The nintendo WII

Tell me everything you know about this console. I feel like I want to buy one but just to make 100% sure.

Destor 09-15-2006 10:21 AM

Well, the one thing I do know is it's spelled Wii. :shifty:

D Mac 09-15-2006 01:38 PM

2) It will job to 360.

D Mac 09-15-2006 01:40 PM

3) It has the gayest looking controller in history.

Destor 09-15-2006 01:59 PM

I'd rather be a ninja than an over-weight nerd. :p

*edit*

Thats was a generalization of the average gamer and in no way related to Diesels size, shape, or social status.

Blitz 09-15-2006 04:17 PM

Launch titles?

D Mac 09-15-2006 04:21 PM

Prolly Mario Sunshine X or some shit.

D Mac 09-15-2006 04:22 PM

Some little kiddy game i bet.

Bad Company 09-15-2006 09:23 PM

I will be buying a Nintendo for the first time on launch. Mainly because I already own a 360 :D

Drakul 09-16-2006 09:33 AM

Well the controls are montion sensitive so you move the controler to do stuff but some games let you use a regular controller/ Gamecube controller.

You can play Gamecubes games on it and download games from the NES, SNES, Megadrive, N64 and some other console I can't remember the name of with the "Virtual Console" download thing.

Games on release are Zelda: Twilight Pincess, Super Mario Galaxy and thats all I know as far as games go. Theres obviously more.

Can't remember the cost but it's alot less than a Ps3.

Destor 09-16-2006 09:39 AM

$250

The other console would be the Turbografx-16, and Super Mario Galaxy is not a launch title.

The system has a massive launch line-up, with Nintendo releasing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, a port of the DS game 'Trauma Center', Excite Truck and Wii Sports (Baseball, Bowling, Boxing, Tennis, Golf) and third parties releasing Rayman Raving Rabbids, an FPS called Red Steel, Madden 07, Need For Speed Carbon, Call of Duty 3 and Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, amongst others.

The price is $250 in North America, and £179 in the UK. Wii Sports is included as part of the package.

As for non-gaming features, it will no longer be able to play DVDs, sadly but it will feature an avatar creator called "Mii" which will be used with Wii Sports. News and Weather "channels", a highly interactive photo viewer and an Opera Web Browser (purchasable from Wii Store with points) that supports Flash and Java.

WiiConnect24 will download demos and trailers to the system when its in standby.

Since they are going to have web browsing can you download like GTA3 and play it on the wii maybe?

Funky Fly 09-16-2006 04:34 PM

It still can't play DVDs? WTF? Don't tell me they're still doing that reverse spin crap.

Dorkchop 09-16-2006 11:21 PM

Like the Gamecube and the GBA, the DS and Wii will connect for games and other stuff.

Skippord 09-17-2006 12:07 AM

I want one but I still think Wii is the gayest name ever

Requiem 09-17-2006 12:27 AM

I'm starting to wonder how this console is next generation at all. What with it's lack of DVD playing abilities, which even the last generation had.. to top it off, it has a lack of real graphical improvement.

Granted, it may end up being a solid console. But next generation? Hardly.

The Destroyer 09-17-2006 12:38 AM

Well it has better graphics than the Gamecube, so by that virtue it's next gen. Plus it has plenty of features that are a step up from the GC. And just because Nintendo have decided to focus on something other than raw power and graphical ability, doesn't mean it isn't a next generation console. And honestly, who cares if it doesn't play DVDs? You can get DVD players for next to nothing.

Savio 09-17-2006 12:51 AM

so if the PS3 and the 360 couldn't play DVDs they would not be considered next gen either?

Dorkchop 09-17-2006 01:09 AM

OH NO, IT DOESN'T PLAY DVDS!!!

It's not next gen in terms of graphics (Though Nintendo will pop out a few games with amazing graphics). It's next gen in terms of gameplay.

Most of my favorite recent-ish games don't have great graphics, but great gameplay. It won't bother me much if most to all of Wii's games aren't anywhere near as nice looking as the PS3 or Xbob 360's games. If I want great graphics I will buy either a PS3 or Xbox 360... Which I plan on doing eventually. I'm just waiting for better games.

Requiem 09-17-2006 01:10 AM

I'm just saying.. they're skipping important things that were around in the last generation. It's basically a slightly upgraded gamecube with focus on peripherals and 'features' (such as a game library of the old nintendo games) instead of a system that is really improved such as the 360 and PS3. (Granted, I don't like the 360, but they at least came out with a -far- better system than their previous one. And no I'm not dissing the old x-box.)

