Anybody Thrilla 08-02-2006 03:37 AM

CM Punk

All right, so I watched his debut tonight. He wasn't bad, but he didn't exactly look like the savior of wrestling. What is there that I should be looking forward to from him?

Joey Slugs 08-02-2006 03:40 AM

Everything. Just wait until he gets into a fued and starts cutting major promos... it will be worth it.

Anybody Thrilla 08-02-2006 03:41 AM

It had better, Joey Slugs, or I'm going to hold you personally responsible.

Destor 08-02-2006 03:42 AM

The guy is the total pagage. One match isn't going to show you what he is about. Wait for a fued, his money is in his psycology. When he has a feud to play with you should see.

RGWhat316 08-02-2006 03:49 AM

I got a friend who is a HUGE CM Punk mark, and he's always saying how great he is, and god's gift to wrestling. Usually this friend likes a bunch of crappy people, so I'm a little skeptical. This first match wasn't too bad, but not that impressive. So, I'll just have to wait and see what he can really due to judge.

Dave Youell 08-02-2006 03:54 AM

I haven't even seen his match from last night and I don't care, he's the real messiah of ECW

FourFifty 08-02-2006 04:36 AM

He is CM Punk, 'nuff said.

What Would Kevin Do? 08-02-2006 05:11 AM

Also, he blatantly ripped off Kenta's Busaiku knee setup combo. (And probably Tenzan's Anaconda Vice and setup, but I'm not positive if someone did it before Tenzan.)

LEsson of the day... CM Punk likes his puroresu.

FourFifty 08-02-2006 05:39 AM

If I haven't seen it, it's new to me!
(didn't ABC use that catch phrase?)

Destor 08-02-2006 06:14 AM

NBC

FourFifty 08-02-2006 06:17 AM

Whatever it was, it's new to me!

Afterlife 08-02-2006 07:22 AM

I was in great anticipation of my frist witness to the Pepsi Plunge. Alas, I got some crappy submission that was pretty nice, but I'm calling it 'crappy' 'cause it ain't what I wanted.

By the way, I'm not one to knock Punk, I think he did great...but he looks like a homeless Stevie Richards. I'm just gonna put that out there...do with it what you will.

The Mackem 08-02-2006 08:44 AM

He was a big fish in a small pond. Probably had the best mic skills on the indie circuit. Like a lot of them when they get on a bigger stage they can't live up to the expectation that other people put on them and to people who haven't seen them wrestle before they are all 'What's the big fuss".

He had an intense feud with Raven even in some of the shittier indie feds like MLW. The one in TNA wasn't so good and I was a little disappointed with that, maybe because he was in a tag team with Julio Dinero (no disrespect intended).

I like CM Punk because he had probably the best in-ring psycology and the best mic skills on the indie circuit. He also made a colour commentator on ROH.

Look forward, AT, to his story tellling in matches and especially in any decent feuds that are given to him. Plus he is a decent wrestler at the end of the day so at least he knows a few decent moves.

Yeah, anaconda vice is prettty popular now, but he can't think of his own combo?

KingofOldSchool 08-02-2006 10:07 AM

Considering who is working for the WWE right now, he's better than say about 90% of them.

Pepsi Man 08-02-2006 10:08 AM

lmao @ supporters already having to make excuses for him when all I've read is that his debut is supposed to be the greatest thing in the history of wrestling. [SLIGHT hyperbole, but you get my point.]

Kane Knight 08-02-2006 10:14 AM

ROFL. All the excuses.

KingofOldSchool 08-02-2006 10:25 AM

Well I never said he was the greatest thing ever, I was excitied to see a really talented guy busting his ass in the indys for years, finally making it. I've never hyped that Punk was going to change wrestling or anything, but he is defiantely a change of pace to the crap we've been getting.

Have you been?

To be honest, all the Punkgasms are kind of blending together, so I've more or less tuned most of them out.

Destor 08-02-2006 12:30 PM

Excuses? He had an excellent debut. No need for excuses.

Wow thats funny KK, cause I was tuning out all your Punk bashing.

Trying to tone down the markdom I got for the guy, considering him and Joe saved my interest in wrestling. AT, wait until he gets into a feud and cuts some promos, since thats what made him in his feud against Raven.

