compelling, as Aeris' death offers little to the latter elements of the story beyond writing her out.

And VG marks love FFVII Because OMFG HES GOT A BIG KATANA HES SO COOL I <3 SEPIROTH

Blitz 04-27-2006 11:06 PM

I love Tactics more than I love my family.

Outsider 04-28-2006 01:00 AM

You're forgetting the most important thing about her death, which is (to use wrestling terms) it put Sepiroth over as the best heel in gaming history.

Seriously, who did not want to kick his ass after that scene, the thing that made that game so good is the way they built up to the final battle so well, and this was one of the best ways in which they achieved this. The death wasn't fundamental to the success of the game, but the character of Sepiroth was, and his main impact was in that one scene.

Kane Knight 04-29-2006 12:53 PM

The only reason I wanted to kick seppy's ass is he was such a lame, cardboard fucking cliché. I get more depth out of the semen stains in my drawers.

I could not disagree more. I think he is the greatest Video Game villian of all time. He does have the traditional cliche aspects (the all black, the ubber-powerful, etc.) but he is very interesting. I love storylines that involve a form of man made god.

Kane Knight 04-29-2006 03:21 PM

There are no words to describe how sad you made me, describing Vanilla Ice as interesting, let alone the greatest video game villain of all time.