Jaton 09-17-2006 01:15 AM

Yeah, because implementing an entire new style of playing games is really just focusing on peripherals and not advancing the entire gaming genre as a whole.

darkpower 09-17-2006 01:21 AM

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption :drool:

The discs will be bigger, no more of the minidisc shit that plagued the Cube by scaring off third party developers. Also there will be a standard-type controller, which I think will be sold seperatly, for those wanting a more "traditional" style controller.

Here's some other stuff from USAToday.com:

The final pieces of this fall's video game battle fall into position today as Nintendo announces that its new Wii home system will sell for $250 — half the price of Sony's cheapest PlayStation 3 — and launch Nov. 19, two days after the PS3.

The two next-generation systems face Microsoft's Xbox 360, which will have had a year's head start; the anticipated 360 game Gears of War, out Nov. 7, is expected to boost sales.

But Nintendo is deploying a different approach than the others. The cutting-edge 360 ($300-$400) and PS3 ($500-$600) support HD video — and the PS3 uses the just-out Blu-ray HD disc format — while Wii (pronounced "we") depends on more conventional technology.

But Wii's unique wireless motion-sensitive controller has captured the attention of game designers and players. "We think all the other initiatives in the home console space have been much too hardcore-gamer-focused. We want consumers to be able to pick up (the Wii controller) and play," says Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.

Nintendo plans to have 4 million systems shipped worldwide by year's end, he says. Sony recently reduced from 4 million to 2 million the number of PS3s likely to reach the USA and Japan this year. Analysts expect U.S. retailers to have about 400,000 PS3s and about 1 million Wii systems at launch.

Included with Wii is the Wii Sports game (with tennis, golf, basketball and bowling), the controller and a "nunchuck" attachment. Other details:

• Wii owners can download and play games from Nintendo's older NES, Super NES and Nintendo 64 systems and NEC's TurboGrafx. Initially, about 30 games (usually $5 to $10) will be available, including The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario 64. Games are saved on SD memory cards, which can also be used to import digital pictures.
• Built-in high-speed Net connectivity (including WiFi) lets Wii gather news and weather updates, plus messages from other Wii owners.
In the game-system battle, Wii "is a wild card," says DFC Intelligence analyst David Cole. "Is it going to be so unique that people are going to really rush and buy it — or be leery?"

I haven't got one to confirm this, but apparently the whole GameCube reverse spin thing is a load of bullshit anyway, cos apparently if you open the disc tray while the momentum of the disc spinning is still happening, it spins the right way around.

DS 09-17-2006 12:33 PM

If the Gamecube came out with with a motion sensing controller, would it really be that much different?

Yeah, you can re-buy all your old games for more than you can buy them now. Yeah, you get an internet browser (I didn't hear a lot of people asking for this feature but I guess it's only an unnecessary if Sony or Microsoft puts it in their console) but in order to use it you have to have an internet connection and that means, more than likely, there is a computer someone near.

Other than that it seems like I'm paying another $250 for a new controller.

Jaton 09-17-2006 12:59 PM

Yeah. Me and RDD are going to stomp some fucking heads.

Craftsman 09-17-2006 02:46 PM

I will not buy it unless it can make me Ice Cream and play DVD's.

If you notice, Nintendo aren't really using the Nintendo name much with Wii, sure it's there, but its not in your face. They want everyone to play games and attract new gamers whilst trying not to say 'HEY THIS IS A GAME MACHINE!' So that people don't get scared off.

The inclusion of the Internet browser is for the purpose of making people sit around the TV as a family and using the Internet, it's also a lot faster to connect to the internet and will probably be mad easy like it was getting your DS online with the WiFi.

I don't see how that not including the DVD compatability makes this any less of a next generation system, when EVERYONE has a DVD player of some kind and with it's inclusion, no doubt would have added to the over-all price of the system.
Nintendo have said something along the lines of Wii isn't next generation, this is the new generation. They are trying to better the industry and that's with the controller. Controllers have always been updated and ultimately bettered with every 'Next Generation' but the attention was always on the graphics, this time the Graphics have been bettered but the attention is on the controller.

King Jericho 09-17-2006 06:01 PM

I'm looking at the graphical view points this way, graphics really don't matter.

Everyone has a PC and a lot of people will play games on there PC, the life of a PC and it's hardware/software are alot shorter compared to consoles. So though the 360's and PS3's graphical ability are superior to Wii's, PC's will always be that step ahead but do the same amount of people who play consoles play PC games? No, more people play consoles. Just because high end PC's will better that of console's graphics doesn't mean people play PC games because of it.

