Pretty sure that's why they have been marketing it as more than a console. You know, the whole low cost Blu-ray, media center, central hub for entertainment. Not just a gaming console.

The only real selling point to the entire console is Blu-ray. If you don't have the want for Blu-ray right now, the PS3 shouldn't even be a consideration because, let's face it, if blu-ray gets big enough the player prices will plummet anyway in 2-3 years and will more than likely have upgraded features, like support for more layers and what not.

So really, even if you DO buy it for Blu-ray, within five years it will likely be the inferior player anyway.

It will only be inferior in 5 years if it loses the format war.

DVD and the new generation of format are so close together only because of the shift ot high definition, and it's unlikely we'll see another format overtake it any time soon.

On the other hand, early adoption of a Sony Video game system strikes me as stupid, with all the flaws in their previous systems. Not to mention backing a new Sony format, when they've been pretty consistantly on the losing side of every format war.

This is a really bad time to be lining up for a system.

When I said it would be inferior I was referring to the upgrades that will likely come to the format. DVD, for example, came out with dual format DVDs, which some older DVD players can't play. If they up the layer count on the Blu-ray, the PS3 would not likely be able to read the higher-density discs.

Of course, this is all assuming that they did do that.

That is the ONLY game that I will even consider buying a PS3 for near the end of it's life.

Blu-ray was made to be future-proof by simply adding more layers to the discs. If they come out with any new formats, which I don't see them doing, then it won't be until the end of the PS3 life. So really, there's no need to worry about the PS3 not being a suitable Blu-ray player for it's life span.

Except they did learn from that mistake, and this one is designed to read up to like 8 layers or possibly more. I'm hard pressed to think of what medium in the next 5 years will require more than 200 GB of space.

I doubt the players themselves will be outdated, thought doubtless more features will come along for other players.

Naw,m the PSP's fine, it's just the UMD is a horrible idea, is horribly inferior to existing technology, and is already being wiped out of the market. Almost no movies are coming to UMD, for example. This is mostly Sony's own hubris, but there's also this whole planning thing. You can get a DVD for 20 bucks, or a PSP movie for 20 bucks. Which is the better choice? Yeah.

It's an ineffective format with no real room for expansion.

The PSP's fine, tough there are less than five games I want for it.

Man can you imagine buying every episode of the Simpsons or NYPD Blue or something else long running on one disc and scratching it?

I say. But I say it based upon the knowledge that it'll be cheaper to manufacture such discs, and they'd therefore get less money. Now, they could still charge more, but then there's a pretty reliable train of thought that consumers won't stand for the markup.

In other words, the corporations who like money will doubtless opt for the more profitable step they can get away with.

Well, in theory, these discs are indestructable. But as my glasses are coated with the same polymer they use, and they do get scratched, I can't say that I trust that too much.

The biggest problem with scratches is the information is closer to the disc surface, something DVDs moved AWAY from, so if it DOES get scratched (And it still will, no matter what they claim), it'll be more detrimental (Or more likely to be detrimental).

So yeah, it'd really suck of whole episodes had data lost.

I'll get a PS3, MGS4, GT5 and GTA are too good to miss out on. So what if it means working extra hours to pluck the money for it, I guess it'll be a 'well deserved' PS3, Rather than a 'Cant be assed' Xbox 360

To be honest, what with blu ray, I dont think GTA will be sticking with 360 in a few games time. If it does, then It'll probably just be a 'diet' version of GTA. Sam houser already said about wanting to use Blu ray to the max.

Also, my PS2 is on its last breath, and there are gonna be some PS2 games I wanna come back and play.

If everything in the two games is the same, it's a moot point because he can play it on either system, so that game itself wouldn't influence his decision.... Unless he wants vibration... Then he'd want a 360... Or maybe if he wants to steer with the controller... But I'm speculating.

While nothing has been officially announced, most likely because the PS3 isn't released and we are just now getting some in depth details on The Network, the rumor is that the PS3 version will also have two packs itself, matching the two of the 360, but will also include extra unlockables when used with Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories.

Also, that was for Assassin's Creed. Just because the developers say they find it easier, doesn't mean all developers will. And once they work with the Cell, I'm sure they will be matching and exceeding the 360 AI. Just my thoughts on that though.

I severely doubt Blu Ray will be usable "to the max" in the PS3's lifetime. I won't even go into the foolishness of taking that sort of promise to the bank, I'd just want to point out that pushing the limits, even with a PS3 game, seems roughly as likely as a DS game "pushing the limits" of flash technology.

The PS3 is a pretty impressive piece of hardware, though that doesn't automatically qualify it for limit breaks.

I'm betting by the time this is an issue, the format wars will be long over, and we'll be on the XBox2600 and the PS64.

I mean, GTA released on Xbox a few months after PS2 was fine, but as soon as it becomes an immediate multi platform, and the 360 gets exclusive material, its like Rockstar can't cope and there are problems everywhere.

Yeah, The price of the PS3 really isn't appealing to me at the moment, I mean 6 Hundred bucks for an system, that seems a little whack, when we were just used to having systems selling for 3 hundred on the last generation at launch, and now doubling that? Seems insane.

Third party games will cost $59.99 (or cheaper depending on what they want to price at) and first party games will be $49.99. Plus the first party games are going to be the most feature heavy so it's still a good deal.

Wow come to think of it, I am really unprepared when it comes to buying a next-gen system. I haven't done any homework at all.

Well, all it comes down to for me is waiting a year or so. By then, I'll be a graduate and probably working some crappy temporary job for like $15/hour till I get a proper job. Since I can live on practically nothing, I'll probably have one whn the price drops... or if 657567965 games I want come out around then.

Just saw a video for Madden 07 on PS3 and it looks exactly like the 360 version.

Which doesn't make much of a difference, because sports games are terrible anyway.