Jaton, he ain't Jesus, but he's still better than you

Jaton 08-02-2006 12:50 PM

I kid, I kid. I liked his debut.

Savio 08-02-2006 12:54 PM

He seems decent enough

Anybody Thrilla 08-02-2006 01:12 PM

I don't have a problem with the guy. I'd actually love to see a straight edge heel character. It's just that I was reading some other threads, and people are all "OMFG! CM PUNK VERSUS TRIPLE H AT WM23!"....or at least placing him in positions like that. It just doesn't seem very viable at this point. Best of luck to him, I guess, but so far I've only seen one pretty decent match. Those promos he cut in his lead-in did nothing for me.

Anybody Thrilla 08-02-2006 01:12 PM

Actually, he had a good match with Val Venis on Heat like a year ago. That was better than last night's match, but then again, Val Venis is better than Justin Credible.

That's okay, because you're a retard.

What's funny is my "punk bashing" stems from tards like you who started bitching at me when I merely said that CM punk was nowhere near what he was hyped to be (Which isn't saying much, since nobody's that good, and I've explained it in the past). Oh, and I think Straightedge is retarded, something I've maintained since before you little girls knew who CM punk was or what a Straightedge was.

But it was fuckwits like you who pulled the whole "YOU QUESTIONED AN ELEMENT OF PUNK YOU PUNK HATER!!!!!!!1111oneoneoneoneone" So, I decided to have fun with y'all.

And I still maintain: He can't live up to his hype, because you stupid fucks have built him up too high for anyone to possibly live up to. It actually diminishes his accomplishments in the process.

Kane Knight 08-02-2006 01:51 PM

Wow. I just realised how much internet smarks are all just a little like Takerlover.

I'm not straight edge, never was and won't ever be. Yeah I agree that Punk got a lot of hype....from me....but thats like having a local band you've followed since they played at your local bar get signed, and now they are touring arenas and get airtime on the radio. I've followed him for a long time, and he's made it bigtime.

Now I can't speak for the other little girls, but I knew about straight edge for a long time before I discovered Punker....right around the time I started drinking.

No one can live up to the hype, thats the beauty of wrestling message boards. If the internet was bigger back in 95, you'd be saying how Eddie or Malenko didn't live up to the hype, its just how it goes now.

The Naitch 08-02-2006 03:11 PM

has CM Punk ever taken painkillers? Or do they not count as drugs

Innovator 08-02-2006 03:47 PM

I remember he didn't take pain medication when he got his skull fractured, so if he didn't then, probably still doesn't.

Never claimed you were. Just that the CM fanclub used it as a reason to assume that I was prejudiced against punk beyond all reason. I mean, OMG, he thinks Straightedge is stupid, that's a shot at our lord and savior!

It's pretty much the same thing I saw with Burchill. The argument went this way:

Fanboy: OMG look at the video! Watch this man fly!

Me: Do you really think WWE's going to let him keep doing those sick aerial moves?

Fanboy: Shut up! Stop hating on Burchill!

The truth is, I was largely impressed by Burchill. He's got some amazing moves and an extraordinary amount of talent. What people judged the statement on is my criticism of stating, in this case, that him flying meant something positive for WWE.

In fact, every time I say something about Punk, you seem to take it personally. Your response, for example, to the straightedge statement. Why tell me you are not straightedge? Did I call you straightedge, or did I say something like, "omething I've maintained since before you little girls knew who CM punk was or what a Straightedge was?"

I think it was the latter, and that's not calling you Straightedge. It's just saying I dun been aginit since before you fucks knew what it was.

In terms of hyping a local band that makes it big, there's a difference between what most people do, and what you and yours have done. Very rarely will you see this level of fanaticism from someone who's "just happy" to see a small act signed. And when you do, it's because it's an obsession, not because you're happy to see them make it big.

When I do the whole big letter deal, its all in good fun, half the time making fun of the Sabin stuff Skippy does. Again I'm speaking for myself and not everyone else who's a Punk fan, he may not be the savior of professional wrestling....just for ECW.

Speaking of his actual in ring stuff last night, he used a lot more strikes than I've seen him do...and he actually used the real anaconda vice, not the headlock he had used in OVW.