It's all about enjoyment, experience and interactment not just about graphics and a DVD player.

Blitz 09-17-2006 06:21 PM

Launch lineup:

* Avatar: The Last Airbender
* Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII
* Blitz: The League
* Call of Duty 3
* Cars
* Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2
* Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors
* Elebits
* Excite Truck
* Far Cry
* GT Pro Series
* Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers
* The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
* Madden NFL 07
* Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
* Metal Slug Anthology
* Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
* Monster 4x4 World Circuit
* Need for Speed: Carbon
* Open Season
* Rayman Raving Rabbids
* Red Steel
* SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab
* Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz
* Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam
* Trauma Center: Second Opinion
* Wii Sports

Unimpressive. The only game I want is Ultimate Alliance, and I can get that on my PS2.

The Destroyer 09-17-2006 08:02 PM

Last I heard Metroid had been delayed so will no longer be a launch game.

And it's not that unimpressive. As long as people can get Zelda and a few other titles to keep them busy, they should be fairly happy.

Funky Fly 09-17-2006 08:20 PM

* Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors
* The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
* Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
* Metal Slug Anthology
* Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
* Wii Sports

That's about all I really care about, as far as line up. I know that there are some good games coming up down the line (Smash Bros Brawl), but some of those launch titles are probably going to be crap (Care, Spongebob, etc).

And it's not like I don't have a DVD player, I'm just pointing out that it's a pretty basic feature and they're not taking advantage of it. When my dad's dvd player was acting up, what did we do? Plug my PS2 into the tv and watch movies with it. If the gamecube had a DVD feature (like that Japan-only version of the cube), I wouldn't have needed to buy a DVD player (didn't have one at the time). All I'm saying is you never know when it'll come in handy. And it's not like it would drive up the price the way Blu Ray is doing to the PS3.

King Jericho 09-17-2006 08:27 PM

Yeh Metroid's been delayed, which isn't really a bad thing! Retro stated around E3 time I think that Corruption wouldn't be mulitplayer and wouldn't go online, but that was when it was a planned launch title, this gives me the impression (as a Nintendo exec was talking about getting online playing Wii and used Metroid as an example, but that same article had a note from the editor saying that a PR guy had said: 'Though metroid hasn't been confirmed as online') that Corruption might now have a multiplayer/online mode, which would be awesome.

Also, with it being delayed, means I can spend my time, firstly, gazing in awe at the sexyness of the Hardware, touching the controller, setting up Mii, looking around THEN playing Wii sports for a while, THEN playing Zelda and letting it totally take over every spare minute THEN playing Red Steel and Excite Truck, and going back to Zelda cos it will take ages to complete and playing Wii sports a hundred more times, Metroid being delayed isn't a bad thing, as it's going to be hard enough to split my time.
Then when it comes along, I can devote a lot of time to that, which it's bound to take.

Petethegeekstreet 09-17-2006 08:44 PM

* Call of Duty 3
* Excite Truck
* Far Cry
* The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
* Madden NFL 07
* Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
* Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
* Rayman Raving Rabbids
* Red Steel
* Wii Sports

I'm looking forward to all of these. I thought Mario was going to be out for launch?

Mike the Metal Ed 09-17-2006 08:53 PM

* Call of Duty 3
* The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
* Metal Slug Anthology
* Red Steel
* Trauma Center: Second Opinion
* Wii Sports

and I guess Metroid when it eventually comes out, but I've never really played a Metroid game.

Wow.

I have no idea where to start with that. Please name me one thing that you would do with your family on the internet. This isn't like the radio back in the 1930s. And how, in any way, other than already being at the TV, would it be faster to use your Wii.

That lineup is incredibly unimpressive and the only game I would want to play would be Zelda. After E3 I was kind of excited but now I think that was only because of the occasion.

Mike the Metal Ed 09-17-2006 09:17 PM

Nintendo suggested the example of booking a holiday on the internet, I'll hardly ever use it, but a feature is a feature to me.

Requiem 09-17-2006 10:57 PM

That's like saying "Microsoft said I can play solitare on this computer. I really don't like solitare, and will hardly ever play it, but that's pretty sweet."

Seriously, that's how insignificant that is. Booking a vacation on your Wii? That's going to happen what, once.. maybe twice in the entire time you own the thing. Odds are, it won't even happen at all. You peope are just digging for anything now, and these reasons are getting ridiculous.

Nintendo's suggestion. Not mine. The browser will cost points anyway, so its completely optional.

But it IS an option, the option is there if you want it, and maybe someone will have a good use for it, and I'd rather have it available at the click of a button should I need it for whatever reason than not at all, is that hard to comprehend?

Requiem 09-17-2006 11:59 PM

Can you use points to upgrade the system into a PS3?

If so, I'm sold.

Mike the Metal Ed 09-18-2006 12:08 AM

Nah, since the store probably won't have items they'd have to GIVE you points in order to make you want to buy it.

Kapoutman 09-18-2006 12:40 AM

The games I could be gettign at launch, although I'll end up buying only two or three because of money issues:

* Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors
* Excite Truck
* The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
* Rayman Raving Rabbids
* Red Steel
* Trauma Center: Second Opinion

Zelda is a given, and I didn't include Wii Sports because it's packed in. That's seven potential launch titles, which is pretty impressive in my opinion.

Mike the Metal Ed 09-18-2006 12:46 AM

Good thing you asked me, I've got a lot of experience in gaming.

The Wii is about 3 DVD cases in size. The newer announcements are the Wii Channels and Wii Browser. The Wii Channels are some 48 Channels for wii related stuff, like the 'Mii' channel for caricatures, a News Channel, and a Weather Channel where you can see weather forecasts all ove the world.

For games, at launch, the big games I see are Red Steel, Rayman Raving Rabbids, and Legend of Zelda Twiglight Princess. Unfortunatley, Metroid Prime slipped to 2007, and Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy are two other major 2007 players.

While you can still order games from the Virtual Console and use the Wii Browser( you will be able to code Wii games, last I heard), third party titles will not use Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for multiplayer, although the jury's still out on whether or not WiiConnect24 will be useable by third parties prior to 2007.

The Wii graphically is and always will be inferior to the other two consoles. Will first party Wii titles look better than a lot of 360 titles? sure, but don't try to compare Metroid Prime 3 and Halo 3 graphically. Both titles look great, but the 360 can just do more.

If you want to know anything else, ask, and I shall answer.

Funky Fly 09-18-2006 06:00 AM

BTW, EGM reported a while back that an early playable version of Red Steel looks sexy, but plays like jittery shit. Pretty disappointed right there. :(

I see myself getting a Wii somewhere down the line, but definitely not at t launch. :-\

That lineup is incredibly unimpressive and the only game I would want to play would be Zelda. After E3 I was kind of excited but now I think that was only because of the occasion.

I shall be using the internet to it's full extent on a TV. (e.g. set my homepage as youtube :P)

Luigi is not his "brother" in the literal sense...

Pleanty, the amount of times my Dad asks me to do things, find things, tells me to look at things for him on the internet is countless. Only yesterday infact did he ask me to do two things, which both times required me to boot up my PC, log in, wait a couple minutes, then 1: Find an address and a telephone number of a local Football ground and 2: Check out some videos on youtube of some group he liked when he was a kid and couldn't rememeber something. It will be faster to turn on my 'never off' Wii and connect to the internet then doing it through my PC.

My sister and here boyfriend, who both really don't get on with PC's looking for a hoilday on the Internet (point and click) probably easier for the computer illiterate.

JOKES

King Jericho 09-20-2006 11:26 AM

Also, it's like you're saying people aren't going to use the Wii Internet browser, when you're using the Internet now, what makes it different from sitting on my sofa and using a Wii controller instead of a mouse.

There will also be ideas that families might not have thought about doing with the Internet before now, sat in your front room or whatever. Looking at porn together, who knows, shopping, also gives you another option to use the internet if someone else is on the PC.

Mike the Metal Ed 09-20-2006 11:28 AM

The Wii is more portable than other systems too, so say you go away for a couple of weeks, you bring your Wii along to kill some time when you can't be bothered to be out exploring your surroundings. The hotel you're staying in has Wi-Fi access. Win.

Destor 09-20-2006 11:31 AM

I would rather watch porn my TV. :yes:

King Jericho 09-20-2006 11:31 AM

I'll be getting (along with another Wii-mote and Nunchuk and Classic Controller as well as possibly another Gamecube memory card just to be on the safe side and Wii sports cos it's bundled)

*Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
*Red Steel
*Excite Truck

Probably leave it at that and ask for some games for Christmas, being Call of Duty 3 namely.

Good times. :love:

And the Wii Browser has Flash, so if there's any porn equivalent of YouTube around, you have two birds with one stone. :cool:

Destor 09-20-2006 12:08 PM

Yeah there is:

http://pornotube.com/

King Jericho 09-20-2006 02:01 PM

LOL.