 That was hilarious. For the past year & a half, I've been hearing nothing but how incredible Punk is. His first match on TV, he spends 3/4 of it selling for Justin Credible. JUSTIN CREDIBLE. I'm not detracting from Punk or anything, but I can just imagine Vince backstage when they're booking the match:

Vince: So what do we have up next?

John Laurinitis: We've gotta great new kid here, got a really unique gimmick. Says his name is.... C.M. Punk.

Vince: Ooooh, sounds promising! Where did he come from, Raw or Smackdown?

John: Actually... neither. He came from the indies. Worked some ROH too.

Vince:  You're tellin me he didn't come from Raw?

John: Nope...

Vince: and he didn't come from Smackdown? I didn't make him?

John: No, listen, I think we can..

Vince: No way he's going over strong.

John: What?

Vince: I SAID. NO FUCKING WAY I'M GONNA MAKE HIM LOOK GOOD.

Arnold HamNegger 08-02-2006 06:08 PM

Well, I've never seen Punk wrestle before and have to say I really liked what I saw. There's alot of potential there for some good feuds, particularly with RVD. I think his image fits in perfectly with ECW and he's very athletic. Definetly adds strength to the roster as he has shown he can be entertaining IMO even without the "hardcore" rules of ECW. I also like how his first match wasn't a squash. I hate when WWE feels that in order to get "new" talent over, they have to ram them down everyones throat and prove how dominant they are. The roster isn't that deep to have multiple jobbers, so there's really only room for like one squash per episode and that angle (no pun intended) works perfectly for Angle right now.

I thought it was a damn fine debut. I like the style he's working (Man, if he hit the Busaiku after the Kenta Combo... ). As for the promos leading to the debut, they were obviously scripted, and likely will be for the forseeable future.

Look at the quality of new talent thats come in since Ace took over for JR as VP of talent relations. JR brought in the actual athletes like Benjamin and Haas....Ace brought in Snitsky and Heidenreich

CM Punk should do well, mainly because he isnt a spot monkey. Spot monkeys tend to get toned down to kicks and chops when they enter the 'E'.

Cactus Sid 08-02-2006 08:17 PM

Just saw his debut, thought it was a decent enough match for what it was.

The fact is, everyone is expecting him to come in and put on a 60 minute match to the standard of the Joe matches (which I'm willing to wager half the people who hype him haven't actually seen) be involved in some major fued, with some memorable promos and become the next superstar.

Facts are facts, the guy has talent in the ring, he has a unique gimmick and he can work the mic, but this ain't Ring of Honor he's working for now. He's going to be on TV for a maximum of 10 minutes (more likely 5 or 6) each week and won't do anything like what people want or expect until either a) ECW get another hour of TV or b) They start doing ECW PPVs.

I'd say people should get off his nuts until he can prove that he can bring the skills he certainly has to the big stage, and do the very best with what he's got and I'd also say that everyone who is being a detractor should actually give the guy a chance. He's had 3 (maybe 4 I can't remember) half decent introductory promos and a 6 minute match on TV, which was a pretty decent match for the time it had.

The real test is how he performs in front of the bigger arena with people who don't give a fuck about him, if he can connect with the crowd, he can get over in the long term, which will potentially put him in the position to do what everyone who loves him says he's gonna do.

KingofOldSchool 08-02-2006 08:34 PM

Even if he does get over with the WWE fan base, it doesn't mean he'll get pushed for more than a couple of months. But I'm sure you've noticed that trend by now.

But hey at least he'd be getting paid.

Booking 101:

You put heels over in squash matches, make people know they are undeniably talented, that way when they have cheat to win against X baby face they look all the better.

You put babies over through competitive matches. Showing the audience that he is a white meat baby face. That he gets his shit done through wrestling hard fought battles.

Oh yeah, submission victory is always going over huge in kayfabe.

Strange that isn't it? Vince would rather push a man who's been openly arrested for drug use, is notorious for no-shows and hasn't wrestled a decent match in years than old school professionals like Justin Credible.

Chavo Classic 08-03-2006 02:48 PM

Not that I'm saying Justin Credible should be main eventing... certainly not! But why would bookers want to headline someone as difficult to manage as Sabu?