With people having grievances with the name, Wii and porn isn't probably the best combination.

I know that porn ins't really a thing Nintendo wanted Wii to be associated with and not many families would gather round and watch porn (unless you live in the deep south of America haha) but Boyfriend/Girlfriend/Wife/husbands could gather round maybe.

Destor 09-20-2006 02:07 PM

I live in the South. :-\

Destor 09-20-2006 02:09 PM

I can think of several times the family has been huddled around the Computer looking at pics or whatever. And on many occasions I have wished to have bigger screen for my PC so we wouldn't have to be jumbled next to one another. It will be nice to be able to show whatever it is we're looking at on the big screen. It's a neat feature with several applications. I'm interested in seeing how well it functions.

I find it much more convenient to press a button to start up a PC rather then use my Wii controller to type in an address, search, or anything with text. Even if you used a keyboard, I wouldn't want to have to go unplug my keyboard just to use it for Wii.

I can't imagine a single moment I would ever use thee Wii Internet. Ever.

Team Sheep 09-20-2006 03:56 PM

Perhaps they'll introduce a wireless keyboard.

DS 09-20-2006 06:15 PM

So I have to pay even more money? Yeah, $250 looks good for a console, but I'll have to spend almost another $120 on Wiimotes, another $170 for the nunchucks and classic controller, just to have a set of each controller for 4 people, another $30+ for a (cheap) wireless keyboard just to use the inconvenient internet add-on that I have to purchase so I don't have to constantly have to unplug my keyboard from my computer and then replug after I looked up YouTube videos for the family.

~$250+320=$570 Doesn't sound like a big deal to me anymore.

And before you ask, yes, I like to have enough controllers for when my friends come over that we can all take advantage of multiplayer games. So in order for me to get any use of the console when I have more than 2 friends with me, I'll have to have enough controllers for everyone to play. Kind of a big deal.

Luckily, all my friends seem to be getting one, so they can just cart theirs over :D

Kapoutman 09-20-2006 06:47 PM

The Wii has USB ports. Maybe it will be able to use standard keyboards.

Team Sheep 09-27-2006 02:49 PM

Pre-ordered it just now with LOZ: TP. :D

If anyone is interested here as some reaction videos from the Wii official site.

http://uk.wii.com/exp/

People of different ages and from different countries trying it out for the first time.

Savio 10-12-2006 10:39 PM

most of those games look shitty

Gerard 10-14-2006 11:11 AM

The sports game comes with the console, and as stated maybe 50,000 times before the console and its games are not about "zomg we got a 50,000 polygon tennis ball".

Savio 10-15-2006 04:25 PM

I like the sports game but cooking games? come on.

RoXer 10-15-2006 04:27 PM

That boxing idea could be pretty badass if they do it right.

Drakul 10-17-2006 06:02 AM

As far as I know it will be a case of punching with your left and right hands for real to punch with that hand on screen. And bringing your hands up or togethor to block. Both the wiimote and nunchuck have motion detectors and stuff inside them.

got mine pre-ordered yesterday after calling like 20 stores, i found one that had one place... so happy :)

King Jericho 10-22-2006 01:51 PM

Pre-ordered mine a little while ago, hoping that the store do a midnight release cos I am so there!

Pre-ordered Zelda, Red Steel, an extra Nunchuku and Wiimote, as well as Excite Truck for the hell of it, THOUGH, when I got home the guy had wrote 'Side track' instead of Excite Truck, I was like wtf.

Only 47 days for us European's. :love:

The Destroyer 10-22-2006 03:27 PM

Stop counting, it's making it seem further away. :(

I'm still waiting for Woolies to start taking pre-orders so I can take advantage of my mum's staff discount. But hey, at least they're being sensible and waiting until they can guarantee the amount of stock they'll receive.

Destor 10-22-2006 04:48 PM

I just Pre-ordered one here from Gamespot; I got the second to last one they had. Thing is, they're only getting 9. Crazy. They said they might get another shipment in before Christmas, but it would only be like 12 tops, and it wasn't because the store couldn't get anymore, but becusae Nintnedo produced so few. So apparently Nintendo is going for a small launch. Supply and Demand I guess.

Mike the Metal Ed 10-22-2006 04:55 PM

1 million in North America. Maybe the pre-orders were poor so the store ordered less.

Destor 10-22-2006 05:02 PM

Mkike why does it always feel like you're yelling?

Mike the Metal Ed 10-22-2006 07:17 PM

I HAVE NO IDEA

Funky Fly 10-22-2006 07:21 PM

Ow my frickin' ears. :(
